As a quadcopter novice with RC plane experience (I ordered a JJRC H8C DFD), this video helps a lot on basic safety and common sense tips. Losing the copter, damaging something, or hitting a car or kid would be bad news. Safety is more important than anything.
Thanks for your abundance of info. Documenting your experiences like this is most helpful. Just getting started myself and it helps speed up all the fun we have with our Phantom.
Not sure where the dislikes are coming from but I for one am COMPLETELY grateful for your willingness to HELP others. Every tip you gave was helpful to me and thank you VERY much for sharing your wisdom. If someone shares something they thought you could have done differently for you to consider in making the video better, then amen. But just disliking? Its not a reflection on you dude. THANK YOU!
This is THE most inclusive and helpful video I've seen on the DJI Phantom. I'm hoping to get one soon and have been trying to prepare myself, and this video combines the best parts of all the videos I've seen. Keep up the good work man!
Thank you so much..I bought this same base phantom for my uncle and was trying to find a great video to help with setup and running of the phantom properly..I have seen a few videos but have to say this is the best one so far..The advice is great and the tips invaluable..Thanks again.
Zebulon - In the Assistant Software, you have to open the tab in the lower right corner in order to switch to manual mode. ZIts a little weird and difficult to find. Once you DO have manual mode setup, be VERY careful on your first flight. Get it up in the air about 75' or so, before switching into manual mode. Be prepared to switch back to gps mode quickly. ---- I have the most current firmware - no glitches and no problems. ---- I'll check out your channel for sure!!!
Great videos, thanks for taking the time to help us newbies, People like you is what this world needs more of. Again thank you. Looking forward to getting a second quad copter.
Good video, a couple things I might suggest, I shoot with GoPro Black edition in 1080P and 5 MP still with no issues plus I have the other higher quality modes if I want them. I do agree that compass calibration is not needed on every flight but its cheap insurance to do it anytime you have traveled some distance from where you last did a calibration. Lastly, on the compass calibration, you should point the Phantom nose down when doing the vertical part of the calibration.
10:00 well, filming in 1080p in 60fps is a good reason to get a higher model gopro, also 1440 in 48fps works well as you can crop it to 1080p, reduce a bit of the fisheye and have the video totally stabilized by software, but for hobby use only, go for the white ;)
Mate, thanks so much for this. It's so awesome that you put so much time into this video to help others. I have a Phantom all ready to go and have not yet done the first flight and this video is a gold mine of information. Thank you!
Hi Jim, Big thankxx to your posts. Was made redundant at the end of last week but hey, it's summer, even here in Scotland so this was the catalyst to finally get the quadcopter I had been wanting. No real worries about getting a new job in the next 6 weeks so decided to enjoy the summer while it lasts. The crucial factor for a copter was a GPS out the box solution. I got a helicopter, very cheap last Christmas which took off 100 feet vertical and disappeared and was finally found in a neighbours hedge 4 days later. Parrot was a possibility but the Parrot 3 promo vids promise a copter in November so the Phantom (£389) with camera and GPS was the decider. It is the FC40 and yes, I have probably shot myself in the foot long term for upgrade ability but hey 720, 30 fps on a calm day will do for now :) I watched the 2nd part of your 25 tips video 1/2 an hour ago after my first mishap in the garden. I had a clothes drying pole going through the legs of the Phantom in case it decided to fly away and yup, I switched off the transmitter first...duh!! All of a sudden the 4 motors went into full take off mode and I kid you not Jim, it started to lift the clothes pole and slide off the end of it. I put my foot on the end of the pole and it tried to slide to the other end...I just weighed the clother dryer pole it's 1.3 kg... that's heavier than a bag of sugar. Eventually I lay on the pole and managed to get to the battery which fortunately I had not put fully into the compartment and unplugged it without lacerating my arm. My wife came running out thinking a plane had flown overhead. Again, a big thank you for your vid's which I am still working through. The DJI instructions at times (and I'm a techy) are pretty poor PDF's. If you read the blurb, Red/Green means 'Take it back your dealer' which I thought was a bit suspect until you explained about the GPS ( I apparently was connected to 6!... 3 green 1 red!) Shortly after that revelation it started to rain (This is Scotland in Summer after all :) Methinks you maybe getting a PayPal order for landing skids and rotor protectors in the next couple of weeks. Hey guys, I'm from Ireland and love flying my drone and sharing my videos on UA-cam. Just for better video stability, I was just wondering where would be the best buy for a gimbal? I have the FC40 or is it not recommended? thanks a million and Greetings from Ireland!
Hey Jim, You forgot to tell us what the drone does when the battery runs low????? Does it just shut down in mid-air and fall down to the ground???? Does it have a low battery sensor that returns to home and blinks or do a lil jig to let you know???
It's amazing how much things have changed in a relatively short amount of time, even your show was a lot different , so serious and straight forward. LOL
Demunseed I have found that it really doesn't matter which way it's pointed. It will still calibrate no matter which way your pointed, up or down. But I suppose UP LED is the better choice.
Hi Jim, Sorry if you already have a video out there that already answers this, I just couldn't find it. I have basically used this video as a shopping list for upgrading my phantom. Have you made a tutorial on wiring the osd and other accessories into the phantom?
No but I need to.... I have the ezOSD but i think my NEXT one is going to be the iosd mini...... I like the screen info better. It is relatively simple to figure out tho. Just search youtube for "ezOSD instal" and try that for now....
Great information video. I have a 1st gen Dji Phantom. I wanted to upgrade my props to the vision props. Do I have to change my stock 1st gen Dji Phantom motors? Or will the self tightening vision props work?
Does your Phantom have all silver prop nuts? Or does it have 2 silver and 2 black? If they are all silver, you need to replace two of your motors (caddy corner) with CCW (counter clock wise) motors.
Thanks for your tips! You really packed your DJI with a LOT of stuff: prop guards, wires, etc. That may explain your 8 min flight time on a standard DJI battery - I get about 12 min flight time from the same battery with just standard DJI and lightweight Sony action cam.
Great - but you'll quickly get bored just flying around.... you need to put FPV and OSD on your bird and THEN you'll be into some real adventure and FUN! (Happy flying)
Thanks for the video - i have the 2 but most of the information is useful for what ever model that you have.. would be helpful to have links to all the items you talk about in the video
23 "dislikes" - whats up with that? Maybe it was 1) my funky ass haircut.....2) My dirty phantom 3) Did I miss something? 4) they're all pussies.... ;-)
Maybe the overly generalized tone from the very beginning had something to do with it? There are few "standards" and "musts" in this hobby and with this platform...and much of your commentary is subjective to the experienced multi-rotor pilot while misleading to the inexperienced once they spend some time with it.
I appreciate the better suggestions regarding Phantom modification - the bigger battery and access door, blade protectors, etc. You made the video, and you really can't imagine why there might be dislikes? Really? That's amazing, if so. I guess you'll find out, down the line. I recommend you keep a bail money fund set up. Good journey.
Now you've got me a bit freaked out about the batteries. Where do you store them when you're not using them? I've got them in the plastic case with the foam insert that the thing came with. Doesn't sound like that's a good idea. Sounds like they should be stored in an flame proof area (not too hot or cold or wet) like the basement in your metal ammo box (insulated so it doesn't short out) plus in the discharged state. I have one that is still fully charged in there! Don't have a metal box so I'm trying to figure out what to do with it.
Very informative video! I learned a thing or two here. Also nice to see a phantom fully loaded up. Still have to make some modifications myself like attaching a gimbal and video feed.
The DJI stock charger WILL charge the Zippy batteries.... no worries my friend. I do recommend you look at the Hi-Tech (4 battery) charger so you can charge four batteries at once.
Great video, thanks for taking the time to do this. Someone here mentioned using the gopro feed for the FPV instead of having an extra camera. Do you recommend this? If so could you point me to what equipment is needed to make that work? Thanks again!
Yes you can - If your using FPV just run a video cable from your FPV (or ezOSD) directly to your USB plug on the side of your gopro. Go to readymaderc.com and search for "gopro to fpv video cable). It will also power your gopro directly from your lipo battery.
It's not a bad idea, just takes some serious practice. Be very careful when your "approaching objects" because they can come up on you faster than you can react... ( when your flying FPV without a gimbal, there is more a sense of "true flight" since the camera banks WITH the aircraft... WITH a gimbal on, the camera always stays level so it can be a bit disorienting while flying)
Thanks for the tips. I ordered a Zippy 2800 battery based on watching this video. Unfortunately it is not even close to fitting into the battery compartment. Just thought you might want to know that. Does Zippy make different sizes of the 2800?
Demunseed Thank you. I will do that. I just ordered the "Zippy 2800mah battery" as stated in your tips. Perhaps this additional information should be added. Thanks again and keep up the good work.
Firstly, thanks for making this video! In regards to camera choice, it depends what you're using your footage for. Some will be happy with just 720/60p like you say in the video, but for those needing footage for higher-end productions, a Hero 3 Black edition shooting in 2.7k is the best option. This gives you great video clarity, the resolution lets you correct any 'jerky' footage easier and 2.7k also gives you the opportunity to re-frame if needed.
Hi! Thanks for the video. Question around flight time. You said that using a 2800mah battery you actually doubled the flight time. How can it be done by adding +600mah comparing to the stock battery? It does not sound like a good measurement.
Hello, wonderful information. What do you recommend as a starter quad. I do fly helicopters. I do want to move up to the one you have until I feel comfortable flying a less expensive one. I do have a go pro and will do filming. Thank you,
good tips ,one question i noticed you were using the Gopro white edition camera what setting are working best for you in your video's. what setting to reduce fisheye look?
Just 2 questions. 1) I have been flying planes for a few years and I noticed that you pace the throttle stick on the radio in the middle position. On my planes, you have to pull the stick all the way down ( motor off ) when first turning the plane on. 2) Do the extended skids interffer with the view of the camera. I have been flying cheap quad copters to get the hang of flying for about 4 months now and I would like to do the FPV with the goggles. Also, what's your take on the Walkera Scout4?
Ive been flying RC for over 15 years. Ive been flying quads and drones for about 3 years+ 2) The sticks on a phantom "auto center" while the sticks on a 3DR drone do not. 3) No, the skids were engineered to stay out of your camera shot, except in HIGH WINDS where the A/C is pitching sideways. 4) Walkera has the worst QC of any of the manufacturers. Their stuff is pretty "junky" overall.
nice tips video, lots of good sharing.. i am new to the phantom 2 but i would assume much applies to from this video to my phantom 2 unit.. do you feel prop guards take some flight time away from the battery?
just read the rest if the posts and you had answered that zippy question already with 3s 30c...do you also happen to have a solution for wobbling? after take off phantom wobbles and seems to have issues with power distribution to motors...not sure if they are supposed to run smooth with each Stick movement...mixer is Quad rotor x (as others had posted that as a potential issue)
Great info. Im about to get my first phantom and starting off with all your experience here as a guide is much appreciated. The flight times with a go pro/gimbal/FPV still seem short to me and that's the set up I want to fly with. Is there any other ways to increase flight times that you could recommend? 2 batteries in series, cutting away unneeded plastic from the phantom body (maybe drilling masses of holes all throughout the body like in the hot rod days). I would like to get 20-25 minute flights if possible. Also, whats the lag time like between the Glasses and the FPV camera? Again, great stuff.
- if you want 20 minutes definitely get a Phantom 2. a Phantom 1 will NOT do it, even with 2 batteries. - two batteries in series is just a bad idea on a phantom one due to the overall weight on the aircraft = reduced flight time and HARD landings. - i would NOT cut into the plastic - that would be insane.... ;-) - there is literally NO lag time between the goggles and GoPro - you are viewing in REAL TIME - if there was lag time, you'd be crashing into walls!!! - hope this helps - jim
Great suggestions for a newbee. Just taking my time to learn the Vision 2 + and a lot of info is relevant. Love the idea on the skids. Now just need to let the winds die down enough (Colorado) to get out there more.
Hey love your videos got a question for you I had the red and yellow come up on my phantom so I went through the compass dance and still I get the dreaded lights so I did the magnet thing too still same thing so we're do I go from here?
Great video thanks for all the info. Just picked up a phantom about a month ago and have been doing all kinds of mods to it thanks to you and a few other youtube videos. Love the skid idea too, might 3D print some for mine. One question I do have is in your experience what seems to be the max weight for the phantom? with fpv, brushless gimbal, gopro, bigger batteries I know its getting heavy but based on your experience what is too heavy?
Hey I bought the FC40 bcuz it's cheaper and first time rc flier. I did pretty good crashed a few time into the bushes and trash can. But i haven't did the compass calibration but still managed to fly this sucker and went smoothly. Also do I need to plug the phantom to my computer for NAZA firmware?
Demunseed and YES - you definitely want to plug your phantom into your PC and do your firmware upgrade and advanced calibration.... happy flying my friend.
Hey nice video..very helpful. But im wondering... you know that "Receiver Advanced Protection" on the software, should i have that on? do you recommend it?
You could always go for a Mobius mini cam instead of all that gopro add on. Does everything gopro does and possibly more. It's lighter and MUCH cheaper. Great video with very useful tips. Thanks 👍
Jim, your not evil, your a genius.. I've watched your vid four times, I think I got it. I don't see any string around your prop guards, What's your thoughts on that?
I think the string idea was a bad one on DJI's part - its just one more thing to get hung up on tree branches. If you go into a tree, you want it to fall thru to the ground and not get hung up, 60' off the ground.... (been there, dun that)
i see you have about 100 spare batteries hahah. so i can see why you dont care for a dual set up. i spent most my funds just buying this copter. ill save n get a few batteries- blue label :) Thanks
Too heavy? You added every single mod possible and added weight, yes i understand the added weight doesnt amount to a whole battery. but at that point a spare battery would come in handy, no? isnt there a motor upgrade for the FC40? or can i just buy Phantom 2 motors if they are an upgrade?
Watched the whole video, good stuff! Don't yet have a quad, looking to become familiar with my options. Definitely going to be doing lots of photography. QUESTION: How many flights do you have with your DJI? I'm guessing a lot, is there any components that wear out?
I've got hundreds of hours on quadcopters... the only thing that "wears" on your phan tom is the MOTORS... you might want to replace them once a year (or so) depending how often you fly.
I'm noticing that many owners get the GoPro camera instead of the standard Phantom II FPV camera. Any reason I should NOT get the factory FPV? What are the cost comparisons between the two choices? Thanks!
Dear Jim ......thanks to post this amazing video. I have a Phantom 2 with IOSD and gimball 3d with a Go pro atached and I almost lost this when I lose the TX signal and it returned home by himself. At the moment when it was coming to land, it was arriving about 2 meters away the home point and landing over a tree and some rocks. Fortunately I run to catch him before he crash over the rocks. I ask. What may I do to take the Phantom control when he is near me again? Sorry my poor english ok................Many thanks.......Mario (Brazil)
When the Phantom 2 goes into "Home" mode because it either 1) low on battery or 2) looses connection to the transmitter, you can take back control by clicking the right top switch from GPS mode to ATT1 back to GPS mode. The Phantom will flash the red lights and you should have manual control.
Demunseed OH and BTW - With the Vision props, I'm getting a solid 10-11 minutes of flight time (fully loaded with camera and OSD). The only downside of Vision props is that they are a little "brittle" so be careful with them, especially on hard landings....
"DJI Phantom MOD KIT" shows you how to install - skip to middle. :-). If yer having a little trouble with the skids, don't worry about cracking or breaking them, just WRIGGLE them down till they Click on.... no worries my friend....
Thanks Yes I have the skids installed. I got legs from Peter so u am waiting for them to come in to add shelf and extenders. Now doesn't the shelf make one side longer? Also what is the range of the Vision plus for the controller range, 800m?
The Shelf Unit adds minimal weight to one side of your Phantom that the FC will compensate for. (some guys are putting an additional shelf on the opposite side). I've been using mine (on just one side) for over a year without any issues. The "effective average" range for a Vision+ without a range extender is right around 2500' LOS..... (unless you have "limits" set in your settings.
Go to a wide open FLAT area and give it a test run out to 2500' around 80' AGL... Worse thing that can happen is it will RTH. (make damn sure you have good home point locked down before attempting - 6+ satellites
Demunseed No, no, I mean the little ones weighing just 1.5 ounces that you buy on eBay for $20 where you text it a command to return it's location and it sends back a link to the position on Google maps. If the built-in GPS loses it's location and it flies away, like some of them are reported to do, that wouldn't do you much good would it?
Ken Skid Here's one on Ebay for $24 that I know will work but you can find them for just $20 if you search. It runs on 12 volts and has a cellular modem and GPS module inside weighing just 1.5 oz. You need GSM phone service to activate it by putting in the SIM and calling it with the Administrator's phone number. The cheapest voice and text only service for $10 every 90 days on T-Mobile works fine, you don't need data unless you want to follow it's progress constantly on a map in real time. Some models also have an output that can operate a relay to do something like disable a vehicle or in this case maybe sound an alarm to aid in finding the copter. There are cheaper Mini models that are even smaller but I don't know how or if they work. Avoid the similar looking ones with a graphic of a motorcycle on the case since they don't actually have a GPS but claim to work by location of cell towers, problem is some of the towers can be up to 1 mile from where they are supposed to be on the map! www.ebay.com/itm/300975628531
A couple a questions if you don't mind. ON the puffy Lipo's. What does that mean, is the batter at it's end of life? Is there danger of explosion when this starts? How do you get 11 min. flt. time. The best I can get is 6 min. with my 1.1 and most of the time 4 or 5 min. Only maybe 20 or 30 charges on the batt. and that is with the zippy 2800MAh. As far as the thumbs down I would say it all what you said and things like the nicked props you are flying with (12:26) and the little stuff like that is not the compass dance. Some people just love it when one is not perfect and like to thumbs down people for any little thing. For me there is plenty of good stuff in your videos and none of us are prefect and have out own ways of doing things and that just rubs some the wrong way. Keep the videos coming ...but I would leave the nicked props out of the videos.
Demunseed To answer your question on Lipos.... If they are just a Teeny bit "puffy" - don't worry. If it starts to get "chubby" it'd time to get rid of it. A puffed battery is not going to explode on you, but they ARE more dangerous then a new battery. So..... just be careful.
Hey ya Bert - Just shoot me an email to jimbowers@foothill.net. Just tell me which phantom version you have and we'll get them right off to you. ($26 shipped in the USA) ($32 shipped international)
hi there, ı watched u vid and and i am really glad to find u vid.n share w us u great experience. if u dont mind may i ask, is it possible to use copter with rainy wheather. electronic device may effect?? (pls forgive my ignorence). Thanx alot !!
Demunseed, is there a wattage/amps difference when changing the props on a Phantom 1.1 from and 8in prop to a 9in prop? Will the it exceed the amps on the ESC?
Wow - this is the first I've heard of this Lipo.... I checked the size comparison to the zippy 2800 and it LOOKS like its too big to fit in a Phantom. Let me know if you find out otherwise k? (Thanks for the heads up)
Hi Jim, just rewatching this because I want to get a Zippy 2800 but just wondering if you could specify exactly which model it is as HobbyKing have 3 different kinds: 1 4S1P, a 6S1P and a 3S1P. Which one are you using in this video (I can't read what's on the closeup of the battery)? Or which type do you recommend? Thank you :)
Hello, Can you help! I have phantom 1 just sit there with 2 blink green, I tried to connect to naza m to do imu calibration but the software and the drone can’t connect talk to each other, please tell me what to do.

Great - but you'll quickly get bored just flying around.... you need to put FPV and OSD on your bird and THEN you'll be into some real adventure and FUN! (Happy flying)
Thanks! (My Fatshark gear is bound for delivery this week ;) )
Excellent!!! You'll frikkin LOVE IT!!!
There are few "standards" and "musts" in this hobby and with this platform...and much of your commentary is subjective to the experienced multi-rotor pilot while misleading to the inexperienced once they spend some time with it.
yeah.... maybe thats it.... :-/
I wouldn't worry about 36 dislikes out of 860 likes and a total of 90k+ views. You can't please everyone and think your videos rock !
thank you Tom... i appreciate that support a lot...
FASCINATING! Getting hooked on drone photography!
Once your in - your hooked my friend!!!
Very good instructional video. I have lost one in a "fly away" into The Solent between Portsmouth and The Isle of Weight
total bummer.... sorry
Don't have a metal box so I'm trying to figure out what to do with it.
quit worrying about them.... put them in a metal box and go out and FLY!!!!
Great video. When i power up my phantom1 all i now get is rapid flashing red. This just started and i dont know why. Any advice?
Very informative video! I learned a thing or two here.
Also nice to see a phantom fully loaded up. Still have to make some modifications myself like attaching a gimbal and video feed.
Hey Jim, have you done a video on maintenance? Oiling motors? Just wondering. If you did, sorry but I haven't seen it. Thanks.
Noit yet - but good idea - thanx
all ways like to watch the old vids, A lots have changed in 2 or 3 years!
Nice vid and Handy tips. Do you have a video about installing the gimbal with go pro?
Thanks for the video very informative. Does DJI Charger charge the Zippy 2800 or do I need to get a charger for it?
Demunseed Thanks for the quick reply!
Jim Burnard BTW - do you plan to install a gimbal? Flying FPV thru the gopro with a gimbal attached can be VERY disorienting...
Demunseed Yes in fact that was the plan. I have the Zenmuse H3-2D that comes with it. Not a good idea? Thanks!
Then you bought the wrong battery - order the Zippy 2800mah 30c 3s Lipo - it'll fit....
Demunseed
Thank you. I will do that. I just ordered the "Zippy 2800mah battery" as stated in your tips. Perhaps this additional information should be added. Thanks again and keep up the good work.
After your remark - i added a few more details to the video - thanks for the heads up my friend!
GREAT POINTS! I completely agree...
Hi! Thanks for the video. Question around flight time. You said that using a 2800mah battery you actually doubled the flight time. How can it be done by adding +600mah comparing to the stock battery? It does not sound like a good measurement.
The 2800 has a higher C rating + we tweaked the naza software settings....
I'll try and find those settings and post them here for you. (I'm on a mac, so i need to get on a PC)
Demunseed Did you post the tweaked settings? Isn't this dangerous as it may ruin the battery?
I run my batteries down to under 20% capacity and they recharge fine....
Thanks
Hello, wonderful information. What do you recommend as a starter quad. I do fly helicopters. I do want to move up to the one you have until I feel comfortable flying a less expensive one. I do have a go pro and will do filming. Thank you,
buy the little Traxxus and learn to fly a 4 channel ($100)
Thank you, will do. Great videos,
good tips ,one question i noticed you were using the Gopro white edition camera what setting are working best for you in your video's. what setting to reduce fisheye look?
I've been using 720/60 - but if you want to omit your prop guards and landing gear from your shots, shoot in 1080p and 30.
Great Video! Was really interested in the zippy battery that you had, but I can't seem to find it online. Do you happen to have a link for it? Thanks.
hobbyking.com
The landing gear skids are now "New and improved" - lighter and easier to install AND look better.
Ive been flying quads and drones for about 3 years+
2) The sticks on a phantom "auto center" while the sticks on a 3DR drone do not.
3) No, the skids were engineered to stay out of your camera shot, except in HIGH WINDS where the A/C is pitching sideways.
4) Walkera has the worst QC of any of the manufacturers. Their stuff is pretty "junky" overall.
Stumbled across your videos today. Very informative thank you!
Thanks Jeff .... I've got 150 videos here for you to check out.... stay tuned for more.
nice tips video, lots of good sharing.. i am new to the phantom 2 but i would assume much applies to from this video to my phantom 2 unit..
do you feel prop guards take some flight time away from the battery?
If prop guards reduce flight time - its only seconds.
less than 20 seconds i would imagine...
Excellent video! Can you share the zippy 2800 battery details? seems like there are a couple of versions of this 2800mah batt
Buy the zippy 2800 30c 3 cell lipo.... great battery
Demunseed Do you have a HobbyKing discount code for this battery?
no i dont...
Thanks demunseed, what are your gains? Did you change them?
I had changed them, but changed them back to the default settings....
Hi i realy like your video's i have a phantom myself u explain everything very good thanks for that :)
just read the rest if the posts and you had answered that zippy question already with 3s 30c...do you also happen to have a solution for wobbling? after take off phantom wobbles and seems to have issues with power distribution to motors...not sure if they are supposed to run smooth with each Stick movement...mixer is Quad rotor x (as others had posted that as a potential issue)
My guess is that your props are out of balance - try changing one prop at a time to see if that solves your problem....
Great video Jim, looking to purchase a Phantom 2 going to order the extras as you have recommended. Good educational video, thank you.
yep . . order from www.acesdeals.biz
Thanks for the tips, I just ordered the props and guards, going to try them.
I am building a DJI f550 as well, do you have any thoughts on that?
Go for it - full fpv, osd and hot rod the hell out of it!
- i would NOT cut into the plastic - that would be insane.... ;-)
- there is literally NO lag time between the goggles and GoPro - you are viewing in REAL TIME - if there was lag time, you'd be crashing into walls!!!
- hope this helps
- jim
I never understood the point of painting your prop guards, easier orientation knowledge is a fantastic idea!
Very helpful and good advice. Thankyou. You have earned my subscription
why thank you - i was looking forward to "earning" your subscription.... ;-)
but if you fly in different places you have to callibrate it every time?
absolutely NOT!!!!! Only calibrate if you've traveled for more than 50-75Miles.
Oh ok thanks
Great suggestions for a newbee. Just taking my time to learn the Vision 2 + and a lot of info is relevant. Love the idea on the skids. Now just need to let the winds die down enough (Colorado) to get out there more.
Thanks Stu - Send me an email for the skids - jimbowers@foothill.net
Hey love your videos got a question for you I had the red and yellow come up on my phantom so I went through the compass dance and still I get the dreaded lights so I did the magnet thing too still same thing so we're do I go from here?
Recalibrate in the Naza assist software (IMU and compass calibration)
Great video thanks for all the info. Just picked up a phantom about a month ago and have been doing all kinds of mods to it thanks to you and a few other youtube videos. Love the skid idea too, might 3D print some for mine. One question I do have is in your experience what seems to be the max weight for the phantom? with fpv, brushless gimbal, gopro, bigger batteries I know its getting heavy but based on your experience what is too heavy?
In my opinion? Somewhere around 6 ounces is max....
Calibrate yer damn compass ya Foo!!! ;)
The last thing u want is a flyaway....
Demunseed and YES - you definitely want to plug your phantom into your PC and do your firmware upgrade and advanced calibration.... happy flying my friend.
Great information! Thank you. Do you sell a customized DJI Phantom?
+David Yager I do build custom drones for clients.... demunseed@gmail.com
Where can I order the skids for my landing gear they look good.
hey richard - send $26 (includes shipping in the US) via Paypal to jimbowers@foothill.net
Hey Richard, which Phantom do you have version 1.1 or Vision?
with the landing gear skids, will they show up when recording with the gopro?
the front end of the skids are shorter so they should not show up in your shot...
Demunseed Unless the wind is blowing very hard....
Also, what do you think if I paint the back prop guards flat black? instead of the front one bright yellow... or both?
sure - sounds like it would work - whatever offers you the best CONTRAST front to back.
Hey nice video..very helpful. But im wondering... you know that "Receiver Advanced Protection" on the software, should i have that on? do you recommend it?
Whatever the default is - i would leave it there. Ive never changed mine or activated it...
You could always go for a Mobius mini cam instead of all that gopro add on. Does everything gopro does and possibly more. It's lighter and MUCH cheaper. Great video with very useful tips. Thanks 👍
I had the moebius - good cam..... cracked the damn lens on a crash.... :-(
I just got a vision plus. How do I go about getting the extended skids?
Order from www.acesdeals.biz
can you please tell me where I can get the landing gear skids? I need them bad!!! I have a DJI Phantom 2 vision
(been there, dun that)
Demunseed OK, I will cut them off, Thanks.
happy and safe flying my friend! :-)
Love your channel, grab a steady cam (or pretty much any DSLR). thanks for sharing!
They get better... watch my newer videos...
Excellent Vid. Just picked up a Phantom FC40 today. only mod so far is go pro gimball :( ever do a dual battery set up for longer flight?
Dual batteries are a total waste of time....
i see you have about 100 spare batteries hahah. so i can see why you dont care for a dual set up. i spent most my funds just buying this copter. ill save n get a few batteries- blue label :) Thanks
Dual batteries is too heavy for quad...
Too heavy? You added every single mod possible and added weight, yes i understand the added weight doesnt amount to a whole battery. but at that point a spare battery would come in handy, no? isnt there a motor upgrade for the FC40? or can i just buy Phantom 2 motors if they are an upgrade?
The phantom will not recover fast enough, plus you'll only add maybe 2 minutes of flight time.
Pro video. I felt it would be from the start, and you didn't fail to deliver :)
Watched the whole video, good stuff!
Don't yet have a quad, looking to become familiar with my options. Definitely going to be doing lots of photography. QUESTION:
How many flights do you have with your DJI? I'm guessing a lot, is there any components that wear out?
I've got hundreds of hours on quadcopters...
the only thing that "wears" on your phan tom is the MOTORS... you might want to replace them once a year (or so) depending how often you fly.
Very instructive. Thanks for taking the time to make the video.
your welcome roger - glad you liked it
make sure to tighten your prop nuts.
very informative! thanks jim. i will spray my front guards tomorrow.
Excellent - Ive found that bright yellow or orange offer the best "contrast" and are easy to see in bright sun or "shadows" - Happy flying my friend!
I'm noticing that many owners get the GoPro camera instead of the standard Phantom II FPV camera. Any reason I should NOT get the factory FPV? What are the cost comparisons between the two choices? Thanks!
I have no idea what the costs are - but i do like the vision cam better then the gopro video
Thanks so much for the GREAT tips! I just paid for mine! $400 :)
How large are you props and how much flight time are you getting?
Vision Props - 9". You'll need to order the Vision prop guards to go with them. Theyll fit fine.
Demunseed OH and BTW - With the Vision props, I'm getting a solid 10-11 minutes of flight time (fully loaded with camera and OSD). The only downside of Vision props is that they are a little "brittle" so be careful with them, especially on hard landings....
Thanks for the info
yer quite welcome - Happy and SAFE flying
Jim which video shows installing shelf and leg extenders?
Will do thanks
Have you considered putting a GPS tracker on this in case it takes off and gets lost?
The Phantom2 Vision+ HAS a GPS tracker built into the iPhone app.... plus a TRACKER adds a lot of weight to your bird.
As long as you have "signal" it will mark its last location. But if you have a tracker that weighs only 1.5 ounces... go for it!
steve c That's cool. Send me a link.
Thanks for that input steve...
Demunseed A zippy 2800 is only good for "about" 50-75 flights..... then chuck em.
Hello,
Thnaks for the video.
Can you tell me where i can finde the landing skid ??
I can't find them online.
Thanks en regards
Hey ya Bert - Just shoot me an email to jimbowers@foothill.net. Just tell me which phantom version you have and we'll get them right off to you. ($26 shipped in the USA) ($32 shipped international)
Thanks for info, flew mine today for firstime, amazing
Now your hooked!!!! MuahHaaHaHaaaaaaaa
Great vid Jim
I'm looking at buying a phantom soon
Very helpful tips
Thanks
Thanks and Happy (and safe) Flying to ya!!
Yer welcome Mo... be safe out there and dont forget your prop guards!
would this idea work on phantom 3 stander ?
hi there, ı watched u vid and and i am really glad to find u vid.n share w us u great experience. if u dont mind may i ask, is it possible to use copter with rainy wheather. electronic device may effect?? (pls forgive my ignorence). Thanx alot !!
Hey Jim! =)
How do the self tightening props that are designed for the Phantom 1 compare to the vision 2 props?
Cheers,
Kaz
It's there same prop pitch - same performance
Can you recommend a Lipo charger for multiple batteries?
I highly recommend the Hi-Tec chargers. They make a charger that charges 4 batteries at once - all of your lipos, nicads etc.....
Demunseed, is there a wattage/amps difference when changing the props on a Phantom 1.1 from and 8in prop to a 9in prop? Will the it exceed the amps on the ESC?
No worries my friend. Just switch em and fly!!
You are a Pro. Great tips and video.I hope I'm gona enjoy my new Phantom like I think you do.
your going to LOVE it - just take your time
Modded by adding as much stuff as you can to it? lol I am looking to remove as much as I can from it. And rotor guards? Really?
Hi Jim should I reset my BTU on my dji phantom 2 vision plus whenever I do a IMU calibration in the assistant software ?
+Othniel Hibbert No need to....
Great guide man, really like it, what do you think about the zippy 3600 from hobbyking, it will work to with this Phantom??
Wow - this is the first I've heard of this Lipo.... I checked the size comparison to the zippy 2800 and it LOOKS like its too big to fit in a Phantom. Let me know if you find out otherwise k? (Thanks for the heads up)
Tips #4 landing upgrade
Where can I get them?
send an email request for "skids" to jimbowers@foothill.net
I am wondering if you could tell me... is the cam on the Vision better than a Go Pro?
Ive seen both and I like the video from the vision better thanb the goproi... brighter and more saturation.
and if yes whats a good setting?
Hi Jim, just rewatching this because I want to get a Zippy 2800 but just wondering if you could specify exactly which model it is as HobbyKing have 3 different kinds: 1 4S1P, a 6S1P and a 3S1P. Which one are you using in this video (I can't read what's on the closeup of the battery)? Or which type do you recommend? Thank you :)
Anna Ferguson 3S
Thank you kindly! :)
Great video, very informative and makes perfect sense. Keep it up!
Thanks Ryan - Happy and Safe Flying to you... Keep yer props on the Top!!!
Hello, Can you help! I have phantom 1 just sit there with 2 blink green, I tried to connect to naza m to do imu calibration but the software and the drone can’t connect talk to each other, please tell me what to do.
