    I love hearing others perspective on different pressings. I have not heard the first MoFi pressing, but I have the latest MoFi and an OG. The MoFi sounds so amazing to me. It has become one of my go to records to play when someone comes over to hear my setup.

    A local Fresno, CA guy I know, Ray Appleton, was who signed Supertramp to A&M, whom he was working for at the time. I'll forward your video to him to see if he has anything to say about it.
    As far as the OG, The U.S. master was probably cut by Bernie Grundman as he was the chief mastering engineer at A&M back then.
    A&M, like other independents, used multiple pressing plants to press their records, so whomever pressed it made affected the sound. The original album was pressed in the U.S. by many different plants including Monarch Records on their faux vinyl to several different Columbia pressing plants. Probably the best Columbia pressing was done at the Santa Maria, CA plant which was known for it's use of high quality vinyl. In the runout, A&M marked it's records for the pressing plant which was used, followed by the stamper number. "S" was Santa Maria and the other Columbia plants would be identified by "T" and "P", etc. Monarch Pressings would be identified by "M". All the WLP's I've seen were "S1" or "S2".
    For the Mofi editions, the first would have been pressed by JVC in Japan on their "Super Vinyl". The later "DSD" version would have been pressed by RTI. RTI would have done their own plating for the mothers, fathers and stampers.

      Thanks as always for commentary. There was also the Canadian “A&M Audiophile” series which was a 1/2 speed cutting from the original stereo tapes on the JVC Cutting Center audiophile half speed mastering system by Darrell Johnson. Pressed in Japan on virgin vinyl.

    I have a copy of the original that I stole from my brother, a highly underrated album. I bought the SACD hybrid so that I could burn it to flac. The original has always been one of my favorites, but the SACD aquits itself nicely. The one thing about being old, you have all of these nice analog recordings you bought back in the day.

    The biggest problem with current reissues is the condition of the master tapes. I may be wrong but that's probably a bigger problem with the 2018 MOFI than the DSD.
    This is one case where an original can be had cheap. People forget though that OG's can have more inconsistencies than just condition. High volume pressings such as this were notorious at over use of the stampers as well as the differences amongst pressing plants.

    • @SafeAndSoundTXAudioExcursion
      @SafeAndSoundTXAudioExcursion  Рік тому +2

      True on all counts. The tape problem varies from title to title; tape preservation and environment, number of times used, oxide wear, etc.
      One thing for sure, the tapes used in 79 and 82 were their best vintage.
      The OGs can be noisy and/or over pressed as you say.
      That’s why the 82 MOFI gets the Sonic recommendation. And the comparable A&M Audiophile Series out of Canada is essentially the same product and a lesser price on secondary market…

    So I cussed and yelled on the last video in regards to the court case and how I got ripped of by Mobile Fidelity. I deleted it. Now I'm standing up to say SCREW YOU MOBILE FIDELITY. I saw the video of those SMUG CLOWNS laughing at each others jokes thinking they wouldn't get caught by Mike at " The In Grove". I payed for the damn shoes their wearing and I'm pissed off.
    I'm 65 and decided to get back into high end audio so I invested over $4000.00 in Mofi records in new or NM condition off Discogs and Ebay. I got what I wanted and lucky for me the music I like was in the 70's so I was able to get the old silent JAPAN see thru vinyl that they made there records with before all the B.S. came out. I still bought a bunch of the new releases that all sound like shit !! Sorry I'm mad. But all the "GAIN 2" records are all crap vinyl, This grayish vinyl that IS LOUD AS HELL. Even Ricky Lee Jones sounds like shit. Only the old stuff sounds good. I use IEM"S In ear monitors that cost thousands so I can hear it all and I know what the hell I'm talking about. SO YOU SMUG CLOWNS AT MOfI IF YOUR LISTENING YOU OWE ME MONEY. IF I SEE YOU GUYS ON THE STREET I'M GONNA SCREAM OUT LOUD IN FRONT OF EVERYBODY YOU OWE ME.
    Who the HELL MAKES A RECORD WITH DIGITAL DSD 64 AND LIES RIGHT TO OUR FACES AND SAYS IT'S ANALOG, AND EVEN SHOWS THE PICTURES OF THE ANALOGUE PROCESS. DSD 64 IS REGULAR CD QUALITY AND IT SOUND LIKE SHIT. I COULD HAVE JUST BOUGHT THE CD WHICH IS THE E X A C T SAME THING. WHAT A FRIGGIN JOKE . IT'S A FRIGGIN JOKE DO YOU HEAR ME MOFI. I HOPE YOUR NEW PLANT CLOSES AND YOU GO OUT OF BUSINESS FOR THE TRUST YOU STOLE FROM US/ME.

      I have never taken this approach before honestly. As I mentioned in the video, the 82 MOFI was always my “go to” version and my Stereo setup with NAD3140. I did this review using my Pioneer QX-949 and it didn’t sound as dynamic as I recalled. So I hooked up the NAD and it came alive. So I’m going to always use the NAD going forward.

    I have a problem with the cymbals on the mofi 2018 version on a couple of the tracks. While it is known that they were recorded hot, the problem is tamed and hidden much better in the mix on the OG and cd versions. I put it down to the dsd element and likely digital clipping on the mofi 2018 version. Bernie did a great job on the OG and while it doesn’t have the same weight in the bass region, I prefer the OG for its more lively presentation. It sounds fantastic.

    I don't have the original MFSL so I can't comment on it, but I did have a clean analog pressing of Breakfast in America. I compared it to the modern MFSL and surprisingly, they sounded very similar in detail and dynamics. The MFSL was only marginally better in clarity but the biggest difference was the colouring. The MFSL was neutral whereas the earlier analog pressing had that analog warmth to it.

      Fair questions. All of those wee better on the 82 MFSL (when turned up in volume) where as the 2018 MOFI and OG had was more limited in sound stage and imaging. The layering is interesting as that goes back to the recoding itself which I have always felt had limitations in that regard.

    The original mofi is clean and bright. Like Crime Of The Century. Mobile Fidelity said something in their early literature that they don't de horn their metal parts so transients are not degraded. Whatever that means, their early recordings were sharp sounding. Better transients and cleaner sounding than the ORG is what they gave us. Quieter too. They also tampered with the original balance and usually it was a midrange suppression with goosed up bass and highs. It worked better on some music more than others. There is also a half speed master Nimbus Super Cut version of this. You'll probably never find that one on these shores. Maybe in England.

    • @bryede
      @bryede Рік тому

      Horns are small ridges formed at the top edges of the groove as they are cut by the stylus. If you've ever dropped a needle on the land area between grooves and had it stay there instead of dropping down, that's because the horns were sufficiently high enough to keep it up there. De-horning is just shaving a small layer off the top of a positive master.

      When uploading a video. In the Description box (below where you enter the Title) you can input lines starting with a time and then a topic. Example:
      0:00 Introduction
      1:25 The Beatles first gig
      4:37 The Beatles first demos
      6:27 Decca Records won’t sign them

    I have an OG and the 2018 MFSL. I was disappointed with the MSFL, it is noisy, cymbals sound like a tombourine or maracas, just listen to the intro of Gone Hollywood, cymbals sound horrible. During some songs Hogson’s voice sounds buried in the background not upfront like the OG. To me the MFSL is too loud, hot and bright like “metallic sounding” instead of warm. I concur, stick with the OG if you can find a clean copy.

Let's see how long the pointless crusade against Mofi continues? What surprises me anyway is a man of his age who still seems to have absolute pitch. I think all 3 sound very good, but each one sounds a bit different. My favourite is the 45 rpm Mofi version because it is the clearest and best separating version.

      No, 64 is standard DSD that you would get on an SACD. PDM not PCM - quite different technology.

    • @SafeAndSoundTXAudioExcursion
      @SafeAndSoundTXAudioExcursion  Рік тому

      Actually DSD64 is SACD quality, but the DSD file (whether 64 or 256) file copy from MOFI goes through their Gain2 Ultra Analog system to get the lacquer cut. CD's are 16-bit PCM (HDCD was 20-bit). CDs 64are sampled at 44.1kHz while SACD (DSD64) is sampled at 2.8224 MHz (that's Megahertz vs Kilohertz) using a 1-bit depth vs. 16-bit.

    • @SafeAndSoundTXAudioExcursion
      @SafeAndSoundTXAudioExcursion  Рік тому

      @@preservedmoose Yes, SACD's are a 64bit technology (25 years old) and mastering can be done up to DSD512 so it ends up being downgraded to get onto SACD. Converting any DSD, whether 64 or 256, is a matter of the capture sampling done by the DSD recorder to store the file (64=1x, 256=4x). For MOFI to make a record, that file is then put through MOFI's Gain2 Ultra Analog system to get to the lacquer cutter. I think
