Took my 2019 F150 with 3.5 Ecoboost in to shop a week ago for harsh shift in 8th gear. Technician noticed the rattle too. 55k miles on it. Got truck in to shop 5 days before power train warranty expired. Warranty is covering transmission and replacing cam phaser. 😊

my 2013 Eco has been doing it for more than four years. I used to worry about it all the time but now I don't care anymore, I sleep fine. At nearly 300k, it still runs fine and I bought a cemetery plot for it when it dies!

Instantly loved the entire way you present your videos, the clarity, and the details including the follow up vids. Not sure I need to subscribe but I will subscribe to you just because you're doing such a great job. This video helped me better understand the problem with my 2017 expedition. Please keep up the great work.

I have a 2013 3.5L and it started out with the rattle on start up, then untreated I lost all power at lower RPMs and lower gears. Dealership said $4000 to replace phasers or drive it into the ground. That was 3 years ago. As of last week… the rattle is now permanent as long as the engine is running and speeds up as the RPMs increase.

Did you continue to drive it with the rattle?
I have been sitting on my 15 Exp for a while afraid to use it but not wanting to drop $4k into it.
We did replace the solenoids which were making a knocking noise, that's gone but the constant tick isn't. 😢

@@ssgtdunn8 yes, I took it to the dealership and was advised to not bother dropping the 4K into it (it needed valve replacement, and some electrical work adding another 3K for 7K total). They said drive it til it dies. I did. It died 3 months ago. Traded it in and got 4K for it.

My 2018 3.5 f150 just started doing this, I’ve heard many solutions. I’m not sure if my warranty is sti active seeing as I’m at 85,000 miles. But I bought the truck at 69,000. I’m going to be trying some methods before I replace the cam phasers.

I’m curious, is it generally the bank 2 intake phaser that you see as the one going out? I ask because that was the one that was failing for me. Luckily I replaced them quickly and didn’t have this happen

@@BarboursAutoHelp Appreciate your quick response and I know you're not trying to get more business with these videos. The shops around me unfortunately are not well experienced with this repair, which obviously requires a lot of parts pulled off the engine. I'll just live with it. Again, great information you are sharing- super helpful.

At what point should one be concerned about the cam phasers and consider replacing them? I heard this rattle I believe for the first time on my '17 Expy last week (105k mi). It gets driven nearly every day and I haven't heard it since that one time.

  • @aj1984p

Soo there is a recall that your supposed to do which is just some programming but if the noise has already started than you need to replace the cam phasers.

It would be a great idea to keep oil pressure in the cam phasers, say like some kind of check valve.

  • @yodaddy82daddy70
    @yodaddy82daddy70 5 місяців тому +1

So i read on a few forums that if you get your oil changed and dont use the FoMoCo filters it can cause the rattle. Aparently there is a valve or something inside the filter that sits on the top end of Fords filter but name brands put it at the bottom which allows the oil to leak down. Have you confirmed that this may resolve the issue?
Some commenters have said that they put the Ford filter on and it stopped

@@CraigAnderson-hx3jh Yes ! I changed my oil to Ow-30 and a K&N filter , always park with my front end being lower than my rear, I do the long start when cold , and no rattle problem as long as I make sure all those things are happening.
No rattle at all on a warm start with K&N filter and oil that seems easier to get up to pressure .

@davidanderson5034 seems to be right. It sounds like an oil leakdown issue. The diesels also have issues with this, different symptoms but a shared root cause. Would a properly placed check valve solve this?

What about running thicker oil like 15W30? 2011 F150 Ecoboost. I have been doing the gas pedal only for a while and it works but i have to crank it until i see the oil temp gauge register a reading and even a little time past. Still sometimes it gets a little rattle. Now it is throwing P0365, P0369, P0014 codes.

    • @BarboursAutoHelp

A ticker oil would be bad for the rest of the engine. 15w-30 is just too thick.

I think it’s ford problem they designed this engine it sounds to me like the oil is leaking down. I remember the old engines lifters would leak down and the rattle like this.they need to put a better oil pump in these engines after all they designed them.

2015 f150 lariat here… i have a squeeking noise that revolves in 10 seconds and only happens on cold morning start. Its not a rattle though more of a squeak like maybe a serpentine belt but a mechanic told me it might be the cam phasers and something about a tcb code…. If it is cam phasers does ford cover this repair under warranty?

My sister's 2015 Expedition (3.5L EcoBoost, just hit 150,000 miles) has been making this noise if it sits for a few days. Would adding a stabilizer to the oil at the next change maybe possibly help at all while we save up for the repair? (We will replace the phasers ASAP, but it will take us a while to financially get there.)

Ok my 2013 ford f150 3.5 echoboost recently made that cam phaser rattle noise on cold start up for 6 days in a row! Then It just stopped it’s bn 6 weeks after the noise an it doesn’t make that noise anymore it starts an runs fine! Is this normal for cam phaser failure?

I bought this super clean, low mileage 2011 f150 for $1,500 (in 11/24) that exhibits VCT bleed down and transmission lead-frame resistance failures.
It turns out, a person can buy a running 460c and operable c6 in my area (80905) for cheaper than the repair costs..... I'll update this comment regardless of decision.
