I took a split rim to my favorite truck tire shop today and they said they quit working on these a year ago. So here I am learning on youtube. Thank you for this informative video.
Some quick tips! Put the split in the ring directly across from the valve, this helps balance the tire. Also put 5lbs of air in it, then hit the ring with a hammer, this helps seat the ring.
That's actually a split ring and not nearly as dangerous as split rims. There are several versions of each. If done right you won't have a problem like you said
Dangerous if mounted wrong but this Style wasn’t considered ‘The Widowmaker’. The one you’re referring to had a very small overlap on the parts and would blow apart easily if there was one little imperfection. One of the rim halves was split and I think they were 3 piece.
This is not a split rim “widow maker” this is a split ring rim. There is a difference. The widow maker is the Firestone RH-5 and is a two piece rim that fixes together in the center of the barrel not via a split ring. Split rings although may hurt if you’re an ignoramous will not kill you the way a widow maker will by spontaneously exploding apart normally while inflating the tire but sometimes when adding load.
That is NOT a split rim or a widowmaker it is a split ring rim. A split rim/widowmaker are the Firestone RH5° that have the barrel of the rim split in the middle. Split ring rims are fully serviceable and are STILL manufactured today... Quit posting misleading and incorrect information...
I've heard of these rims I've never seen them taken apart before that's crazy I understand why they're called widowmakers. Personally I would find another rim and stop using those crazy things.
I watched only 30 seconds and had to stop! EVERYTHING that he said in the first 30 seconds is wrong! This is NOT a split rim, it's a split ring rim and is TOTALLY different than a split rim! Split ring rims are still VERY common in America and are used on almost ALL mining tires as well as trailers that haul shipping containers! Why even make videos if you can't be bothered to find out basic facts before you post them?

Split ring. Not split rim. Also not a widowmaker.
You are not showing how you actually start putting on the ring
I hate those videos where people skip the "hard part", and show things already done.
Thanks for walking us through it with a vid 👍🏼
Very informative video! Helped me a lot and I learned a lot!
Sorry not a split rim and not a widow maker. Locking ring rim...
I’ve seen guys wrap them in chains while inflating. Great video.
Oops. I spoke too soon.
