  • OpsBuddy is a free switchlist building tool designed specifically for smaller model railroads and shelf-style layouts where fewer industries and less traffic is the norm. You can access OpsBuddy here: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/... (NOTE: To save a copy of OpsBuddy, click on the "Use Template" button in the upper right. A Gmail account is required to edit and save the document.)
Feel free to adjust it and make changes to meet your own operational requirements.
OpsBuddy was inspired by the free switchlist template by Bill Neale. His original Excel document can be found here: www.trains.com/mrr/how-to/mod...
If you are interested in a shorter video that gets right into building a switchlist, I've added one here: • Building a Switchlist ...

A couple people have reported issues saving the document. I've updated the link in the description to address this. To save a copy of OpsBuddy, click on the "Use Template" button in the upper right when previewing the document. A Gmail account is required to edit and save the document.

Hi I have just come across your video and this looks like a good tool for my small UK based layout . I will customise it for my use but I think this is what I have been looking for to add interest to my running of trains.
    Cheers Kev

Thanks! I appreciate it. Yeah, I couldn’t find a way to do this with the existing software so I had to make my own. 😊

This is EXACTLY what I have been looking for---just couldn't figure out how to execute it. Thank you so much for this. I have already edited the OpsBuddy for my TOMA Layout---which I'm currently building.

Three boxcars! Wow! 😁😁😁😁😁 Good ideas about using role-playing dice. Variety is the spice of life, especially when it comes to model railroading. I'll keep watching!

Hi from the UK, I found you via the Around the Layout podcast. I will definitely be giving OpsBuddy a try as it sounds exactly right for the layout I'm building here in the UK. Also been listening to your 'Ramblings' whilst working on the layout. A real fun listen. Thanks Lee

looks interesting! I will certainly give it a try on my next layout . I've used the Mac 'Switchlist' for my small layouts .. and even for a larger modular set up (see a couple of videos on my channel).. I 'found' your channel via the Around the Layout podcast.. a lot of what you said resonated with me (I'm a long way from the prototype !) Layout looks great and I love the plan/setting.. Subbed 🙂

Currently, I hand-write my switchlist, which is not very random, so I think this will work nicely for my Mondovi Line layout, with some modification. I currently have two towns on the layout with distinct industries in each (Eventually there will be 4 towns). And I have a 6-track staging yard. I would create a switchlist not by industry, but by industry within a town. I think it's doable. I would have to figure out how to handle the fact that every train is required to have an LCL boxcar and caboose at the end of the train which get dropped at the house track for unloading and restocking while the rest of the town is switched out. So the LCL boxcar is inbound at first, then outbound. Maybe just add it to the instructions. Either way, I like the challenge.

I think adding it to the instructions is the way to go there. Thanks for the comment!

Is this an on-line only form or can it be saved to my computer. I don't have a "my drive". Tried saving to "computer" but says I don't have any synced computers.

You'll need a google account and then you can save the template and adjust it from there. I'll make a video tonight showing how to do that step specifically.
