Forgot about the channel? Yeah we did too 😬. We still think of this channel as a place for fun weird things that don't fit anywhere else, so we're trying on a new name and some new types of content. It's still our 2nd channel, but hopefully we can start having more fun with it. Hope you stick around 👍
I got caught up in the obvious excitement you share. Not to be offensive but I don’t care what ya call the channel because, again, your excitement is contagious. As a modeler myself, I enjoy building things. I think of all the electronics we will be adding to MY model that your building! (Roomba look out!😁). I just have sooo many wonderful ideas we will be adding to MY model as your building it! 😁 Seriously, there are really not enough people like us left anymore. I can see that it is a very expensive endeavor too. When you get ready to add the electronics, I’m thinking lidar to keep us from other objects. I have an old electric wheel chair for locomotion. We have a standby i9 core for the processor. I’m sure it will have no problem processing both the remote control part and the onboard logics that we will be using on MY model that your building. Many many variable RGB, LEDs for those wonderful variable color modes. We will not forget the small arms that R2 has on his front panel. I haven’t finished working on the thrusters yet. I had to replace the burnt part of the garage but it’s fine it’s ok, the CNC didn’t get completely ruined. I did have to replace that one arm though, oh, and a small part of the roof. The fire department got there fairly quickly. (Note to self- NO more hydrazine used in the thruster!) I’ve worked out the frequency for the mini drone located in the lower panel near the skirt in back! It will be in the GHz range because R2’s remotes are in that range. I’m thinking you will be proud of me on this one. We will just kinda skip over the garage part tho. Thanks for sharing my friend! 😉
I just love how nerdy you are. Your Tron style room and then the R2-D2. that wall there that looks like the thing R2-D2 adjusts in the movie. I love the video of the gaming table. Just all of it makes me smile. I love this stuff. It's kind of like my own life. I love woodworking, electronics, 3D printing etc. So I guess that's why I enjoy this channel so much. Oh and I love Sci-Fi
I'm 3d printing my R2 and lost interest in it and haven't done anything in over a year with it. Your video has given me that spark again. Love the video !
WOW!! that is amazingly accurate. So much attention to detail. If I could afford to make one I doubt it could ever match your attention to detail. Love your content keep up the good work.
UA-cam needs a ❤ button because this video deserves all the love, great job! I've wanted to build an R2 for many years now but lack of tools, money and time have been holding me back. Mark my words, someday I WILL actually build one of these.
Seeing as this is probably years of your life (and many thousands of dollars..) condensed into 1.5 hrs--fantastic job and thanks for bringing us along on the journey!
9:50 Okay, saying it's an expensive build but then saying you aren't going to go over the actual cost is a tactic we've all used with our significant others when we know they would freak out if they knew the actual cost... man up buddy! 😏 Seriously, though, it's an insanely cool build and you did a fantastic job, I'm sort of jealous (a lot, actually) at how much fun your going to have showing him off!
Awesome job. love the sounds. Suggested Upgrades. The oil "Leak" thingy. The computer terminal rotating connection arm. A projector in the head? A rotating parabol disc on top of head. MORE sounds :) Greetings from Denmark. Keep up the good ideas. :)
Amazing project. Man looks so real ('cause it is!). Less music cranking would be nice though, but that is a complaint I have about most videos, so don't (or do) listen to me! Can't wait to see what you do next.
Great job, and fun to watch the timelapse. I have to say, what kind of maniac taught you to spray paint?!? I mean, it seems to work for you, but I don't know how. If I did that, there would be runs everywhere! Cool project, and thanks for sharing!
Cool modern model kit type project using CRC but functional depending on goals of the end result. Very nice. Thank you for making my day. I also enjoyed you telling interested folk your R2D2 resources. I also enjoyed your problem solving as assembly didn't work as expected or according to plan. Your work around were interesting especially as one fix led to a cacade further issues and further solutions. It a was great following your progress in this one video.
Upgrade sugestión: put a dlp projector (like a wanbo T2 max) in to the main heads holo projector, and extend the ports in to one of the service bays, it would be so awesome!
In the future, when welding aluminum, wear a vented masking system. I worked as a general machinist. Our welding guy stated that aluminum gives off a toxic gas as it’s heated and therefor you don’t want to inhale the stuff. You have the net; look it up!🤣✌️🤘🇨🇦
That R2 unit you've built is awesome! I think if it were my droid I'd have to try and figure out how to add an onboard AI to automate and allow R2 to be R2.
Instead of using silly putty, while painting my Warhammer minis I use Blutac. It’s great at filling in smaller spots and keeping things covered. And it’s easy to remove and gets somewhat more sticky with itself when dirtied.
I’ve been having a terrible day and can’t thank you enough for this video. It kept me sane when I’ve been losing the plot with my MacBook that keeps crashing. Thank you for an amazing video! Definitely subscribing.
Diresta had an excellent point: your graphics and logo game are on a whole other level! This where you're putting the "Is it too late?" Series that you talked about a while back?
Seriously, Dude! Where were you when George Lucas was producing Star Wars! Oh wait you were just a youngster like me....😁. Man, George Lucas and Industrial Light and Magic would be very proud of you and amazed for what you have done. Sure it was expensive (and most likely more money will be spent on upgrades and finishing) but it is Awesome and Amazing just like you! So after R-2 D-2, you need C-3PO and I believe you could make him and he work and walk. I do have some suggestions if you don't mind.... Where the "foot" attaches to the leg put a brass or aluminum bearing (tube) for the bolt to ride thru. This will stop premature wear of the Styrene plastic hole and any other joints that bolts pass thru the Styrene and you have movement. Another suggestion is where the motor with the small gear turns the head....make two thin aluminum disc that are slightly bigger in diameter than the styrene gear on the motor. Take off the styrene gear, place an aluminum circle plate on the motor, then the plastic gear then another aluminum circle plate so you "sandwich" the little gear and then place the motor back in until the big outer gear merges with the little gear but sandwiched between the two plates. This will increase rigidity and also keep the gear on the motor in place at all time so if he hits a bump it won't cause misalignment between the small gear and the head gear. Make sure the aluminum circles are not so tight that they rub the gears. It's just to be a guide. Also silicone grease makes a great lubricant and does not affect the styrene. Until the next video take care and have fun!
It's a good project until you have to install and tweak the rockets on R2's arms. Getting them to pop out correctly, and then getting the trim for flight control down can take weeks.
If I were gunna make an astromech, I would make it 100% functional, and likely it would weigh about 800 pounds finished. BUT... It would be able to ACTUALLY WELD stuff [as they do in the movie]!
I started the 3d printed project many years ago (mr baddeley's excellant model) But a "left PLA print in the sun to help dry primer" mistake, divorce and several moves meant the (50% printed) project got tossed in the trash. Maybe one day i will try again
You realize that your methodology of using 3D printed parts and exterior metal is the future of manufacturing? In space exploration, resources won't necessarily be scant but they will most certainly need to be efficiently used. The trick to using expanding Loom is shrink tube. You shrink the end that you're starting at, which gives you something to pull against. Then you can shrink another piece on the finishing side where you can cut it even.
👍👍👍👍👍 The Asian mail order websites sell real weather balloons. They are much larger and probably more durable. Surprisingly, they are not terribly expensive. IIRC, maybe $15USD.
Completely random question. I haven't seen much CNC/laser/water jet work on your channel lately. Is this a decision to not show them or you just don't use them much? I love them all (I use them myself) and I am aware of the discussion that some people don't, so I am just curious.
I still use the CNC router and laser, not the water jet. I only have so much space. Things have been in flux as I have been moving around my shop. Laser is in place, CNC will be soon. 👍
Trying to save a few pounds on play station 3 controllers, lol this is thousands of dollers project my guess over $5000 under $8000 and that's just parts! No labour😂
I feel like this video could have been made with way less guitar. Why do UA-cam videos have to follow the Discovery Channel model? Your process is way more interesting than generic guitar.

Great job!! Massive respect for your tennacity...

I thought the same thing ...
One must “key” metal before painting. That is, a light sanding. Even with an etch primer, always lightly sand.
beautiful efforts but the 250k price tag by the time you get all of the tools, time and effort into it
ya got a passion for the droids for sure!!!!
That is awesome !
Bravo!
Tesla is iealous of them panels gaps you have beautifully made!
This is cool. I think if i was gonna make a droid I would make Bd-1, and have it have some special features in the eye area.
Very cool, I build one out of wood back In the 80's, I am wanting to build one out of aluminum.

@iltms Nice Job! Now you have to age it...Artoo is never fully clean.
😉
Very nice! Maybe cut back on the whole 'rock music montage clips' a little?
Yeah, music is a little much.
Yeah the music kills it for me 😖
You should give it some weathering so it does not look brand new like it just rolled out of the r2-d2 factory.
Why?? For once, I want to see a brand new R2D2! I'm sick and tired of weathered, dirty-look models. Why can't we have brand new models for once?🙄
If I were gunna make an astromech, I would make it 100% functional, and likely it would weigh about 800 pounds finished.
BUT...
It would be able to ACTUALLY WELD stuff [as they do in the movie]!
you should take your r2 to disneyland.
What glue and activator are you using for your 3D prints?
1:17:55 - yes, inches are confusing. Just be a normal person and use millimeters instead of feet and fingers
It would be pretty cool if he was a functioning patrol droid and tool drawer with manipulatable fingers and could use a screwdriver.
I started the 3d printed project many years ago (mr baddeley's excellant model) But a "left PLA print in the sun to help dry primer" mistake, divorce and several moves meant the (50% printed) project got tossed in the trash. Maybe one day i will try again

👍👍👍👍👍 The Asian mail order websites sell real weather balloons. They are much larger and probably more durable. Surprisingly, they are not terribly expensive. IIRC, maybe $15USD.
Best I can do is a NXT ... that tries not to blow itself ... with emphasis on tries
Just curious how long it took to match the blue. Mainly because R2 is finished in machinist's blue, because they had that lying around.
Would love to know the cost.
OOOOOOOO!!! I want your brain AND tools!!!🤣🤣🤣✌️🤘🇨🇦
Wow.

What’s the music at 31:13?

How can I build without cnc?
Can you fit a person inside like the real R2-D2?
What about R2s computer probe?
BEATS 3D PRINTING THE WHOLE BLOODY THING.......
he needs a sweving tray!
Eventually you can give him a AI system so he runs himself
Half way through, REALLY hoping it can make the scream like noise and the beep boop noises
... Why would you want the paint _not_ to chip off?
I assumed it would be integrated w chatgpt
"matt white" - holding a can clearly labelled "satin" - heh.. great build though
Work in METRIC M8 ! Like the rest of the modern world !! 😂... why didn't you use a hub motor wheel ??
Modern maybe but with no longevity if all you want to do is get into a scrape with ➡🐻

18:35 That's Satin broski. That's not even close to the same as Matte.
so I have a question .. if there is anything you can go back and change or redo ..what and Why?
In Latin America the nickname is Arturito, because r2 d2 in spanish sounds like thi name r2d2= Arturito
do not skip leg day
how dare you make this the last video on R2 I want to see you add in more.

Turn the volume down
so, next is AI?
Brilliant job, took you longer to make a R2, Than Disney took to destroy.
You didn’t put the jet packs in. Sorry to be cruel.
no r2d2 penis? the thing that comes out so he can talk to other computers
How does the saying go...if you need to ask how much then you can't afford it......
