  • Rock climbing is a sport that puts fear to good use. Fear brings focus. For avid climbers, clearing their minds of distractions is a life-saving imperative. The risks and the rewards and both tremendous. Scaling a 1000ft brings an unparallel sense of freedom and personal accomplishment... And the views aren't half bad either.
Fight to Survive tells the inspiring true stories of outdoorsmen who have faced down death in the wilderness and lived to tell their story. Adventurer, author and survivor Craig DeMartino kicks off the series with his own story.

Analysis. At 5:40 the leader says "off belay." The camera shows the belayer taking him off belay. "OK, belay's off." Then a few seconds later, the leader is shown leaning back on the rope and saying "on you" and falling to the ground. Well, what did he expect the belayer to do after he yelled "off belay"?

That has been puzzling me as well. They seem to think that Steve was responsible for tying knots in the rope, but if Craig had not leaned back without securing his own harness to the rock this would not have happened. it sounded like he thought he was secured because who in their right mind climbs 100 ft and then leans back on what is essentially a loose rope that somebody who's climbing up that belay would cause slack?

It seems like everyone, even people who claim to be climbers (except Wallrat), are blaming Steve. But what happened here is that once Craig secured himself to the rock face, that is supposed to mean his harness is secured to the rock face and he's no longer on the belay - he literally said " off belay." At that point, yes there should have been knots in the bottom of the rope, but Steve had no reason to think that Craig would need those knots. So these are two rookie mistakes that both of these men made. It wasn't just Steve and it wasn't just Craig but if anyone made the fatal error it was Craig by unhooking his harness and assuming Steve had started his ascent.

I'm not a climber, pleas tell me ,why did Steve think it was ok to let go of the rope ???

Because Craig yelled "off belay" meaning he had secured his harness to the rock.

No reason to do this IMHO! I can't see. Why people do this type of thing! Do these people have a death wish??? 🤔

The feeling you get when your 1000ft off the ground, the pure peace of the mountains, a nice breeze, being above everything. The focus you need, your 100% in the moment. Climbing is our yoga ya know

I don't see how people with near death experiences return to the area or activity that almost killed them. I can get stung by a bee at someone house & never go back..lol.
