Hayward Phoenix Tips and Troubleshooting

  • The Hayward Phoenix is a Leslie’s Retail only cleaner and is available at your local Leslie’s store. It is in the same Hayward family of cleaners as the Poolcleaner and Aquanaut and note that these parts are the same ones for all three cleaners. The Hayward Phoenix is a solid cleaner but it will wear out over time just like any other product.💕
The one part you will need to change more often than any other is the rubber tires. Depending on how long you run your pool and the pool surface type will determine the tire lifespan. Generally speaking, you should get at least 15 months to 18 months out of each set of tires. For best performance, once the wear mark is reached I suggest changing the tires. For the four-wheel version, I like taking the front tires when worn and just cutting the hump off. Then I put them on the back tires, thus saving $50.00. I then put a new set of tires on the front.
The best thing about this cleaner is that Hayward sells what they call the Lower Body Conversion Kit - which is basically the entire bottom with the gears and driveshaft, plus 2 new wheels. For $120 or so you can have technically a brand new cleaner in 10 minutes.
To learn more about the lower body conversion kit you can watch this video:

Another issue that you may run into is that large debris will jam the cleaner. A good way to solve this problem is to remove one or two vanes from the V-Flex turbine. It will still function fine and with the vanes removed larger debris will pass thru. Also in some cases, a small pebble will get under a vane and lift it up causing it to get jammed. Simply remove the vanes and clear out any pebbles.
The wall-climbing ability is dependent on the pool pump size and flow. Basically, if you have poor flow the cleaner will only climb the walls to the coves or partial walls. If you have a powerful pump (1.5 to 2.0 hp) and good flow, by inserting the large suction inlet the cleaner will generally climb to the water line in a plaster and PebbleTec pool. Note that for a Tile or Vinyl pool the wall-climbing ability will be less.
There is always the question of getting the 2-wheel or 4-wheel model. If your pool is more than 8 feet deep get the 4-wheel model. Also, if your pool is large and the skimmer is on the far end, go with the 4-wheel model as it comes with two extra one-meter hose lengths. For a small or medium pool, I suggest the 2-wheel model. I also suggest a 2-wheel model for a large pool with a side port, vacuum port in the middle. But when in doubt, go with the 4-wheel model.

This video is INCREDIBLY well done! Clear, concise instruction. Simple explanations with nice visual demonstrations. Part #'s to the replacement piece(s) shown on screen, for pausing/screenshot convenience. A price quote & link to purchase said replacement piece & a TON of useful information in the description. I applaud you, Sir. You have won the internet, and restored my faith in humanity.

Excellent video - I needed to see how to remove the wheel bearings which were very tight on mine and this gave me what I needed. If I had seen this video before buying those bearings, I would have just bought the lower body conversion kit. My local pool store had sold me a set of gears (they weren't able to install them) and then I bought the bearings. Cost-wise, I could have gotten the conversion kit for just a little bit more and had an easier time making the updates.

Thank you for the straight forward video. My cleaner's wheels stopped working, I will work on it tonight.
Update, opened her up and easily found she was bound up with some type of string.
Maybe this thing will do a better job from here on out.
    Thanks again for the video.

Very helpful video. Question though, my Phoenix stays in one spot in the pool. It used to move around randomly, not it just sits in one spot with the wheels moving. What's causing that? Thanks!

I would take it out and manually spin the wheels. See if their is nay slippage. It should operate just like in the pool when you manually spin the wheels.

My cleaner won't move. There's suction in the cleaner and also in the wall. I took the cover off and the veins would get stuck, and the wheels wouldn't move. I'm told it needs suction to move, but it doesn't move. The filter is fine. Could it be the black rod that connects to both wheels or an alignment issue?

Love your videos, I had a question my sweeper is just like this one in the video but grey. When I come out to the pool it’s not moving until I grab the hose then it’s starts working like something inside is not lined up and I think it’s the turbines getting caught from sliding out of the Channel. Do you suggest anything to fix an issue like this have you expirecnced this with cleaners you’ve encountered? Thank you

The position of the floats on the 1st hose is key. Try moving them down so it is 10 inches from the cleaner head. See if that helps.

My hose will not connect to the cover, there are two washer like parts and when I connect the hose the vacuum vibrates and if I hold the hose in the connection on the vacuum side falls into the machine.

It depends on where it is connect in the pool. Typically 2600 RPM will get it moving fine. You just need to make adjustments at the skimmer or sideport.

In the video description, the narrator mentions that when it is time to replace the tires on the four wheel version, to save a little money, he purchases a new pair of tires which he will use on the front of the cleaner, and he will continue to use the front tires by cutting off the single nub on each one, and then rotating them to the back wheels. I have a question that stems from his choice of words and phrasing. He states, " For the four-wheel version, I like taking the front tires when worn and just cutting the hump off. Then I put them on the back tires, thus saving $50.00. I then put a new set of tires on the front." However, it is worded such that he is taking the front tires, cutting off their nubs, and the placing them over the rear tires, which could actually be the case. However, I'm guessing he actually removes the old rear tires, and then replaces with the old front ones after the nubs have been cut off. So, which is it? Literally as you stated, ending up with the old front tires as the outer layer of the old rear tires . . . or did he misspeak somewhat by choosing some lingual phrasing that without making any assumptions can lead to confusion, and misunderstanding . . . or coupled with some assumption(s), it could still lead to either confusion or misunderstanding. It could go either way, so Mr. Narrator, pool-guy, dude, could you please elaborate by definitively stating which case it is? Much gratitude in advance!

    • @SPL
      @SPL  Рік тому

Remove rear tires. Remove old front tires. Cut the humps off of the old front tires. Put those on the rear. Put new tires on the front. Since the video was published there have been a lot of generic tire manufacturers so the replacement cost is relatively cheap now.
