"Queen stuns diners with visit to famous Sheep Heid Inn" - Edinburgh Evening News: (Extract) The Queen has given her royal seal of approval to only a tiny number of restaurants in her 90 years. But now one of the Capital’s best-known neighbourhood bars has joined one of the world’s most exclusive clubs. She spent last week at Holyrood Palace and dropped into Scotland’s oldest pub, a short drive from home across Holyrood Park, following a day at Musselburgh Racecourse. Other customers could barely believe their eyes when they saw Her Majesty taking a window seat in the public dining area. Pub staff were given around an hour’s notice of the Queen’s visit before being put to the test in a way none expected when they arrived for their shifts. The Sheep Heid Inn, established in 1360, has been linked to the royal family since the 1580s. One version of how the pub got its name claims that in 1580, King James VI of Scotland gifted the landlord an ornate ram’s head snuff box. It is believed he and his mother, Mary Queen of Scots, stopped by the inn many times to play skittles in the courtyard. Good to mention 1 man owns 25 Tat (sorry souvenir) shops. Support local independent shops ❤️
Yes, that'll be Galab Singh Gold who with his two brothers has been relentlessly gobbling up shop after shop all around the Royal Mile for years to pump out cheap tourist tat and overpriced cashmere etc. His emporiums are a blight on the entire area.
You are both completely MAD! What with the New Year's Dip, and climbing Arthur's Seat in all that wind and rain! I'm watching this with similar weather outside my house, and really enjoying my warm cosy home. But I guess if you are sufficiently wrapped up and waterproof, you can cope with anything. What a lovely day out with lots of different types of experience included - and much less crowded than a sunny day in August! I'd love to revisit Edinburgh at some time- haven't been since I was a teenager (and I am well old these days). Thanks for sharing!
Edinburgh is one of the most beautiful cities I have visited. The history, the architecture , the hills , the green spaces , the castle and the Leap I took when I went as a child and gun went off when I was walking down the street ❤❤❤❤❤
Edinburgh is such a beautiful city Thank you for sharing your adventures! The fresh air and green spaces and bracing wind certainly chases away any cobwebs. Alfie is cute ! Hills are a sign of a city built for winning battles as hills were used as defence strategies!.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
You two are so lucky to live in such an idyllic and beautiful historic country. So much to see so much to do so much walking so much hiking your kids are gonna grow up with such an appreciation and so much knowledge.😊
My favorite city in the world! It's beautiful even on a dreary day. I got chilled just watching the video though and it's a sunny afternoon in central Mexico! 😆
I enjoyed reminiscing about my days in Edinburgh, I think it's been over ten years since I went down there. Thanks, great video! When I got my first mountain bike in '86 and lived on the Meadows I started cycling up Arthur's Seat, well most of it. Happy days! The Sheep Heid was a friday lunchtime local near to the architects I worked for, we played in the 9 pin skittle alley. More happy days! I also worked for another architectural practice and worked on St. Giles. Even more happy days!
Hi guys that was a great video, thanks for taking us along for a date day out lol. Nice change for you to go places and not worry about children prams and dogs.was it the whiskey made you miss the train hahah. Big shoutout for Annie that was some dive. You can take so much for granted when you live there. Everyone should take a day to explore their own town and city you forget things. Zach did you shout freedom at the top of Arthur’s seat your Accent is coming back . Looking forward to next one.
Continuing your walk for your lunch appointment in those weather conditions shows real commitment!Thank you for a wonderful day out in beautiful Edinburgh.
That hike up Arthur's Seat reminded me of when we hiked up Catbells in the Lake District in England. Our son proposed to his girlfriend at the top in an absolute downpour 💧💧☂️
Loved this. I'm from the Central Belt and a wheelchair user. it's fantastic to see from the heat of the house what you can see and experience by foot. Great! You're a lovely family. Thank you x
That was a great "wee" walk round Edinburgh up my beloved Arthur seat i have had a view of it all my life ..the Sheep Heid lovely wee pub thought it was a tad expensive for your meal though ..the loonie dook 😱.. all done in the rain yes we scots are hardy people and Annie has been adopted 😊
Eating out has become so expensive it really is a treat nowadays i would'nt have been happy paying that for two people though ...sign of the times i guess😮
Isn't it the Sheep Heid Inn that the Royal Family pops in to eat at sometimes when they're at Holyrood? I believe the Queen used to, at any rate, which might account for the high price for lunch (plus, that isn't exactly cheap pub fare they were served). I don't think it's somewhere you're going to visit on the regular, but that inn is pretty stunning - the history alone blows my mind - and no doubt they've got a top chef. I'd consider eating there at least once if I had the funds to do so.
Yes i believe the queen did visit😊..ive had few meals in the past (we had gift vouchers ftom family) so did'nt worry to much about prices it is very quaint and worth a visit as a treat😊
@@SimpleScottishLiving St Andrew`s,Crail,Pittenweem,Aberdour Falkland and loads of other places on coast and inland,Culross is a must. Fife Coastal Path is a great way if you like walking.

I really enjoyed your taking us around Edinburgh bought back so many wonderful memories I love Scotland if I was 40 again would shift there to live . Sharyn and Rosie 🇳🇿. Happy New Year 🥳
Thank you! Yes, it’s all about the way you dress to get the most out of everything available. I learned that the hard way my first ever visit to Scotland!
I was in Scotland in the 1990’s and St Giles church was one of my favorites. Very beautiful and the choir was practicing the day we were there. It was great to sit and listen.
I live on a Scottish island and do the new years dip every year. Emphasise on “dip”. I’ve really enjoyed following your videos. HNY to you and hope your family enjoys this wonderful country.
I love your tour of Edinburgh! My daughter and I visited Scotland in autumn 2023. I saw many of the places we experienced and got ideas for the next trip! Happy New Year, Zach and Annie!
Just love your videos and seeing my old home town. Thank you. Recommendation for two cafes. Black Medicine Coffee on South Bridge near the museum is really good and I love going there on a rainy day to sit, and read. Also apparently J K Rowling is supposed to have written some chapters there (as an aside I love how odd life is. My hometown she was inspired and wrote some of her book. Where I live now she went to school (I went to the same school too! Love this). Anyhoo also round the corner is the Origin Coffee, south college street. You can also visit the museum. As a kid I loved it here and went most weekends, your kids will love it. Anyhoo all the best and thank you for the videos
Tracey’s first visit to Scotland was in 2015, when we got married at Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh - now she’s counting down the days until we can move! Always look forward to what we can learn from you two.
That was an excellent video enjoyed every minute of it l only live 45 minutes train ride from Edinburgh haven’t been for a while will definitely try and go soon hope you have a very good 2025 love from Scotland ❤
Wow,my grandparents lived near there,we fed ducks at duddingston loch! Walked to shops at grassmarket, royal mile, Christmas Market in princess Street Gardens! Love the cobbled streets, try to visit Edinburgh every year, love it so much ❤
a happy new year to the whole family. thank you for allowing us to share in your journey in 2024. i look forward to continuing your adventure in 2025. xxx
Fantastic👏👏👏 1st class video ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐You did Scotland proud. Looks like you both enjoyed a fabulous day out, kids free! Thank you so much for sharing your journey. 🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄😘😘🥰🥰
Glad you enjoyed it!! We had the best time and felt reenergized after this one. Always nice to have a day date! Thanks for watching ❤️🏴 Happy 2025!!
Maybe my favorite video yet! Love that adventurous spunk in your son, racing his heart out to jump in the sea! The playlist throughout was perfect. Filming was terrific! So many good tips and things to remember for a future trip! 5/5 😊
Edinburgh never looks bad - it is glorius in the sunshine & majestic in the rain. Happy New Year to you & your family & may you have a peaceful & prosporous 2025.
Haha exactly!!! Were you at Portobello, South Queensferry, elsewhere? We might consider a bigger Dook when the kids get a tad older. My toes were feeling nothing by the end of it!
What fun! Thank you for letting us join you. This tour is definitely now on my To-Do-In-Scotland list. (I’m going to have to up my daily 3-4 mile walks in preparation though…) And I will never complain about the wind where I live again! 😂❤
Enjoyed the video, I should add in, you were very close to the famous Writers museum, which is just off of St. Gile's Cathedral, there's a small alley that leads out to a courtyard there that houses much of the works of the likes of Robert Burns, Robert Lewis Stevenson, etc. John Knox house is also close to that. St. Gile's Cathedral, if I remember right, was once head of state, a very significant historical building. It is beautiful inside, there's even a wee bit you can get to the top for an overview. Have you's been up Calton Hill? That's another interesting viewpoint. The wee loch place you's visited looked wonderful and many of the places you's visited. When the weather is better, be sure to check out the Scottish Seabird Centre, something your kids would love as well, they can tour you out by boat around the famous Bass Rock where you get to see all the gannets, the world's largest seabird population. Just thought I'd add that in given you's are out that way a lot. 🙂
Loved this video of your trip to Edinburgh brought back memories when I went there many moons ago. I did a motor home tour in 1981 to Glen Coe travelling all the way up the west coast to Ullapool and plockton absolutely beautiful.
That sounds like the idea trip! Those are all places that we can’t wait to explore and hopefully sooner rather than later. Thank you so much for tuning in! Happy new year! ❤️🏴
Loved the loony dook thanks so much x Tron Kirk - once had a work Christmas night out in it. When I lived in Edinburgh I walked from the north of Edinburgh (trinity) up to top ( where you were) and back home every Sunday x
Absolutely brilliant, you made the best day out in the middle of winter with the Scottish weather, you both did amazingly well, you just have to get out there and live your life as best you can and experience it all, and you two just do it, Thankyou for your video. ❤️🏴 xxx
Thanks guys for a great vlog. I appreciate the vast hours needed to edit your vlogs. I picture you both curled up in front a log fire amicably deciding what cuts, but ultimately reliving the day.
Glad you enjoyed it! All the editing credits go to Annie. She is the artistic mastermind behind each video. She is normally seated by a heat source, though! 🤣
What a wonderful days out in Edinburg. Armchair Books reminds me of City Lights in San Francisco. Annie do you miss the warm sunny beaches of CA? I know I would love the wonderful life in Scotland and change it in a minute from CA. Thank you for the tour.
Awe, I love that. What a romantic place and perfect spot for a proposal. Thank you so much for tuning in and for sharing ❤️ Hope 2025 is treating you well so far!
Great video! Loony dookers! Well done, very brave to do that, all of you. I have never been in the sea in Scotland above my ankles, even in the summer it’s too cold😂😂 What a fab day out in Edinburgh you both had, at least you were well prepared for the weather. Last time we were in The Jolly Judge, hubby asked about the price of a beer, he was told they were expensive but worth it. At £4.95 a pint, it was half the price of one here in UAE, so he had 2😂😂 We are going to try The Milkman next time we are there. Sandra 😘😘
Happy New Year to you both and to all your family. That water looked cold but looks like you all had fun doing the dip. its nice to see that Edinburgh has more to offer than the Castle, St Giles Cathedral looks so impressive and well worth a visit. don't forget to ask people to subscribe to your channel . So now its a new year, so what is your plan and places you both will visit. Will searching for your roots take you on a journey of discovery? I am looking forward your next instalment. Dave
Have a Healthy , happy New Years, Zach,Annie + family. Love your videos. I can’t Believe you guys did that Loony Dip. ( you guys just gave me a bucket list). Keep the videos coming please, Thank you. From PA
So interesting to see an insider view of Edinburgh. Thank you for sharing. I thoroughly enjoyed it, except for the mud ! All the best...see you next week.
As a Scot from Stirling living in Toronto, Canada for the past 50 years.......,.I visited Edinburgh three years ago, St.Giles was where the Queen lay in state.upon her death. ...I also spent time in Faulkland...., Loved your video, it really made me homesick...
We did Arthur’s seat on Christmas Eve and it was wet and blowy then (and also a bit Baltic). Very tricky at the top. However, my recommendation for a tourist trap that makes you feel really glad that you have got trapped is Mary King close on the Royal Mile. A mind blowing revelation on what life was like in Edinburgh in past times - 18th and 19th centuries. Fascinating. If you want to spend a bit of money at a restaurant, Angels with bagpipes comes with great recommendations. Next Christmas take your children to the Botanical Gardens for their light show. It is stunningly beautiful. And if you want a British experience then a Christmas panto would be something to try. Though you may need to know about Hibs and Hearts. 😊
Yes! Thank you for all of this. We are adding to our list. It’s crazy to say, but neither of us has been to Mary King Close but have only heard raving reviews. We’d love to do that next time. And the kids are definitely getting lessons on the teams at school already 🤣 I think we have one supporter for each. We’ll have to work on that!
My daily walk to work was from Waverly, up the Fleshmarket close steps, along royal mile and behind the castle. It's was nice and scenic, I definitely got my steps in 😅
What a full on day you 2 had.. phew! You would have slept well that night. Thanks for such a beautiful episode ❤️ Edinburgh is absolutely stunning 😍 and that cathedral.. oh my! Xx
Just wanted to say that you guys so darn cute! Wishing you and your family a very happy and healthy 2025! Love your videos. We're moving back from Florida next month with our 2 pups. Can't wait!
Hi! We did manage to get a lot done. However, we never felt rushed, which was something we wanted to highlight, and often, on holiday, people try and do too much in one day! Thanks for watching and commenting!
It's good to see you guys on our West Beach for the Loony Dip. Lorna did it the first year we were here. Did you see the new shop? It's on Church Road called The Cheese Lady. It's a fab choice and right opposite the bus stop, too. If you need to eat out while in North Berwick, I recommend The Ship and The Golfers, and The Grange Steakhouse and the Herringbone, just two doors from us. But booking is essential for both. We stay just around two doors before The Herringbone and two floors above Lockets Wine Shop. Our building was built in 1892, and we have 39 steps, though I go up on a rack railway, being ability challenged, having a paralyzed right leg. If you go to St Giles Cathedral when you are on the Royal Mile, and you, need refreshments, I recommend the Cathedral Crypt.
Great suggestions, thank you so much for sharing! You live in a fantastic location. We absolutely love the Cheese Lady as well! You’ve given us quite a bit to add to our to-do list. Thanks for watching and for taking the time to share. Happy new year ❤️
Thank you for a great video really enjoyed joining you in Edinburgh, our favourite city, even although we were born in Glasgow and live in Nth Yorkshire. What a walk you did wow, we're too old for that now so it was great to be on the journey with you. We met for the first time in Edinburgh in 1962 so love going back for a weekend break, hoping to go early spring when we visit our daughter in Nth Lanarkshire. Enjoy a happy healthy new year, luvnhugs.
Oh wow. This brought back so many memories, thank you. Such a shame that you couldn't see Jenners (department store on Princes Street) as it was before it closed a few years ago. I tasted Haggis for the first time in a pub on the Royal Mile on my honeymoon (I'm Scottish born (Stirling) but dragged up in Yorkshire). I just checked, and I can fly from here (Normandie) to Edinburgh and back for 110€. Under £100. I am seriously considering it.
Omg, I’d have thought I’d died and gone to heaven looking at those pastries ❤ gorgeous scenery too (should’ve mentioned that first, but you see my love of all things cakes & pastries won) 😂x
Absolutely delightful! We have visited most of the places you went to and with each one, it brought a tear to me eye. Thank you so very much for this wonderful video. Your long hours of work are so very much appreciated. I can no longer walk without a walker for assistance and many places are just not accessible so your work takes me back there and I am thrilled. I look forward to more like this. Great work. 👏👏👏👏👏👩🏻🦳👨🏻🦳❤️🏴
Highly recommend the fudge kitchen. You walked past on the royal mile at 12.16. you can watch them make the fudge and they always have free samples. Its a tiny little shop. I recommend the toffe fudge. Like no other fudge you will have tried. Its so smooth
Edinburgh looked stunning amazing city , and Annie's pronunciation when she said Loch was very Scottish :) . I always got told off by my wife for saying Loch like lock ! Great video guys :)
Please like and subscribe if you learned something new or enjoyed today’s video! Thank you! ❤

Hi Zach and Annie, please look at the the history of the Broughty Ferry Loony Dook. It is far older.
The iron bridge at the Firth of Fourth is one of my favorite bridges ever. And yinz are nuts doing the loony thing lol!

@@SimpleScottishLiving Happy new year to you there.
Happy New Year from 🇨🇦 and thanks for the tour. That was a treat and appeared to be a workout for Zach.
Happy new year!! I certainly got my steps in that day. I think it was about 20,000 steps according to my watch 😄
I love your videos like this! Your country is beautiful and I love seeing it thru your videos! 5/5!!!!
Thanks so much! We’re glad you enjoyed it!
Great video. I live in Edinburgh and now must visit lots of new places I've not yet been!
We feel the same way! There’s still so much to do. Guess we have the rest of our lives now 😉 Hapoy 2025!
Scotland has a way of getting to your ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
It does!!
What a wonderful days out in Edinburg. Armchair Books reminds me of City Lights in San Francisco. Annie do you miss the warm sunny beaches of CA? I know I would love the wonderful life in Scotland and change it in a minute from CA. Thank you for the tour.
So enjoy experiencing Scotland with y’all! I’d love to visit the UK someday.
We're so glad you're enjoying the journey with us! We hope you get to experience the UK someday as well. Happy new year!
St Margaret’s Loch looks incredible!
A favourite spot especially on a sunny day!
Loved everything about your video today, love, love Edinburgh it’s where my husband proposed to me 40 years ago!
Awe, I love that. What a romantic place and perfect spot for a proposal. Thank you so much for tuning in and for sharing ❤️ Hope 2025 is treating you well so far!
Great video! Loony dookers! Well done, very brave to do that, all of you. I have never been in the sea in Scotland above my ankles, even in the summer it’s too cold😂😂
What a fab day out in Edinburgh you both had, at least you were well prepared for the weather.
Last time we were in The Jolly Judge, hubby asked about the price of a beer, he was told they were expensive but worth it. At £4.95 a pint, it was half the price of one here in UAE, so he had 2😂😂
We are going to try The Milkman next time we are there.
Sandra 😘😘
Happy New Year to an adorable couple!! 🎉Wonderful video, enjoyed every minute!
Thanks so much! We hope you had a wonderful New Year too!
We appreciate you watching! We can't wait to share more of our favourite Edinburgh spots! ❤️🏴
Ah, thanks for the memories! I was born in Bruntsfield Hospital but haven’t been back to Edinburgh in decades so thank you for sharing 👋
Thank you for sharing! So glad we could help 😄
As a Scot from Stirling living in Toronto, Canada for the past 50 years.......,.I visited Edinburgh three years ago, St.Giles was where the Queen lay in state.upon her death. ...I also spent time in Faulkland...., Loved your video, it really made me homesick...
We're so glad to hear that you enjoyed the video and that it brought back some wonderful memories!
29:07 thats me everyday in that station on the way home from work lol
Ahh, so your other half also stops for a last-minute hot chocolate, too? 🤣🤦😉
@@SimpleScottishLiving All my own fault. I need to start walking faster...before i reach the station :)
Thanks for taking us along on your tour of Edinburgh! Happy New Year!🎉
Thanks for watching! Happy New Year to you too! ❤️🏴
I love your story! Can’t wait to visit Scotland!
Hope you have a great time when you visit! 😊
It's was nice and scenic, I definitely got my steps in 😅
You packed soooo much into your day ! An amazing trip around Edinburgh, I loved sharing it, thank you both 😊
Suzy
Thank you so much!
What a full on day you 2 had.. phew! You would have slept well that night. Thanks for such a beautiful episode ❤️ Edinburgh is absolutely stunning 😍 and that cathedral.. oh my! Xx
Glad you enjoyed it! Yes, the cathedral was a treat. Walked past it dozens of times and had never gone in before. Won’t make that mistake again!
Just wanted to say that you guys so darn cute! Wishing you and your family a very happy and healthy 2025! Love your videos. We're moving back from Florida next month with our 2 pups. Can't wait!
Wow! what a lot of adventure for one day. Thank you for sharing this day with us. Hi from Oregon.
Hi! We did manage to get a lot done. However, we never felt rushed, which was something we wanted to highlight, and often, on holiday, people try and do too much in one day! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Loved it! I was looking forward to watching this, and it didn’t disappoint. Thanks for sharing.
So glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
Your entry run into the cold water was hilarious. The food at the 14th century pub (I forgot the name) looked delicious.
I was strangely moved by some of the footage of your absolutely GORGEOUS country! VisitScotland should be paying you two! 👍❤️
You’re too sweet! Thank you! So glad you enjoyed the video as it’s personally one of our favourites as well. Thanks for watching 🏴❤️
Happy new year ❤️
Oh to be young and fit! Great video.
Thank you! It certainly was a lot of walking. Lots of Edinburgh is very walkable, and you don't always have to hike a hill for your lunch! 🤣
On Jan 1st, it's the Polar Bear swim in Vancouver, B.C. each year. :)
Love it! Did you do it this year?!
Happy New Year! I usually climb Arthur's Seat on the 1st but wimped out this year due to the icy rain. Well done for getting to the top!
Happy new year to you as well! The weather was not in your favour, so I don’t blame you!! Thanks for tuning in ❤️
Love this video! You guys are fun to watch.
Thank you! We had a great time filming this one 😊 Appreciate you tuning in. Happy new year!
Thanks for the tour of Edinburgh and the Royal Mile! Your channel is always a pleasure to spend time with.
Thanks for watching! We are so glad you enjoy the channel! We’re happy to have you tuning in again. Happy new year!
What an amazing day!!❤
We’re so glad you enjoyed it! It was a wonderful day all around.
That’s a good deal! Definitely worth the trip! Glad our video was nostalgic ❤️🏴
Loved the video. It's so great to see such wonderful places to see in Scotland. It's one of my dream vacations!
Thanks for watching! Scotland is a wonderful place to visit!
Omg, I’d have thought I’d died and gone to heaven looking at those pastries ❤ gorgeous scenery too (should’ve mentioned that first, but you see my love of all things cakes & pastries won) 😂x
That was a fabulous treat ,what a great video x
You are so kind! We loved this day out ❤️
Absolutely delightful!
Edinburgh has been on my list for a while.
Thanks guys, that was great.
Glad you enjoyed it! Happy new year!
Well done on the looney dook guys! I’m in East Lothian and New Years day was awful here..hats off to you 🥶
Hi Zach and Annie . Your videos are great and so are you! I hope you have a Very Happy New Year!
Thank you so much! You too! Hoping 2025 is treating you well so far ❤️
What a great day out - I didn't know there was a maker's market in the Tron so will pop in soon. Thanks!
Yes, neither did we! Such a nice thing to stumble upon!
Highly recommend the fudge kitchen. You walked past on the royal mile at 12.16. you can watch them make the fudge and they always have free samples. Its a tiny little shop. I recommend the toffe fudge. Like no other fudge you will have tried. Its so smooth
Ooh great suggestion!! That’ll be a must do next time.
Edinburgh looked stunning amazing city , and Annie's pronunciation when she said Loch was very Scottish :) . I always got told off by my wife for saying Loch like lock ! Great video guys :)
