I just picked up a brand new O.G. At a garage sale for $10! I knew it was special, but I had no idea how special. I’m very excited to learn more about grinding. I slid right in at the highest end equipment. Just my luck! 😊

Just received the OG and working through the manual and your videos to understand the grinder better. I've had the Lido 2 for several years and it's been my grinder of choice for all filter, drip and syphon coffee extractions. The OG is a major advance in that it allows a very easy transition from coarse to fine grind, thus making it ideal for all grind settings required for the full range of extraction techniques from cafetiere to spro. But beyond it's function, the engineering and design of the OG is simply superb. Form and function have been perfectly aligned to create an object of beauty. Kudos to Doug and Barb! Your videos are also really appreciated.

I recently got my very own OG here in the mail in Belgium and I cannot be happier with it.
Feels like it's the first and last handgrinder I will ever need and use.
The grind adjustement system is magneficent and i'm happy to be able to future proof myself for my future espresso journey (recently started with a Moccamaster select and an Aeropress).
Thank you for the very informative videos, they have been a great help and study material whilst i was waiting for my unit to arrive.
Salutations and kind regards from Belgium!

Wow. I need a new Lido. Bought my lido 3 at launch in Seattle.

Hey, I just came here after watching a hand grinder comparison video when I noticed that there is a new Lido grinder. I've been happily using my Lido 3 for almost seven years now, and you just had to go and make me want a new grinder ;)
I know the Lido 3 stands out compared to most of the other hand grinders out there, but I am really fond of the look. Mine has held up great to almost daily usage, and I'm lucky enough that even my grind cup still works just fine. I think people must impatiently force the threads when they are not aligned or something to wear it out faster. It looks like the OG is even more of a tank than the 3, and I love the design style.
I originally only went this route to have a quieter grind (roomates) and to get a good conical burr for less than what you could get an electric grinder for at the time. But now I must say I am hooked on manual grinders. There is just something about hand grinding that makes the coffee ritual more enjoyable. You can really feel the difference between beans. It puts you more in the process, almost like driving a stick vs an automatic transmission.
You seem to have solved the very few pain points in a very creative way. The side-loading is a great idea to give you room at the top for the size adjustments. My biggest pain with the 3 is being afraid to make size adjustments for fear of not easily finding them again (it took me a few years to feel comfortable with it). It would be very nice to have objective stepped adjustments, and with the fine adjustments on top it seems like I wouldn't be losing anything vs the stepless adjustment of the 3.
I have been thinking of getting my first lever espresso machine, and being able to easily switch back and forth between espresso and brew grind sizes would be a killer feature. It would also help me get more use out of my varied brew methods, as right now I keep it dialed in for my aeropress and only change it every once in a blue moon.
I was watching the other video to see what espresso-specific grinder I could get to complement the Lido 3, but now I see there's one Lido to do both jobs just as easy.
Do you guys use more than one grinder at a time? I might be a bit attached to my 3, but it would be selfish to keep her on the sidelines if I won't have a use if I get an OG, especially when someone else might be in need of a previously-loved grinder.

Thank you! We mostly use the OG - several times a day, for both espresso and pour over. We also use our Apex for some pour overs... Being able to easily switch from the coarser pour over to the espresso setting, and back, without losing either has been a game changer - and remember, the fine adjustment is stepless, so you have the best of both worlds!

Had E-T for 5 years and hopefully will enjoy it for another 5. Burrs are sharp as new, bearings - stable, grind consistency is remarkable even compared to big-burr electric machines. Thank you guys!

Thanks for your continued work to improve this grinder. My ET was the best thing in the house yesterday. Today it’s relegated to second tier.

I am very happy with my Lido 3 and I use it every day (sometimes twice!). I also prefer the top-fill hopper. Absolutely love both the grind experience and the filter coffee the Lido 3 makes. But otherwise, your new Lido OG looks like a big improvement and a wonderful set of innovations, especially the grind settings and the grip, plus the new disassembly process. Very nice! Keep innovating guys! Don't be shocked if we end up buying one of these one day.

Construction looks really great on this. One gripe about my lido 3 is it’s tough to hold while grinding, especially with certain beans that are a bit denser.

I have a trusty ol' lido ET and eureka Atom 60mm, considering selling both of them and buying this. It'd be so cool to 'save' your settings between brew methods!

It really is handy! Need only one grinder now because the espresso setting doesn't change when we make our Kono pour overs, and then change back to espresso

I've got a fixie and Lido 2 and enjoy grinding coffee with them both. I find that I can do espresso with the Lido 2 and make grind adjustments carefully with a very small turn of the dial, a hash mark movement can overshoot a bit. This, looks absolutely designed to minimize tradeoffs to be able to go and do multiple adjustments across a great range. Well-done.
I must save up and get one.

Doug, I’ve got the original Lido (unit #285), that I got in November of 2012. Been seriously considering the OG, I’d read that the new burr set makes grinding easier and a bit quicker than the original. I do like the new adjustment system, over the years realigning the burrs and the wing nut coming lose during grinding was a little bit of a hassle. Does the OG require occasional burr realigning?

I have the E-T and very pleased with it however adjusting it is not nearly as convenient as the OG as you’ve demonstrated. I don’t do coarse grinds with E-T so I won’t lose my espresso setting. When will the OG be available and price.

    • @orphanespresso
      @orphanespresso  3 роки тому +4

Yes, it's VERY convenient to go from espresso to pourover and back again! Price - $285.00, hoping to have it available about 6/2 or so - they're arriving in Seattle on 5/27, then sent to the warehouse in Montana...

Wow, I can wake up 30 mins earlier so I can grind the coffee by hand. What is next? A hand crank washing machine? What do you want me to do, to change sleep for physical labor?

    • @orphanespresso

Worry not! Electrics are still out in the world - we have not taken over yet! And, by the way, it takes only a minute longer to do the work yourself, instead of relying on the grid to grind! :)

It's the burr quality, adjustability, precision, consistency you're getting here vs similar priced electric grinders.
It seems you are out of touch of the market this grinder is aiming at.

Did you know that rpm also affects your coffee? similarly priced grinders aren't offering variable rpm options

Nothing's stopping you from attaching a motor in place of the handle. In fact, given the travel bag, it'd be an interesting project to make a motorized accessory that'd fit inside the case with the grinder and some nickel metal hydride cells.

    • @neniugrava

Bro, it takes me maybe 20-30 seconds to grind a 15-20g dose. It's also portable, made with high-quality components, and doesn't wake up the whole house with a loud motor.
But maybe we should all just waste our money buying coffee at Starbucks because brewing coffee ourselves is too much work.
