That’s exactly me right now! I just got two girls a month ago. My first guinea pigs ever (I used to have chinchillas, which they have some things in common but still enough differences that I still had to do research) and then bam, I found Saskia. Words and years of wisdom here. I always come back to this channel if I hear something strange elsewhere

It's always a worry for me when i'm feeding my piggies, if i'm giving the right amount of variety, I'm getting better with it all and you and scotty's videos have helped open our eyes into what a piggy really needs for a happy life, you changed the whole way me and my wife look at them and for that we thank you both :) and our piggies thank you too!

My girl is very specific about what she eats.Loves her lettuce. They say a cup of greens a day.Well how exactly do you measure a cup of something like lettuce. I feed her green leaf/red leaf, only the edges of the greens not the stalk or even close to the stalk. She has maybe 4 to 5 leaves a day. This went on for months and months.Well last week I got up for breakfast and she wasn't on her pillow she comes out on to watch me get her greens ready. She was in her hut looking scruffy and bloated. When I got a grape (her favorite) she wouldn't take it which is when I got worried.I researched before I got her so I know about gas and bloat.I held her and lightly thumped her belly and it sounded hollow. I stopped greens and gave only hay as well as putting her on my lap as I sat on a message chair. If it became serious I would've gone to the vet but since I don't trust them I relied on the information I get from your channel ,Scotts and a few other Guinea pi enthusiasts. By the next day she started acting herself.Following me around as I do chores and watching TV with me.I know it sounds weird cause I'm a grown man with my sons pet but she has really brought a joy to my life that was unexpected. Luckily I got through this without gas meds or a vet visit.I will use gas drops if this happens again which I hope it doesn't.I don't trust vets because of what a vet working at Petco did to my last guinea pig. That story I will tell another day but there's good info on why you shouldn't buy from pet stores. If you do you shouldn't bring your pet there for medical needs. They ask you do a return as it was there policy. What they don't tell you is they do this so they can make decisions on your pets well being without notifying you.Which led to a very sad story. This was long enough though.Thank you from Pennsylvania for your videos

By the way, the compound in apple seeds is amygdalin, which inside the body chemically breaks down and releases cyanide. But your right, the amount is too small to do any harm. And thank you. 1:23 👏 Bravo. So glad you brough this up. The top of the pepper with all the seeds has been the favorite part of the pepper for every pig Ive ever had! They LOVE it. Glad you are adding your voice to squash the rumor about the seeds. Piggies around the world have been missing out on that and its about time it stopped. Happy to say I never believed the seeds were dangerous and have always fed them the whole pepper.

A small addition: I don't feed the stalk of the pepper (the green part). It has solanine and is poisonous. Though I don't know how much and if the amount is significant. I don't feed it just to be safe. But I feed all the white stuff and the seeds just like in the video.

For me, it was basically if I didn't eat it, they wouldn't get it. So I don't like seeds or the rough parts of certain veggies and fruits because I am sensitive to that - so sometimes that carried over to the piggies. I wasn't afraid though - just they seemed to be an extension of me! It wasn't even until later that I learned piggies could eat peppers and all kinds of things I didn't eat when I was younger. When I got older, I had a more refined palate and so the piggies did too! LOL

Thank you so much for sharing this! I used to not pay attention to what veggies I gave my piggies when I was a kid, and never had any problems with them. Now, years later I get piggies in my life again, and suddenly there's all these worries of everything causes guinea pigs to choke.
With celery, the people I know don't say to remove the strings, since it is all strings, they say to chop it into diced celery, that way the piggies don't choke on it the way they could choke on actual real fabric threads and strings.
With apples, the people I know, don't say no apples, they just say limit the apples and remove the seeds. But, the limits of apples is more of a limit of fruit because of the sugars.
Is too much sweet fruits and sugar not good for piggies, the way how some will say too much sugary foods isn't good for people?
    On the topic of choking....
Does chewing on sticks from outside or toys made out of sticks risk harm to guinea pigs?
I have a guinea pig that likes to chew on things just because he's curious and likes to be a busy piggy, but I don't know what's safe for him to chew on. Most things from pet stores have added dyes and junk ingredients(even the snack shack logs are as good as junk food if you read the ingredients), but with simple sticks people freak out calling them choking hazards.
Is there a safe wood list for piggies somewhere? My dad has access to organic apple wood, is that ok for piggies?

Guinea pig food police! Hahaha. Very funny. Choking from laughter. For the record, I have learned to make a choking noise just to get attention. Or, I am choking on air. Or I am simply imitating my owner, Shark. I will never tell! I make a single, coughlike sound and cause Shark to look over and give me full attention. No food necessary, and I don't do it very often, but it scares her every single time.

@@karaleetrapp I am glad your little one is healthy. It sounds like your girl Salt is a guinea pig after my own heart. I am sure she loves you as much as I love my owner, Shark. And that's a whole lot!

Thank you Saskia! I've been avoiding Celery for that very reason my girls are sooo picky and wont eat a lot if things (Banana, Apple, Orange, Watermelon, and Cantelope) Im glad I can now try Celery with my girls and I've figured out what you said about the internet is so true a lot of misconception. If it was some "official" class I could take to learn about this amazing animal I would. Please do more videos like these especially on what foods can be eaten every day and foods that cannot. Other foods like Broccoli and Cauliflower are the good or bad? Gas/bloat or Calcium build up or not? Help! Lol Another great video Sakia!!! BRAVO!👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Great video Saskia. I am very sad at the moment. Last Sunday my little man, Scoopie, was taken into emergencies at the animal hospital near me. He had trouble with his breathing. They gave him an xray and said he had pneumonia. They kept him in hospital and put him on oxygen and antibiotics. They called me on Wednsday and said I can take him home. He died in my arms Wednesday night. He was a real little character, like a mischievous child. I miss him so much. It has hit me real hard.

Poor thing! I wish you lots of strength to get through this, it will take time to heal but you’ll get there.I had the same thing happen to me last month, my boy Schubert had pneumonia and after oxygen thérapie he was getting better so vet said I could take him home. But two days later he died in our arms. At first I would cry every time I think about him, now I smile remembering him. Lots of love for you.
      RIP little Scoopie.

My piggies love the seeds in peppers so much!! I really like taking them out and filling my hand with them and just letting them all vacuum it up from my palm!😄 We do still chop everything though because we have so many piggies that if we don’t they start fighting over who gets what!🤦🏼‍♀️😅 Better to not have any arguments.😜

I gave my piggies bell pepper with seeds, one of them ate it and one left it there loooool it's their first seeds so it's a nice shock one ate it right away haha I avoided it becuz I thought it would be poisonous like some other stuff I read. Thank you soooo much Saskia, you're our Piggie Godmother!

I think a lot of ppl want to know how much is ok to give on a daily basis for both fruits and veggies

Absolutely. I keep hearing 1 cup a day but one cup of lettuce will be different than one cup of cucumber.

One of the LA guinea pig rescue employees at Scott's animals said its impossible to overfeed a guinea pig. They will know when they are done and in my experience they won't be overfed because when they don't want something they just leave it and go into the igloo to nap.

    • @cuuy
      @cuuy 5 років тому

@@lilmissShar That's only true if the guinea pig is used to the food and the amount. For example if you give them much more lettuce or cucumber at once, they could easily eat too much of them and get soft poops.

I've always cut up the celery I feed my piggies bc guinea pigs have had intestinal problems from consuming whole celery stocks. They can get stuck in their intestines and cause constipation. I think you're an AMAZING person and I love what you do and all of your guinea pigs look so amazing!!! I also completely agree about the guinea pig police😂

It is so funny my husband has told me for twenty years that he doesn't eat celery because of the string and he chokes on it. I used to cut the seeds out of capsicum because I don't eat them and often I will snack with the piggies.

I usually gutted the seeds and planted them because they tend to be the spiceiest part of any pepper, but i don't think im growing anything made by Walmart suppliers, i shall feed them to the piggehs
