    9 years later this video continues to help tabla students learn the basics of tuning our tabla ❤ after spending an hour plus, I managed to get my tabla back to C! Initially some areas were stuck in B# but instead of fighting it too much, I kept going around bit by bit and suddenly it was almost perfect all around. Thanks so much for your sharing!

    Thank you a lot Sir for your clear explanation on how to tune the Tabla. I made the big jump today ! It was a long time that I look and listen Indian music. So at almost 51 years old I purchased my Tabla. He is on the way from Muktsar not so far from Dheli. People was very helpful hope I will receive my Mukta Das C# Tabla in few days now. In the meantime looking for your lesson. Thank you again !

    HI Manish .. if you can'not tune tabla all around.. try putting extra strap on that place again check opposite to that lower note.. that may help., if tabla is old, or not made properly , or gajra ( the place where the strap goes in) might be damaged or too low compare to other. regarding your 2nd question, yes tabla tuning will be affected even when you are playing tabla specially with rela or dhirdhir kirtak it will go slightly up, but if you tune tabla using more of pegs than gajra, more chances tabla will stay to that note longer. all the best, like i said tabla tuning is hard but you will get thru experience and practice

      SSA Ishmeet Singh. Thanks for your long story. i am pretty sure it will inspire many others..This is the first thing I tell all My Students. they require 3 Main Things to learn. They must have 1) Time & passion to learn 2) Access to Ustad/Teacher 3) Money to pay. when they have all these, i tell them to take advantage and work hard to learn. with God Grace, I am trying to give last 2 Things online.. All they need 1st one. i don't know about others but for me having knowledge from god is like Loan, i am paying back by teaching to others. All the best, Happy Learning. God Bless you and your Kirtan Group. Send me your Kirtan Group recordings if possible. my e mail address is tejsinghca@gmail.com

    Thanks Tej. A significant consideration: Western instruments and playing were debased away from Nature's pitch and Natural Law when 440 Hz was adapted gradually in stages, starting in 1832, and finalized by the Int'l Standards Organization (ISO). Many scientists hold that 440 Hz is harmful, and not usually found in nature, and studies have been done showing this. One of the advantages of most Indian musical instruments is that they can be tuned to any sound or note, unlike many Western instruments such as the piano, Western flute, etc. A suggestion to mention this in your video, as it is widely known in alternative culture, there are hundreds of videos on YT with 432 and/or 528 Hz, the pitches most often recommended and advocated by musicians and other experts who know about this, although there are other pitches that are also natural, such as all the pitches of the Schumann Frequency.

      Thanks for valuable information my Guru ji told me the same too even though in India its actually 444 ans 432 somewhere else.

    u are doing a great work sir.
    i got this question for u !!
    i was following u on this but the problem i got while tunning a tabla was that the andriod software u are using in the video does not match with the one u suggested us to download in comments.
    so my question is, should we also follow 12 o clock tune up procesure as u mentioned in the video with the new software ??

  • @ianporret8459
    @ianporret8459 9 років тому

    Hello Tej. I love your lessons. They're very clear and comprehensive, but I am a little confused about the construction of the tabla. I am a 18 year music veteran and I just bought my first tabla today. I have at least 6 tuners around my house and one of them is really nice and even has a tabla tuner setting on it. I just can't see how banging on the rim of the tabla with the tuning hammer does anything more than damage it, even if it's just lightly. I was wondering if you can use the camera to show the rim adjustment you do form your side? possibly give a better explanation of how those work? Also, my larger tabla doesn't have sticks in the strings to adjust the tuning that way. Instead, the string longer and wrapped in and interesting way at the bottom. I know the larger tabla does need to be tuned as well, right?
    I'm sorry I don't know the proper terms for the parts of the tabla, I'm still getting use to speaking Sanskrit for my yoga poses as well. if none of this makes sense, let me know and I'll include pictures

    • @TejSinghMusic
      @TejSinghMusic  9 років тому

      Hi Ian. actually hammering on Tala Rim - its Call Gajra. does help tuning tabla.. Don.t Hit on Rim, That Will damage the Tabla.. Gajra is where the strap goes thru.. so basically you will be hitting between two straps.

    • @ianporret8459
      @ianporret8459 9 років тому

      So when I hit the wooden dowles between the straps, it does make a slight difference in the tuning, so does tapping between where the strap goes into the top of the tabla just lock into the tuning? You seem to hit it from the top when it's too low. That seems Like it is twisting that string system to tighten the skin. When it's too high you hit it from the bottom of the twisted strap system and that seems like it is untwisting from the top of the tabla allowing the skin to be looser and bringing the pitch of that tabla lower. Am I completely mistaken what I'm seeing though? Are you only tapping the wooden dowels exclusively to change the tuning? Please clarify.
      Also, if my left tabla has no wooden dowels, how do I tune it?

    • @TejSinghMusic
      @TejSinghMusic  9 років тому

      For the left - Brass Drum - Baya.. we dont normally tune..just by listening you will know when it sound okay. you can check on tuner it should on f or g note. it should not be too tight or too loose. normally it doesnt have wood pegs, it just recently mfg. add small pc of wood, if its too loose.
      for the Wood Tabla, we tune from pegs, depend upon where did you buy tabla, they might not have tune at all . you can try putting additional strp on wood. if it is too loose. i will advise you get help of some local tabla player to tune. form the top, we do fine fine tuning. Lets see if you tuning tabla from C to C #, i will tune from peg first.. the difference is appr. 16 hz c4 note is 261 .63 c# 4 is 277.18.. i will tune appr. 15 hz from pegs and last 1 hz from top.. make Sense, Right ? private skype online lesson might help you more. all the best.

    • @ianporret8459
      @ianporret8459 9 років тому

      I live in Edmonton Alberta Canada, but I found an authentic, high quality tabla from an East Indian store that was closing down. It's nice and doesn't really need tuning that much, I'm just evening out the skin from one side to the other. I may look into a local tabla player, because I know ther are a lot. My right tabla allows for E3-F3 (yellow: willpower, the mind of the body - green: love & compassion for human & divine) and my left is showing G#2-A2 (blue/violet: the thought that comes from sight - violet: conscious thought). My tabla representing the thinking preception (left/feminine) seems to be between notes. Does that get adjusted while playing? I always found it proper to tune all my other instruments to a chromatic calibration of A-432.6Hz, but it still doesn't seem to be in tune with my left still...
      I'm figuring out the tuning process for my right one though.
      I'm a music and color therapist and I know my frequencies, but I've never really understood the workings of technology or Skype or FaceTime on my iPad. In the meantime, would you like to communicate over email? greatdyskensia@gmail.com

      +Chris Joseph Chris, I do have a small lava stone, rubbing with it I've been doing as I've seen on another You tube video.I have to smile at my efforts when I see what fist sized lava stones one sees in the videos. If there were a beach near me as opposed to the River Mersey in my part of England no doubt I could find a prize lava stone.Thanks for your note in reply./Brian C.

    • @chrisxjoseph
      @chrisxjoseph 8 років тому

      Brian Cokayne also its only a temporary fix, use until you can rehead or buy a new tabla entirely. And sometimes if pieces fall out its okay it wont effect the tonal quality to where the tabla is useless. But if it buzzes or keeps chipping away then I guess work on it if you can and use it til you cant. Sorry for the essay brotha just my 2 cents.

    • @briancokayne4182
      @briancokayne4182 8 років тому

      +Chris Joseph Chris,your two cents,two pennies here in northern England is very much appreciated& I'm smiling because of our resourcefulness, I probably did use a little too much woodglue in my original mix, but my reading or UA-cam viewing wasn;t so comprehensive at the time,.I have replaced tabla skins in the past & sat doing it in the foyet of Bombay Stores-big place in Nradford W.Yorks.Nobody minded-all that thong work-seemed to put a smile on a lot of people's faces seeing it done,twice as it happen,first skin they gave me slightly wrong size-you'll agree how much it matter between 5.5" or 5.25".It's all so interesting & now I've even made one of those hook tools for the thong tightening work.Lot of news here today of course concerning the death of Beatles arranger & recording manager (Sir)George Martin.What amazing work he did & never prejudiced against this or that,east or west,just guided by innovation & I'd say quality control. Sir, I'm a tabla beginner. This is a really informative video. So thanks a lot for this. However, I can't seem to find this chrome addict tuner app. Can you please share some link of this app, or some other app which is just as good? Also, sir, would like to understand what are the different notes itself?

    • @dayasagarkudva2689

      Depends on the Tabla player. The tuning of baya varies from player to player. The tone of the baya depends on the strength you apply. So just make sure that the baya makes the bass sound when you play it. If you have to apply more pressure then you have to tighten the pudi.

    Whenever I use my tuner, it picks up two notes at once, because the needle jumps around. There's a D note toward the center, but, around the edge, the note is a C or maybe C#.

    • @TejSinghMusic
      @TejSinghMusic  8 років тому

      Hello if you have Android Phone and using Same app - GString you can tune your Tabla to particular Note by Selecting Middle Icon - Tune *C* or *d* note, then Needle does not jump that much. I found its much easier to tune this way. Good Luck

    Hi, so I’m new at learning the tabla. Just actually bought my first one and I’ve been trying to tune it for like three weeks now. I have one like yours and I’ve put three straps on all the pegs but no matter where I put the pegs I can never get it to come even to a C. The highest I can get it is to an A3. Any advice on what I might be doing wrong ??

    Sir, when we are done with playing tabla, is it necessary to lower the notes of tabla...??

      Hi Jatin no need to lower the note, leave it at the same note

    Hello ji :),
    nice Video! I bought some new concert tablas in C# but i want to tune them into C. The Bayan is tuned in F#
    How can i tune both in C?
    Is it possible that you make Video to Show us - how to tune the tablas in diffrent scales?
    Highly appreciated :)

    • @TejSinghMusic

      Hi Alveth. Its same concept for tuning lower or higher. after playing tabla for a while, it will be down anyway in between C & C#. try to loose tension by bringing pegs up and use chromatic tuner. if you want to tune to d, then hit Pegs down and tune accordingly.

    Hi Tej,thank you for the very informative lessons. My friend borrowed my table and when returned the lowest note on the table was G and cannot go any lower. Ive changed the straps from 3 to 2 on the pegs but still the note is G. What can I do to get it down to C?. Can I tune it to G# or A ? Please advice, thanks.

    • @TejSinghMusic
      @TejSinghMusic  9 років тому

      It must be lower G not higher to bring it back to c you need to add strap not subtract meaning there should be four straps on peg not two. Put three straps on peg tune slowly to a then b then slowly c. I will take time to bring back to c don't rush all the best

    • @ejay209
      @ejay209 9 років тому

      Tej Singh Thanks for the quick response Tej. I have a chromatic tuner and a keyboard and the lowest note on the tabla is middle G. I'm also cross checking with your tabla lesson #27. Please advice. I'm Elijah from Sydney Australia.

    • @TejSinghMusic
      @TejSinghMusic  9 років тому

      On chromatic tuner G should be around 200 Hz c note would be around 260 Hz I am. Pretty sure tabla pitch gone down some time chromatic tuner give funny reading. Good luck if you are unable to tune tabla I will recommend you take tabla to someone who can tune it for you

    Very informative lesson and yes indeed tuning is so hard for me !! what do u do when some areas are showing G# on my tabla i just neglect those areas ? half of tabla is below D# and other half below C# I dunno how to bring them all to C#, any tips thanks for your time

    • @TejSinghMusic
      @TejSinghMusic  9 років тому +1

      Hi Hasan.. i will try tune tabla to lower note rather than higher. in your case C#. when checking with tuner, i will wait tuner to give proper reading.. hit Taa, and wait at least 2-3 second before checking again..

    • @911hasan
      @911hasan 9 років тому

      Tej Singh Sir, thanks for the tip I some how managed to bring all the notes to C# or atleast very close to C# but made sure the Na where I usually play is C# perfect. My other doubt is some of my C# shows 277 Hz but some of them show C# 544 Hz what is happening then should I bring them all to 277 if so how
      Thanks a lot for your time.

    • @TejSinghMusic
      @TejSinghMusic  9 років тому +1

      Hi Normally i dont pay much attention to Hz as long as needle is in center of the note where you are tuning i might be one or two notes out of tune.. also when i tune , i take my time to hit taa then wait at least 3-4 seconds for tuner to read properly
