Hi Josh. I'm from South Africa and i have 2009 Touareg of my own. Awesome vehicles and worth buying. Show me any vehicle that hasn't got issues. The exception here is that this VW is worth it. Awesome vehicles.

Hey Josh, I really enjoy your content. I am also very much a Volkswagen TDI guy myself. I'm excited since I am in the market for a Touareg TDI. I currently have a 2002 Jetta TDI and I love it. Honestly I never tire of driving it. The torque, the mileage, and longevity, I definitely "get" these cars. Your videos have helped in my decision to get a Touareg, it is gonna be great where I live in the Southern California mountains. Anyway, keep up the great work, and I look forward to your future videos!

Great to see you back, Josh. I tell you, I enjoy some of the more popular car channels on UA-cam, but yours is my favorite especially because of the Touareg content. I've got a 2009 Touareg with the 3.6L V6 and it recently turned 200k (km). Wonderful cars these are. True they do have some quirks, and some things are un-necessarily over-engineered (fuel tank) or over complicated (rear hatch struts), but they are solid SUV's nonetheless.
Broken door handle is quite a known issue with T1s and T2s. It's as if VW designed them to break. I had one break on a 2005 Touareg I used to have and ended up replacing the whole inner door card as it was easier and cheaper than trying to fix it.
Headliner, there's no escape, has to be replaced. Especially after so many years. I'm surprised about the dash crack though, I've never seen that happen on a Touareg before, and we have extreme summer temperatures here.
I'd definitely like to see more Touareg content, such as a transmission fluid change, or any other DIY jobs you can do on it.
Thanks and keep up the great content.

Where did you get a new headliner for your T? Was it a new one from the dealership, or was it a used one from a junk yard or a used parts reseller?
Since I'm an avid DIYer, I have to ask, could the headliner be pulled down and then glued back on? Same thing with the leather on door panels? Seems to me like an easy job given the proper tools.
NB: I don't own a Touareg but rather am in the market for one (2008-2010) since I totaled my car a month ago. It's either that or an X3. They both seem to be in the same price range, but not sure which one tend to be more reliable. So far, the Touareg is coming out on top.

The 2010’s are a whole different deal. Only touareg ever made that got an above average reliability score, I think only 2-3 others even got an average score. Doesn’t mean it’s going to be a cheap vehicle to maintain/fix, but for the value, and considering they should hold their value well, it’s a great purchase. The 2010’s were already underpriced and have been going UP the last 2 years since TFL started making videos, and then the pandemic blew up the used car market even more.
May mean they’re at a high right now, but considering how underpriced they were, seeming to have depreciated at the same rate as other YM’s until recently, and it’s the last year of the coveted first gen, I think they’re going to hold their value tremendously. Especially these diesels which last forever. Along with the dieselgate warranty, I think you’re looking at a pretty damn competitive cost of ownership, especially compared to any other vehicle with the capability, comfort, mpg (tdi), etc. the touareg has. Not sure anything compares really.

did you get the vw emissions fix and warranty extension with this tdi? have you done a transmission fluid change? the rear hatch issue is usually a broken spring not the hydraulic or gas cylinders. VW's sagging headliners are definitely frustrating. my jetta, golf and touareg 270(km) all sagging-big quality issue that Audi doesn’t seem to have. i have not heard of timing chain problems on the TDI seems to be more of a V6 and V8 gas engine Touareg problem. Exhaust issues are common and expensive TDI issues- flex pipes, EGR pipe, and i have had a turbo housing exhaust leak. my 2 cents.

That TDI’s just getting nicely broken in. The body/interior seems to stay together nicer then the golfs/jettas.
I did a trans oil change video back in the winter on my V10 (same kit from idparts for the early V6 TDI’s) pretty simple just kinda messy without a hoist. Mine still seems to like to stay in 5th and will lug down pretty good. Shifts fine through all gears just doesn’t like to stay in or shift down to 4th very much.

the VW Touareg is one of the best cars designed by the German house, the only care needed to make it travel 1 million km is to check and replace the fluids and coupons before reaching more expensive problems ... there are many kits to modernize both mechanics and bodywork and some considerably improve the longevity of the vehicle

Timing Chain needs replacing every 200k km along with a few other engine parts on the TDI.
The DPF has issues after 200k as well.
The intake manifold is another issue that can come up... This isn't a Mercedes 500 model... It has many issues... There aren't any 1m km examples that haven't had multiple major engine repairs...
Anyway sorry for replying to such an old comment, just wanted to add this if someone takes your comment seriously.

@@DemoNXCros Well, the 1m Mercedes was the oem606 diesel or the oem642 diesel too, 500 series like m176, m113 or m157, got many reliability issues compared to the diesels models. Dont get me wrong, diesels arent trouble free, used to have an oem642 on a w211 e class, this was the one with the 1 million km record, and It was a pain in the ass for the expensive mechanics parts. They can get 1m? Sure, but as every other German luxury brand, they Will drain ur Wallet, and if you dont make the maintenance, at 200.000km you can Scrap them.
Pd: We got here in Europe, many V6 TDI vw with 600.000, 800.000 km too, but as i said, running "on your Wallet". Any car can run forever while you keep repairing It.

@@MrEos43 I was a first owner of a 2008 CL 500 that ran with no issues whatsoever for exactly 356 659km then I had to replace the engine computer because it's placed on top of the engine (bad design) then it ran for another 100k before I sold it and got a Treg v6 tdi that had had more issues in its first 200k than the merc for its 450+.
I had 1 recall and had to deal with carbon buildup because of the bullshit eco system, multiple sensor failures, manifold problems that at 290km were unfixable and had to be removed via software modification, door locks, 3 mirror buttons, headlight turning motor, major injector issues that could've lead to critical engine failure, timing chain failure that if not detected will lead to critical engine damage.
I love the car but it has costed me more than a luxury Mercedes with a V8.
I currently own a 2012 63 c class coup and it costs less to maintain than my treg... But the treg is a great car if you can actually afford it, I still use it as my daily driver (345k km).
The original comment is misleading to people who might be interested in the car.
It is not a reliable car at all, the V6 TDI is the most reliable of the bunch and it's still bad compared to BMW and Mercedes cars, the v6 tdi is basically an audi engine... And we all know how reliable those are.
I'd rate the reliability a 5/10. With reasonable repair costs NOW(everything was insanely expensive when it was new.)... Sadly I got my one from a dealership brand new and it currently costs 5% of what I've paid for it.

@@DemoNXCros Seems we got just the opposite experiences. A good friend of mine, used to have a s500 from 2006, and a 190k had to sell It due to all the problems; neumatic suspension (Sry, i dont know how to said It on english) failures, manifold, transmision, gear box replace... And his touareg (a 2009 restyling V6 TDI) has 410k with no major issues.
We used to have a BMW X5 4.4 V8 too, and i was a money pit...
As i said, if you get a "bad" car, any car of any brand will cost you a lot o money.
From my experience, as a 3.0 6 cil. Engine, the best is the BMW one, they are pretty good, but again, no modern diesel car is trouble free from Dpf, EGR, etc.
And for the c63 they re just "supreme" 🤣.
And I agree with you that the main comment is too exaggerated, but as I said, all German diesels go quite well and except for some cases in which you get a "poorly made car" (Here we said a car made on monday), they can travel a lot of km fixing the 4 things that come out.

@@MrEos43 I guess it depends on too many factors.
I personally maintain my cars perfectly, and the treg still managed to have issues but maybe I just got really unlucky.
My merc was perfect, the issue I had costed 2400ish Euro to repair but it was the only repair I had to make.
These days people can't even buy a brand new treg (that's a good thing) most issues came out in the first 100k km, after that the chain at 210 and the injector at 300k km... It was a terribly unreliable car for the first owners but if treated well it lasts a long time.
The original comment is way off, the timing chain isn't a fluid and is expected to fail around 150k km... Thats information I got from VW
I'd honestly still recommend the treg though...
Everyone has a different experience with their vehicle so I guess people will just have to roll the dice when they buy one.
