Ukraine, Israel buying Chinese civilian drones for combat use; shun US military-grade drones.

  • Ukrainian and IDF forces strongly prefer Chinese drones to US-built drones, in their respective combat operations. This according to reporting by the Wall Street Journal since February of last year.
US-built drone weapons are less reliable, more easily jammed by Electronic Warfare efforts, and do not fly as far or with payloads as advertised. China drones are also far less costly.
The Chinese-built drones are commercial grade, and are purchased off-the-shelf by volunteers who then send them to either Ukraine or Israel, where they are repurposed for combat use. The main producer of these Chinese-built drones, DJI of Shenzhen, strongly opposes the use of their equipment in military applications.
The strong preference of allied countries for Chinese civilian drones over American military drones, and the stark differences in battlefield performance, do lead to very disturbing questions; namely, how much better still are Chinese military-grade drones? How were the Russians able to overwhelm the GPS signals in the US-made drones? If the US companies that build our drones admit publicly the enormous challenges they face, what concerns do they share only privately?

      That's nonsense.
Drone warfare requires cheap low cost, low tech drones.
Both 100 Million cost drone and 1000 dollar drone dies to 1 missile.
You could use thousands of low cost drones to overwhelm enemy positions or defences.
Higher cost drones become liability because 1 loss is too many.

I may have said before, but during Korean War, Chines PLA with 600k soldiers defeated and pushed back 2 million US + UN army in a matter of weeks.
Chinese army was only equipped with rifles, machine guns, mortars, and shovels.
They dug tunnels for safety and surprise attack, and also warmth during the winter.
US and UN army were equipped with tanks, heavy guns, air support, and all the high tech equipment, and lost.
They had numerical and technological superiority, but a lot of them froze to death.
Now, China has better weapons, hypersonic missiles, nukes, and fancy new jet fighters and destroyers and cyber war capabilities.
Not hard to guess who'd win.

"Russians will never have this technology!" -Harry Truman, 1945. edit: DJI holds all the major (good ones) patents on drones, that's one of the reasons the US can't make them. It goes from blades on rotors, rotors, certain control systems etc. Being in "good relations with China" US can't hope China will ever allow DJI to sell the rights to use patents that the US needs. So in a nutshell, the US foreign policy put the US in a tough spot that they earned with the arrogance, lying and pissing off the whole world. Enjoy your rewards, there are more to come after Yellen threatened China yesterday.

Not exactly. Chinese make more different kinds and quality levesl of 'toy drones' aka 'Hobby drones' and thus have more brands and sizes ideal for converting into small scale military drones.
The USA does produce some brands of hobby drones but there aren't nearly as many kinds, builds, sizes, powers etc.
So, none of these are the military drones.
The USA does have military drones of mid and large size but not so much in cheap small ones (that we know of).
So yes, Chinese toy drones have more kinds than American toy drones.

All the people I know who are into drone videography and photography use DJI. They also manufacture drones that cost thousands of $ where you can mount professional video cameras. In fact, they have expanded into drones for agriculture use, high voltage power lines inspection, etc.
Frank Wang Tao, who founded DJI did his Master's thesis in drone controls technology. He started DJI and ran it out from his dorm at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Together with a few friends he went to Shenzhen to start his company. As they say, the rest is history. DJI has over 70% share in the consumer drone market. He is the first drone billionaire.

Chinese civilian technologies are experiencing so much competition that they have surpassed western (and sometimes Chinese military) tech.
Drones is a classic example. You see videos online of drone carrying a grenade, flying a few kilometers and dropping the grenade. But in China, agricultural drones are used to spray pesticide, that has range longer than rockets and can carry a tank of pesticide (40-50kg), capable of carrying a legit small warhead across the frontlines. Other examples include: the Chinese military looked into buying the arresting gear to slow down landing aircraft, when they had a tender process, they found that the ones used on American aircraft carriers were made in China, by a company that produced different variety of cabling. The Chinese military also looked into getting high quality carbon fiber, but found one of the companies to be a fishing equipment maker that uses carbon fiber.

One of the other aspect that is not mentioned is the sheer volume of production. A single drone from DJI costs about $2,000 AUD in Sydney after all the taxes.
If DJI's tech is used in the Chinese military, then they do not need a controller for each drone (suicide drones just fly in, explode), they can build a single controller for all the drones, save costs.
There is no safety features, like automatic stopping the propellers when it detects human presence or guard rails aruond the propellers, save costs.
There is no need to make the rotors to last for enduring flight, recharge, and more flight. A suicide drone just need to operate once for about 4-5 hours to find its target, save costs.
If you already know the trajectory, you can remove the GPS/BDS communication system and install a system that programs the flight path in before launch, so it cannot be hacked, save costs.
If you are certain of the target and trajectory, you don't really need a camera. You certainly don't need a 4k 60fps camera, just a camera good enuogh to see where it is going is enough. save costs.
If DJI is building for the Chinese military, then it cannot make massive profits or risk getting 'nationalised', save costs.
What happens if the Chinese military launch a swarm of thousands of drones at the cost of $500 each? Are we going to defend against it with missiles that cost 1.2 million each? or with AA guns that even the bullets costs about this much?

I think this drone story feeds into the American exceptionalism mindset, where a disturbingly significant portion of Americans as well as their leaders have been so utterly convinced of their technological and developmental superiority for so long by the media and Hollywood, that they haven't kept pace with developments in other countries and are often surprised to find that other people have a greater capacity than they expected.
You see that exceptionalist mindset in the views of a lot of Americans online when faced with facts they cannot accept. "American military grade drones are worse than Chinese toy drones that anyone can buy from ToysRUs." Typical American reply? "Yes well, our military is only giving them crap drones that we don't want from 10 years ago. Our military has a drone that can single-handedly defeat 100 fighter jets by itself." "I don't understand the fuss over iPhones. I own both Apple and Samsung phones and I'm often surprised by how inferior my iPhone is to my Samsung." Typical American reply? "I can't even talk to anyone who uses an android device." "I think the US and NATO should be careful about taking on Russia. Russia is used to fighting wars against proper armies, Americans have mainly fought nations they were overwhelmingly superior to." Typical American reply? "Russia's army is using equipment from the time of the Flintstones. If they mess with us our army will bring down our secret death star and bomb them into infinity."
The US is truly a great nation but it has to stop believing that it is at the forefront of everything. Recent events in the world are starting to show us, regardless of media propaganda, that the US has been standing still while other nations have quietly advanced themselves.

And I wonder why my monthly cell phone services cost 10x more than the rest of the world and we’re still using 3 & 4g while China’s moving on to 6g and average unlimited data service in most parts of the world is $8-12/month.

China should ban selling drones to the two countries

Sanctions (in this case export bans) don’t work. Ask Russia.

In fact, China has banned the sale of drones (including DJI) to Ukraine and Russia.
But Ukraine and Russia can easily buy China-made drones from other countries.
None of the drones currently used in Ukraine are directly bought from China.

Sooo here's one more way for China to put its thumb on the scale. I thought it was understood that from a strategic standpoint, China is kind of better served by a Russian victory.
