    Peter says: I love the Springboks and rugby is one of my favourite sports. Although as a sports journalist I am supposed to remain neutral, I always like to point out that before I became a professional, I was just a big fan! I hold a Masters Degree in International Journalism so at least you know I should be able to ask a good question or two! My dream is to do this UA-cam Channel permanently. Yeah!! Always lovely to hear these stories from our 1995 heroes. I'd have to go back and check but I think that makes it 13 interviews with 95 winners on this channel now. Cheers as always for the comment, Seamus!

      Bulls legend but I would make him a Bok legend too. What a combo he formed with Mark Andrews too! A formidable duo.

    Solid middle of lineout lock. Remember Otto when he came to Bulls (1993) as a flanker , ended up going on SA Barbarians side at end of year. Toured NZ in 1994 ahead of Drikus Hattingh , who was first choice at provincial level. I believe he was selected ahead of more dominant experienced players in 1995 because of his ability to play flank. Hattingh was better lock but had long history of discipline issues. Otto and Andrews combo was good one.

    • @frontrowrugby
      @frontrowrugby  9 місяців тому +1

      I must be honest I don't actually remember him playing as a flanker but great memory on your part, Nunu. Perhaps the Pieter-Steph Du Toit of his time!
      I remember Drikus - a hard man of note but as you say there were some disciplinary issues. Otto and Andrews made for a great combination and we struggled after they were dropped/retired until Victor and Bakkies emerged.
      Great guy, great guest and a great player! Thanks as always for the comment. Always nice hearing from you.

      @@frontrowrugby it is a SA thing , having a big lock playing flank as a strong option at tail of the lineout. Hannes Strydom played flank in his early years with NTvl. As did Steve Atherton famously in 1990 CC Final. Likes of Drikus and Adri would have played more tests if they were disciplined!. Believe young guys like Otto and Robbie Brink were picked in 95 partially because they brought no baggage.

    • @frontrowrugby
      @frontrowrugby  9 місяців тому +1

      Yes, that's right! Drikus and Adri were probably just products of their time. Great players but as you say susceptible to the sin bin!
      I also think young guns like Otto and Brink were picked in 95 because they would be good squad players without rocking the boat. Clearly Kitch's plan worked!

      Thanks bud! Ah so it was Ireland at Loftus, not Tucuman. Nevertheless that Tucuman match was brutal!
      It's my pleasure and I'm so happy you enjoyed the video.
      Yes, let's see how it goes next week with a kiwi - but not just any old kiwi - the first captain to lift the Webb Ellis Cup! All part of my Rugby World Cup coverage which will start on Sunday. I'm hoping it will all have a very positive impact on the channel.
      PS I actually could not believe it when Krynauw told me he was a fan of the channel. At first I thought he was just saying so to be nice but then it became very obvious that he knew my channel quite well as he started referencing other interviews on the channel. Incredible stuff and what a compliment!

    Hi Peter, great interview again ( I beamed like a proud relative when he mentioned he was a fan of your channel. It is evident that he does actual follow the channel by the comments he made. It is so well deserved you make such great content)
    I was such an Otto fan even though he was a Bull. I had such a chuckle “I could have scored more but Frik du Preez was my hero” what an absolute legend this man is.
    I must at admit the fact that he had nice things to say about Carel made me develop a slight crush on him 🤣
    This feels like a man who genuinely takes an interest in the people around him. What great advice as well! There needs to be life after rugby.
    I love the trivia section of the channel. My answers are hit or miss but I learn/recall so much from them.
    Thanks again for the great content Peter. These videos are such a great decompressor for me after a particularly challenging day.

      Thank you for those lovely words, Rif! I can't describe how chuffed I was when Krynauw told me he watched this channel. At first I thought, "Yeah right. He's just saying that." But then it became really obvious that he does watch it! What a wonderful endorsement.
      He is a lovely guy and he was a tremendous player back in the day - even though as you say he played for a certain team in Pretoria! hahaha ...
      I'm going to try to get Carel on this show in Year II (by the way, tomorrow is this channel's first anniversary - whoo!) It's only right that we give Carel a platform. It'll be so interesting to hear what he has to say about those days.
      Glad you love the trivia section. A couple of people moaned about it last week so I decided to put up a poll. As it turns out those who don't like it make up less than 20% so sorry, it's staying.
      Glad these videos can help you decompress!

      @@frontrowrugby happy anniversary! Even though I have only recently discovered your channel, I feel like I have devoured the content and therefore can be considered an OG fan😃it was pretty evident that Krynauw is a fan. I can now say I have two things in common with Krynauw: we both love Carel and Front Row Rugby.
      I would love for you to interview Carel. As I said I have had the privilege of meeting him once and he was the loveliest man and still very handsome for a gentleman of more advanced years.
      I cannot believe you are giving the ABs a platform 😪never mind I will be here to hate watch next week 🤣

      Love what you have in common with Krynauw! Whoo!
      Yeah, my aim for Year II is to get Mr Markgraaff, Carel, Nick Mallett and Harry Viljoen if possible as far as the coaches go.
      But first, World Cup coverage begins next week ... with a AB - haha! As it turns out he is the only All Black that will be on the show and you'll see soon enough he's actually a nice guy too.

      I also think Year I has been a great success. I am very pleased with the way things have turned out. I have big plans for the second year. Let's see how it goes!

      That's a very good assessment, Wilbur. I didn't even think of that! Great point you make. Clearly Kitch was trying to introduce more height in the lineout so he was looking at an alternative to Rudolf Streauli at that stage. Why not Krynauw?
