My Personal Grail Quest Is Finally COMPLETE!

What am I talking about? What's my Holy Grail quest? I'm not going to spoil it. You'll have to watch to find out!
I finally got hold of a machine I've lusted after since before I knew what lust was (a.k.a. since I was 9 years old).
This particular machine and its baby brother don't get a whole lot of love from retro UA-camrs. Much more attention is paid to later models from this iconic manufacturer. Considering how capable these were and when they were released, that just ain't right. Maybe I can start to address that inequity.
Let's take a journey through the wonders and mysteries of this gorgeous machine together. We'll do a teardown and give it a re-cap while we're in there.

Congrats on the 800! Glad you got to check that tank off your list. I was always a Commodore guy, but I definitely wouldn't mind playing around with a 400 or 800 if I ever have the opportunity to snag one.
Thanks. I try to be brand agnostic. As a kid, I was more in to the Tandy Coco line, but now, I'm just fascinated by all the machines that started us on the path that led to where we are today.
That's so cool that you finally got not just one, but two and a good price! It must have felt a little like Xmas Morning. 😀Nice to see that all of the ICs are socketed too. That'll help with a hardware tinkerer for sure. Hopefully someone will sell a cheap "for parts only" machine with the keys needed. Also, PEBCAK is definitely universal. 🤪

I'd heard "short between the headsets' and one or two others. And yes, that's apparently a ubiquitous problem. Thanks for sticking with me, Marcus!

The 800 was my grail too, they are rare as hen's teeth here. Commodore had a huge lock on the market. manged to get a 400 and I have the 600XL and 800XL. Careful with them, I find the plastic on the 400 to be extremely brittle.

Nice pickup! The Atari 8bits are my favorite retro machines. I started with a 400/410 tape drive and eventually got an 800xl/1505 disc drive.
Very cool! I got a 410 in the lot, but it's in pretty bad cosmetic shape. No idea what mechanical/electronic shape it's in yet. Thanks for watching!

Yes. Doesn't mean that I ONLY care about Tandy Coco's. I had those as a kid. This one I never got and always wanted.
Did any of boardz, cpu, rom, memory cards have electrolytics to be replaced?
The only electrolytics are on the main board and the AV/power board. I did replace them all on both machines (you can see that in the follow-up videos). I don't think any of them were out of spec, but I did it for future-proofing purposes. Thanks for watching!
This was also my holy grail, well, along with an Amiga but this was my first. I've since picked up 5 of them but none is complete yet. I think I'll have a complete one once I find the missing 3 keys for my keyboard. You mentioned you had 3d printed some. I wonder if it's the same keyboard as mine. Mine has the square posts on the keys rather than the cross. I have at least one keyboard with the cross and haven't checked the other yet but do you have the link to the 3D file? Thanks.
