$27,330 in 1997 is the equivalent of $51,200 today. The Jeep Cherokee's top model in 1997 is basically the equivalent of buying a fully loaded Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara today which is nuts. Most people don't realize how expensive Jeeps were back then
You're comparing apples to handgrenades. The top of the line 1997 Cherokee 4Dr Country at $27,500 is $53,405 today, which doesn't even get you into the top of the line Cherokee in 2024, it would net you the mid-range Limited at $50k. The Summit (top of the line) starts at $64k and the Summit Reserve (all options) starts at $69k. Cars are much more expensive today than they've ever been, and they inflate at twice the rate as most other commodities. I'll grant you that Jeep has always been more expensive than a comparable vehicle from other manufacturers, and it's because of the well-known "Jeep tax" that the manufacturer attaches to sticker prices, simply trading on the name. AMC/Chrysler/Stellantis knew that people will pay 10-40% more for the privilege of saying "I have a Jeep" instead of "I have a Scout" or "I have a Bronco."
I know this is old but wanted to respond anyway. Its really too bad these just cant be built anymore. I doubt the old 4.0 could meet today's emissions, and a new XJ would weigh almost 5,000 ponds because of all the safety crap that the government has regulated all cars must have. Our government has been ruining vehicles since they got involved.
I got a '96 4x4 jeep cherokee in 2022 as well, and it has some quirks especially for being 27 years old now, but all things considered, it's great. It's still stock with mid-tier all terrain tires, and I' ve taken it on roadtrips, mountain roads, minor snow wheeling, and no major issues. Some people say that it's not the fastest on the highway, but mine still packs some power.
If FCA came out with this exact vehicle today, just with updated tech features, it would sell like gangbusters. Every time I see a nice XJ like this, it makes me want one. But 27K in 1997, I didn't realize they were that expensive.
My mom bought a manual trans sport in 1995 for just under $18k. It's still going strong at 240k. I just took it on a 5000 mile roadtrip with no worries.
They can leave the tech crap out, I don't want a vehicle full of electronic garbage to fail. Back when the XJ's and ZJ's were around they had plenty of features but were easy to work on and service unlike the garbage out on the car lots today.

No, rust kills them - eventually. Thin metal - not that well rustproofed from factory. If you're lucky enough to find a solid one - get some kind of quality underseal on the chassis & you should be golden.
+Smitz .T I thought that was a bit quick too....I had a '97 Cherokee 2 door 4X4 with a 5 speed manual and it didn't feel anywhere near that fast 0-60(maybe 10-11 seconds, but not 8 or 9 seconds to 60). I still regret selling it a few years back :-(
+Smitz .T You can thank the 4.0L torque output for that time. It produces lots of torque from a low RPM. Not a High revving motor. (5200 Redline) But you know the old saying " Torque moves cars, Horsepower sells them"
Ugh, makes me sad. I miss my 2001 XJ Cherokee soooo much. Should've never let it go. And now finding a nice, unmolested example is near impossible/super expensive/very high mileage. They should've kept building the XJ even longer!
I've seen quite a few 2001s for sale on eBay around the $9,000 mark and some with mileage in the 70/80,000 range. You would have a hard time finding another vehicle with that capability they you know will go another 100,000 miles for that low of a purchase price.
AhJotahTube I got my 99 with 115k for 2200 last summer. Straight body, no rust. Needed tires and about 400 in parts. She's very dependable now. I love it. I has jeeps but then had an audi, volvo, etc.. When I first sat in it I realized what makes jeeps so great. They're simple. It's such a nice feeling not having all the distractions of a modern car. Seriously... You want heat, turn the dial. My audi had the screens, dual climate control... Buttons. Menus. The volvo had a person and I had to choose which part of him I wanted to blow air on. Very annoying. I missed simple.
+AhJotahTube They did keep building them longer. Just not in the US. I think production lasted until 2009 or 2010. It has a grille redesign that looked similar to the Grand Cherokee. The XJ with the 4.0L was called the BJ4000... Many XJ and MJ owners in the US ordered the new front fenders, bumper, and grille to swap onto theirs. edit: Just looked it up and it appears they were still in production at least thru 2014 though the 4.0L wasn't available after the late 2000's as they switched to some older design Nissan engines... Look up the *BAW Qishi*
They were made in china though, so.. who knows what kind of quality they had. I know that when I install a chinese made cps its going to fail in 6 months instead of 16 years lol
The new ones aren't Jeeps, they're just Fiat garbage with Jeep stickers on them in order for Fiat to be able to sell their junk here in the US, they had to put the Jeep name on their vehicles.
Just bought a 92 4.0litre Limited in perfect condition and love the car. They are getting rare in Europe but everytime I drive, people turn heads. Great car design and great package.
Just keep up the oil changes and expect things to break. I have a 97 and the transmission started acting up. Luckly it was the transmission module found one in junk yard for $20.00 us. I still would not sell it even if I ever have to change the engine.
Got a 98 xj with 310k miles. 8.5 long arm lift 35s and gets beat on everyweekend. Oh it also drives 120 miles on the highway everyday to bring me to work. AC still blows cold and it never misses a beat. They truly are tanks. Wish they would make it again.
I wish major auto reviewers would have had a chance to drive one of these that had the ax15 in it. The manual cherokee is a total transformation from the autos. they are so peppy and torquey feeling. sub 8 second 0-60. unibody with near 50 50 weight balance and live axle front suspension made this the best compact suv of the time and still is today. So sad how many of these were crushed by Obama's cash for clunkers.
my 95 4.0 4speed auto takes me and family with gear loaded no problems... to ocean to mt's as we 4x4 and back never a problem..love these OLD tanks.. lived in mid-east and Europe UK right hand drive... and in desert never over heat or problems.... I had 1 in UK and 2 in Saudi Arabia...and now my 1995 with 245k and still going Strong!!! JEEP
@@WhynotMinot I love them.. everything about them is just perfect. maybe not gas mileage though haha.. very easy and fun to work on and modify as well. Very reliable indeed!
One of the best vehicles ever made. I'd say it's a pity they stopped making them but it truly had a good, long run. The new Cherokee suffers from being a product of FCA, which means low quality control standards in the name of profits. Unfortunately that won't be changing anytime soon.
I was just pricing new 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sports. You can get one well equipped for $27k today, larger, equally powerful as this Jeep, much safer and more modern. In the end I bought a 1990s Range Rover for $3000 :)
This one remind me and missing my 98’ red jeep Cherokee sport with blue decal sport and black grille is exactly same jeep my foster mom’s on this video but only two thing, mine was 5 speed manual transmission and no overhead console, just mini lamps for front seat, but everything is exactly same, my foster mom has same every options like this video have! Fog light, tow hooks, grey interior, power windows and lock and cruise control but our was an 5 speed manual transmission and no overhead console like this, it last 300k miles on it and still on the road!!
If ANYONE is considering buying one now in the UK...your main worry is the immobilizer as we had a piggy back oem alarm on top of the jeep one and it's a real ball ache....especially the 97 year....So make sure the fob is consistent
0-60 in 8.5 seconds, my 89 cherokee lifted on 33 inch tires with stock gears cranked out a 12.5 time to 60. getting regeared soon so excited to see how much closer i get to 8.5 lol
Long time to come. It's just so unfortunate that the Cherokee now a days is junk. Wish they still made the old school boxy Cherokee that we all freaking love
I mean, we bought one of these and we like it. It only has minor upgrades suck as a lift kit lifting it 3 1/2 inches. Followed by more powerful stereos and a more modern radio and locking difs.
In 1999 I was a 22 year old who had $6800 bucks to put down on a late model SUV. This was one of my choices but bought a '96 Explorer 2wd instead. That turned out to be a very good SUV for many years but I always fantasized about what if I got a 4x4 Cherokee instead. I could have rocked this XJ during its "prime" years. I've made up for it by owning a 2004 WJ 4x4 for many years now. Sometimes I pretend it's a Cherokee. :)
I'm on my third XJ bought each one at over a hundred and fifty thousand miles and drove each one a hundred thousand miles. 94 97 and currently driving a 96. Bought the 96 unmolested, it is no longer unmolested. 3" and 33's.
Those engines wouldn't fit LOL, even with the 2.8L V6 that was initially in the Jeep Cherokees when they first came out up till I believe 1987 when they introduced the I6 the engine bay was cramped, that V8 wouldn't work out so well in that engine bay, and you would forever have cooling problems :(. Now you probably could fit it into the Jeep Grand Cherokee which did offer the 5.2L (318) or the 1998 model year only 5.9L (360) so the 392 would probably be easier to shoehorn into the ZJ's from 93-98...possibly into the WJ's from 99-2004 as well.
My foster parent bought 1998" Red Jeep Cherokee Sport 4wd with 5-speed manual was best SUV ever we had. I missed the way of Cherokee and i wish the Chrysler should build like this! ' they had it since almost 10 years then we traded for new 2007 Liberty, then 2 years with jeep Liberty, dislike the liberty, then traded for brand new 2010 Deep blue, Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara, I wish I should buy this jeep! I want that jeep, it's very rarely to find like this!
I'm still considering purchasing a low mileage 2001 XJ Cherokee to replace my current 2001 XJ should she ever bite the dust. It is a very reliable vehicle and mine continues to run just fine and I'm about to turn over 170,000 miles! I average 19-20 MPGs on the highway and I'm running a 4WD model. Not good, but about on par with a full size truck and many modern, more expensive SUVs out there.
+travisp11 I have the 2000 Cherokee sport, and I've thought about doing the same only with a 97-99. The 00 and 01 engine heads tend to crack. I got lucky with mine, but i'm always paranoid about it. 155k still running strong though.
+Stephen Williams Dude, I agree! My 01' still has the original heads but if it would have some sort of catastrophic failure I'd probably still get it fixed.
I would stick to a 99 with the c8.25 rear and no abs. Single cat, no cali emissions, upgraded intake, no head problems, no coil pack... Much simpler design
Pfft. I am up to 247,xxx miles on my 1998. The transmissions are still plentiful at the salvage yards and anywhere from $75-$175. Miles don't mean anything on an XJ. It doesn't consume oil or coolant, etc. Its starting to fall apart--I've needed to replace rusted brake lines, replace its 2nd radiator, replace a transmission line that rusted through, and a half dozen other things typical of a 20 year old vehicle. I can let the thing sit for 3 months without its battery going dead. I have been entertaining the idea of getting something newer to replace it, but realistically, nothing can based on how I use the Jeep.
I remember in HS a co worker at the grocery store I worked at had a 94 xj he let me drive it once and I wanted one so badly. I saved for two years to buy my 97. I was such the proud owner. by that time I was a senior and that bench seat was always folded down. I had my 97 until 2005 when the tranny finally went out. I was really sad Chrysler discontinued these I prob would have bought another one.
I consider the Cherokee(Yes, even this one) a crossover SUV due to its unibody construction and the fact that it combines the elements of a truck and wagon just like how a crossover combines the elements of a car and SUV.
buy it new & install a nice set of off road tires, like some BFG All Terrain & your pretty good to go. I never got stuck with driving thru up to 3 ft of snow my first winter & just moderate mud riding. The factory Goodyear tires worked for shit, yet as we all know....the sky & your wallet is the limit to customizing, lol.

Clean idle air control valve. spark plugs with right size of gap. Use quality synthetic oil. Flush cooling system, Change all rubber hoses in the cooling system (save steel spring in the lower radiator hose). Fan clutch can be worn out(test it). The electric fan's relay can be bad.(test it) Radiator cap might be to weak. The cooling system is the Cherokee's weak point, keep it from overheating and the engine will last.

I missed simple.
hugeslacker I agree. The Jeep makes you feel connected to the road, so much more than many other vehicles out there.
+AhJotahTube
They did keep building them longer.
I know that when I install a chinese made cps its going to fail in 6 months instead of 16 years lol
my dad got a new jeep 4x4 new in 97. the same red as the one here, it now has 220,000 miles and still runs good. great 4x4
My favorite Jeep!!! That look is awesome! I had the same wheels on my '04 Wrangler X.
Best Jeep ever.
The engine and the AW4 tranny are very durable. Jeep had a winner here. I can't stand to look at their newer Jeeps though.
The new ones aren't Jeeps, they're just Fiat garbage with Jeep stickers on them in order for Fiat to be able to sell their junk here in the US, they had to put the Jeep name on their vehicles.
arguably the best jeep ever made....
My best friend still has a 1996 Cherokee, and the styling is so much better than the junk today. Lots of memories in that ‘96.
I live for vintage reviews.🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Watchfulseven 52 I've been binge watching all of them hehe
I have own a number of cars and my 2000 Jeep Cherokee is the best all around car I've owned. I wish they still made them, I'd buy one in a heartbeat.
Looks just like the '98 I owned and loved :)
Owned two. Loved both.
I missed my old Cherokee so much
Got a 98 xj with 310k miles.
JEEP
I went out and bought our 3rd XJ because we seriously missed that 2nd one. Get one and get some!👍
Cherokee XJs are my favorite vehicle of all time
Project Dan H mine too!
My favorite SUV of all times
My dream car. I can't wait to buy one!!
haha, watched this video again and found my old comment. Well 4 years later I own two XJs...
@@Leo-lr4eq Nice. How are you liking them? I've owned a '96 for just over a year, and it's a great daily driver, very reliable.
$27k as tested 18 years ago, WOW! Big bucks! My uncle had a 1995 he bought new, that thing sounded like a Diesel when idling with the 4.0l
Ah, must have had a case of piston slap. No big deal...I've seen these engines go 350k with the pistons slapping like that.
I was just pricing new 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sports. You can get one well equipped for $27k today, larger, equally powerful as this Jeep, much safer and more modern.
In the end I bought a 1990s Range Rover for $3000 :)
Man, this is an old comment but How's that rangie holding up? shouldve brought an xj?
love these cars
Gorgeous car! ...as a middle age man...I can tell ya...we prefer this to the newer body styles
I would be so curious to see what that inline 6 could do with vvt and 4 valves per cylinder, might be able to shrink it to 3 liters.
I LOVE the Jeep cherokee
It's got a wrangler gage cluster!!
Long time to come. It's just so unfortunate that the Cherokee now a days is junk. Wish they still made the old school boxy Cherokee that we all freaking love
great vehicles!
These things are gold now if you can find a good one.
Had an old 91 best snow truck/suv I had
Great machine.
I'm on my third XJ bought each one at over a hundred and fifty thousand miles and drove each one a hundred thousand miles. 94 97 and currently driving a 96. Bought the 96 unmolested, it is no longer unmolested. 3" and 33's.
Love my 01 XJ. Should have kept the same styling forever. All it needs is the 392 scat pack. :)
I like it very much!
Got a 96 Country version with 192K on it. Still passes emissions every year.
My foster parent bought 1998" Red Jeep Cherokee Sport 4wd with 5-speed manual was best SUV ever we had. I missed the way of Cherokee and i wish the Chrysler should build like this! ' they had it since almost 10 years then we traded for new 2007 Liberty, then 2 years with jeep Liberty, dislike the liberty, then traded for brand new 2010 Deep blue, Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara,
I wish I should buy this jeep!
My 01' still has the original heads but if it would have some sort of catastrophic failure I'd probably still get it fixed.
yeah i'm in the same boat. I'll put a new engine in my Cherokee before buying a new SUV. I love my Jeep.
I have been entertaining the idea of getting something newer to replace it, but realistically, nothing can based on how I use the Jeep.
love my rusty xj
I miss my 97 sport. Had only 170,000 km
Plenty of low mileage examples for sale on eBay!
I wish I could find one of these un modified in this exact trim and color!
Please build again! Holding the two I have right now, Wouldn’t trade them for a wrangler
Since 12 years my Cherokee are my partner, my tool, my Transport, my time machine! The news models not have that escense
Do you guys have a Grand Cherokee review? Like 1993-1998 ZJ?
I consider the Cherokee(Yes, even this one) a crossover SUV due to its unibody construction and the fact that it combines the elements of a truck and wagon just like how a crossover combines the elements of a car and SUV.
Dude just look under each truck and you will see the difference
buy it new & install a nice set of off road tires, like some BFG All Terrain & your pretty good to go. I never got stuck with driving thru up to 3 ft of snow my first winter & just moderate mud riding. The factory Goodyear tires worked for shit, yet as we all know....the sky & your wallet is the limit to customizing, lol.
You've sold me, I'll take one.
$27,330 in 1997 is the equivalent of $44,071 today. The Jeep Cherokee's top model in 1997 was basically the equivalent of buying a fully loaded Wrangler Unlimited Sahara today
I miss my xjs so much :(
NICE CAR
Almost bought one of these new
Looks exactly like my daily
Maybe one day we'll realize how good we had it.
2:18 I didn't know Gus Fring worked at MotorWeek
I had own 3 Cherokees now I'm a proud owner of two a 99 with 285k miles and still going strong and a lifted 2000 with 170k miles and still missed my 87 Pioneer
Any advice for maintaining a Cherokee inline 6 with 190K (other than routine maintenance)?
Clean idle air control valve. spark plugs with right size of gap. Use quality synthetic oil.
Flush cooling system,
Change all rubber hoses in the cooling system (save steel spring in the lower radiator hose).
Fan clutch can be worn out(test it).
The electric fan's relay can be bad.(test it)
Radiator cap might be to weak.
The cooling system is the Cherokee's weak point, keep it from overheating and the engine will last.
energizerwolf thanks man!
The best SUV ever!!
descriptions says it all
