Update: I've now bought a new Uni-ball Signo Broad pen - my updated favorites are listed in the blog post! sarahrenaeclark.com/best-and-worst-white-pens/ I’d love to hear what you thought of this video. 1. What is your favorite white gel pen or white paint marker? 2. How do you like to use your white markers? (I.e. to add highlights to your coloring pages, for lettering, for drawing on black paper, etc) 3. Do you have any other good white pens that I missed? Please tell me below!
Sometimes I really like to sketch on colored paper instead of bright white, when I'm using a brown or black paper I really enjoy playing with my white pens instead of sticking with more traditional ink colors or pencil. And of course to add highlights to my colored pencil and marker drawings.
I had no Idea there were this many white pens! My fAvorite is Posca PC-1M.1. It has an extra fine bullet point. The one you are using is slightly different. I haven't tried that one yet. One trick with any Posca pen is to shake it really well before you use it, every time. My second favorite is the Pentel milky pop gel pen.
Debbie N. I did give the Posca a good shake, but maybe not enough. It’s as if the white hadn’t mixed properly. I’ll give it another go! I didn’t find a Pentecostal Milky Pop- I’m going to have to add it to my list if I ever redo this!
Agree 100%, I had the same issue when I got my first pen. Shake it shake like Polaroid picture also test it applying a bit of force. It very clear what to do in the black pen
The 0.7 mm posca needs a lot more pumping and shaking than its larger counterparts. Maybe that's what's wrong with yours. It also doesn't like the tip being on an angle. Hope that helps.
I’ve actually been using Posca a lot more since this video. I don’t have the smaller size, but I love the larger ones I have. I’m almost due for an updated video!
I just ordered a pentel hybrid pen just now on Amazon. I liked the looks of that one the best. Thanks for the great video. I have learned a lot about adding detail from you. Love this video!
The gelly roll pens are very scartchy and are just ok. I used them for inktober. They are decent when you first get them but quickly deteriorate. Not really a huge fan. You also have to wait a little for the ink to really dry after you’ve used them for a little bit (like a week) they start to smudge the ink rather than sit on top if you dont wait like 15 - 20 minutes to apply on fresh ink.
Thank you! A good white is hard to find. I’d also love to see results of coloring OVER the white with other colors, since sometimes I want the white to blend in. Thanks again, I’ll be trying some of these out!
@@SarahRenaeClark No, i haven’t. I also evidently didn’t pay attention to the time stamp - I thought this was a new video. 😅. I’m sorry! I’ll go look up the update. Thank you!
My favorite white pen is a Utilio white paint pen. After buying a Derwent Graphik pen that just leaked and oozed EVERYWHERE, I decided to try a different brand and hope for better luck. Japanese brands have rarely disappointed when it comes to art and stationary stuff, and these hold up that record. My only quibble is that if they get a bit dry, you have to give them a little dip in some water to get them started again but after that? Lovely, opaque white lines with little effort.
I can’t get the gelly roll to work well, but I can try layering. The paint pens probably need a solid surface that won’t absorb them, but I’ll find out this week in a class. Thank you for your video! You’re fun to listen to, and you went to the trouble to make the different media. You really care about your videos and viewers. 😀
I love the Uni-Ball Signo broad after using Sakura Gelly rolls for years. I would like to try the Pentel Hybrid gel and Sakura Decorese gel pen later because of your review. I did try something you did not, and it is called Art-In-Fly, and it was pretty bad. Very scratchy, and the white ink is unpredictable, though some like it. Maybe you can check it out and see what you think. Thanks again!
I really like the Ohuhu Gel pens. I got a 20 pack with 3 silver, 3 gold, 6 pastel, 1 black glitter and 7 white. It was $11.99 USD on Amazon and I find it to write really well on all mediums I have tried.
Jacqueline Stone the Sharpie really surprised me. I’m curious to see how it performs on different surfaces, because it’s not like Sharpie to release a bad product. I wonder if the oil-base shows up differently on plastic, wood or metal?
@@SarahRenaeClark Oil is easily absorbed by unsealed wood. On plastic or metal, it's more likely to rub off. I use Sharpie because it's affordable, but it's not perfect. Sometimes it's a struggle to find the right medium for your tools, and vice versa.
I am partial to Uni ball myself and am never without one. I like SHarpie but some of the colours are meh. This was a fun video to watch. Thanks for sharing!
House of Hila yes, the Uni-ball is great. I’ve now bought another one and it’s easily one of the best. I guess I’d just used this one too much before this video!
This was fun, I actually got more right than you, but the ones I got that you didn’t were flower colours, and sino is a prefix for Chinese so I went with red. Loved it❤
I have quite a few white pens and my go to was also the Uniball but it did often miss and I'd need to run it along paper to get it going. Then I found Arteza and nothing beats that for me inc Posca which was my preferred even above Sakura. I finally got it around Xmas after it sold out on Amazon Au. Thanks for another great video Sarah Renae👍🌹
1:31 the 1st video of too many that shows with a tombow 😁 I've recently been testing the gelly roll 10 with some of my tombows. I usually want white on black, on N15 rather washed out, not so bad on N25... My posca pen wad a complete fail too. Trial and error with what I have on hand and -> places that let you pen test, like your local newsagent or Officeworks. Next test is the teardrop stamp inks with white pens.
If you haven't already (I realize this is 3 years old), get a new Uniball signo. I have a new one, and it seems a little brighter on black than the DX which is also really good.
In my experience with paint pens, they often need a serious shaking at first. Especially if they’ve been stored vertically, it can require a lot more than just a few shakes. (They should be stored horizontally.) In those situations, you also may need to run them a bit longer to get the dense paint through the nib.
Darcy McVicar Art haha awesome! I didn’t think to try these on watercolors. Maybe a future video? I was a bit disappointed with the Gelly Rolls on the pencils- I know they are super popular so I was surprised!
I just started using the Arteza Acrylic white marker water based. It works pretty good, but have to really shake it or it will be too light in color. I got 12 in a box, really cheap compared to Posca!! Has a tip just like posca pen PC-1m, plastic tip. Give them a try. Hopefully their prices will stay cheap.
I found another product, that I bought for another purpose, but it ended up a very good white "pencil", GuangNa metallic color pen markers. Very easy to use, odorfree and it works on different surfaces
I thought I posted that my Gelly Rolls work fine on pencil but I can't find the post. Maybe it was what I use...card stock. Anyway, I we to Pental Hybrid Gel DX and it is a good price I can afford. Oddly, when I looked up Sakura Souffle, Gelly Rolls came up! Sakura Gelly Rolls. I didn't see Souffle.
I had my signo pen but after few months it won't write properly not sure if I got a bad batch or that's how it is after few months of use. the posca i got is good and opaque the one I have is a bit thicker than yours as the one you used looks pen like the posca I have has similar in size as the deleter but with fine tip
demon6937 In my next video, I’ll show you how to revive your Signo and store it to make it last longer. I tried it on mine and it worked fantastic, even though it’s 4 years old! The video will go up Thursday.
I’m always so desperate with the white pens that I buy, but now that I saw your video I know for sure what to use next without crying in the corner. God bless you for this video ❤️❤️
I don’t really use paint much at the moment- but this sounds like a great idea! I’ll consider it for the future. Have you tried different types of paint?
I bought Gelly Rolls when I was in middle school and used nothing else. Since it was my first ever white pen I didn’t realize the faded white that they did on my pencil drawings could’ve been better. Not until I tried a Pentel pen one of my friends had. Shattered the entire little White Pen Bubble I had been living in.
After having these pens for such a long time now, which ones do you find yourself using the most? I need to buy new white pens (ran all of mine out of ink) and you use them in the same way I use them so curious on your recommendation!
I plan on doing this video again this year. I use the Sakura decorese and Uniball signo the most. But I use a white paint pen (Posca or Artistro) even more frequently and find it the easiest.
@Sarah Renae Clark good to know! I just bought a bunch of the pens from this video based on your recommendation. Thank you for making this comparison!! I'd love to see you do it again for sure, but maybe with some cheapo random ones in the mix too for either some surprises or epic fails haha.
I think it would depend on a few things, like the quality of the paint, what surface it was on, how thick it was, and how dry it was. But I would think that most of these would work ok on paint, as long as it were dry. I’m just guessing though, it’s not something I’ve tested!
Which white gel pen or marker you will highly recommend for pencil colours as so many artist use like art coaster, Isabelle draws, Rae and many more Please I really want your suggestion Waiting for it Btw it was a nice comparision video Please do make a new one in this year because so many new brands and products came new in this area( art area ) so please Thankyou ✨✨
I don’t know- it just worked for me! But I do have another video linked in the description above with some tips to help get your pens working again- maybe some of those will help?
I was so excited to try this. I had just finished a big coloured pencil commission of two cats and thought that this would be great for the whiskers. I bought the Pentel Hybrid Gel DX... and it didn't work at all. It would draw beautifully on card or ordinary paper but over pencil? No way. Disappointing.
I’ve more recently done a new version of this video where I tested these and 60+ more pens, and working on pencils was a much bigger focus. The biggest conclusion was that acrylic paint pens are a better choice than gel pens for pencil work.
Thank you. Question please . . . I got into origami - would I want a paint pen or a jel pen to added some eyes, etc to origami animals? thanks! I'm a senior and new to arts and crafts.
The thing about gel and even paint pens is that you have to be careful to not bump it with any part of your hand and give it plenty of time to dry. You might notice this with water-based or permanent alcohol-based colored markers too, although not as much time might be required. India ink on some black pens has dried fairly quickly for me.
Awesome review! Thank you -- I have the Uni-ball signo as well, but I've struggled at times using it on top of my colored pencils. Its a but funny to me though, my Uni-ball is significantly older compared to my regular black fine-liners that I buy much more frequently, perhaps time to purchase a new one on my end as well -- glad you mentioned that haha. Definitely going to give the hybrid gel DX a go, it seemed to do really well over the colored pencils and I'd like to see if it will layer at all over them. Are you still using the Deleter Neopiko as well? I've generally stayed away from paint pens because they can be so liquidy on the paper and usually dry out too quickly for me (I don't draw as often as I used to). Just wondering how that's held up for you over the past year.
Over time, I’ve leaned more towards paint pens in general, but actually back to Posca and other brands that make multiple colors. For the gel pens, I use the Uni-Ball and Sakura Decorese the most now.
If it isn't already on your list you should definetly try the Molotow one4all acrylic marker in EF. :D Signal white. They're marker for graffiti artists but so good. You can dismantle them completly and refill em. (So less waste.) It's my favorite white pen of all time. *w*
I've got Gelly rolls and other white pens and paint markers and none of them worked! The marker didn't show any paint, until it leaked and destroed my work. The Gelly rolls didn't do any damage, however they didn't work at all! No matter how many tricks I tried, no white paint came out of them. Can anybody suggest a solution?? Please?!!!
I don't know if it's in the video cause I'm commenting a bit early but I use a ubrand gel pen for mine and it works great on marker and Prismacolor, not sure on washistape but I got it in like a 30 pack at target for like 15 or so dollars !
I've bought a Gelly Roll and a Uni Ball Signo and they both clog on colored pencil. (Prismacolor). My Posca pen is a dud too!! It either leaks out or won't write at all!!! Which makes me sad because I see all these artist use them with no issues.
+Renée Dixon I’ve found the gelly rolls clog a lot on pencils. I’ve been using the Sakura Decorese more since this video and it has almost never clogged. I think the uni-ball works great for a while, but when it starts to clog it gets hard to get it back to working smoothly again. It’s still one of my favorites, but maybe the Decorese is a better choice if you’re doing a lot on pencils.
I just wanna point out that all gel pens are horrible choice for colored pencils. The reason is that those pens are water based. Colored pencils are mostly oil based (even wax based are mix of oil and wax) which means that white gel pen WON’T stay on top of colored pencil for long. Water is heavier than oil and it will inevitably “disappear” below oily pencil layer. It’s probably ok for hobby drawing but not for anything that is supposed to last.
This is a great point! I’ve since moved more to using acrylic paint pens and find them far better. I’ll be doing an updated version of this video (with 50+ pens and paint pens) in a few weeks.
@@SarahRenaeClark I hope you'll give the Posca another chance, it's recently become my favorite - it just needs hella shaking before first use, then it's great. Otherwise, it will do exactly what yours did. Also, please test all on samples of acrylic paint, watercolor and magazine collage, if possible. Anyhow, got some great tips from this video and am looking forward to the new one. Thx!
@@SarahRenaeClark No I haven't. I'm just getting into colored pencils. But I want to use gel pens also so I want to get some white pens. Have a great day Sarah and stay safe.
Obviously, every time before using the uniposca pen, you have to shake it, to mix the paint inside the tank. Instead the first time after the purchase, after shaking it well, you also have to place the tip on a surface and press repeatedly to soak the tip with varnish, that's why it doesn't work well for you.
@@SarahRenaeClark Aaaah. Well, I watched just the same. I was just funnin with ya to be honest, darlin. Didn’t mean any disrespect. Sometimes I just get bored and silly. Lol. Take care now.
@@d.st.michael4195 it’s a fair question though, even as a joke. People throw around the words “ultimate” or “biggest” a lot without actually checking if they are true! I try not to use them TOO often unless I’ve gone in-depth enough to justify it, or I’ve looked around first. Although I wouldn’t be surprised if someone else has done a bigger review since. This was over a year ago now- I would like to do it again with MORE pens!
You haven't featured it but let me put this here: the worst white pen in the history of humanity is PILOT SUPER COLOR - permanent type ink - extra fine. It literally functions as an ink discharger rather than a pen. You press it onto the paper and are left with a big blob of white ink. It is advised that you do this 3 to 4 times on a scrap paper until the ink starts to flow. But it never flows. AND it was 4 euros!!! Maybe I should just press all the ink to a cup and use it with a fountain pen lol kill me
Oh no! That’s frustrating. Definitely not how a pen should work. I wonder if that’s normal or if you just got a dud? Have you found another pen you like?
@@SarahRenaeClark I've seen one youtuber trying it and she had the same problem. I also saw similar comments on amazon. Unfortunately I hadn't researched it before I bought. It was an impulsive purchase at an art store. I'm pretty new to drawing-painting so the only other white pen I tried was Sakura Gelly Roll, and it didn't work well on watercolor at all. I wish I saw your video earlier, great job! I need to get my hands on a Deleter Neopiko I guess^^
My uniball signo broad just came in, and i wasnt expecting it to be so fluid, just so much for me, its too good, my brokeself isnt used to its quality lmao
I was excited to see this video with all the variations in testing, but after just 1 minute I realize that you left one of the most basic and important details out of your video - the price! Next.
There’s not a huge variation in price, and it’s not like you’re buying a big set, so I personally didn’t see it to be a dealbreaker when buying a single pen. But I do have links to buy all the pens in my blog post, so you can easily check the prices as you go. If price is your main factor, I’d recommend just searching online instead of watching reviews. Prices change constantly and the slight difference between pens would change all the time. I didn’t see it as an important detail for this video. Sorry! 🤷♀️
@@SarahRenaeClark oh that's okay, I found the content that I needed from another reviewer. And he was all inclusive and it was exactly what people look for when they are watching reviews..

I think it would depend on a few things, like the quality of the paint, what surface it was on, how thick it was, and how dry it was. But I would think that most of these would work ok on paint, as long as it were dry. I’m just guessing though, it’s not something I’ve tested!
Sarah Renae Clark Thank you for the reply ☺️
How did you get a white gel pen survive for 4 years? 😳 Mine always get super dry after a few weeks 😢
I guess that particular pen is pretty good then! Bonus points for the uni-ball signo? I now have a new one and it’s my favorite again
I had the same pen by signo.. Twice.. Both get completely dry..
Did you see my other video with suggestions? I actually tried a few tricks to revive my pen and they worked really well!
@@SarahRenaeClark not yet 😮 will have a look, thanks!
Which white gel pen or marker you will highly recommend for pencil colours as so many artist use like art coaster, Isabelle draws, Rae and many more
Please I really want your suggestion
Waiting for it
Btw it was a nice comparision video
Please do make a new one in this year because so many new brands and products came new in this area( art area ) so please
Thankyou ✨✨
I have a new white pen video coming soon!
@@SarahRenaeClark OH TY FOR REPLYING AND I WILL BE WAITING FOR IT...😊💗✨
How did you get your Sakura classic white pen to be sooo opaque, the ink in mine wont come out
I don’t know- it just worked for me! But I do have another video linked in the description above with some tips to help get your pens working again- maybe some of those will help?
Try out the TOUCHNEW GG 08
this one is surprisingly nice in my opinion
I'll add it to my list!
You should have tried the Molotow one4all marker, they are amazing and the white is super good
I was so excited to try this.
+nmwillow both would work for origami, so it would come down to your personal preference. The gel pens are probably easier and less messy to use :)
The thing about gel and even paint pens is that you have to be careful to not bump it with any part of your hand and give it plenty of time to dry. You might notice this with water-based or permanent alcohol-based colored markers too, although not as much time might be required. India ink on some black pens has dried fairly quickly for me.
Can you give me a link to this pentel hybrid gel pen DX? I can't find him anywhere 😥
@@SarahRenaeClark thanks for the update! :D
Did you try the Arteza brand? I bought a box of them there were 3 different sizes and I found them really good.
No! I didn’t know they had them when I did this video but I plan on doing another white pen video in the future with some more brands I missed
If it isn't already on your list you should definetly try the Molotow one4all acrylic marker in EF. :D
Signal white.
They're marker for graffiti artists but so good. You can dismantle them completly and refill em. (So less waste.)
It's my favorite white pen of all time.
Please?!!!
please try Derwent paint pen in white
I’ve been making a list so I can do this test again in a few months, since I already have about 10 more to add to the list!
@@SarahRenaeClark also try delusions white paint pen which i believe is better than the Derwent ones
I don't know if it's in the video cause I'm commenting a bit early but I use a ubrand gel pen for mine and it works great on marker and Prismacolor, not sure on washistape but I got it in like a 30 pack at target for like 15 or so dollars !
I wish I'd watched this before getting the white gelly roll pens. They definitely are difficult to get to work on top of colored pencils.
@@SarahRenaeClark I'm definitely going to order it!!
What about Osmer pens ?
So which one is the best for water color ?
I haven’t tried them on watercolor sorry
hi. What is the finest point white pen you can suggest?
Do you have any feedback on how they performed on inktense pencils?
thank you for this video! helps so much
I love this video! But I'm really sad I can't find any of them 🥺
I just wanna point out that all gel pens are horrible choice for colored pencils.
Thx!
What SIZE of tip is the Sakura Decorese pen?
It’s like a regular ball-point pen tip
Which one is best for alcohol markers?
They all worked quite well on alcohol markers. You can see the close up swatches on the Copic markers in the blog post.
Oof, I use colored pencils mainly... my gelly roll pens do nothing! Super annoying 😂
Sameeee! No gel pen works!
@@fatmagreste1286 same with black pens.... ugh! 😫

Very awesome video.
Elaine Marie LaPointe thank you! Have you used a white pen before?
@@SarahRenaeClark No I haven't. I'm just getting into colored pencils. But I want to use gel pens also so I want to get some white pens. Have a great day Sarah and stay safe.
Thank you.
Uniball Signo all the way here with an occasional ultrafine Posca.
Nat Ford I think I’m going to buy some more Poscas! I’m convinced they are better than what I found in this video.
Obviously, every time before using the uniposca pen, you have to shake it, to mix the paint inside the tank.
Instead the first time after the purchase, after shaking it well, you also have to place the tip on a surface and press repeatedly to soak the tip with varnish, that's why it doesn't work well for you.
I’ve now used some other paint pens and think I definitely didn’t use the Posca properly here. I’ll give it another go in a future round up!
@@SarahRenaeClark I think would be useful if you also reviewed correction pens
The water-based sharpies are much better than the oil based, no reason to use oil on paper products.
What makes this different from all the other ‘ultimate white pen’ comparison video? Asking for a friend?! :)
At the time this was filmed, nobody had tested this many side by side.
@@SarahRenaeClark Aaaah. Well, I watched just the same. I was just funnin with ya to be honest, darlin. Didn’t mean any disrespect. Sometimes I just get bored and silly. Lol. Take care now.
@@SarahRenaeClark Plus, the responses are always good for the channel analytics, I think.
@@SarahRenaeClark Thank you Sarah. Enjoying your content.
The white gel pen
Devon Rodríguez brought me here tbh
Nice video =)
