My head is exploding. But I can't wait to go crazy trying all this cutting. You are my favorite to watch because you are fun to listen to and watch. I inherited a ton of quilting tools. My first quilt was a real challenge. The importance of measuring reared it's ugly head on my second quilt. I like quilt as I go but have yet to see a method to the madness of pulling it all together. Thank you for helping me.
Rob Just want to say I really enjoyed your video. I been looking for a quilt pattern to do for someone.. and have been watching several of your video's sense you left MSQC. I have to say, You seem so much more relaxed, not over dosed on coffee.. (lol) Your video's are so much more enjoyable, and Understandable. I was really sadden when you left MSQC. But I now think it was really the best thing for you. I look forward to seeing many more of your video's. Love also how you go beyond fabric, to fabric shops, interviewing other great quilting artiest and sewing machine upkeep/repairs and caring for the sewing machine. So glad your still doing crafts, and helping us learn. I will look forward to seeing what your creating next.

This was a fantastic video! Demystifying the math of quilting is something I thing is useful to so many people, myself included. So often a pattern shows you what to cut, but not the math behind it. Knowing this opens up so many new creative options.

I really like the way you showed how to calculate the size of the block by adding to the finished size of the block in the finished quilt. It makes more sense to me. Thanks. I really enjoy your tutorials.
My kids are virtual public school, so....I have no more time! 🤣 I used to make my own patterns all of the time as following someone else's instructions can tend to frustrate me. Loving the video so far!

Seven eighths! That’s the magic number I was missing when I designed my own quilt last year. I ended up having to trim down all my blocks because my HSTs finished too small (I should have made the HSTs first!). Thank you, this was very helpful.

Math has always been such a nightmare for me. Thank you so much for explaining that odd 7/8 I always see in quilt patterns. I just thought the wrote them that way to be mean! I absolutely love that fabric - - and how does one get such a lovely quilt lodged under a chair without someone noticing it?!

Great video! Love the instructions. I like videos of you making something, and loved the recliner story! I like to use 12x12 graph paper to design blocks, and I add the seam allowances to the finished sizes. Almost any pattern can be made with squares and triangles.

Thanks Rob! Great Quilt Math lesson. You mentioned trying it with a 6" measurement, would that yield an 18-1/2" finished block unit that you are showing with the four units together? Then if I were to combine the four finished blocks, like you are showing on your design wall, would that then yield a 36" square finished quilt?
Draw it on paper, work out full measurements then deduct all the seam amount, it will get you a close result?
I like Michael Miller fabric, but it's hard to find some of my favourite designs in the UK 😔
Just a thought - could the original quilt have been made using one of Moda's 'Cake mixes' ? The block looks similar to one of the layouts.

I think only if you were to agree to trim things like HST down. And be prepared to add yardage for accents?

Is Should the 4 inch finish square start as a 5 inch square since on all sides you need a seam allowance?
Hi Cheryl, that sounds like it would be right, but if you started with a 5 inch square you’d end with a 4.5 finished square. The total amount removed from the height when you sew the top and bottom is 1/2 inch. When you sew the sides, you are removing only 1/2 inch from the width, not the height. I had to grab a couple scraps and cut them at 4.5” and 5” to prove it to myself the first time that it really is only 4.5”. Hopefully that did not confuse you further.

I guess when I am told that 4" plus 1/2" makes 41/2 " I am a bit taken aback.
I like your videos, but keep in mind that most of us are able to add sums.
Please do keep it simple, but not that simple. Please!

Anne, my audience is brilliant , that is why they are watching. Please remember how many people use UA-cam to learn a new skill such as quilting. I approach every video assuming there is at least one person who has never made a quilt before, but is watching my video to learn how. I am not talking down to anyone, but offering free education that should be given to every new quilter.

Many creative people do have interesting minds. As someone with ADD, some repetition is welcome to cement the information in place, plus I often take notes into a sewing journal book for later reference. Some skills are intrinsic and others require patience and repetition. Rob is awesome to be doing this work. #RESPECT
