  • From THE MUSIC OF WAYNE SHORTER
    By the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis
    "He’s at the highest level of our music-you can’t get any higher than him.” So says Wynton Marsalis of the legendary saxophonist, composer, and band leader Wayne Shorter. With a legendary career spanning over 60 years, the 11-time GRAMMY award winner (including a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy) has released countless classic records and amassed a canon of lyrical, introspective music that stands up to the greatest jazz composers. In 2015, the formidable 81-year-old joined the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis onstage for three unforgettable nights; the result is The Music of Wayne Shorter, out Jan. 31 on CD and digital formats.
    Listen now: jazz.org/wayne
    For the record, JLCO members arranged beautiful, intricate versions of some of his most classic songs, including “Armageddon” (from 1964’s Night Dreamer), “Endangered Species” (from 1985’s Atlantis), and a very tender, Marsalis-penned take on “Teru” (from 1966’s Adam’s Apple). From Art Blakey to Miles Davis, from Weather Report to his own fabled Quartet, Shorter has done perhaps more than anyone to expand the known universe of jazz. Now, The Music of Wayne Shorter takes Shorter to places he’s never been before, giving his beloved compositions and hauntingly lush saxophone sound the big band backdrop they’ve long deserved. As Marsalis says, “Everybody strives to have a personal sound: his sound is definitive.”

    This is truly a beautiful arrangement but on top of the music, I feel enormous gratitude and nostalgia as I see Wayne, Wynton, Victor Goines, and the cast of master musicians playing together in an HD video. Like seeing raw footage of your super heroes. Wayne Shorter is in my opinion one of the most valuable people on the planet and I hope everyone can sit back and take in how lucky we are to see this today.

  • @zenobardot
    @zenobardot 4 роки тому +29

    The arranging of the main theme starting around 0:50 totally caught me by surprise. The original 1964 recording sounds more stormy and anxious, with Elvin thundering behind Wayne, and McCoy's intense ringing chords sounding more staccato and martial, plus Wayne's tenor sax having something of the Coltrane "cry", a tone that's not trying to be big and round and soothing like a Ben Webster.
    Here, JaLC is all smooth edges, fat-sounding trombone choirs, and synchronized swing that moves like a Swiss watch during the opening...it almost sounds like the entrance music for a television host. I'm not saying that to put down the arrangement...it's very well played and arranged and offers a different perspective on the tune, which is fun to hear. And how can you translate McCoy and Elvin into a big band? I like how things evolve once the soloing starts.

      They also change ties and Shorter has a large pin on his lapel at the end, and the soundtrack doesn't quite match the video at the end. It could be that they preferred the brown-shoes performance, but wanted to capture Shorter's emotion at the end from the black-shoes performance, with the brown-shoes audio running underneath.

      It’s actually Yes AND No, like the figure of speech. The A section is the major tonality based “Yes” section and the bridge is the minor “No” section. That’s according to Wayne himself.
