I've noticed Kotobukiya's shinier kits are all prone to what almost feels like a less pronounced version of 'gold plastic syndrome' (look up toys made by hasbro that used metalic plastic in the mid 90s if you're not familiar with the term). i suspect that's what's happening here; a bad pigment, or collection of bad pigments degrading the material quality.

YES! I LOVE ARMORED CORE! Kotobukiya is extremely detailed in surfacing despite the amount of pieces. The Armored Core kits may be bland in color but that is also part of its gimmick since in the games you can color and edit them.

Mecha is certainly exaggerating the flaws of Kotobukiya kits. As someone who has built three AC kits, the plastic definitely is more brittle than Bandai’s, but that’s not an issue if you don’t treat them as action figures. They are display pieces that aren’t meant to be handled much; as long as you don’t manhandle them, they’ll hold up. There are definitely issues with the fitting of parts, some being too tight and some being too loose, but that’s nothing you can’t fix with some sanding sticks, files, and glue. What you get in the end is an impressive model with great color separation if you don’t want to paint, and a ton of detail if you do want to paint. Also, White Glint probably isn’t the best representation for the line since its color scheme is so largely white, meaning it’s in real need of weathering. The models with more color variety certainly look more impressive out of the box.
@@Brawler_1337 Honestly White Glint I'd say is one of the worst for me. I feel like these guys are kind of like IBO kits you either really love them or they have so many issues stopping them from loving them. White Glint I actually had one from a friend and it was in good shape, but I take it apart to paint and I see little cracks in the plastic. He said the flash was horrible so he had to cut large chunks of it and sand it smooth. It turns out that some of the flashing was in the legs joints and I couldn't seperate it.
@@Brawler_1337 I haven´t build any model kit but I really love Armored core. I heard people have the same complains with some models kits of that line(armored core) but you made a good point, these kits are not made to be moving around a lot, just to build it and leave it. Mecha said the same thing but all depends of the people that buy them, some peple like to pose them a lot while other just mod them, paint them and had it in one pose. I also heard that the Kotobukiya kits are getting better too, specialy the frame arms and frame arms girls. Anyway, thanks for the information and glad you enjoy your AC kits
man the kotobukiya armored core kit or just kotobukiya kit, in general, makes you think of how much thoughts and care Bandai puts in into its model kit building experience cuz kotobukiya kits just won't snap together and i had a nightmare with unsung armored core kit it isn't a problem if u like custom building kits because they are minor issues and the overall aesthetic will come out very beautiful, but for those who don't do any custom builds will just be a hand grenade and a pointy bland plastic
The zoids kits are pretty solid, especially since they are tweaking them for the rereleases. will the detail parts fall off, yeah, but I like how they build
My thoughts right now Bandai>Mass Production, Good plastic quality, Some areas needed painting. Kotobukiya>Expensive, Good Details, Plastic quality is debatable
I AM ABSOLUTELY IN LOVE WITH AC. ever since i first played it like 5 years ago, i have loved mecha. Im so glad you are reviewing this. seeing as getting your hands on this is going to cost me like 250 minimum thanks to scalpers.
Just keep in mind that he is very much not being objective here. As someone who has built three AC kits, they’re fine so long as you’re willing to put up with the flaws of Kotobukiya kits. Some parts are hand-crampingly small, some are loose, some won’t fit. But if you’re willing to be patient and put in that extra effort, in the end you get an impressive display piece. It won’t be as posable or durable as an action figure, but they’ll hold their own next to Master Grades.
@@ry0usama511 I wouldn’t say that much. I built all three of my AC kits when I was still relatively new to Gunpla, so I’d say maybe about twice the effort. What you need is thrice the care handling them, though.
@@ry0usama511 That is true lol. Thankfully, two of the kits I wanted had been recently reprinted, so I managed to get them for around the price of a Master Grade. Considering the size of the end product and how much plastic you get, that seems about right.
The mindset of two different builders from what I gathered, Mecha is all for stuff effective out of the box, while someone like say Zakuaurelius is for seeing the potential of kits. Mostly from what I see with their opinion on Kotobukiya.

White Glint is my favorite of all the AC mech designs, and I've always wanted this kit but too bad it's sold out everywhere. It's unfortunate to hear the kit sucks, though. It's like a "don't meet your childhood hero" moment.
Another thing to note is that Kotobukiya didn't get access to the advanced modern formula for K-type Polystyrene, or KPS plastic, which they simply just call PS in their kit instructions (Bandai claims KPS plastic is very nearly as tough as ABS plastic, and it is also surprisingly low-friction if the surface is smoothed out properly, and even soft enough to deform somewhat). Koto still uses a lot of old-formula polystyrene, although some of the newer Megami Device kits (like Alice Gear Aegis Ayaka) seem to have a new blend of PS for her "A" Runner (which is for her hair and feels more springy and less fragile than normal). They compensate by using a lot more ABS and POM plastic for structural frames and joints (and using thicker PS parts to compensate for the fragility). Also modern kits have been becoming less reliant on polycap joints and the instructions are much less obtuse.
I've been watching your videos for a few years and I have to say this has been favorite review that I've ever seen you do! This video finally made me hit the subscribe button
Man. That was one expensive break. Last time I saw a White Glint for sale it was 150. They have not fixed the brittleness issue with the latest ones but they more or less fixed it for the new hexa gear stuff. I remember my first few Armored Core models just breaking into pieces like the quad legged AC I had one of the legs snapped off when I was moving it with very little pressure, probably something I did to stress the plastic during building but still. And my favorite ACs arm snapped off at the ball joint, the friction is too much to do a reliable repair , I would need to have a new shoulder.
Wow that sucks, what bad luck. I have 2 armored cores that ive build almost 2 years back and they still hold up perfectly. One is even from 2007. Nothing about it felt brittle either.
I totally get what you mean about the plastic. I built a non-gundam kit once (Nirvash) and it was so damn brittle and horribly un-colour accurate I decided to never get a non-bandai kit again. Just painted it, put it into a pose and just left it on a shelf to never touch again.
The Milky White is the reason I canceled my order for the VOB version. I'll wait for a Reprint of the Standard version. I have the Sunshine-L and that thing is one of my favorite kits in my collection.
Love the fact that you're posting every single day now! Also, I'm loving the way you express the articulation of model kits which you just started recently!
Well, as you already saw this kit is only meant for those who are hard core fan collectors rather then to play with it plus I have seen pros who do put on the extra effort in paint and detail and it does look beautiful when done right. I still have the original armored core Gaea and still love it but I do admit the time and age does get to it in looseness.
As others have said, AC kits are not bad. They’re just meant for a different audience. Bandai kits are aimed more at kids and teens who want to play with action figures, hence why they have such a heavy focus on articulation and build strength. Kotobukiya kits, and especially Armored Core kits are aimed at adult collectors and modelers who are franchise enthusiasts or want to have an impressive display piece and don’t mind putting in some extra work to get the results they want. They’re good kits, but they’re not for Mecha’s tastes.
@@Brawler_1337 I've been considering picking up an Aaliyah or AC4 White Glint at some point if I can find them for a reasonable price. I'm not slighting Kotubukya as a whole as there are several kits and options sets they've released that I've wanted to diversify into for a while. Primarily my surprise with this kit comes with the plastic quality. We've seen it before even in Gunpla where changing the plastic quality between releases of a kit has a hug impact on its overall quality. I feel like that is the case here to.
@@Brawler_1337 and that mindset isnt giving gunpla any credit. Sure out of box kotobukiya kits look better but its still disingenuous to say that people who take gunpla building to a higher level with things like metal detailing parts, good decal use, good airbrushing, a clean topcoat, custom effect parts, and the works cant make turn a gundam into far better shelf candy thanks to the articulation making them great for things like diarama making
I build scale models since 50 years. To prime, glue and paint the parts is one of the most important things in my hobby. And I love the Koto kits for this. Did you see what artists like mig Jimenez create with Kotobukiya kits? It is pure scale modelling art. I like the Gundams too, of course - just busy building the verka sazabi: with glue, primer, molotow, tamyia clear color etc.. the color of the kit sprue or moving parts is therefore not important for me. I think, koto or Gundam is not better or worse. They have just different philosophy of kit construction.
Titanfall 1 and 2 are really great mecha games if you haven't played those yet. Titanfall 2 has one of the greatest campaigns in the realm of mainstream triple A shooters.

Aw. This is one of my favorite kits, and no that's not a joke. I never had an issue with the plastic being brittle--ugly and alternatively too loose and too tight, sure, but that's par for the course with Kotobukiya. I actually have to wonder if maybe yours had some kind of problem with the plastic, because a few weeks ago my kitten knocked it off the shelf, sending it falling a good few feet down, and not a single thing snapped. (And I didn't glue it together like you did.) Maybe I'm just lucky, but the way everything keeps breaking in this video doesn't match my experience at all.
I mean, its mecha gaikotsu were talking about over here. Who calls the mastergrade rezel a messy handgrenade....its like the 3rd kit i ever build and its still one of the sturdiest, tightest kits I have...not sure wtf mecha did to his....and there a bunch more kits like that haha. The more ive noticed this the more ive started to see mechagaikotsus reviews as "worst case scenario" reviews. Just makes it clear that bandai kits are for the most part completely foolproof but kotobukiya kits arent :')
Bandai's had their chance. They made kits of Eureka Seven and Nobunaga the Fool (both shows with mecha designs by Kawamori and an aesthetic very similar to Armored Core) - and they're decent kits but nothing special. There's no "Bandai magic" that makes their kits awesome, they just aim for rugged and user-friendly and to hell with anything that gets in the way.
I’ve built an normal AC unit, not so brittle plastic, but a los of popping parts everywhere. The variable action means you can mix and match parts of the kits. Including limbs
These are kits designed for builders. Not kids or a gunpla experience. Putting it together is just the start of the process. So yes, it will have poor fit & finish. Things will need fixed. You're building a model, not snapping up gunpla.
Ooof. Sorry that went so south for you. That sucks. However, I do have the OG kit. Both White Glint and the VOB unit. It is not in pearlescent plastic and looks dope AF on my shelf. This kit also looks a lot more color accurate than what you have there. Also, I do not play with my model kits after I’ve posed them on the shelf but this kit has survived after a ton of moving and storage to its final resting place. Disclaimer: I do own almost all variable infinity kits as well as most ACV. It’s my favorite franchise Finally, Mechaguykotsu you are dope af and I love your videos. Yeah I could never bring myself to buy any of the AC4 kits. If it doesn't say "Crest" or "Mirage" I'm probably not interested. :) But I mean if they made an "Emeraude".... Oh holy crap would I buy that.
I've never played any Armored Core game but I bought and built the Sunshine L and really like it. I do feel him though, the two Frame Arms kits I've built I had to cement anything that doesn't move
You treat model kits like those action figures with screws on them, so I'm skeptical of this review, especially since Armored Core is not the first thing that comes to minds when you're looking for highly mobile and shounen-posing robots. edit: OH MY GOD YOU FUCKING BROKE IT
I have to agree, Koto kits typically are a counterpoint to Gunpla more often than not. Gunpla is largely designed to be full action out of the box BUT has some engineering cheats no matter what the grade or scale to make that happen, even with Real Grades. Koto kits across the board are for those who want to put more time and care into their kits, having higher detail but as a result being much more fragile. I noted he didn't name the Koto 1/100 Metal Gear REX among the kits he's built from them, which is good because that kit is only as amazing as its known to be so long as you actually treat it as a model and not a toy. If Mecha handled a fully built REX the same way he handled White Glint here, he absolutely would break something critical.
Were definitely too harsh on this kit. Bandai is best at making mass market kits for the general public and inexperienced while Kotobukiya's kits are mostly aimed toward experienced kit builders. It may require more work than your average bandai kit, but that doesn't make it bad. For a kit like this the detail is phenomenal and the posing options are crazy, but in the end this is a true model kit, a shelf piece and not a toy. So when you compare it to a toy, it's definitely going to look less durable.
I completely agree, but I also think people exagerate so much it almost hurts xD Kotobukiya kits really take minimal effort to look great and still arent as fragile as "real modelkits" from other brands of modelkits beside bandai xD I dont even think kotobukiya is aimed at "experienced kit builders" at all. That would be the ma.k kits or something. I dont think you have to be an "experienced kit builder" to be able to glue a couple parts, paint a couple paintapps and be somewhat careful when manipulating the kit. I used to avoid any non bandai or pre 2010 modelkit because of everyones blown up exagerated bullshit. But Ive come to straight up adore kotobukiya kits ever since getting over that nonsense. They are by far the closest to bandai when it comes to what id like to call "lazy modelkits" :p (and dont get me wrong, I like lazy modelkits, i just think its kinda silly to compare what im doing when building a gundam or kotobukiya kit to what some real-ass modeler is doing while building and painting a whole fucking titanic with ocean diorama or some wwII scene with tanks and vegetation or something, those are worlds apart)
Who said anything about toys? Fucking hate this lazy argument from experienced builders like do you imagine other builders to be swinging these things around like theyre 3 years old? But yeah go ahead and keep gatekeeping your hobby like you love being surrounded by the same aging community of sweaty fucking nerds
When it has shitty fittings. That is not something that is designed for advanced builders. Its a flaw. It does however take advanced techniques to fix flaws.
I actually broke a part once on an MS Girl(GP03 Stamen), it came pre-built and i'm gonna be honest, some of those parts are just so goddamned difficult to get one, so i got a little rough and broke this teeny little foot armor part. I do like the Armored Girl kit's though, and the Frame-Arm's kits but they are very fragile and the plastic doesn't feel great(Frame-Music Girl's feel good though). Bright side, all their parts are interchangeable with eachother, after you get them together they tend to be pretty solid but tiny parts will fall off sometimes if your not a little careful. I think the Frame-Arms Girl project of Kotobukiya's is probably their most developed Kit's since there's so many of them.

Anyway, thanks for the information and glad you enjoy your AC kits
man the kotobukiya armored core kit or just kotobukiya kit, in general, makes you think of how much thoughts and care Bandai puts in into its model kit building experience cuz kotobukiya kits just won't snap together and i had a nightmare with unsung armored core kit
it isn't a problem if u like custom building kits because they are minor issues and the overall aesthetic will come out very beautiful, but for those who don't do any custom builds will just be a hand grenade and a pointy bland plastic
Probably just the Armored Core Kits. I have 4 Frame Arms Kits, not Frame Arms Girls, and so far I don't have Plastic Issues.
The zoids kits are pretty solid, especially since they are tweaking them for the rereleases. will the detail parts fall off, yeah, but I like how they build
I would just stick to their MSG line kits
zoids, frame arms girl, megami device
i enjoy them
My thoughts right now
Bandai>Mass Production, Good plastic quality, Some areas needed painting.
Kotobukiya>Expensive, Good Details, Plastic quality is debatable
7:42 this moment right here gets a brown tier.
@@Brawler_1337 yeah on average I think you need thrice the effort on Koto kits compared to Bandai's
@@ry0usama511 I wouldn’t say that much. I built all three of my AC kits when I was still relatively new to Gunpla, so I’d say maybe about twice the effort. What you need is thrice the care handling them, though.
@@Brawler_1337 + thrice the money kekW
@@ry0usama511 That is true lol. Thankfully, two of the kits I wanted had been recently reprinted, so I managed to get them for around the price of a Master Grade. Considering the size of the end product and how much plastic you get, that seems about right.
It's just the pearl pigment that makes the plastic so brittle. The original is nowhere near this bad.
Yeah, it's "gold plastic syndrome"
the OG white matte finish is awesome
looks neat
This brings me joy. Love to see you build a mechanicore
The mindset of two different builders from what I gathered, Mecha is all for stuff effective out of the box, while someone like say Zakuaurelius is for seeing the potential of kits. Mostly from what I see with their opinion on Kotobukiya.
I cant wait to build a megami device (I think I spelt that correctly). there's a really good Chanel called DDD the puppeteer
I really like that actually, I like Mecha's reviews because I'm a beginner who doesn't have a lot of time. Zaku's are great for the skilled model builder who will put a lot of love into a kit.
Yup because Koto is more of a plamo while gundam today is more of a toy that need assembly required.
When Zakuaurelius said Bandai spoiled us too much, I can't disagree with that. But tbf Koto's recent kits are slightly better than their old ones.
@@bit0016 It did and he is right, if you are part of the FB gunpla community there some of the members always complain everything even the slightest problems that need simple solution, you can tell who are the modelers and who are the snap fitters.

“Glint Eastwood”
That was amazing
We need more Armored Core games on PS5. I would love to see an HD remaster of 4 Answer and AC5
EDIT: I can feel your pain. I built a Kotobukiya kit once and it's also brittle, it feels like a bootleg especially when comparing it to Gunpla models by Bandai
From Software in the distance: What was that?! Make another Dark Souls games.
The studio that made Armored Core games broke off from FromSoft. They made Daemon X Machina which is Armored Core in pretty much everything but name.
Armored Core franchise now lives on "Age of Dark"
They're too busy working on elden ring
dont you mean pc and all consoles?
Out here hoping bandai starts making armored core model kits

i saw the picture and was like, NOOOO WAAAAYYYYYYY. i have thew white glint as a wallpaper! LIT. though the review wasn't so great i'm still happy to see it
IMO, This is the coolest Armored Core design ever, and Armored Core For Answer is the best entry of the IP!
Man... I missed Armored Core
I just wanted to let you know that I had to put my hobby knife and gun pieces for my kit down before I cut my hand or finger off due to the laughter. I haven’t laughed that way in years I know it was at your expense. But just know that you made me happy and I really needed that bit of sunshine. You da funkin man merry Christmas and happy new year
White Glint is my favorite of all the AC mech designs, and I've always wanted this kit but too bad it's sold out everywhere. It's unfortunate to hear the kit sucks, though. It's like a "don't meet your childhood hero" moment.
Never seen mecha this angry/frustrated since the RG Sinanju, and even that review seems tame compared to this one. I love it
Another thing to note is that Kotobukiya didn't get access to the advanced modern formula for K-type Polystyrene, or KPS plastic, which they simply just call PS in their kit instructions (Bandai claims KPS plastic is very nearly as tough as ABS plastic, and it is also surprisingly low-friction if the surface is smoothed out properly, and even soft enough to deform somewhat).
This video finally made me hit the subscribe button
i hope they can remake this model, it looks rad
Mechagaikotsu can you do a review on the HG Strike Freedom Revive pls so I know what's bad and what's good.

Wow, I never thought this kit would be this bad.
Ac kits is not for casual builder it have a lot to work to do with like other kotobukiya kit

I'd rather not see him taint anymore Koto kits in the future, leave them to someone who can actual build like Aurelius and Krow.
Man, if this is your reaction to something like this, I would love to see you build a Mechanicore kit..
Right on
Koto kits felt like being built to be a figure with minor articulation, Bandai definitely surpass them though in term of production and price
Right on. I share your mindset and philosophy
Titanfall 1 and 2 are really great mecha games if you haven't played those yet. Titanfall 2 has one of the greatest campaigns in the realm of mainstream triple A shooters.

Currently working on a GT40 1/12 scale now, that will remain nameless, there's only one, that I am cursing at every part. It feels nice that we share the pain.
Now that Bandai Namco will be publishing the new AC game, are we also getting some RG/MG Armored Core?

12:07 I'm crying this is too funny
Pearl version or regular?
I have the exact same version Gaikotsu has.
@@0mni42 mine's only got problem with the feet, other sections seems to be average, not the worst
Thanks mecha, I've been looking at this model for a few years now, and I've always been on the fence. Happy to know I dodged a bullet
well, it's time for bandai doing de real deal.. to show others on how it actually done with that model
His accent slipped when he was throwing a tantrum and that's when you can tell he really hated the damn thing lol
Omg, he snapped........this is my favourite mechagaikotsu's video. You entertain me. Now give me more!!!
P/s- Great job as always bro
These are kits designed for builders. Not kids or a gunpla experience. Putting it together is just the start of the process. So yes, it will have poor fit & finish. Things will need fixed. You're building a model, not snapping up gunpla.
It's also a decade old, made when Koto barely had any experience compared to Bandai, I'm not sure why people expect it to be gunpla quality.
It’s my favorite franchise
Finally, Mechaguykotsu you are dope af and I love your videos. Keep up the great work and thank you for the entertaining content.

Yeah I could never bring myself to buy any of the AC4 kits. If it doesn't say "Crest" or "Mirage" I'm probably not interested. :)
But I mean if they made an "Emeraude"....
“So now jumping into the articulation on Glint Eastwood here” had my dying lmfao
I completely agree, but I also think people exagerate so much it almost hurts xD
Kotobukiya kits really take minimal effort to look great and still arent as fragile as "real modelkits" from other brands of modelkits beside bandai xD
I dont even think kotobukiya is aimed at "experienced kit builders" at all.
Lets hope the new models coming soon will take your review to heart
im just watching this cause it was on my recommendations...
