HDR Using my Panasonic GH5-S

- You need an HDR screen to see this. If you don't have one, your phone might!
See SDR here - • SDR Using my Panasonic...
HDR is currently a lost cause. Settings either don't work, or look overblown. Even after all these years, support for it is so limited and buggy! But hopefully this video will demonstrate just how bright the HDR parts of a video can look. No colour correction or editing was done of any sort, beyond finding the HDR colour profile that didn't muted / over-exposed the footage the least. You should have seen the other profiles! I literally tested every one.
For anybody following in my footsteps, who happens use a GH5 to record footage and Vegas to edit (And me in 6 months time when I've forgotten how I did this!), HERE is how to get it working on UA-cam in HDR.
1) Record on your GH5 using 10 bit 4K 30 fps Long Gop 150 mbps.
2) Once it's loaded in Vegas, set Project properties to: imgur.com/QFhQhfa
3) Go to Project Media, select it all then click the cog above for 'Media Properties': imgur.com/clVOQpT
4) Then render with these settings: imgur.com/jRxsTEp ...but of course, matching it to your framerate. In my case, 29.97 fps.
5) Upload to UA-cam, discover it doesn't play in HDR
6) Wait a week
7) ???
8) Profit! It is now encoded in 4K HDR.
And before you say 'you used the wrong settings!', yeah, I tried the right ones and they didn't work, then wasted dozens of hours of my life rendering literally hundreds of different combinations until one looked right. Vegas doesn't like GH5 HDR files. This was done in Vegas 19. If you have something different... God help you
This music will never get old
I pretty much fall asleep with it every night lol
Ah i get it, he's showcasing HDR tm
Exactly.
What music is it
@@tenns ? There's not joke. This is his song, he's been using it for years and it's still brilliant.
You made me realize just how little I actually use the HDR functionality on my phone for most normal media. The shots here look great!
Wait.. My phone has HDR? I just noticed after having it for 4 years. The video looks amazing
@@kliksphilip lol yeah
Wow you really knocked it out of the park with the graphics on the new Destruction Darius
It's weird how much more vibrant the HDR version looks without feeling oversaturated or unnatural, heck it feels more natural
Also great shots!
i played both SDR & HDR side by side on my browser.
i didnt know until this moment that my laptop had an HDR screen, this looks insanely better than the SDR one.
i did notice tho, u can see a LOT more difference if you view them side by side in low brightness. the moment i set my screen brightness to maximum i couldnt tell which one is which.
i think is something about viewing hdr content in sdr monitor that makes it look better anyways. I have a definitely sdr display (samsung t350fh 24"), and the hdr video still looks a lot better.
But who'd want to burn their eyes all day on max brightness?
A lot of HDR monitors aren’t actually HDR. Anything under 1000 nits peak brightness without local dimming isn’t really HDR
Can't wait to see the upscale Philip does of this in a few years.
I really appreciate the detailed run-down in the description of how you got HDR going on UA-cam.
I don't have any plans of doing anything similar myself, but I got curious about the process when you briefly mentioned troubleshooting it in another video.
Always fun to get more insight into how things work, so it is super cool of you to share how you went about it.
@@kliksphilip I guess someone always has to be the first to go through the process of developing solutions for problems. It is cool to see when that one person shares their experience and help others have an easier time.
I only got a HDR monitor quite recently, so I've found any insight into how the technology works, as well as how HDR media works, to be quite interesting.
I'm a bit surprised that Vegas can work with HDR at all, so it's neat to see that it indeed can. Maybe I should finally after all these years upgrade from my ancient Vegas 13 build to something a bit more up-to-date.
Gonna have an unpopular opinion here. My eyes hurt a bit on this one. Literally. When I came back to the SDR version, it was such a relief. I recall a similar feeling after watching a couple 3D movies in cinema back in early 2010s - did only regular ones ever since. Watching it in the morning, so the eyes are more sensitive now (but maybe it’s a clearer experiment then). So idk if HDR is going to have massive adoption. Plus all the hustle with rendering and stuff.
Some people are more sensitive to light, sound, smell or other impressions.
The sky at about 0:45 is awesome. Thanks for the video and good job on the shots! Not sure if you did any edits but for what I'm assuming is one of your first HDR shoots this is nice
almost looks like one of the skies from sky color test on csgo maps
The difference is insane yet not overdone, this video made me remember how beautiful the beach actually is.
Beautiful rolling cerulean ocean and an awe inspiring orange sunset
0:34
This is YOUR daily dose of internet.
This baby seal just rolled off of a side of a mountain.
This type of content is one if not the best for HDR
It looks like UA-cam actually does its own SDR tonemapping for HDR footage being played back on non HDR devices... and it seems to have much better color accuracy and shadow detail in comparison to your SDR version (especially sky gradients and the color of grass). Your SDR version excels at properly distinguishing distant terrain from further distant terrain better though.
Maybe it's a different compression? Could uploading in HDR be advantageous to regular SDR viewers too perhaps?
I love when i get to have hdr content ... and this video really sells hdrs capabilities to me and justifies my phones hdr display...
I just bought a new phone with an AMOLED display and with this video I just discovered the true capabilities of HDR. Thanks Philip, gorgeous shots!
Turned from beautiful landscapes into the first fives minutes of a Horror movie, then back to beautiful landscapes.
I'm always surprised how the music captures nostalgia so well.
You've even got the shadow directions corresponding with the sun's position, nice map dude!
I didn't even know my phone was HDR capable! Even as I'm typing this it appears to have changed the contrast of my whole phone. Very interesting.
Yeah the darker colours of on all the interfaces now have a tinge of red for me, which is weird.
the seals playing near the water is the highlight of the video in my opinion
I didn't know my tv had hdr until yesterday when I put on a bluray disc and it looks really good even if it feels a bit over saturated. Night scenes with orange light and blue fog look absolutely gorgeous it was as bright as if I was there in real life.
That last photo reminded me of my holiday to Twitchen house back in 2014. I forgot all about it until the image tripped my memory. Thank you for that 🙂
When you click on a HDR video in the dark and immediately get blinded by your phone :D
I watched this on my 2K HDR monitor and the detail and color is N U T T Y.
really love the way you do your videos. The Music always gives a sense of nostalgia
i watched this video on my HDR phone and SDR monitor at the same time, and holy smokes it looks so good. i have never actually seen HDR anywhere, except in store displays.
The sky is just so *blue*, and the reflection of the sun in the sand at 1:20 is just eyemeltingly orange.
in addition, HDR on an OLED screen makes the contrasts in the scene at 1:07 just jawdropping
edit: i think i have a watchtime percentage of 1000 now
My favourite detail: The rainbow lights in the bar - last shot.
Insertion III looking great!
Great-looking shots. Thank you for the information on your camera - I know I and probably many others have been wondering for a while.
Thanks for the video, this is something I've always wanted to check but never have gotten around to. So, I opened both videos on my Dell Ultrasharp from 2015? and on my new Samsung G7 which allegedly is HDR600. There is a *massive* difference between your HDR vs SDR render on the same screen, but that presumably is due to the color profile trouble you mentioned in the description.
However, comparing HDR vs HDR on both screens shows the effect very subtlely: For example, at 0:00, the SDR screen is somewhat flat, rendering the brick wall almost as bright as the rest of the landscape. The HDR meanwhile makes it much, much darker, without losing detail. The bright parts are more difficult to compare - direct sun and it's reflections are somewhat overblown in both, especially compared to the SDR render - but what is noticable is that the HDR monitor is a bit brighter than the SDR one.
That beautiful scenery and great shots. Watched on my phone for the HDR. As someone not accustomed to HDR content, that was amazing.
i never noticed how good hdr was until now
Gotta love how much efford you put in the description
Btw theres a typo in the last word of the first paragraph, not trying to be that guy but after all the efford might as well correct it :S
Beautiful video, was great to be able to appreciate your music alongside it!
Damn this looks awesome! Sunsets are such a great example and this kinda showed me how little youtube and even netflix used this functionality. The only time i noticed it on netflix is when the screen is very dim and all the sudden theres blue/white sky and my eyes are burning :D
I bet this looks great but I don't have an hdr display so I can't say for sure lol
Just use your phone, most of them are oled and should give you a good experience of what this is meant to be like
Look on your phone if its a flagship from the last like 5 years it should have HDR
Neat. I've never actually watched anything HDR before and just now realized my iMac supports it. Tried both versions of your video side by side on my iMac and my Windows gaming PC with my Acer non-HDR Acer monitor and there's definitely a difference between the non-HDR Acer monitor and the HDR iMac, but it's not very big imo. It's most noticeable in how the sky is an ugly teal color on the Acer, but a vibrant blue on the iMac. The SDR version looks almost identical on both displays and I still very much prefer the SDR version on both displays. I think it has much nicer colors, contrast and I find it a lot more pleasing to look at. Regarding colors and contrast I guess it's the lack of colors and constrast that I prefer compared to the HDR version.
OMG! This is just amazing!
I never actually realized I have a HDR capable phone!
I mean I knew just never really cared about it.
Seriously considering getting a HDR monitor for gaming.
This is amazing! I was waiting to watch this when I plug in my laptop to charging hahahaha. Otherwise it simply uses SDR.
This is literally what you remember your vacation was like vs what it actually was like. lol
0:49 couple of lovely parasol mushrooms you have there :)
Crazy how for most of us our phones have the most capable displays! I can never tell when HDR has kicked in, looks great nevertheless
Alright just got back from the sdr version it has definitely kicked in, looks great
Its subtle but still decently noticeable tbh.
Atleast for me, and im only using HDR600
You're right, it is glorious.
well even on my non HDR monitor the HDR version looks better, so idk what to make of it
i dont have an HDR screen, but find the B-roll awe-inspiring!

Looks splendid!
Feels weird looking at Woolacombe with music that makes me think of csgo
First of all, great content phillip!
In my galaxy m31 the HDR suddenly popped and looked amazing, but a few seconds later became just really washed out.
Not sure if my phone is the problem here, just letting you know.
wow thats some beautiful footage
The sky at 0:45. I compared my HDR phone to my good IPS monitor and the difference is just mind boggling. Can't wait to one day get a HDR monitor (and by then hopefully HDR is better supported :D)
My 3 year old oled phone is my only hdr device, and the time I bought it, I was slightly salty about Digital Foundry no longer uploading HDR reviews.
Since HDR cranks up the brightness, I can't tell if all the vivid colors and pop are just the doing of a bright oled screen, or I'm perceiving HDR the same way we think about high refresh rates. You forget about it when it's there, but severely miss it when it's gone.
Regardless, pretty video, awesome colors and shots. I'm not sold on HDR still.
Looks familiar, Valley of the rocks? Definitely Devon somewhere
so _THAT'S_ why i thought my phone screen was going all weird when i saw some hdr video while scrolling on reddit
now i know
looks pretty cool
Wonderful. Thank you Philip.
it's like looking at the sun
finally philip makign hdr content. smaller dream of mine accomplished. (still can't justify my hdr monitor tho)
Love the description. Very similar to how I write developer comments.
Here I am debugging unity on my UBports phone and you're doing this. Darn.
Wow that looks great!
Also, amazing work. Hope you get to explore more places and capture more memories!

See these rocks? They were made by earth and the skin is gray-rock well worn, factory new doesn't exist anymore unless you go back in time few million years
I search "gh5 HDR" and click on this video, and was about to comment that this sounds like 3klik until I noticed this channel.
if you're watching this video on an SDR device, you're shown an SDR processed video so the colours are 'corrected' into SDR. you are shown an 'entirely different' video when you watch this on HDR device.
you can try taking a screenshot both on HDR and SDR then compare the two side by side on the same monitor.

I like how you edited this
Now i see why HDR400 monitors is not that good unless the video is mastered for it. The whites are overexposed and the blacks are crushed. But something like Dune, the movie, looked absolutely perfect.
I compared it with my non-hdr monitor and my hdr iphone screen and I could really notice the difference at the 1:06 part, on the monitor it looked kinda flat but with hdr it was beautiful
Between supposedly HDR phone screen and my SDR monitor the biggest difference is at 1:38. On PC I see everything in the dark but on phone it's actually dark. The person on left is barely visible on phone. Compared to the SDR version, UA-cam's algorithm destroys the blue sky, it makes it a weird oversaturated cyan. Otherwise the conversion looks better than pure SDR.
Klikkyphilip, you owe me Dino Nuggies you know, ever since the old 1.6 days..
im high right now and this is amazing
Its interesting that I found that my SDR monitor kept more detail than my HDR (i think, its OLED/AMOLED after all) Pixel 3A.
I didn't expect such a difference 'O'
Woah, this is different
No subtitles on the new video? Money takes another great youtuber, such a shame to see klik phillip not care about his fans
Highlights seem a bit oversaturated, but beautiful overall
this is the first time I've seen the hdr thing when selecting the quality of the video
I wonder, with the even more increased focus on phone camera quality, is it still a good idea to get a small handheld camera ? Or just get a more premium phone that has the best camera specs
Hey, is there any way that I can download your musics in great quality? It'd be great for my morning alarm
Some of these shots remind me of the elder scrolls 6 trailer
FYI it looks like Firefox doesn't support HDR here, had to open in Safari on my new MBP to get the HDR option to show up on UA-cam. It does look stunning!
"You need an HDR screen to see this"
But I can watch this video just fine?
It does look better on an HDR display but the parts that already had like higher contrast even in SDR still looked quite good and very similar to the HDR version and the other parts that looked bland on SDR looked better on HDR version. But if you had edited the footage to have like higher contrast and done some color correction etc. then even the SDR version would have probably looked very similar to the HDR version even when viewed on an SDR display. Obviously it won't be quite the same but close enough that I wouldn't care. Also sometimes HDR will lose detail like dark spots can look pitch black but on the SDR version you can see those areas much more clearly with more detail.
Best Screen I have is my phone's. Mi 9, and this definitely looks better. My old monitor doesn't really make a big difference.
Hdr standards are messed up... Anyway, this video looks great on my good old q8fn.
We need the music kit!!!
I think the screenshot at 4) deserves some upscaling...
First time in my life that my eyes hurted when watching a video on my phone
I don't know what this is but very cool
yoo Philip where is the footage from? It looks extremely beautiful
South-west of England, I think Plymouth but could be off.
this is quite nice although I watched this on my nonHDR monitor lol
At 0:12 the HDR sky looks a bit unreal though. Its like the contrast has just been turned up really far. The blue looks too baby blue.
the bright objects "feel" very bright, like i actually have to squint, but i don't see any benefit to the dynamic range. i am watching on a small display, but i cannot make out things in shadow and in highlight, the exposure of the camera still is too narrow. maybe thats my display again, but this is the best Samsung had to offer at the time this phone came out, which wasn't very long ago. but yeah, i could at least tell it was different.
specifically, the last image was very disappointing. yeah, the sun is very bright, but to me that looks SDR. the exposure might be wider, but i cannot tell because of how skewed it is in the higher range. am i misunderstanding how HDR works?
I watched on my monitor (LG 27gl850) and it was kinda boring.. Then watched again on my Iphone 13 pro, and wow such a difference.
I don't know if I have an HDR Screen or not, but looking at both the SDR and HDR videos I can tell that the HDR one has colours that look so much more vibrant. SDR looks very washed out in comparison.
I might be wrong, but maybe UA-cam only shows HDR next to the video quality if you have an HDR screen. At least I can't see it on PC but it shows on mobile.
Nuts!
It looks like there is a shader. Not sure if I like it yet
wow, I didn't notice that it was working but i just turned off my hdr capabilities in windows to test obs, and yeah its unbelievable how much detail gets lost, however this still appears different to the other video that was uploaded in sdr.
Funny thing, I have the most amazing 5120x2160 HDR display, and I can barely see a difference.
(And yes, I play CS:GO at native res on this display, deal with it)
There's a huge improvement from recording in HDR for the final result, but switching between S3 mode and HDR barely does anything.
I have an HDR monitor but I can't see them in HDR. Do I have to do something? Any game works fine.
@@kliksphilip Well, it was the Windows HDR. I turned it off because it's not good. When I restarted the browser it's enabled again. On that note this looks stunning!
