  • The Bijagós Archipelago, located off the coast of Guinea-Bissau in West Africa, is a breathtaking network of some 88 islands and islets, of which only a fraction are inhabited. This UNESCO Biosphere Reserve is celebrated for its extraordinary biodiversity, pristine ecosystems, and the unique culture of the Bijagós people who inhabit it. The archipelago's landscapes are diverse, encompassing lush mangrove forests, sandy beaches, and savannahs, providing habitats for a wide range of species including rare sea turtles, saltwater hippos, and a variety of bird life.
The Bijagós are known for their rich cultural heritage, deeply rooted in respect for nature, with social structures that are notably matriarchal. Traditional practices and beliefs are closely tied to the environment, influencing their fishing, agriculture, and spiritual rituals. The islands offer a glimpse into a way of life that has remained relatively unchanged for centuries, providing insights into the sustainable coexistence of humans and nature.
