Shorn of its subtlety, mystery and nuance by the quickened pace with which Dylan leans in to his vocal, what is left? A riotous, high energy, stomping romp of a song. It's not better for this approach, just different. It remains compelling though! What a great show finale it makes.
+This Is Home! Agreed :) I read that Bob found this song exhausting when playing it live.. And you can see why.. It's just such a fierce and intense song.. I love all the live versions I've found, as the sax player goes nuts when it gets to the instrumental sections. Much better than the "Street Legal" studio version! :) Davey
DEAR This Is Home! and Mr. David Hughes: I AGREE WITH EVERYTHING YOU BOTH SAY. I SAW HIM DO IT LIVE IN 1978 AS AN ENCORE !! IT WAS A GREAT CONCERT BUT EVERYONE & HIS MOTHER WANTED TO HEAR THAT SONG, AS "ST. LEGAL" HAD JUST COME ABOUT A MONTH BEFORE !! IT WAS STUNNING !! ME & MY BAND PLAYED A GIG IN WOODSTOCK IN LATE '77 &THE OTHER GROUP HAD A GUITARIST NAMED BILLY CROSS -- WE GOT ALONG WELL -- & HE TURNED OUT TO BE THE GUITARIST ON THAT SONG/ALBUM !! THANK YOU BOTH FOR HAVING EXCELLENT TASTE -- RITCHIE CROSS
My favorite Dylan song, along with ‘Where are you tonight’ also off 'Street Legal’... I kind of like the fact that he has pretty much never played them live again, adds to the mystique.
This song is otherwordly, but Dylan sounds like he's really hurting himself straining his voice like that. The subtlety of the studio version is all but lost when he belts out every single line.
Always wonderful lyrics from Bob Dylan, but can I be the only person who thinks that he absolutely destroys some of his best songs by playing them live? The poetry in the original recorded version is so totally lost in this?
Rolling Ormond only an idiot would leave a dylan show.Alot of people want him to play what he was playing in the early 60.I dont even know how many times Ive seen him I saw one bad show and it was still worth going.During the 70 people didnt want to hear his rel, songs Im an athiest but he poured his soul in to those songs they are beautiful. Most people are assholes all you have to do is look at the fact that our next president is going to be hillary Clinton.Only about 10 percnt of the populationdoesnt deserve the world we live in my heart goes out to them. What period are you talking Ive never seen anone walk out.Ive seen alot of amazed people walk out after it was over.

His greatest song. Strange he never does it in concert, as it is a fan favorite. Could it have anything to do with "Christian Companion?"
It's a stunning, pulverizing piece of work. Staggering that he hasn't sang it since 1978. Great final verse, but they are ALL great verses!

Live version it´s wonderfull but studio version it´s celestial . Doesn´t exist anything better that studio version.

Amazon has it on cd, vinyl and I think perhaps other formats. Good luck to whoever might get lucky!!
Sad recording of "Changing of The Guards" song, not sure if it's authentic.
you can bet your bottom dollar,it´s Bob. He´s on fire and sounds great.

No, he absolutely demolishes his catalogue onstage, especially today.
Rolling Ormond he takes risk sometimes it the most beautiful thing you ever heard.
M Tolstoy Maybe two seconds out of a show; the rest awful (most of the audience leaves early).

M Tolstoy His voice sounds like dogshit now, he destroys his classic songs as he 'sings,' who wants to hear that?
