I’m happy that more people seem to be praising modern SpongeBob more! While I’ll admit I’m not that big on seasons 12 and 13 but I can’t deny that the people that work on SpongeBob really care about what they’re doing and try to give a new generation of kids a happy show!
Same here, I always dug post-movie Spongebob and while there's a few bad episodes here are there, there's no outright awful whole seasons IMO.

13:02 Actually, that's Bubble Bass. He was introduced in Season 1 in the episode, Pickles. But I guess he was such a popular character, they kept bringing him back in the later seasons.
This episode is good but "Graveyard Shift" is still my favorite.

Seasons after the Sequel Movie are actual pretty good for the most part TBH (Season 9b - Onward to be specific, considering Hillenberg returned to the series after the Sequel)

It helps that this episode 1. came out after the reform created by the second movie and hillenburg returning to the show 2. was a special episode intended to be scary unlike a lot of older episodes that clashed with the regular tone of spongebob despite being “normal” episodes

Honestly, this was one of the better Zombie parody episodes I've seen in my 23 years of life, and the season was definitely one of the weirdest seasons of any show as well, for better or worse (mostly for better.)
I do like the concept as to HOW these zombies multiply. True, we've seen zombies made from eating something like a soda or a drug, but never a self-regenerating zombie that procreate by feeding itself to its victim. It matches well with the Burger half of the Burger Zombie, and is a creative spin in the Zombie half.
It even plays on that with some funny jokes here and there. Like when Plankton transforms and says "Have a slider." That's actually a pretty clever joke for a show that's had some serious stinker seasons.
I even like the idea that you have to make them puke out the patty in order to cure them. That is pretty clever, but I also leads to some pretty funny logical conclusions. Like, would they be cured if it passed through their systems?
Or a David Cronenberg movie homage. 🙂🙂
The other zombie episode in this show that REALLY terrified me as a little kid was the one with Mad Snail Disease.

@@stitchlover4381Fuck, I remember that one. That scared me to death as a kid, especially that transformation scene. It just left me feeling gross, queasy, and generally disturbed.
It would be incredible if Doug did a review of seasons 1-3 of SpongeBob, I think he would enjoy it. I think what makes Spongebob so timeless is that the show doesn't have any topical/dated humour, and just sticks to jokes/plots that are quite clever and memorable.
Yeah I would love to see that. I'm a diehard Spongebob fan since I was 7 years old. While the first three seasons are classic, I have a soft spot for Seasons 4 and 5, but the show went downhill during Season 6.
Yea and those seasons had their dark episodes. Still remember one where spongebob and krabs thought they killed a guy and tried to burry him unknowingly that he was still alive but unconscious which means they nearly did killed him for real

There’s a really great Halloween episode of SpongeBob where he dresses up as a ghost, and he saves his head to try to give him a more rounded shape, the reveal is great.

I'd love to suggest the joy from The Amazing World of Gumball. Just like this episode of Spongebob, it puts a twist on the classic zombie apocalypse.
To add onto this suggestion, "The Puppets" is a fantastically unsettling episode directed by the creators of Don't Hug Me I'm Scared, so you know what you're in for going into it.

You know, ‘My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic’ also had a zombie episode called ‘28 Pranks Later.’ That definitely qualifies as a Dark Toon, and I’d love to see a review of it! There were also a couple of Halloween episodes, a take on ‘A Christmas Carol,’ and one where Fluttershy turns into a vampire fruit bat. All of those would qualify, and I’d love to see them. The original iteration of ‘My Little Pony’ also had a monster called The Schmooze, which was kinda like ‘The Blob.’ That would make for another great episode.
The one I think is the darkest is the season 5 premiere, The Cutie Map. Strider actually talked about it on one of his lists. Don't join cults, kids! XD
Then there's Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep, which is dark in a more subtle way. When MLP FiM went dark, it went pretty dark.
I think the creepiest part is that they don't want to eat your flesh, the patty zombies want you to eat theirs.
Reminds me of how the zombies from "Scooby Doo on Zombie Island" with how they didn't want to eat the gang but how they are used to scare them off the island, as a warning.

Bubble Bass should've turned into a double triple bossy deluxe on a raft, 4x4 animal-style, extra shingles with a shimmy and and a squeeze, light axle grease, make it cry, burn it and let it swim when he got infected.
Ben 10 “last laugh” and “ghostfreaked out” would be great darktoons

You and Phantom Strider should do a crossover nostalgia critic review
I love the idea of Dark Toons episodes where you collaborate with other content creators who have more experience with particular shows. You should do a Dark Toons of one of the darker episodes of Ben 10 (Last Laugh, Ghostfreaked Out, Nor Iron Bars or Cage etc.) with resident Ben 10 expert, Kuro The Artist of The Ink Tank!

@@Hat_Man494 Shame about that too. Alien Force has a lot of good episodes that could've made the cut regarding Dark Toons. The spookiest is arguably the one that introduced Michael Morningstar, or Darkstar. The dude leeches the lifeforce of his victims to fuel his powers (The closest we'll get to an Incubus in a kid's show.) and fixates over to Gwen when Team Tennyson are recruiting new members to join their rebellion against the DNAliens. The visuals are quite terrifying too, with the absorbed girls taking on zombie-like dishevelled apperances with greyed flesh, red eyes and skeletal cheekbones. The episode ends on a high note, with Gwen coming to her senses and using her own powers to counter Michael's and the absorbed girls he'd been seducing turning on him as well.
All the same, the episode has a very uncomfortable aura surrounding it, and I'm surprised that they were able to get away with making it given the obvious implications that could come with its premise. Definitely not an episode that would be made today.
The thing I like about the older seasons is that it was much more mature and surreality was more controlled. Personally, I think the newer seasons are too ambitious for their own good. Despite being simple, the older episodes you could never forget.
My two favorite critics talking about a dark episode of one of my all time favorite shows? Count me in!
I'm happy to see Strider talking about animation again. It feels like it's been a long time.
Interesting thing about Bubble Bass (the one PhantomStrider describes as the critic character) is that he's actually _not_ a new character. He was introduced in the very first season as the guy who hid Spongebob's pickles to discredit him. They brought him back in the more recent seasons after years of absence to be Spongebob's rival, in a way.
It's actually kinda funny that Strider wasn't looking at the camera during the commentary.
I'd like to imagine he's just looking at the wall the entire time

After Doug joining a few of Striders videos over the years Striders finally in Doug's series
Bubble Bass was in a really early episode where he orders a really complicated burger and it becomes a big deal that SpongeBob “forgets” to put pickles on it. There was a long time where he didn’t appear much but he made something of a comeback in the last handful of years.
As well as the “F.U.N” ep when he sat on Plankton in the movie theater.(actually the first time we saw him with spongebob calling him by name)
I do enjoy the fact that he becomes that very burger, no less.
You should do one on Captain Planet "Mind Pollution". That's one of the great, we can get away with this because we have a "good message" dark cartoon episodes.

A couple modern SpongeBob episodes that I definitely think you should look at for Dark Toons are Plankton Paranoia from Season 11 and Kwarantined Krab from Season 12. Both of which I think you'd enjoy very much!

LOL! I've never seen this Spongebob episode before. It looks CREEPY, HILARIOUS, and SURPRISINGLY FUN. I definitely think that the message of the episode is, "Don't fix what isn't broken." And shout out to PhantomStrider. I hope that you two do more collaborations again sometime in the future.

As a kid, I had a morbid fear of zombie episodes of my favourite tv shows... hell, just zombies in general. I guess this episode would give me the heebie-jeebies as well if I saw it as a kid. Now that I'm 22, I'm more curious than scared to watch it.

Great job, you two! 👏👏👏 I definitely enjoy this SpongeBob episode as a horror fan. Hope you guys can do a Dark Toons episode on some episodes for shows like The Loud House, Amphibia, The Owl House, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Teen Titans, and Danny Phantom someday in the future.
BTW, I do agree that although SpongeBob is a great cartoon TV series from Nickelodeon, it does have its bumps here and there, especially with episodes like Stuck in the Wringer, A Pal for Gary, The Great Snail Race, One Coarse Meal, Gone, Clash of Triton, Little Yellow Book, and I'm With Stupid.
Episodes like this make me appreciate modern SpongeBob for allowing the storyboard artist and animators to go crazier and even more creative with the expressions and ideas
It’s awesome that Doug did checkout some more SpongeBob. I think the next dark cartoon he should check out is any Scooby Doo cartoon like Scooby Doo: Mystery Incorperated or the 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo.

Still some great episodes from MLP: Friendship is Magic that you're sleeping on. The Scare Master, Luna Eclipsed, 28 Pranks Later, Bats, the list is surprisingly long.
This reminds me of the Parks & Rec episode where Ron won a burger contest against a fancy hard to cook veggie burger with his simple meat and bun burger. It’s nice to give options to vegetarians and no matter how fancy food is, it could never compete with standard simple meals.
Nice to see PhantomStrider is doing a Dark Toons video with Doug. I have been loving how he's been talking about other topics like food and restaurants. I haven't seen this episode yet but it looks really interesting.

Always enjoy these NC. I got a few worth looking at since you haven't had an Ed Edd and Eddy episode yet. Honor Thy Ed sees the crew go into a spooky house that ends with a force marriage, The Day the Ed Stood Still sees one of the characters take on the role of a Xenomorph and take all the kids in the cul-de-sac hostage, and Eeny Meeny Miney Ed was my first intro as an 8 year old to Kafka's Metamorphosis.

I think it's funny that you mentioned the idea that the patty looks like jelly, because it made me think of the Spongebob Krabby Patty gummies.
The reason why it looks more like Ren and Stimpy now is because people that originally directed and storyboarded on Ren and Stimpy are running the show.

I highly recommend “The Super Powers Team: Galactic Guardians: Episode 4: The Fear.” Airing in early October 1985 and written by Alan Burnett (DCAU, anyone?), this episode has the Scarecrow discovering that Batman (voiced by the late great Adam West) is afraid of a certain place called Crime Alley. This episode shows Batman in a way not yet seen at the time: truly vulnerable. It also features the first ever onscreen depiction of Batman’s origins, from his parents to Joe Chill. This is considered the darkest and most controversial Super Friends episode ever. There’s creative backgrounds and good use of lightning, rain, shadows, lighting, and sound design. I cannot recommend it enough.

I actually learned about Channel Awesome through Phantomstrider. They did a collab together years ago and I've been a subscriber since.
Another great Dark Toons episode. I haven't heard of this episode until now, but it's definatly that I'll check out when I can. I think I'll always have a soft spot for Spongebob, he was one of the few tv shows I would watch the most back in the day. Still love the original 2007 movie, maybe we could get a nostalgia critic episode on that one day. It's honestly a great movie imo. Nice to know that even if Spongebob might not be at his peak, the animation for his most recent seasons is phenominal. I always see a clip from a newer spongebob epsidoe pop up in my Twitter feed every now & then, and the animation always looks colorful, expressive, and just really good. Might not be as stylized as the earlier seasons, but it's still really impressive.
Another great episode, and of course if there was an epsiode from a cartoon that I will always recommend for this, is Jack and the Haunted House from Samurai Jack. It's a great spooky episode from an already amazing show, that tells a very good horror story, and it was made for kids back in the day.
As for a show I could recommend. I guess The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy. A show about two kids who won a bet with the Grim Reaper, and won, and now force him to be their best friend forever. What's not to love?
He should watch the season 1 episode, “Tastes Like Chicken”. It got cannibalism as the focus with a wild chase scene in the climax.

I’m someone who LOVED Spongebob as a kid, must have watched every single episode from seasons 1-3 at least 20 times each, but stopped watching near the end of season 4 when it was noticeably dropping in quality. From this point of view, I find it interesting to see a fresh perspective on a later season episode that I had never seen.

It's a 28 Days Later parody. In MY LITTLE PONY! It's not as grotesque or well known as others you've reviewed, but that dichotomy alone absolutely worth a look!

Strider shouldnt regret about not looking camera more. It seems he is actually interested in discussion between him and critic and beacuse he looked certain ways at camera, it actually gives it a bit more meaning too
I love SpongeBob even to this day. But I think the reason why I like the older seasons more is because the expressions, they aren’t over exaggerated like it’s been constantly shown.
there was a tv show that i watched when i would young called crashbox. it's not dark in a traditional scary sense, but it's so bizarre and kinda freaky looking at times. there are a few characters that genuinely scared me growing up.
Yeah I honestly want to see this episode and hopefully I can convince my wife to watch it. My wife actually is the one who convinced me to watch SpongeBob in the first place as I skipped over that show when it was new, but it might be cool for both of us to watch this more recent one
Really nice work and having Phantom Strider with you to go over the episode. For the next thing to watch, go for 'There's Good Boos To-Night' a Casper cartoon with a dark ending. If you haven't seen it, go for it.
