As someone who has spent a significant portion of my academic life exploring karstic and volcanic caves, this will be the unicorn wand of scientific cave mapping and modeling.
@@IndianaDrones I am more than prepared. I just sent you an email with some pictures. What do you think about an online meeting on this if it's okay with you?
Could you talk more about collecting data in caves? 1) For large extensions of caves, is it necessary to return to the same exit location? Some scanner models, when used in SLAM, need to do a looping, limiting the execution time and generating several files that you need to join later, causing an error. This is the case with GeoSlam. 2) How is the cloud merging done since in the cave you don't use gnss?
I would be interested to know how well you achieved "level" throughout the cave, without closing out to the other side of cave/stormwater pipe to confirm orientation and level was achieved. Have you run any tests on the handheld SLAM setup for how well it maintains an accurate understanding of level while not looping back on itself and "closing"? Do you have any ability to have influence on the handheld SLAM point cloud when no control points are acquired? Or is it a simple upload to the cloud, press process, and you receive a finalised pointcloud to download? Loved the video mate.
hello from Europe (Bulgaria) my name is Boyan and I am planning to start a drone business but when I was watching you I realize that you are at a much higher level than me so I will continue to watch you and try to learn from your professional great work, thank you for all this valuable information
It's a great system. I have a question. 5:20~A round tube will appear. In the video, the length is measured only a little, but can it be measured longer?
It would have been interesting to see if the culvert opening that daylighted at the back of the cave lined up with the drone flight. I did a lidar scan of a 3/4 mile tunnel, after stitching all the scans together it was off by 10ft, just from micro shifts each scan.
I’ve been scanning and create oilfield sites for a couple years now. One thing I’ve always wanted to include were scans of pipelines and the wells all the way to the bottom. I wonder if your scanner could work for that?
@@danieljwindham we have well about 8” casing and yes to the bottom. I thought the drilling rig or wireline crew could lower the scanner down hole pre perforation phase and map out the well. As for horizontal or multidirectional wells some extra tech would be needed but I’m sure somebody has to be doing it. I would wonder about the scanner going under water if it would still work. I’m trying to create a digital universe for the oil company with all there assets. The wells and pipelines as well all on a map where everything is located. It’s neat.
That's awesome!! Documenting your travels would be great to see, so many cool places in the world. Didn't you fly a jungle with ruins beneath? Can you share those or are they proprietary? Keep posting, great to see, I'm moving in that direction with your Lidar products for mapping, not sure which trajectory I'm taking yet... 😀
You should fly a site and then have a stick that you could lower the unit into manholes to get inverts and pipe systems. Maybe not “cool” and “flashy” but very typical of what a surveyor would need to accomplish. Then link it together so you could supply an engineer with a complete view of a site for design
@@IndianaDrones a driveable robot drone with a 1/2 power, scaled down version of that lidar system would be perfect. Plus you could probably slip it thru the grates. Just make sure to have a safety rope if it comes across a drop!

Hi, Great Work and awesome video! with this equipment set, is it possible to get the whole cave and drainage pipe scanned only by the drone? Just wondering the capability of this set able to scan non accessible cave.
Here's a really easy idea that nobody thought of.. Fly some moderately sized bit of interesting heavy canopied terrain, then go walk all over the place under the canopy. I'd sign up to watch that!

Would be interested to see a forest understory and above canopy comparison, to measure forest health over time. Can't wait to see some of your products here in New Zealand!
Awesome video! I own a cave in the Missouri Ozarks and have had it mapped using traditional methods. I would love something like this scan of the interior of the cave as well as the ability to view it as compared to the surface area. Is there anyone in the state of Missouri or nearby that would have the ability to do this? It would make a great video. The cave is called Lewis Cave and has a page managed by Missouri Cave and Karts if you were ever interesed.
Funny you should ask, as I was just thinking how someone should fly into the grand canyon and find out what it is exactly that we the indigenous people are not supposed to see down there.
