- From THE MUSIC OF WAYNE SHORTER
By the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis
"He’s at the highest level of our music-you can’t get any higher than him.” So says Wynton Marsalis of the legendary saxophonist, composer, and band leader Wayne Shorter. With a legendary career spanning over 60 years, the 11-time GRAMMY award winner (including a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy) has released countless classic records and amassed a canon of lyrical, introspective music that stands up to the greatest jazz composers. In 2015, the formidable 81-year-old joined the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis onstage for three unforgettable nights; the result is The Music of Wayne Shorter, out Jan. 31 on CD and digital formats.

For the record, JLCO members arranged beautiful, intricate versions of some of his most classic songs, including “Armageddon” (from 1964’s Night Dreamer), “Endangered Species” (from 1985’s Atlantis), and a very tender, Marsalis-penned take on “Teru” (from 1966’s Adam’s Apple). From Art Blakey to Miles Davis, from Weather Report to his own fabled Quartet, Shorter has done perhaps more than anyone to expand the known universe of jazz. Now, The Music of Wayne Shorter takes Shorter to places he’s never been before, giving his beloved compositions and hauntingly lush saxophone sound the big band backdrop they’ve long deserved. As Marsalis says, “Everybody strives to have a personal sound: his sound is definitive.”

6:07 to 6:31 is the most bad ass thing I've heard so far this year, oh my god!!! He played that slick lick then his band mate said "Whoo" and Marcus said yeah, "Whoo" is right. Man...

Dang, one of the greatest bop, and modern jazz composers, and tenor players in history was 81 when he played this sounding like he's 20.

God Bless you Mr. Wayne Shorter. You have insprired me so much in my musical career. I play your music daily on my tenor sax. It brings me so much joy!!
Killer solo Mr. Printup
If there were more kids in our world learning musical instruments, and listening to the jazz greats, I'm convinced we would have a more peaceful planet earth. Word to the Kids-- challenge yourself to learn an instrument, you'll never be bored if you love challenges.
Oh the life saving hard swing of it all! This is how you tell a story! Let the end of the world come! Mighty Jazz will snatch life from the jaws of death. Play that!

Yeah! 🎺
Most older cats struggle to play through their old tunes. Their ombiture weaken and they're behind the beat. But Wayne seems to have survived this set.

Maybe the most accomplished musician in history should be elected by Downbeat's readers to their Hall of Fame! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DownBeat#cite_note-81
No
There are no words in any language on Earth to adequately describe the pure Genius of Wayne Shorter. Lastly, hey Mr. Drummer - - - put on your jacket. No excuses. All of the legendary Master Jazz Drummers played in suits and tuxes, and all of your band mates are wearing theirs. Get with it.
Good to hear him playing some more traditional strait forward melodies than the random honking and screeching sound fx with the drummer going "whoaaah" ever 30 seconds 😆
Glad to know your enlightened opinion on how of the greatest jazz composer of all time, acknowledged by everyone including more "classical" players.
It was very important for you to mention that. He wrote so many of the standards you play before you were born, you fool.
