    I used to do the big clean amp and pedals thing for years.. Now I gig a 22 watt fender with 2 channels and push it with clean boosts/klones.. The amp is doing most of the work now and Im happier than before.

      Nice! It's a funny thing; I've no doubt my tastes will change with age but at the moment, I'm really digging the high-headroom thing although it is undoubtedly harder work than a smaller amp that's compressing naturally and, as you say, doing most of the work. The V140 and the Fuchs Clean Machine are so unforgiving! It definitely makes you think about twice about pedal choice and what you're playing.

    Ever since the painful death of Rock and Roll, all stages are getting quieter. I use either a Fender Bassbreaker 15 or a Fender Blues Junior, both only 15 watts, and not a gig goes by when I'm asked, usually impolitely, to turn it down.

    I wasted a few decades of my life trying to live with the god-awful result of good advice from real professional musicians who prudently advised me that fifteen Watts was absolutely everything that I would ever want.
    I scarcely know where to start with such wisdom, people. Choices. You get a choice, a chance, a moment, and then you are gone.
    Life is short, think about that many times, every day that you are still here.
    That said, today I ordered a four EL-34, fifty Watt amplifier from PRS, Which I hope doesn't perform so poorly that it hurts to switch it on. The different Hundred Watt units here already are hitting close to the mark, but still left more room for improvement.

    I shall be very interested to see how you get on with the wet/dry rig. Like many other folk, I’ve followed Mick & Dan down that particular rabbit hole but - good news - there is gold at the bottom! I’m using a Victory V40 (running into a Zilla 1x12 cab loaded with a G12H-75 Creamback) as my wet amp and an Orange Rocker 15 for the dry channel. There’s not enough headroom in the Rocker for gigging, but since I’m playing and recording at home and since it does play nicely with pedals at relatively low volumes, this way round works just fine for me! The combined sound is much bigger and richer than either amp on its own. And peaking at 104-106 dB, it’s plenty visceral enough for home use! Hope you’re going to be taking at least one of your Victory amps on tour this summer - we’ve got tickets for the closer in Newcastle and are really looking forward to seeing you and the band play live!

    I know this is an older video, but I'm looking into Victory amps at the moment. Interesting seeing you play it at home (seemingly with no attenuation). If you were only playing at home and club type gigs, do you think the V40 sounds as rich as the V140? I would use the amp for lush cleans and add pedals like you are but would likely never be able to really push an amp that big. Also, how does the reduced power setting of the V140 compare to the V40 if wanting to dial things back a bit? Thanks!!

  • @jasong546
    @jasong546 5 років тому +1

    Chris, I don’t understand (because I am not a gigging/professional guitarist) how the sound person at a venue became the boss? I always kind of thought that the band members should tell sound person how it’s gonna be! It’s interesting that in a lot of cases where fans like me look at the amps on stage, the bigger ones, and say “damn that’s awesome, I love the way that sounds!”. So we love that stuff, and it was the sound and feeling of rock n roll, but the sound guy is saying don’t use the equipment or the settings that everyone in the audience wants to hear! You should just tell them, this is how I make my music, so freakin deal with it dude! You’re outnumbered, lol! Best of luck on your upcoming tour dates! Be sure to post a couple of live tracks on UA-cam for those of us thousands of miles away!

      Jason Guion Been gigging for a few years and still wonders about the same... A band can get away without a sound guy but a sound guy cannot get away without someone on stage making noise... so how they rose to power is beyond me. Also, being a small time musician we use sound guys can n our own league, still they get better pay but do the least work.
      That said, it may be smart to listen to what the sound guy tell you because he/she is the one getting to hear what the audience hear. If he/she has half an idea of what they are doing at least. Not a good idea to pay someone that knows sound and then tell that person how to do his/her job. What you on stage hear is quite a different matter and basically to your own taste to perform as best you can (more this, more that, more me in monitors).

    • @jasong546
      @jasong546 5 років тому

      Jk I am not sure I understand what you mean by sound guy n our own league, but I understand the rest. I got asked on “stage” 2 times. One in a makeshift bar in my Air Force dorm in CA but I don’t think there was no sound guy, and once for a song in a blues club in Indianapolis. I know the second time there was a sound person of some kind, but I don’t remember what happened up there. The people who asked me up told me I did fine, just playing little bits during the song, but I was very drunk, having had so much Guinness. I don’t know what I played, more important here is that I don’t remember what it sounded like on the stage. I mostly remember that he hugged me at the end of the song, and people were nice after. I think maybe I played so little that I couldn’t make any really bad errors. In the dorm bar, I think maybe no one could hear me. I would love to be a sound guy for awhile and learn how that’s done. But I still don’t see why the band members don’t walk out into the venue before and listen to the stage sound, and then tell the guy what they want him/her to do! It bugs me because I have been to shows and can’t imagine the band liked the way I was hearing out in the crowd. But hey, I guess that’s a big reason I am not a big touring pro lol!

    • @JksGuitarCave
      @JksGuitarCave 5 років тому

      Jason Guion “Sound guys in our own league” means sound guys that get their gigs at the same venues we do really. We never used the sound guys that was a working professional, but the local guys with a keen ear for sound and a semi-pro PA system and basically do it as a hobby.
      Been there done that btw. Was to drunk to understand how to play the guitar so I turned down the volume and just pretended 🤫
      To walk out in the venue require a wireless system so you can play while listening... and I assure you, we did. However, we tend to stay mostly on stage during the gig and if we walk among the crowd it’s to rock with the audience, not to tell the sound guy what to do. Also, even if you set the sound right in an empty venue, the sound will be different when it’s packed with people.

    • @jasong546
      @jasong546 5 років тому

      Jk ah I see about the sound guys league. I meant to go out before, during a sound check maybe, I thought they did that. I could swear I saw artists playing big places say they were asked to turn down, but it is just the way it goes, right? I just want to be sure that if I ever get to see chris I can hear it just fine! Of course I will have to fly across the pond. Not happening soon. Take care good luck with your music!

    @chrisbuckguitar I am very interested in this Super Duchess amp - wanting to have both the luscious pure clean tones demonstrated here, plus I want to be able to switch to "edge of breakup" tones that are great for layering on an overdrive, as described here:
    ua-cam.com/video/7Ny7fRzVFMQ/v-deo.html
    ...but is there a way to toggle between those two? For example, could a volume boost pedal between the OD and the guitar input... would that get some of those edge of breakup tones, (for the OD to use)? (And then I can scale back the volume as needed via the effects loop, as needed). Is this achievable? Or is a volume boost ahead of the guitar input (after an OD pedal) NOT a good substitute for turning up the volume knob? (For this goal I mentioned.)

    Just tried what i thought would be the ultimate pedal platform amp. "Two-Rock" CRS 100 . Though very impressive, just way too Fender Black face for me. I need a blend of british clean in there too. Maybe this is the amp I am looking for. I play Lots of Country, Classic Rock, Blues and various abstract phycadelic kaka ... with a Gigrig pedal board set up

    • @keithremedy

      Did you try any of the different gain structures? They change the way it feels alot.. The CRS is very versatile & i can easily pull Marshall sounding compression out of it on the schofield input.. Honestly if you think the CRS is too fender your going to think the victory is even more blackface.. The CRs is like a dumble super hybrid while the victory is like a fender twin

    How do you set your amp to get the strat to sound so mellow and warm? Did you change amp settings before you played the yamaha? The Strat normally beeing a fairly bright sounding guitar i imagine a humbucker guitar put through the same amp setting would lack treble and be very dull/muffled. I always wonder how people (e.g. John Mayer) get a strat to sound so warm an rich... Great playing and overall vibe by the way!
