While it pains me to say, because I think on general principle they should be a thing to prevent unnecessary e-waste, replacement batteries aren't always everything they're cracked up to be. In most cases your phone will be years old by the time you need one, and sourcing a new battery of the same quality as the original can be surprisingly difficult. A few years ago I had a galaxy S4 with a shot battery, so I shopped around and ended up paying pretty good money for a legit Samsung brand replacement (particularly so that it had NFC) from a certified reseller with good reviews. Unfortunately, it turned out that while the original was made in Korea, Samsung made this replacement in China and it was of drastically inferior quality. Within 6 months of normal use it had substantially less battery life and had begun physically bloating. I think if getting a good replacement battery is that difficult for a phone as common as the S4, I doubt I would bother even if I had the option and just buy a new phone in 3 years or so when the original starts going.
Have you considered installing GCam on your ROG Phone? 99% of the Pixel's camera is software, and there's a large community that ports the Pixel camera app to other devices.
Yes to this. A while back I had an LG V20, which had a fairly good camera, and my friend had an original Pixel, which notably lacked any optical image stabilization, while my V20 did have optical stabilization. With the ported pixel HDR google camera app, I could take FAR better low light photos due to the stabilization than my friend could on the pixel.

love these videos! the quality is indistinguishable from a usual CS:GO or other “gaming” video, because like those, these videos aren’t about counter-strike, and rarely just a extension of the title, it’s your views and opinions on anything and everything. this is the type of content i see and think, “i genuinely hope he loves making these types of videos”, because they seem fun, easier to make relative to 3kliks content, yet with the exact same appeal in my opinion. you never make a video “about” something, you document your own experience with it, often with raw thoughts and unanswered questions, which conveys a sense of authenticity and familiarity. i don’t care what the thumbnail or title is for these videos, i see them and know i’m getting a honest, insightful view on a topic that even if i would’ve never found interesting, i do because your method of presenting ideas with such authenticity and originality is really impressive, and these videos are exactly what i wish more of youtube embodied. do what you love, period, never settle for anything, and know your content is always going to be your own and something no one else can make. much love.
i still have a samsung phone from 2015. it works fine, feels great, and has a removable battery (i know, next gen stuff). it is a bit slow, and is lacking storage space. But i hate the thought of spending a hundred or so euros to replace something that still works. I even dropped it in water once, and despite it not being water rated, it still works. I got it used for 60 euro and will run it into the ground.
Oh my, Phil′s gonna be so happy when he hears about Gcam ports. As a Samsung user with a midrange phone with Exynos processor, that's one treat I can't get my hands on
Everyone can relate to the feeling of having a shitty phone that you can just barely put up with and then when you buy a new one it's like a whole freight train of frustration is lifted from your shoulders.
Ah, another episode with the surprisingly intriguing music in the background. How nice. Also, 5 minutes, and seconds... I see. Wonder what time you'll be going for next.
I buy old used phones, the best one i've had was the LG-G3, good size, rugged plastic bezels, card slot, removable battery, only bad thing was the wobbling when you use it on a flat surface. Sadly it died from some kind of losing signal and boot looping issue, maybe that was the custom rom I installed, maybe water damage, but it was a sad day nonetheless.
I used a Oneplus 7 Pro for a few years and it was probably one of the best phone's I've ever used. It doesn't have as good a battery life as your current phone, but it's very fast and has a really nice camera. It's gotten pretty cheap on the secondhand market. I'm currently using an iPhone SE because it matches with my needs for a phone, it's the first Apple product I've ever owned so it's been weird but fun. Not for everyone, but I don't need a phone for that much and it gives a good experience for what I use it for. Surprisingly, it has faster music decoding on its CPU than my Oneplus 7 Pro by a long shot, for such a cheap price lol.
I got a oneplus nord right when it came out and I feel that it's been a good midrange option. As you said, it's a compromise, but it does everything I need it to do without issues.
I find myself vastly more interested in this series after you've stopped branding it in the title and stopped numbering it. It now feels like I can just go ahead and watch the new video, without needing to go back and watch the prior 6. I'm sure I'll enjoy this now!
There´s an app in the f-droid store called AccA, which has a bunch of features to extend the battery life. It´s not very user friendly since you have to go the secound tab 'profile' and edit everything there, but it has a nice set of features. They´re pretty much self explanatory. The only tip I can give is to set the max voltage to 4,050 mV. The app does require root access. It´s probably aware in other appstores like the play store as well.
the Samsung galaxy xcover pro has a huge removable battery. came out in 2020 I think or 2019 though the camera is not as detailed as I would like, it still takes alright photos, since I mainly use my good camera if I wanted to take any serious photos.
i never actually paid attention about phone battery, but now i got myself mi 10t lite with almost 5000 mAh and ability to fast charge, im super happy with the amount of battery life i get from it. in light use i can easily get 2 days of usage. and when battery is low, i can charge it to 100% in about half of hour. amazing
I had the same situation. Wanted to buy a Samsung Galaxy a51 because I had an excellent Samsung Galaxy a5 2016 before. But then I saw a guy in the store being consulted by an employee. The customer was dreaming of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro and the employee told him, it has the best price-performance ratio. In the end I bought that Xiaomi after ambitiously researching every single detail of it. It was the best choice and I totally agree, having a lasting battery again is a great feeling.
My experience with phones is very similar, except without the flip flop. I had the pixel 1 as my first proper smart phone back in 2016 (pretty late I know), but by summer 2019 the battery was completely unusable, and I decided to pick up the 3a, and to be honest I'm really happy with it still. The camera is still great, the battery still lasts a day+ (although I took much better care of it), and my only complaint is that it can be a bit slow these days.
I had the Pixel (non-XL) used too and experienced the same struggle. Though I read at some Google support site that I ccould send that phone in and get a registered dealer to change the battery for about 100€. Maybe that's a service they're obliged to offer here in Germany. Nonetheless I got the Pixel 3a for an unbeatable price and I was blown away by its battery lasting me over 8 hours of screen on time. At least for the first 6 months. I'm now over a year in and I still manage to get over 5 to 6 hours of screen on time including at least an hour of UA-cam time. And, to sum it all up, it's got the sweet, sweet Pixel camera magic inside...
i dont mind bulky phones in exchange for large battery, all my friends have thin ones with huge screens and they complain that it has to be charged daily, while i have good old xperia xz1 compact with 720p screen and it can go days without charging, and if you disable internet it basically doesnt drain at all, wonderful

smartest man alive (totally opposite) would tell you to buy to a actual camera if you want to take photos, but then you'd can go ramble with him about how a phone has more use than a bloody camera if i want to do more than just take pictures of a rock
I had a similiar change of opinions regarding smartphones.. although in the software department. My first smartphone was a motorola moto g3, one of the main reasons I chose it was that it had "stock" android. At that time I really believed that any smartphone with any custom android skin was bad. However when the time to change phones change came I could not find any phones with stock android in my price range so i ended up buying a samsung phone which had a software completely opposite to stock android, however I like the phone and now stock android won't be high on my list for my next one. I realized that I liked stock android bcoz I thought the extra software features which custom android skin had were all gimmicks and of no use but I ended up liking and using these extra features in my samsung phone. The thing with smartphones is that you often end up liking or getting used to the phone you have.
Remember when a phones camera going double digit was fancy ? yeah. We have become so accustomed to all of those old tools and devices being shoved into a single thing that fits in our pockets that we are beginning to expect too much.
I am going through the same thing right now. Having considered Samsung and Apple, the phone thats more interesting to me is the Asus Zenfone. Less gamery than the Rog but with a nice one camera system for both selfie and backside.
Well i was expecting some sort of Nokia "flip" phone, especially when you started talking about battery life. Ngl though, what you showed seems like qual product that i may find useful in my next phone research.
It's quite the shame but alot of the newer phones have these crazy saturated/contrasty photos. Fortunately, you can smack the Pixel's camera software onto your phone! There's a website with ports for the camera on the internet, Celso in the URL or something. Also my current phone has worse battery than my previous one, despite having a 4500mah battery compared to my old one's 3350 >:(
wow! those pixel camera photo's lookt great! though i completely agree with you with the change, seeing 30% battery and thinking, great off to work instead of stessing because you didn't charge it at night is way better then a good camera. Hoppefully i wont change my opinion on this in 10 years when i don't have any good pictures of my life from now....
For anyone wondering, the reason he couldn't get his battery replaced likely had nothing to do with water damage. The screens on the pixel series phones are quite fragile, and to get at the battery you have to remove it. Likely they just didn't want to do the work because the price to fix them is prohibitive for either the consumer or the person doing the repair. When I did phone repair, we would just tell you that water damage meant you couldn't get a warranty with your repair.
its what im doing rn, always have a power bank and i probably should get a new phone but it can still use this one, it just always has to be on low brightness and connected to a charging source or itll loose charge
I would also brought rog2 just for the big battery and fast chip. But i really need an ip rating and a good chunky bumper case. I got S20 Ultra (Exynos) and it is so bad for the price. Battery life is so damn weak and it has connection problems in phone networks.
So far I've managed to avoid being dragged into a frequent update cycle with phones, and I really don't want to get into a mode where I discard phones before I absolutely have to. My first phone was the Nokia 3510i, which lasted me about a decade. After that, I got the N8 and it lasted me another 5 years or so, despite me dropping it in a lake and on the ground numerous times. I'm on my third phone now, a OnePlus 5T, and I won't replace it until it stops functioning like the other two. My fear is that phones are being made with more and more planned obsolescence and I'll get dragged into that wasteful cycle whether I want to or not, but I'll do my damnest to avoid it as much as possible.
The new title format is really good.

smartest man alive (totally opposite) would tell you to buy to a actual camera if you want to take photos, but then you'd can go ramble with him about how a phone has more use than a bloody camera if i want to do more than just take pictures of a rock
4:55 That's one awsome looking foggy forest
I am going through the same thing right now. Having considered Samsung and Apple, the phone thats more interesting to me is the Asus Zenfone. Less gamery than the Rog but with a nice one camera system for both selfie and backside.
the song is so good
Well i was expecting some sort of Nokia "flip" phone, especially when you started talking about battery life. Ngl though, what you showed seems like qual product that i may find useful in my next phone research.
OnePlus 7 Pro would be a good next one if you want to save some dosh when your refresh comes along.
1:26 I think you mean "Hopefully someday they'll go back to having replaceable batteries for phones."
love you phil!
It's quite the shame but alot of the newer phones have these crazy saturated/contrasty photos. Fortunately, you can smack the Pixel's camera software onto your phone! There's a website with ports for the camera on the internet, Celso in the URL or something.
Also my current phone has worse battery than my previous one, despite having a 4500mah battery compared to my old one's 3350 >:(
Phlorp
Pixel gang. Watching on a Pixel 4a 5G UW. Love it.
wow! those pixel camera photo's lookt great! though i completely agree with you with the change, seeing 30% battery and thinking, great off to work instead of stessing because you didn't charge it at night is way better then a good camera. Hoppefully i wont change my opinion on this in 10 years when i don't have any good pictures of my life from now....
Love the titles
you're getting in the rhythm, lets gooo
We did have replacable phone batteries,
now we don't.
Recently settled on a pre owned galaxy s8+ and I'm not disappointed
1:50 "Im yet to Phillip on my belief" :)
Video ends just as math class starts
