Thanks for the video. I'm just learning.
Since he died three years ago, I've followed in my Dad's footsteps and just planted supermarket potatoes that had sprouted. They usually do pretty well.
This year I pushed the boat out and bought a few seed potato varieties.
Yesterday I planted:
First Early, Arran Pilot.
Second Early, Kestrel.
And some random ones that a friend of Dad's gave me.
When I have more space I'll plant some more.
Second Earlies: Wilja and Maris Peer.
Main Crop: Maris Piper.
Loving your clear explanation of how to plant. I am new at this and can't thank you enough:)
I'm not into gardening, nor do I have a garden of my own yet. I still watch your videos bc I find them therapeutic. I hope this doesn't come across as rude - it's never meant to.
Have a blessed Easter l!
I don't fill my 30L pots quite to the top but leave a couple of inches to add a mulch of Rape straw as a mulch which helps conserve the water and doesn't blow away once you water it.
A hand tip for cheap pots I got 14L buckets from B&Q which are only £1 and just drilled drainage holes in. I bought 10 of them last year but could never have afforded proper plant pots x
Brilliant tip!!
Seeing how the soil doesn’t fall through that pitchfork has me like wat 😮
Just a point. First Earlies are usually determinate potatoes anyway, so they grow in one layer, they don't need earthing up as they won't keep making more layers of spuds up the stems. Maincrop are usually indeterminate, which is why they need earthing up as they grow in layers up/from the main stalk.
Ahh yes, great point!
Is this how you tell determinate from indeterminate then? Because mine didn’t say what they were.
Laidback Gardener has a list of determinate and indeterminate on his channel. Worth checking out.
@charlotterydz6343 if you don't know and google doesn't shed any light, generally a determinate will be a smaller plant, they need less foliage to soak up sun as making less/smaller potatoes (think salad and new potatoes, also shorter harvest time). Whereas indeterminate grow taller and bigger, usually maincrop, since they generally make the bigger potatoes (roasting, baking, longer storage when cured etc, and a longer time until harvest), and more in multiple layers.
@@thinkpink4bex thanks so much, this is really helpful advice 💚
haha the wee robin toy 'n with the worm at the end , quality !
I think he was intimidated by its size 🪱 😆

🐝Thanks for the great video🌻 sput time!!
Thank you! Can't wait for the result.
Really interesting experiment. Looking forward to results
Lady C are one of our all time favourites and one we grow every year just over the border in Loughborough. They do really well for us and have great texture and flavour so hopefully they will do well for you too.
My grandad as a kid when I did gardening with him when planting out spuds he'd say bums down snouts up which means none chit side the down making contact to the soil and snout chit side facing up. So bums down and snouts up something that daft stuck with me and that's nearly 50 years back.
Love you content as always take care😊 2:41
Love this 💚

A bientôt
I've done 3 pots of pentlan javelin, looking forward to salad tatties. 😘
What potatoes are good for salad?
I have some basic Yukon gold, red Norland and some russets growing. First time trying potato plants
Hi Katrina. I'm growing Swift, 1st earlies, absolutely adore them!! Nadine 2nd earlies, nort groen them before . Have you? and Desiree, King Edward and Pink Fir Apple for main. I've never tried pots. Will have to see how yours progresses. I think the larger pot will give you more yield. 😊
Happy Growing 😀
Brilliant! Best of luck for some lovely potatoes 😊
Have to love a good spud🥔. Interested to see how these come out.
I'm trying to decide what size pots to buy. I'm curious to see the results too!
First early International kidney and second early Charlotte for me this year. I grow 4 seed potatoes per 42 litre pot.
Thanks Katrina and Robin 😃
So jealous of that soil!
I've got Red Duke of York, Charlotte and Setanta. Hope I get a better crop than last year. I put them in pots the first year after seeing your video. Had a great result. Last year I put them in the ground...very disappointed. My pots are getting sorted! I'm growing along with you again Katrina.
I love garden experiments. I bought German butter ball, this yr I'll plant them right. Some yrs back I planted them upside down, thinking the chit was the root. Also plan on using grown bags.
I see the Asian jumping worm has made its way to the UK, too.
I'm planting Natascha potatoes for my earlies and Chieftan for mid-earlies. Here in the frigid north my season isn't long enough for anything else. I'm looking forward to your results, though I expect the winner will be whichever seed potato had the fewest sprouts on it. It would be a better test if each potato was selected (or cut) to be the same size and had the same number of sprouts. Thanks for always putting out pretty and fun videos!
Cool. Looking forward to your results! I'm doing a similar experiment this year: I planted three 15(?) litre pots with 1, 2 and 3 first early seed potatoes respectively. I'm using the variety Annabelle which is supposedly very early and disease resistant.
Fantastisch katriena the patatos planning compost te poten thans te video Top Good weekend grootjes 🌷🪻👍🌤🧤☕️🥔🌺
Great idea. Look forward to the results as I have limited growing space. Plus the cost of compost.
The more un-parallel the tines on a fork - the better the gardener!
It just shows how strong gardeners are.
😂
Fantastisch Good work Kristina planting potatoes you the best te moostiun thans te video Top grootjes ✔️☕🧤⛅🌷🌺🥔👍
❤❤❤ beautiful video ❤
I don't usually grow first early potatoes but for second earlies I work on 2.5 liters per chit so I will go with the 15 liter doing the best, look forward to see the results.
Fun experiment 🥔 I’ll be following along 💚 I popped a rocket seed potato in a 5 litre pot cause I had one left over after planting my others, interested to see how much that produces.
I planted Home Guard earlies on 20th March
I tried fabric pots last year and it was a disaster. Going back to plastic pots this year. It will be fun to see how your experiment turns out
It’s good to try new things! Did they dry out and fall apart? Thanks for sharing 😃
@@homegrowngarden They didn't dry out or fall apart but the potatoes plants didn't grow any spuds. I'm wondering if the air pruning prevented them from developing. The plants themselves were huge, dark green and beautiful. They flowered nicely. But there wasn't a single potato when I tipped them out after the leaves turned yellow and they started dying back. It was a bit devastating!
It's so exciting getting first earlies in. I've planted Casablanca and Charlotte for 2nd earlies. I do the big containers and do 4 in each. It does give me good results but I wonder if I should do less per bucket.
Can't wait to see the results...But I would assume that you'll want to start with a slightly drier soil to plant your potatoes in to keep the seed from getting rotten.
I've no first earlies, but do have some Pentland Dell main crop and some Estima 2nd early chitting at the moment. My plan is to put them out the week after Easter with a small amount of soil, then add layers. I'm doing this with my 9 year old and I think she'll enjoy checking back to see if it's time to add more earth yet.
I'm not sure about our containers, though. We have 10 of each type of seed potatoes. I bought 2 special potato planters from Aldi - they aren't big, but you can lift an inner frame out and see how they're getting on. I am going to plant the two varieties separately in those so we can see how they're getting on. We then have two old plastic crates we can use for more and harvest according to how the Aldi planters are doing. I'm not sure if we need more pots. I was going to put 4 in the Aldi planters and 6 in the others. They'll be very crowded, but we're more interested in small potatoes than big ones. Maybe we need more pots, though!!
Hi my lovely friend
Just wondered if your trying for a family
All the best eddyx

Hi Katrina,
Now then, what do you think of this? I always plant 3 to 4 Charlotte in a 20 litre pot. Am I wasting them - should I plant fewer per pot?
Mr Robin stop playing with your food!!
I grew the varieties known as Rocket (early potato) and Agria (late season) here in New Zealand. 2 of my 'Rocket' pots (2 seed potatoes in 30L) were purely compost and the remaining 4 pots (1 'Rocket' & 3 'Agria' - again 2 seed potatoes in 30L pots) were various mixes of compost and peastraw. My watering was erratic. I started off late well into November (early summer here) but found that the with most of the daytime temps between mid to late 20's, I was coming home in the afternoon to what looked like water stressed plants.
The end result probably 1.5kg of small Rocket taters but about a kilogram per pot of Agria. Enough for me (single person household) but not really a success but far better than the previous years result.
Still will try next year but maybe in ground as well as pots and an attempt at more consistent watering.
Do potato grow bags dry out as quickly as pots or are they better for water retention?
I haven’t used them myself but I imagine they would grow ok providing they aren’t made from fabric. You might find they don’t last too long though if they aren’t very well made. Over time water and UV will likely damage the seams.
oooo nice , i love tattie time !
I vote for smallest pot for best results.
Always watch your potatoes planting and your potatoes reveals Katrina, love it I've just planted Charlotte's and pink fur apple, lovely watching u as usual x😊
Yes, she's great. Very informative and easy to watch/listen to. Wow, I'm about to plant charlottes and pink fir apples too! :)
Bless u, it's a sign of good things to come, 😊
Can't understand why you'd only pop one in a bucket Katrina ,bit of a waste of compost.Ive been using 4 in a 30 ltre bucket for years for first and second earlies Two at 3 " and two opposing ones around 8 inches ,then topped and grass mulch .Keeps moist better and so far always good harvests .Maincrops I use two .
I am surprised you use pots with all that land.
Do you do anything to acidify the soil? Potatoes like a Ph around 5.5.
I get wireworm in my soil which is the main reason why I use pots 🙂
Charlotte and International kidney.
These pots are really cheap and lots of internet places do them. I got six 20L ones for £12.00
Facebook marketplace is also a great place to pick them up cheap or free sometimes 😃
@@homegrowngarden doing potatoes in pots this year inspired by watching your video. Fed up with weeding and trying to find them in the ground come autumn 😀✌️
@@Nate1975 ahh that's awesome! Keep me posted on how they grow. You'll be converted i'm sure!
Size doesnt matter its how you use it
