  • How do I find Great Gray Owls to photograph? This is a question that I'm constantly asking myself. In this week's video, I'll show you how I like to look for Great Gray Owls as I set out to photograph these beautiful birds in the forest.
This week's adventure was especially exciting for me as I wasn't just able to photograph Great Gray Owls, I also had a surprise encounter with an American Marten, also known as a Pine Marten. These are elusive members of the Weasel family and always a joy to see and a challenge to photograph. Luckily, I was able to have a few minutes with this energetic, forest predator before he ran off to chase some Squirrels.
This autumn, I was able to spend a lot of time with these Great Gray Owls, not just by myself but also during my private photography workshops. We had a wonderful time photographing these majestic birds and had some very memorable encounters. This week, I'll give you an insiders look at my workshop basecamp and show you some of the features I provide when you do a private or group workshop with me. On that note, my 2024 Alaskan Bear workshops are open for sign up on my website, be sure to save your spot now: www.jimmybreit...

Jimmy, you really created an amazing set up for clients for you workshops. Add this into element the title of this one! Many people would like to see that set up. You have put so much work into getting to this point. Most importantly, I hope all is well with your family now. I am sure it was a rough night for all given what you described. Otherwise, I enjoyed this two-part series on the great grey owls. You persisted through unpleasant weather. I still can't get over the "hairdo" in the first part. You can really see how much of the owls heads are feather fluff.

Many thanks my friend! It's been a lot of fun putting the whole workshop setup together, I think I will change the title and see if the video picks up some traction. Honestly, the bad weather just makes things that much more fun and interesting. I'd never spent time with Great Grays in weather like that, it was a very cool opportunity. The "hairdo" was quite silly, it still makes me chuckle just thinking about it!

The Pine Marten shots are pretty sweet! I have only ever seen one about ten years ago and sadly had the wrong lens on as I had been shooting a waterfall in Glacier National Park. Ironically my husband missed it completely despite the fact it had moved down a tree and sat right next him on a bridge. Obviously neither one of them knew the other was there until my husband moved and that Pine Marten took off like a shot! Sure hope I get another opportunity, I would be giddy too!

Thank you, Julie! Haha, that sounds like quite the fun story with your husband. You'll get another shot at one, just keep exploring and I'm sure you'll have some amazing opportunities. I only started seeing them within the last couple of years, but if you put in the time, the encounters will happen! Happy shooting :)

That was an outstanding video, the video footage and the images were incredible. Glad to see you finally got some great images of the Martin. Your camp setup for your workshops looks great and hopefully one day I will be able to join you on one of your adventures. Thanks for sharing your tips on finding the Owls and I have found that they work on all species of Owls. Have a great week!!

Thanks so much, Keith, I always appreciate it. I couldn't be happier with my time spent with the Great Gray Owls this autumn! I had such a great time both by myself and with my workshop participants. I can't wait to get back out with those beautiful birds. I've put a lot into my workshop basecamp and I really hope you'll be able to join me on an adventure one of these times. AMAZING bear images by the way! I've been admiring them and especially like the Black Bears, I'd love to get them on some terrain like that sometime. Very cool images!

    Hey Jimmy,
What an amazing encounter with that Marten. I know exactly how you were feeling. The whole world becomes a better place. The worries and stresses of everyday life just vanish and there is nothing but that moment. Just to be in that moment is blissful but to get some beautiful images as you did means that you can re-live the moment again and again.
A fabulous set of owl images and video footage but the highlight for me has to be the Marten pictures (mustelids rock, right 😊). The last image of the Marten coming down and looking around the trunk...sublime. one envious viewer right here.
What a camp set-up 😮. The Outdoors Hilton!
Best wishes from here in a very wet Wales.

Thanks so much, Robert! I know we feel the same way about mustelids, needless to say, I'm still so excited about those Marten images! I set that image of him peaking around the tree as my phone wallpaper and I'll probably print it and hang it up sometime soon, haha. Thanks again for your constant support, happy shooting, I hope you find some Otters or something just as neat sometime soon!

Great photos of the owl you got, really! And what a surprise with the martin!! Yes, it's great. Actually I'm trying to photograph martins too, but I can't find out their den, even using a trap camera. I thought they used holes on the ground or maybe in trees, but so far I wasn't lucky. Anyway, beautiful video Jimmy. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks so much, Giuseppe! Yes, that Marten was quite the surprise, I was so thrilled to see it. If you could find the den, that would be absolutely incredible. From my understanding, they prefer tree holes rather than ground dens. I hope you're able to find them!

During your talk about the Martin, was there a kingfisher chattering in the background?

    • @JimmyBreitenstein
      @JimmyBreitenstein  10 місяців тому

You've got a good ear. It was actually a Squirrel barking and alarm, which can sound a lot like a Kingfisher at times.
