Nofx are the masters of this. Linoleum is a perfect case study
Old offspring as well
Millencolin, Lagwagon, no fun at all I think most of the 90's skatepunk bands flirtet with this really
Blink as well... Not now, i miss you, feeling this, every time i look for you, and many bridges... Like in First date...
I love how you show us WHY we love a certain style of music!
I love when bands use octave riffs, my favourite is probably the chorus to Welcome to the Black Parade as it is almost the same notes as the vocal melody
The Japanese band Asian Kung Fu Generation uses these a lot too. Absolutely love it.
Their song Rewrite used in Fullmetal Alchemist 2003 (which I think is awesome, frankly) comes to mind for me.
thats one hell of a band name lol
actually really cool: ) thank you for teaching!
I love a good octave chord, I use them everywhere!
bruv! thanks for this vid, so simple yet so powerful !!
Glad it helped!
Love that you used Choking Victim for an example.
They're one of my favourites for sure!
So many of the songs I write have these chords in them and I never knew that they were called octave chords. Neat.
My favorite use of octave chords is in "Demon of the Fall" by Opeth.
On the more metal slide slipknot likes to use a lot of octave riffs especially in their earlier years
I still remember the first time me and my friend played ‘Duckpond’ on two guitars, usually I would only play on my own with just the rhythm. It blew our fucking minds.
Neck deep uses these for leads often. Can make some cool counter melodies
Thank you on the tips. I already knew how to play octaves but I didn't know how to use them, so thank you.
Sure man, I'm glad it helped!
I fkn love octave riffs!
Ah, I somehow did not know they had a name. An octave with a bass progression is my definition of pop punk rock vibe.
underrated channel
I love octave riffs!
Been using that dual-cord sound for many years.. never knew how was it called 😅
A trick I figured out ages ago, split your chords between two guitars.
one guitarist plays 5ths, one guitar plays 3rds and 4ths and BOOM you literally sound so much cooler than power chords.
Tom Delonge applied this Alien Exist and Please Take Me Home on blink record.
My favorite example would be Falling Apart by Lagwagon
I'm a simple man, I hear no use for a name, I like it
a 5th is a perfect interval and can be used freely, an octave is even FREE-ER as it is basically a single note, an extremely transparent interval. it just makes sense that it'd be used because it so seemlessly goes over any chord because it's literally the least dense chord ever.
Octaves are a must-be in pop punks. I'm not okayyyyyyyyyyyyyy
you wear me oooouuuuuuut
love the Shai Hulud intro!!!!!
I love the tune for that one song by that one vegan punk band but I actually think it's too fast. It could be slowed down to be heavier and personally I'd take the octave chords out entirely. I re-wrote it to have the first three chords, the last one with augmented suspensions, then for the descending final chords I have probably the first chord and then end with a bunch of notes until it resolves on F. You can probably guess the notes I play but I have to figure out the right speed to play it so that it's heavy enough.
Shhh you're giving away all the secrets
Do you have any videos about tracking acoustic guitars?
I've made one that will be uploaded soon. What exactly did you want to know about tracking them?
@@SugarpillProd I guess everything! How to get a fatter sound from them. Vocals too:D
Does anyone know the name of that no use for a name song from the live video PLEASE lol.
The Smashing Pumpkins also use these quite a bit
Sounds like some kid got into my cd collection again
I can't understand clearly, for example in Chasing rainbows, the chords are played on the same frets. Could you explain me? Thanks for your channel and what you do!!
In Chasing Rainbows, they're playing two different octaves parts at the start. The left guitar is just playing octaves of each root note, and the right guitar alternates between octaves for the 3rd & 5th of those same root notes.
For instance, when the left guitar plays a C octave, the right guitar plays an E octave, which is the 3rd of the C.
Hope that helps!
Jazz slowly opens one eye ... and closes it again
What's the name of the song at 0:50?
you should make a chords variation bible for us
Fermented and Flailing
You should put a seymour duncan invader humbucker in that tele for the neck pickup ;)
I think that might be a bit overkill, haha.
@@SugarpillProd Not at all.. you would get a better "pop-punk" tone. Or at least mod it to a four switch so you can use your pickups in series mode.
@@IceBreakBottle Yeah, maybe. I don't really like the sound of invaders, regardless.
Let’s not forget ‘Smile’ by Bigwig
And if you haven’t heard it, look it up, you won’t be disappointed.
Guitar World magazine... 1996 maybe? The guitar solo on "My Friends" by RHCP was the first time I met "octave chords" and have been a huge fan since. The omission of the fifth makes it so when you get to the diminished chord (the bVII* in major or the II* in minor) it still fits in a diatonic progression. Love to use split chords too- ex.: C#m7 = X4X45X -because they still have the third and the seventh while being easier to move around the fretboard. ✌💗🤘
the best octave playing i head was by WES MONTGOMERY
Swedish death metal, D-Beat, pretty much anything with melody uses them.
someone know what is the song from NUFAN?
What's the first song you play in the video? I'm drawing a blank on the name right now
It's Rise Against - Savior, just remembered
I saw NUFAN 6 months before Tony died 🥺
possessions never meant anything to me, I'm not crazy. :)
it's the muted string in the middle that leaves room for the pain. ;)
RIP Tony Sly
Built to Spill - end of the song Else
Oh yeah that's what those are called. I use those all the time with stupidly ridiculous fuzz when I doom too.
Lit - my own worst enemy
I like how you hide the guitar brand in shame
As if I'd even care about guitar brands 😂
How to make song like better luck next time, or maybe a synth pop punk video
what's the song playing at 0:50
Life Size Mirror by NUFAN.
I would call this a Dyad, and not a chord :P
Dave Navarro uses this in the solo in My Friends by RHCP
And Warped, i think
What are the songs at the beginning? They sound so familiar.
was that a choking victim riff you threw in there? sounded like 500 channels. haha
Good ear 👍
@@SugarpillProd thanks! yes, a fan of that band and that song in particular. like many people, I've listened to it a million times. lol like, IT SOUNDS FAMILIAR! lol great video!
Stevie Ray Vaughn loves this trick he’s blues
Billy Corgan / Jimi Hendrix
Stop giving away all these secrets! Lol. I literally just wrote a song last night that has a prominent octave chord lead. My music would be slightly less impressive to people if they knew how easy it is to get the sound I do. At the same time I'd love to hear the results of people taking your tips and writing original music.
I hate to tell you friend octave chords are no secret
@@kutsumiru I know but a lot of people that I know don't know. Most of the songs I write are good but not anything special. But the mixing and layering tricks that Sugarpill shows off are the things that make people think my songs sound "professional."
@@mastod0n1 fascinating.
@@mastod0n1 riiight
because
How good is Millencolin
One of my favourites for sure!
But where did it all start ?
In rock music it was Hendrix with ‘Third Rock from the Sun’ . Then Brian Baker brought it to hardcore punk with Dag Nasty in the late 80s… listen to ‘Values Here’ and most songs off ‘can I say’ . This is where pop punk got their sound.
clique riff...find your own sound....unless you like sounding like top 40..ooops
I meant hardcore punk.
Yeah because top 40 is full of this type of sound 😂
First song that came to mind was sum 41s walking disaster
because its easy to do
Can you help with don't call me white riff?
What bit are you struggling with?
@@SugarpillProd the other guitar part if that makes sense, can't find the chords just doesn't sound right
@@andyj8814 I haven't played it in awhile, but I believe it's mostly power chords, and then the little riffy bit is just using a mix of 5ths, accidentals and 6ths.
I think that riffy bit is an B/D#, E5, B/D#, to a F#6.
As long as you've got those down, and the strumming pattern - which is the usual skate punk pattern, just with a bunch of stops & starts - then it shouldn't be too tricky to learn.
@@SugarpillProd thanks mate
500 Channels
blink-182 was good with this
I need a fuxkin electric I am bored of acoustic now
500 channels 👻
Dead Fish
Tom Petty - American girl (that at its best)
Chocking victim riff
I miss the times when Tom actually wrote riffs and didn't rely heavily on octave riffs for guitar "parts". Dude can't even be bothered to move the chord around in some songs.
We are far far far away from the Buddha/Cheshire cat era ☹️☹️
@@gabriellevesque-lessard5052 he doesn't even have to go back to that. I'd be happy enough if he didn't sit on A5 for a whole verse while Mark's bass and the synth pads dictated the chord changes.
@@thomasj.9686 Yup he over use the A5 lol... mark too
@@thomasj.9686 The Buddha era was great for outstanding guitar riffs!!!
These comments are so cringe. I used to love earlier Blink albums and can still appreciate them, but the first couple of albums are in no way their peak (as with most bands), and there's plenty of skilled and creative guitar playing in later albums all the way up TOYPAJ album. Also, Tom has used octaves in his playing throughout the whole of Blink's discography, so I don't know what you're all complaining about.
Punk guitar is kinda a misnomer since hardly anyone in punk bands can actually play guitar. it's all ridiculously inept amatuer beginning lever playing. And i don't think these are actually chords since they are simply 1 note + octave. You need more than 1 note to form a chord. These are simply octaves.
You obviously haven't heard many punk bands, if you think everything is simple. Try learning some Strung Out or Propagandhi, and you'll see this isn't the case.
This primary school knowledge.
Meeeeean ;(
That's a primary school reply...
@@frick584 r/whoosh
Technically, octaves aren’t chords :) Just octaves.
that's not punk, this is like more subgenera like emo, melodic hardcore etc...
Nu metal in a nutshell
And the most important fact , its easy and they cant play that much...
More like a misconception, rather than a fact.

I love your sarcastic reply. An immature defense mechanism that confirms your feelings got hurt. 😂 Come on man, how old are you
Boring
it’s such a generic sound, how to make a punk song sound like pop
the real reason is because 99% of punk band members don't practise and they don't know any theory lol so octaving is an easy harmony
i just hear awful pop punk
Well when you can’t play guitar for shit….
Super easy, sounds thick. The problem is it's super cliche' and boring now. Time to move on and learn new things.
Nofx sucks
