  • Since his initial sessions with Alex, David has become increasingly aware of his inner critic but is still struggling to defend and disengage from it. This week, the focus is on David’s untapped anger and frustration, and how that is contributing to how he talks to himself.

So sorry David for the recent loss of your father through these most difficult times. Also surviving strokes at a very young age would be very traumatic for you to endure. It would be very understandable that any one of us experiencing these traumas would be angry. From your therapy sessions with Alex I witness a very likable human grappling with very strong human emotions of grief from significant loss.( you a not alone) I find practicing self compassion mindfulness and connecting with the rhythm of my breath is a refuge for my anger and loss. and is very helpful for cultivating self compassion, This self compassion drives away the harsh inner critic's and makes life so much more enjoyable. because you have reclaimed your power back. All the best David on your healing journey, you are on a great path.

Working on ourselves is not easy. That is why some people never even start.

I can Identify a lot with Davids anger, I feel always a little bit angry or a lot, and no Therapist ever ask me about this , I'm kind of surprised, it kind of hit me like that. I learn more here then years on couch.

Thank you David. There was a lightbulb moment for me - internalised anger gives energy to the inner critic. This made total sense to the scientist in me - it's that old Law of Conservation of Energy! As someone with a huge fear of conflict, my instinct is to swallow anger as opposed to voicing it. I've noticed that my inner critic is very active at the moment, at the same time as I'm dealing with a lot of frustrations. I'm going to try to healthily digest these frustrations/anger and see how that affects the activity of the inner critic. Thank you so much Alex for another fab episode.

David is such a genuine lovable man. We all need to allow the anger to be instead of pushing it away there is deep grief beneath and tears will slowly heal.

Thank you David for sharing your story. Emotional regulation is so hard to tackle. Question for Alex - where do you start to manage your emotions?

I can relate to so much of this, I'm mid 50s brought up in Scotland, the anger from injustices of the world eat away at me from simple next door neighbours constantly breaching lockdown to how a semi intelligent person could ever vote for Trump or not see through his constant lies. There is also a parallel to the clip of Katie's video about protecting your family and friends from injustices and almost looking for situations in which you can prove you will protect them no matter what. I find it hard to park these thoughts, makes sleeping tricky sometimes.

This is exactly me, and lockdown has made the anger so much worse. Looking forward to the next video to steal some techniques maybe... 😉
