I love that I just randomly clicked on this video and realized I'm watching you and reading your book Birds on the Couch! I've had many budgies but your book is so helpful and I always feel like I'm learning something new!
Thank you so much for this video! I'm a 22 year old girl turning 23 on friday and getting my first parakeet that day! I've had 2 finches before and my little sister had a parakeet, however our house flooded and my mom put her birdcage outside on the upper deck to keep her safe. unfortunately the wind was too strong, knocked the cage over and the bird flew away. Anyway, just moved into my first apartment and getting the bird to keep me company! Thanks again it's a big help!
when the budgie was sitting on her hand and flew off to go on top of the cage i saw a flower pot in the backround that looked like a budgie was sitting in it!
Thank you for your video! It was a great refresher course. My new Budgie Paco has been here about a month now, and adapting well. My other 2 lived for over 6 years. I have had parakeets for most of my life; since I was in a playpen!
I'm so glad to hear that it's normal for the bird to just sit there and not move or eat for the first day... My partner and I just got our first parakeet yesterday, and it's been sitting in one spot the entire time, except for at one point last night when it seemed to go crazy in its cage for a few seconds as it fluttered around. It's still silent.. It made two small chirps last night.. I don't think he's eaten yet.. Hope he warms up to us soon!
Thanks. It helped a lot. I just got a parakeet yesterday and I want to give him some time to adjust because he still hesitates to get on my finger. Plus he's REALLY energetic so I want to give him room to explore. Thanks again.
Thank you for the video, what a beautiful bird! I will be picking up my hand raised parakeet in the next week, and I have had a few parakeets growing up. They really are wonderful pets!
He's quite a beautiful bird! I have a male skyblue greywing that almost looks like him, save for the normal pattern wings. He's one of my favorites, and I named him after Socrates, the Greek Philosopher. :D
Thx for the video! My daughter loves it! She's been bugging us for parakeets for a while now, and she watched this, and other of your videos quite a few times amazing to see a 7yr old watch and mimic you! Now that we just got 2 birds, we'll see how things go :) I hope she will watch these videos with a more specific interest and attention now! My 4yr old son is less interested, but he watches right along too ;)
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. I WILL NOW THINK MORE SERIOUSLY ABOUT GETTING A BUDGIE. HAVING WATCHED YOUR EXCELLENT PRESENTATION, I FEEL THAT I CAN BETTER DESERVE A BUDGIES COMPANY.
I died when she said she uses it for hot dogs...but anyways I feel like clipping the birds wings is so sad & it even sounds just so depressing. I want to get a parakeet within the next few months and I definitely wont be clipping its wings....
Venessy 420 a lot of times the pet stores have them cut but you can always grow them out P.S this is coming from experience so it may not be true everywhere hope you have fun with your baby/babies😀
There are two types of leg bnds: a closed band is slipped on when the chick is still in the nest, an open band can be put on at any time. The closed band has the breeders' ID and year of hatching. An open band is for identification and is required of birds from California and for imported birds.
I've had multiple birds and have bought many cuttlebones in my lifetime, not once did it ever occur to me that those things came from cuddlefish. Learn something new everyday.
Awe :) I remember when I had a parakeet.. I had him for the lonnnngest time but he died of old age. He was the sweetest thing as well me and my dad taught him how to say 'pretty bird' he would say 'pt pt pt pt pteeee burr' lol I hope your parakeet was/is just as amazing and I bet it was/is :D
It's so hard to outsmart a bird but the following tricks should help: Put the regular food in a bowl on the floor, put what you are pushing the regular cup. Put the chosen item thru a food processor with a piece of wheat bread till it looks like seed. Put the choosen item in a cup in front of a mirror. Thanks for trying to broaden the diet.
this video is so great, i cant believe u had thatparakeet for only 1 day and already it sat on your hand!!i got a new one on the 24th of december but shes still a little scared, my other 2 budgie are not scared at all and they let me pet them. i hope i can establish a great bond with my new one just like my other ones. thanks for this vid :)
Natural tree branches with their varying diameters are my favorite perches. Lots of toys-yes but not all in the cage at the same time. Leave room for the bird.
Parakeets love to climb and play on their cage, so make sure you buy a cage that has horizontal bars, which will make it easier for your parakeet to climb.
We're just about to get a BEAUTIFUL keet from our breeder for $25. We had chosen an english budgie to begin with but he caught a really terrible infection that only budgies get and passed away. HE was about $60. It's really funny though because the cage we ordered is 10 times more expensive than he is!! The cage bigger than the one in the video, has a good bar spacing for his size, and is coated metal so no chance of illness from rusted cheap bars.
I have a blue parakeet named Butchie and he is 5 years old. We got him when he was a baby. He loves to be out of his cage, and he loves to scowl at us as he sits inside the cage and plan how he and his minions are going to achieve global domination!
Wow, 21 years!? I had no idea parakeets could live that long. My grandparents used to have parakeets and they each lived for about five years, which the vet said was a good life span. I'm thinking about getting a parakeet. I'll be leaving home soon and moving out of state and would like a companion.
Parkeets come from a very dry area and do not drink a lot. They sometimes get enough liquid from veggies that you offer but they still do drink as needed. Mine always head for the water cup when I change it in the morning so be sure the water is nice and fresh.
Since we are talking about pet birds, the cage is used mainly as a bedroom with the bird being out with its' flock (you) most of the time. My bedroom is a lot smaller than my house. Birds fly in the wild to find food and avoid predators. As a pet they really do not need to fly
Pleeeeeeeeeeease upload more!! I will watch all your bird videos! I wish I could visit you lol. I'm not crazy I swear! I just know when I find a genuinely good person and you are. keep up the videos please!
Thanks for this wonderful information! I learned a lot and is going to get a parakeet! I, first was scared that I am going to hurt the parakeet because I don't know anything about it! But, now I do learned something!
Good question. If you are getting a young bird, they are usually fairly easy to take out but don't stress it by chasing it a lot. Just go in and get it. When they are a bit more set in their attitude, I'll leave them in the cage for a day to adjust but then out so they don't get territorial about their cage. If your cage is difficult , take the top off to get the bird out. They like to go up.
Budgies, unlike some birds, can live perfectly long lives without another budgie. If given toys, a mirror, and you to bond with, they will be fine! My friend has a budgie thats about 7 years old now and she's only ever had the one! Now if you were getting a lovebird then its defiantly not recommended you get one unless youre with it 24/7
Omg! That was AWESOME advice now Ik wat kind of cage to get, wat to expect wen he first gets in his cage and I didn't know I had to give them tht calcium bar thing. Thanks SOOO much! :)
I lost it when she said she used the grate to cook hotdogs, I can't even watch the rest of the video I'm crying of laughter *edit:* the more I replay it the funnier it gets
We did have our parakeet's wings clipped initially for taming purposes, but then we let them grow back to full length with his next molt. He then enjoyed free flight outside his cage every day for the 12 years we had him.
He's an English budgie. I don't have one but it says those kinda budgies are the most talkative budgies. I have regular budgies and non of them talk. Cool though.
I have always had some grit on the floor of the cage and they will often go down to eat some. The only time I see folks having a problem with it is when the grit is up higher and there is no available food in the cage. Wing trimming as we show on our trimming video, will make the bird less apt to try to fly since it is off balance but still able to break it's fall safely going down
Our parakeets start about $15:00 but you need to look at what is available. English show budgies may cost much more. Get a cage that you like, that is easy to clean and as large as you wish. The yearly cost is very modest and there are many ways to save money. A high quality food is important but you can blow the shells off the seed instead of throwing it out every day and suppliment with your food. Enjoy your bird.
I remember when I got my last bird in 2003, she first wanted to eat. That was the first thing she did. She will die this day or the next days, I can't help her. She always drops down, she is so powerless. :(
Your first bird is usually the best. If this one bites, just ignore it untill the bird figures out it does not get a response. Never have the bird train you to say "ouch ".
I agree. Ideally the birds foot should go 2/3 around the perch. Sitting on the same size perch all day is like standing in the same shoes. Variety is best so I prefer to use a natural tree branch. It has irregularlarities that means the foot gets more exercize.
Because they can! In the wild they would hollow out a nest in rotten wood to lay eggs but they also may be looking for better or different food or just having fun when they realize it gets your attention.
Great video. I have 5, Paul(blue), Gaga(white) they are together then there are Rudini, Finni and Golden. They enjoy spend time in the cage. I leave open for a good time(all day actually). Only Gaga, Paul and Finni leave. I am waiting for Golden and Rudini feathers to grow. They were short when i bought them. The are to grow in the next couple months. Excited.
I had parakeets. The last pair got some kind of disease. The beaks grew and the droppings were green and loose. I think it had to have been liver disease due to the diet. I tried to vary the diet, but it was too late. That's a great cage. I had one like it. I think it's made in Japan.
If you are afraid to hold a bird, I agree the bird will be frightened. If however the bird senses you're confident and speaking calmly, it will be fine.
I've had parakeets/budgies as pets for over 20 years. One of mine lived to be 15 years old. Some advice: The perches need to be at different levels. The same level perches aren't good. Also, gravel is not needed. Birds can digest the seeds without gravel. You can get a millet holder for the millet. No vitamins are needed unless instructed by an avian vet. Putting vitamins in the water creates bacteria that can be harmful to a pet bird. That information comes from my avian vet. Budgies make wonderful pets. Always give them plenty of attention.

I love you dear lady! I was raised with these birds and I love them! Your suggestions are so spot on!
When I lived near Rockville I visited Animal Exchange all the time. This is a great video for beginners. It's everything we did with our parakeet.
Thank you for your video! It was a great refresher course. My new Budgie Paco has been here about a month now, and adapting well. My other 2 lived for over 6 years. I have had parakeets for most of my life; since I was in a playpen!
Miss Ruth is so sweet. I love her videos! I can't wait to get my budgie!

he is beautiful! i have a few and they really are one of the best pets you can get.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. I WILL NOW THINK MORE SERIOUSLY ABOUT GETTING A BUDGIE. HAVING WATCHED YOUR EXCELLENT PRESENTATION, I FEEL THAT I CAN BETTER DESERVE A BUDGIES COMPANY.

My son and I really enjoyed your video - very well done.
My favorite line: "i dont like grates!..... i just take it out of the cage and make hot dogs." Haha i love her!
I love the way you presented this video..... I truely love your work

So cute!
This video was really cool it has good info 2.🐦🐦🐦I love birds especially parakeets.

I love you. Seriously I wish you were my Grandma. I want to give you a hug and eat your cookies =0. Thank you for your advice on my new Budgie!
Great video. I have 5, Paul(blue), Gaga(white) they are together then there are Rudini, Finni and Golden. They enjoy spend time in the cage. I leave open for a good time(all day actually). lol at the budgie wiggling
I had parakeets. The last pair got some kind of disease. The beaks grew and the droppings were green and loose. I think it had to have been liver disease due to the diet. I tried to vary the diet, but it was too late.
That's a great cage. I had one like it. I think it's made in Japan.
i think that parakeet that she has will live a long time with her professional skill's of taking care of him/her
i just got my bird and that bird sit there all day
If you are afraid to hold a bird, I agree the bird will be frightened. If however the bird senses you're confident and speaking calmly, it will be fine.
I brought another parakeet and now he is acting fine and more active and not at the bottom of the cage anymore but thanks for your help
Thank you for your time and the great video. I have 2 parakeets and just got 9 more. When will be the right time to move them all together?.
Really good video keep up the good work!!!
Very informative and clearly stated set-up of cage and basic standard of care of budgies!!!! Thanks for the information for beginners of budgies, good job, everyone should trya parrotkeet out, budgies, give plenty of snuggies, and lotsa love too!!! At least parrotkeet breeders have lotsa selection of colors and plenty of this type of breed of birds, oh I mean species of birdsies, oopsie. 😊😀.....
when she said I use the grate to cook hot dogs lmfaoo
Great question! I hope we can have other people weigh in on this since I have no clue. It seems to me that it is an area that could do with some scientific research and I am going to suggest it as a topic for a Science Cafe discussion topic in Rockville, Maryland.
One thing that does occur to me is the reproductive rate is somehow connected to the longevity, with smaller more vulnerable birds hatching more chicks. Then there are our chickens...
Wow I watched this after getting parakeets and I should have thought to use those "things" to cook hot dogs. But now they are filled with bird poo
Parakkets are the best pets ypou can have they are very tame and the 3 i had their first day they got used to perching on my finger and sit there...
best wishes

My budgies have their wings left, and flies freely around in my room. No one has ever flied into a window.
