I definitely agree on using the tender pickups to help the electrical footprint of the locomotive, I retrofitted some extra pickups to the tender of my postwar 1615 and it has had no cutouts, even when traveling cruelly slow over o27 turnouts and crossovers.
I have the UP lionchief A5 neat to see all the added details on the legacy model. I guess the delay was due to them adding a bunch of those details. Great video as always thanks for sharing Eric!
Nice! That is a cool, little locomotive. The crew talk is not too bad, really and I like the engine sounds. As usual, the first whistle and bell are the most prototypical. Yard engines didn't need the deep, throaty whistle. I did like the second one, though, it has a great sound. The air raid whistle is kind of neat. A gimmick that works nicely. Team it up with the Army Triplex and it would be a cool air raid whistle battle. Either way, it is a neat locomotive and the price isn't too bad. An excellent video, as always.
this was my first legacy locomotive. I discovered the air raid siren by complete accident and by the time I realized what it was my Dog had heard it from the other room and started howling along lmao
This is a really cool and very nice ARMY switcher brother. When you did the roll by with the lights out, I thought I was seeing sparks under the locomotive and passenger car's, but it was the light from the one building there by the tracks. That would suck if that would happen with a brand new locomotive.
The exclamation of the tether was excellent I never thought of it that way So that’s why I try to watch for your reviews And typically, I always say if Eric would buy it then so will I if I can afford it Thanks for your honest opinion
Thanks for the informative video Eric. I am not 100% sure but I believe this switcher may have started life as an MTH Premier engine. Having grown up in the 1950's during the Cold War when air raid sirens were tested weekly often times with no advanced warning the air raid siren whistle option is interesting. That being said I much prefer whistle no. 1. Thanks again and Happy Holidays to you and Lisa.
The universe is weird, I just got the K-line version of this for Pennsylvania rail road with tmcc. Nearly a week later, this video pops up about it. cool little thing isn't it?
Nice engine. Improvements would be in the cab. The figures are too small and it would nice to have a fireman poised as bailing coal into the firebox and having injector sounds with the coal shoveling.
I really need to get my hands on one of these little guys. Started with the K-Line w/TMCC one, got my hands on the LC+ one just before lockdown 5 years ago, and have absolutely enjoyed a versatile 0-4-0. [Profile picture] Might just have to get the Legacy one for the retooled details, let alone valve gear, and switcher gearing.
Im gonna beat everyone to the punch and say that the siren you're hearing is likely a Federal Sign & Signal/Federal Signal Model 7a. It could also be a Model 5a, but i doubt it, as the windup sounds too quick to be a 5.
A question, Eric. The coal (or wood) is burning and the smoke channels forward to heat the tubes in the boiler, and then be expelled through the chimney. But when the engine begins to move, the smoke starts to come out in puffs in time to the piston strokes. So, what causes that smoke puffing? BTW that siren sounds cool! Whistle 2 -- bell 4.
The puffing is exhausted steam from the cylinders that is expelled through the smokestack. As the cylinders move back and forth, the steam puffs out the top.
If I were to purchase One this would be the One. But in a Sad way for the State of our Hobby, when Lionel has put a Price Tag of $700 on an 0-4-0 then that's not a Good Sign. I witnessed and was part of the Sportscard Hobby for many Decades. I seen them do the Same thing. A Card is no more than a piece of Cardboard. A Lionel Train is no more than a Toy. And both are too expensive for Kids now. When items are Targeted at Adults Only then many will eventually pull out of the Hobby or Stop purchasing New Items and just Stick with what they already have. That's pretty much what I have done. I won't buy Sportscards anymore and I won't be buying anymore Lionel Trains. I'll still stay with MTH as their Prices are way Cheaper.
Saw you at train show ,no offense I think your a nice person but uhm it is a bit arrogant to tell out in a train show “SHOULD I BUY THE LIONEL TRIPLEX also terrible taste if you bought it Halloween one thing for Christmas another for Halloween but we all have our own tastes but like wear a hat next time your at york
Bro I LOVE 0-4-0s and small engines, they’re just so cuteeee
:3
Yup Eric you are correct - the air raid siren is worth the whole adventure on this engine; it also looks great!
The air raid siren is a Federal Signal “Model 5” or “Model 7”….im a train and siren guy! More than likely a 7 due to the quick wind up
Adorable switcher!
# 1 sounds great but like air raid siren! You've been my mentor for the past 3 years in this hobby. Thanks for your videos and guidance.
This Locomotive is Amazing Eric, Whistle and bell sound # 1 is my favorite, also the air raid Siren sound is Cool., great Review.👍🏽❤️
Surprisingly I like how the us army green looks on the a5
Bell 1 + that siren screams BREAK DOWN ENGINE COMING THROUGH!!!!!!!!!!
Like that #4 whistle too!
Nice, one of the best trains you’ve presented.
2 and 5 are my favorite whistles and bell 1 was my favorite
I definitely agree on using the tender pickups to help the electrical footprint of the locomotive, I retrofitted some extra pickups to the tender of my postwar 1615 and it has had no cutouts, even when traveling cruelly slow over o27 turnouts and crossovers.
Whistle 2, is my favourite I love these little small engines. I love the slope back tender too.
I've seen the a5 at the RR of PA, cute little things, but still pretty hefty. I like what lionel has done with this model
Small and mighty. Lionel did a nice job
I have the UP lionchief A5 neat to see all the added details on the legacy model. I guess the delay was due to them adding a bunch of those details. Great video as always thanks for sharing Eric!
Sweet little loco.

Awesome thanks..
I like bell #2
Awesome switcher steam engine Eric!!!
I ordered the Pennsylvania one and I absolutely love it.
Great review as always Eric.

HA

whistle # 5, great video Eric thanks.
Nice little Switcher, best wishes and warmest regards for a happy holidays this season Eric!!🎄🎄💙
Veteran approved! Go Army!
Whistle #1, bell #1 and best feature is pulling power!
The exclamation of the tether was excellent I never thought of it that way
So that’s why I try to watch for your reviews
And typically, I always say if Eric would buy it then so will I if I can afford it
Thanks for your honest opinion
I love these little engines. I wish someone would release it in HO scale
Now let's see if Lionel will offer the DDA40X with the Thunderbolt horn.
Bought one based off your review. Thanks for showing a great engine
nice video Eric. I can tell you put a lot of work in it.

Just gotta say thank you for showing me my next engine. After watching this video I immediately bought one.
5th one for sure love the air raid whistle but otherwise 1 is great too and the bell I'll take first 1
I love how whistle 4 is Lionel polar express whistle
The universe is weird, I just got the K-line version of this for Pennsylvania rail road with tmcc. Nearly a week later, this video pops up about it. cool little thing isn't it?
AIR RAID WHISTLE FOR SURE---we're under a drone attack😅😮😅
Whistle 2 with Bell 5 is best combo in my opinion. Awesome engine. Certainly on my list now

Whistle #1 , bell #2
Nice little beauty
Whistle 2
If something is done right, then it is NOT done by the Army.🤣
I like whistle #2
You know Eric, your Vedic’s are amazing, I’m saving up money for a Lionel legacy mogul. It will take a while, but I’ll get it soon.
Whistle 4 sounds like Milwaukee Road 261’s Santa Fe 6 chime.
Im gonna beat everyone to the punch and say that the siren you're hearing is likely a Federal Sign & Signal/Federal Signal Model 7a. It could also be a Model 5a, but i doubt it, as the windup sounds too quick to be a 5.
Hey are you the guy who did the train yard videos? Our son likes your videos
@Puddin_Pi hey thanks! Tell him I said hi 👋
I sure will, friend!
Amazing 🚂🚋🚃🚋🚃🚋
Whistle Number 2
I need that switcher for my army
A question, Eric.

whistle 3 is very cool
2,3, and,4 were my favorite. The air raid siren just hurt my ears
I have cochlear implants n had my bluetooth from my implants synced to my phone n at the volume i had it, just bout gave me a headache! lol
Whistle 2 and bell 1 for a thousand Alex.
Yay new video
Cool
I'd be curious to know how much of the tooling on this model is derived from the old K-Line A5, and how much is new.
Either bell 2 or 5
#5,2 then 1 whistle 4
4 then 1 bell
Hey Eric I think that engine is perfect for a camera engine right Eric?
As cool as the siren is I still go with whistle 1 and bell 1
What's the gauge? OO? G?
Look just like Casey jr
Can I trade some track and some ho rolling stock for a cheap o scale locomotive
the absolute state of lionel 😒
wow folks really accept getting ripped off.SMH
ok
How to tell us you are never getting a new locomotive without telling us how limited your budget is
im sry

Lionel Lion Chief is targeting children and people with limited funds. Similar to Rail King.
Saw you at York wear a nice hat to hide yourself lol
Saw you at train show ,no offense I think your a nice person but uhm it is a bit arrogant to tell out in a train show “SHOULD I BUY THE LIONEL TRIPLEX also terrible taste if you bought it Halloween one thing for Christmas another for Halloween but we all have our own tastes but like wear a hat next time your at york
