i never liked him, i thought he was an arrogant prick, which he admits to having been back then. never thought i would genuinely like him one day - but now i do. he's grown up and he's grown a lot of humility and it suits him well. good for him. i like that i can like him now.

@@alwaysxhappiness I would think it meant that "twist" in the lyric was originally "midst" which makes complete sense but perhaps a mispronunciation added a surreal touch with the foresight of the advent of the internet that almost 30 years since the release of the tune would garner debate as to the meaning of said words .

I’ve been a huge Robbie fan for many years. And TT also. Appreciate Gary’s talent and confidence. Totally disagree with people, who try to insult him on these terms - being confident is not bad especially when you’re supposed to be a worldwide famous musician. It’s one of the most important things in the business 🤷🏻♀️
After analyzing their stories I came to a conclusion, that Robbie’s only fault was being too emotional. He was just a kid back then. And he had no time to rest and look back on his mistakes. Of course he won the battle, he became 10 times more successful than Gary in commercial aspects, and he also is an iconic entertainer. Gary has always been a talented songwriter, but not good in promoting himself. His attitude isn’t that ‘rockstarish’ in general.
But what do we have in common? Both went through it all and became closer to each other, because they matured. I’m happy about that. Hope guys will make some more collaborations soon - their voices sound brilliant together ❤

In their time, I was a late teenager at college. We hated Take That. We were into Oasis, GNR, Pantera, The Doors, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, etc. we had a reunion a few years ago. What did we listen to over a few beers? ‘The Flood’. It’s a banger. 😂

I was in my 30's [loving many of the same bands as you] when Take That became very famous. I did really like some of their songs at the time but still, it took me many years to recognize what a bloody great pop group they were.

Its so interesting to hear about all this now because I was a massive Take That fan from the begining. So growing up and seeing all these albums and number 1 songs, i didnt realise how much was going on bts. I love how far these guys have all come and how they can now be so honest about everything. I also ove how Gary can say with confidence how good he was because he really was the one who wrote everything. I dont think it was untill they got back together that the others started to help with the writing.
Happy that Gary had his redemption arc and is now where he deserves to be.

IN THE DOCUMENTARY THAT ROBBIE MADE FOR NETFLIX, HE SAYS THAT FOR A LONG TIME HE FELT JEALOUSY FOR GARY, THAT HE DID NOT KNOW WHY HE DID IT BUT IT WAS SOMETHING FRUSTRATING, AND THAT HE FELT BAD BECAUSE OF HOW IDIOT HE WAS AGAINST GARY , IT IS GOOD TO KNOW THAT PEOPLE HEAL THEIR HEARTS, AND THAT NOW EVERYONE IS WELL WITH EACH OTHER....

Robert needed to get away from take that, they gave him the hunger for what he wanted, but the day he left and a good rest and think boom we got ROBBIE WILLIAMS the biggest and best singer songwriter we we had ever seen take that who. Time and reflection has made Gary even better. When we’re 20 we’re all a little bit ego filled and naturally as we grow older and actually live life and go through things, we change just a bit. He’s like a fine wine though Gary. He gets better with age.

Gary is just a brilliant creative composer and songwritter, he can also do pretty well as a performer, has a good voice, but his true brilliance comes out in the songwritting and composing, he did for himself, as a solo artist, for Take That, and for many other artists who people dont even dream of, even movies, he did it all. he is a great person and carried Take That on his shoulders for long, more than he should have, the others should have helped him more, too much pressure on just one guy, nevertheless, he remained till this day as a true, good person, a humble and down to earth guy, friend of his friend.
As a gigging musician for the last 40 years, and still going strong in 2 bands now (playing Beautiful Days festival and five others, later this year) I have followed Take That since they returned and have seen them live (two times) on each of the tours. You have to understand the Take That band and that Mike and Milton (and others) have been together all the way through. Gary is an excellent musician and song writer, for himself and many others, but is he isn't a showman. Robbie is. Their shows now are spectacular, and all three of the remaining members are so humble and appreciative of all they are able to do, and the fans rightly love and respect them for it.
I guess fame is like an addiction. Your development is stunned. You don’t grow personally. You’d think fame is great but in reality it’s a prison. A luxurious prison but so empty. You miss out on life. You live a parallel life. Like Hollywood stars. Totally detached from the real world.

Gary is just a classy guy ...he's aged the best of the lot except for maybe Jason 😊. Love that he's still with his wife and family and I think of how he wrote 'Nobody else' for his parents and hope one day its his and dawns song too
Some of take that songs were very popular in France, especially "back for good" and "how deep is yourlove" but we didn't know it was Take That and what is a boys band. 😙

My favorite was always and still is Robbie, and it was basically because I love "bad boys" when he left the band I was sad, but oh boy I knew he was going to do big things, and I was not wrong at all!
What did he do bad? He drank and done light drugs for a few weeks? And then in rehab! He will always be a ballat dancer and fat!

It’s sad that we all laughed at his fall from grace. We all love a success story but we also love putting the boot in during their downfall. I think it’s a British thing to really build people up and idolise them but we’re all ready to poke fun at them during their dark times. Gary truly seems like a decent man and I’m glad he’s now classed as a British treasure. I reckon it’s time for a knighthood for him

It is true when he says that he had to fail. When he went solo, it was still Take That, but without the other four guys. Musically, he didn't have much new to offer and he wasn't as charismatic then and came across as too confident. Robbie, on the other hand, had the advantage of doing something different musically, which he couldn't show in Take That. Coupled with his entertainment talent, it's not surprising that he ended up winning the battle between the two.

Yes, well, I love Rob but he owes a big part of his musical success to Guy Chambers. He was the one who helped him do things differently.

Robbie had the closure he needed when they made Progress.

They all knew Jason was going to go almost a year before they announced it. And Rob didn't think it was worth doing anymore if it wasn't the five of them.

@@RolandDeschain1 probably, but Robbie is too mentally unstable. He would have left again at some point, but without any drama since they're all mature now. I have never missed Robbie in the group once they became a foursome, I do miss Jason.

I didn’t get that at all, from what he said.
The point is that he was being honest about how he felt. He did have a massive ego. It’s hard to share that truthfully without using the words that describe that. And the success that came with what he did write essentially.

Rob wanted to leave after the tour, it was the manager who came up with the ultimatum to leave right then or agree to stay. They were expecting him to back down and agree to stay; instead he interpreted it as he was being sacked.

No. Robbie speaks about it in his documentary. It was a mixture of the group and the management didn't want him there because of his drug use and he didn't want to be there either.

Perhaps if someone hadn't badmouthed Mr. Barlow, he would have been much more successful with his second album, one of the best. 😢❤
No, because RW was saying the things other people were thinking. That’s why they stung - they were true. Gary, at the time, was producing his weakest work because he was burnt out. He was producing dated stuff because after 6 years of constant work he had lost touch with popular culture - he was too busy working to go to clubs or gigs himself. And he was selfish and egoistic and entitled because he had been indulged for so long. And he was tight! There’s interviews from that period where he is boasting about it. He just was not self-aware about how he was coming across.
At the end of the day if Gary and Clive Davis had clicked, if they’d found a hit song together and Gary had broken the States, then absolutely nothing that Rob was saying about him in the press here would have made the slightest bit of difference. Because no-one in the US then cared one iota about that stuff.
@@KathyD-24601 Well, the truth is, I didn't know all that, it was just that I read some articles where they talked about "shine" and about their distancing apart from the fact that RW had said that his songs were much better than Mr. Barlow, but now I don't know who to agree with. Maybe the ones that they are fans of years can tell me.
@@marcolopez354 people tend not to dwell on it because they feel bad about the bullying now - which did go way too far, there is no doubt about that. And Rob did end up participating when he was well beyond being justified - but that happened *after* Gary was dropped by his label. It was being kicked when he was down and Rob was hugely successful that really hurt. But in that period in 1996 when Rob was originally nasty about Gaz, he’d had No 1 singles and a No 1 album, he had an American record deal with the legendary Clive Davis, it looked like he was going to be a big success. Rob being mean about him didn’t affect him initially, it was once people started to see that what he said rang true that other people picked it up. And Gary did dismiss Rob’s talent at the time(it’s why he hesitates when he is asked about it), he did criticise him a lot for his drink and drug problems in an unpleasantly hypocritical way, and he did sit in interviews and boast about writing off his expenses against his taxes.
It was Gary’s second album that flopped hard - musically it was totally out of step with what was happening in 1999. And by then he has just completely lost his confidence.
Gary is very open about this now.
@@marcolopez354 I don't think you need pick side at this point. Robbie definitely didn't need to be such an asshole and shame him publically, which he apologized for several times. And Gary admitted that Robbie was basically a child when they started and all the adults, Gary included, should've paid more attention to him, especially when he started spiraling and doing alcohol and drugs later. They made up years ago, both of them admitting and apologizing for their part in the whole thing. Robbie rejoined the band for a while and they worked together several times after that. They are friends now and it's very obvious that it's not fake, because to this day they both only have nice things to say about each other

I'm sure Gaz is a good guy. But seing Rob's documentary just makes me feel bad. He was way too young. Were there no people around them to guide them? Gary always was pushed to the front, Mark Howard and Jason he didn't have to fear from, but with Rob it was different.

I think it is a question of perspective: there are those who are willing to make many compromises to become famous and maintain their status and those who do not: it is not a criticism, it is a consideration.
Ego, eh? Gary sounds so much like Hooky (New Order) in his inflections/phrasing/tone.
I never really understood the success of take that as I find most of their albums boring. Back for good is their best song no doubt. When Robbie left they did well with Patience, Rule the world… but it was up until the progress album that I think they were at their peak. Robbie joined in along with producer Stuart Price. Progress is their best album.
Gary is a talented singer songwriter but he’s boring. He’ll never be a gigantic entertainer in the same way Robbie is.
Robbie is so boring. His songs are boring. Take that's song especially the shine album is miles better than anything Robbie has done. Robbie has no talent. Lucky to get what he got.
Progress isn't better than Beautiful World or The Circus, and Back for Good isn't their best song, just the most popular.
