“Game Changer” British Military’s New DragonFire Laser To Shoot Down Russian Drones

- The British military is ramping up efforts to have all the bells and whistles to compete against the world's best armies.
Their latest investment is a military laser called the 'DragonFire' weapon, which will be used to shoot down Russian drones in Ukraine. It had previously been reported that the laser would be able to hit targets the size of a coin from miles away.
Former British Army Colonel Hamish de Bretton-Gordon joins TalkTV's Maddie Hale to discuss what the weapon is and how crucial it is for Ukraine!
The DragonFire weapon, which is expected to be ready for deployment by 2027 at the latest, could have “huge ramifications” for the conflict in Europe, the Defence Secretary said.
New reforms aimed at speeding up procurement mean the laser, originally set to be rolled out in 2032, will now be operational five years earlier than planned, according to the Ministry of Defence.
The MoD hopes the DragonFire system will offer a low-cost alternative to missiles by carrying out tasks such as shooting down attack drones.
Ukraine’s energy infrastructure was targeted in overnight missile and drone attacks on Thursday, with more than 200,000 people around Kharkiv left without power, foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba said.

@jeffbguarino Our country has money, but none of it is being spent on our people. Everything has been cut back, and everyone is struggling. It's pretty bad here poverty wise atm, worst I've seen it.
@@warriorprincess1846 Read about the poverty in British cities. I was just looking at it yesterday , 1855 in Glasgow. 3 people to a bed , 8 people in a 10 ft by 10 ft room. No toilet , everyone stunk and the men would drink away the money. Kids starving and standing outside the pub to wait for daddy to exit. If you had a room to sleep in you were lucky and if you had a pile of straw and bunched up clothes to sleep on ,you were rich. My mother in Canada slept with her 2 sisters on one bed. The person in the middle with the head at the far end to fit better. No toilet , no running water and a pot to piss in. For the kitchen sink, it was a round basin. They had a back house but who wants to go and sit on that in -34C, good luck. I don't think it even snows if much of the UK. Struggling to you is when you can just barely make your car payment.
I am retired and I have an EU passport and I would be happy to move to England and spend my money but the UK decided to break away from the EU , so my option of giving my pension money to Britain is gone. I like Scotland. I could have just moved there with no visa or anything but now I can't.

@@longandshort6639 yes, as a laser it can hit a target at the speed of light, but targeting the missile is a whole different stoty and the targeting does not move at the speed of light. Anyone keeps track of "game changers"? first it was Javelins and Stingers, then M777, then HIMARS, then Bradley Fighting Vehicles, then Challenger 2 and Leopard 2 tanks, then Storm shadows and Scalp cruise missiles, the water drones, ATACMS and 155mm cluster munitions, I am sure I forgot some, lost track of the "Game changers"
I think biggest "game changer" was the attack on the concert hall.
Some of those weapons were game changers. Storm Shadow and Scalp were a major part of making Crimea untenable for the Russian fleet and making life very unsafe for air bases there. HIMARS had a devastating impact on Russian logistics and troop concentrations. Bradleys have been VERY successful in Ukraine, cluster munitions munitions took a huge toll on the Russians and ATACMS have not been supplied in any quantity and not in the most effective variant, but they would undoubtedly have a huge impact. As for modernish tanks, the Ukrainians like them because they can be used more effectively to target Russians at a distance and at night. What you need to appreciate is the lack of quantity of those weapons.
@@nerdyali4154 at the start when HIMARS started to get used in Ukraine it had significant impact and caused damage, but when was the last time you heard about HIMARS in the news? they have very little impact now, my guess because there are not many of them 10 maybe, with very limited supply of ammunition. Not to mention that Russians started jamming GPS signals in wide areas and learned to intercept these missiles better.
So if this was a game changer what did it change?
Same for Storm shadows and SCALPS, they did damage.
But it will never get Russia to change the game.
But things haven't changed much. Russian military is still there doing about the same what they did before.
The real game change was US, UK and other countries giving thousands of drones, more than a million in 2023.
That means can't hide anything, can't make big groups or swarm of drones will come in and blow everything up.
@@nerdyali4154 "What you need to appreciate is the lack of quantity of those weapons."
I think you are the one not appreciating the tiny amount of these systems used in Ukraine.
For example there are 10 or heck, even 20 HIMARS launchers in Ukraine, and 50 STORM shadow + SCALP missiles.
There are probably 200 HIMARS launchers situated on islands not far from Taiwan.
Many airbases with hundreds of planes armed with all kinds of missiles including ones similar to STORM shadow + SCALP missiles.
But let's wait year 2025 and see what gamechangers were HIMARS, Storm shadows, Bradleys.
For every video with Bradleys shooting at the enemy I have seen two videos with pile of burning Bradleys, does that count as game changer?
More Bradleys have been destroyed or damaged than the working Bradleys left in the world. There is a reason US gave Bradleys away, they were sitting in warehouses without much use anyways.
Bradleys wouldn't be much use for US in war with Iran or China, that they don't have control of a land border with.
You are so jealous!

4:48 How does one go about protecting the machine from capture!?
It's mounted on an armored vehicle with tires that can go about 120km/h (and it can fire on the move), it's intended to zoom around to be near the front-lines while being able to flee fast, and has pretty good range. It fires and moves. It's also not deployed right at the front, you put it near critical targets to protect them, so it's going to be surrounded by other ground forces, and give them a shield effectively.

So you could very easily defend say a city or a carrier group. But the system needs to be fully tested first. Nice of Russia to help out with that.

Now if only Ukraine had power plants to power them…
This has only just come into commission in the UK, and the stats say that it's significantly underpowered when compared to American variations. If it were that effective it wouldn't be going to Ukraine; the whole reason it's being sent is for the battlefield data regarding it's effectivity
That’s not true at all, The British laser has far more capabilities than the American version both in range and power, Due to this the American laser programme has been placed on hold whilst the British Laser is soon to be in service, You can look this all up for yourself
@@anthonygudgeon4298 I have, hence why I wrote what I did. The Dragonfire is only capable of 1mile range, American equivalents are 3.2km, and can only target one vehicle at a time, travelling at minimal velocity. Hence why it's used for drones. A cruise missile could literally destroy the system quite easily.
@@kadowie It was actually designed to defend against cruise missiles. Drones were not the primary concern when development begun. Also, the US system started out with enormous power budgets. Beam focus and other systems had to be developed. Then there is the fact that cruise missles are designed for targets which are not in motion and are far less capable when they are. In fact, I dont recall them being used to target fast moving vehicles, where airstrikes are typically more effective. I would expect to see an anti air system based on the same technology. It is no hard to imagine destroying aircraft using their own munitions.
Did the lasser was tested on him?
Clown changer
This is pathetic
They will send ONE to Ukraine for testing and development, not really a "game changer" until it's available in numbers. But this is def. the way to go for drone defence.
Drone and missile defence. They are talking of drones at the moment but the system was meant for missle defence. Missiles being very expensive, this adds serious economic advantage. On the hand, drones are cheap and shooting them down with 60,000 dollar missiles becomes economic attrition, even if you do shoot them all down. So this is is a really interesting development.
Don't put all your eggs in one basket. Multi-layered defences is better. This is effective at relatively short ranges only.
Hamish looks like the lazers have hit his face a few times as well.
More expensive gear to get blown up.😢
