RISK and EXPENSE On EVEREST to Remove Perished Climbers

- In 2016 three indian climbers died trying to summit Mount Everest. Two of them were abandoned by their guides near the top. In 2017, the Indian government funded an expensive mission to retrieve their bodies.
Over 300 have lost their lives on Mount Everest. Should great expense and risk be taken to remove them, or should they remain where they are as a reminder of the perils of high altitude mountaineering?

If they leave the bodies up there they will start to pile up, making the mountains higher. Then a new record can be set, on every summit!
ALL Everest climbers should have a separate insurance policy that THEY have to fund, that pays for the body recovery if they die. This should NOT be funded by taxpayers!
Many expedition outfitters require a climber to carry her/his own insurance policy, which are far easier to obtain in the last 5-10 years. However, not all do. I agree with you that every single climber should have one.
Should not be funded at all. They should be made to pay for an insurance but not for themself, but for their trash.. who cares if they stay up there but get their trash out of nature or make their family pay
You take the risk, and you pay for the risk.
Also, they should pay for any Sherpas that lost their lives to

Risking other people's lives to retrieve heavy frozen bodies at such altitude is ridiculous. Once you die on Everest, you become part of it. Every climber knows the risk they take.
Not so simple! There is a video on these very mountain victims! In India, they do not pay out the life insurance without a body! One case: His Family really needed the money to survive!
Another case , his Widow was in a serious denial, refused to accept he was dead! It really affected her! Once she saw his body, she accepted the reality!

@@travislebron The human waste and garbage actually eventually pollutes the water below - where the people live.
They were likely abandoned by their guide because the guides life was at risk guiding people who don't belong on Mount Everest.
Yes, you are essentially correct. Same time, many of the expedition outfitters don't carefully vet their clients, and because they charge less for the fees there are more people...and more people require more Sherpa support, thus less experienced high altitude guides that are younger....
@@EverestMystery cheap operators..
Ethically they should vet the client and not match them to their death
I'd agree w this post ,they probably got Summit fever . Stupidity ,low oxygen ,pride whatever 🙄 possibly set in, thus endangering all lives . I don't blame the guides at all in certain situations for leaving their clients behind .
Yep if you think about it, had Rob Hall left Doug Hansen up there technically I guess people could have said he abandoned him up there as well. I think Rob and these other people could possibly justify it by saying they were going for help. The whole thing is too sticky with complex ethical issues that's why I'd never want to get myself caught in that situation in the first place.
Their "guides" did NOT "abandon" these "climbers".
Their guides were Sherpas whose experience, knowledge and understanding of the mountain and its weather, safety, risks and trails; and mountaineering, and its equipment, safety, potential danger and all its training - made them critical advisors as to whether a climb should be begun or abandoned. If the Indian climbers chose not to listen to these guardians of the mountain trails, (then, with all due respect to the dead, and I am sorry) but I am not at all surprised all three passed away not long into their fatal trek. It was always going to be a tragedy due to over- confidence and blind hubris.
Many climbers have walked by people in need of assistance just so they can summit. Something has gone wrong at Everest. More so wrong with some people..
I guess when you're paying 250k its every man to fend for himself
@@momo_the_kiwi121 That's the irony. Scott Fisher took a Sherpa from Rob Hall's team who was supposed to fix lines ahead of all the climbers going up. Fisher had him short roping (hauling) millionaire socialite promoter Sandy Pittman up the lower part of Everest instead, so that she could claim another 8000 metre summit under her belt.
Many died that day for many reasons. Krakauer blamed Pittman for some of it, especially as she was rescued by the superhuman-minded Russian who went back three times without 0² to rescue 3 people in the near death situation.
So, long story short... those who pay for more than one Sherpa or guide for themselves and who do so knowing it's because they don't have technical skill, fitness, experience, training, stamina etc and may expect to be carried both up and down the slope.
I write this from watching dozens of videos and reading many accounts of the alpinists and mountaineers themselves. No personal experience, apologies.
(Except 60 years of life and learning from my own mistakes.)
@@NavigatorMother- I have personal experience. I lived in Nepal and spent a lot of time trekking in the Annapurna and Everest regions. My longest trek in the Everest region was for 3 weeks. I just climbed a trekking peak, 18,000 feet, short by Everest standards. It was an easy climb. It required no special equipment or oxygen. We stayed for 45 minutes at the top, looking at Everest. But not climbing it.
I agree with everything you wrote. Summit fever is real and it is dangerous. People will go up who do not have the ability or skill because they think they can do it and think that someone will save them if they get into trouble. Then things go wrong. My husband was a consular officer and we dealt with the bodies when they got back to Kathmandu.
No one can basically "rescue" anyone over 8,000 meters. It would take a troupe of people working high up on the mountrain to bring them down. Choppers can't go that high. People go up blindly not even beginning to realize what could happen. And how they basically can't be helped.
It seems so easy when you think about going there in the comfort of your home. The reality of it is something completely different. I saw it so many times. And the end results, too. I will leave it at that.
@@marilyndee969you mean Pemba who went back up 3 times to save ppl? He’s Sherpa… Sherpas are more of ethnic group/tribe than title.
Have each climber pay a $50,000 fee that can be used if they're killed. If not, they get the money back.
That's actually not a bad idea...
No money to retrieve

No, actually this will risk them more as the money is the best thing to make PPL die they will probably think to just go to the Everest and they will think they are rumours and they will just get their money back but the rest u know the dead bodies will always tell u the stories
And the secreteries down there when the customer returns: Oh you're still alive...
In thought: 50.000$ gone😂😂😂
I dont know if that would cover it
They weren't abandoned. It's every man for himself up there. If you're injured or incapacitated a rescuer could very well die trying to bring you down. Climbers, especially professional climbers, know this and must accept the risk of being left in the death zone should something happen.
Very true, thank you

They should remain as warnings to others that the risk is real. People forget how much of a risk they are taking.
As much as I agree that they should be on the mountain due to the severe difficulty of getting them down, I don’t think that all approximately 200 of the bodies that are there now should stay, it’s just too many in my opinion
And since when do humans stop life threatening endeavors or behaviours seeing dead or damaged bodies? Or are being told that their actions could or even will lead to death?
So many people still smoke, although there are horrific fotos on the packs; they still drive too fast, although so many unenvolved people died because of a race in the streets; still drink too much alcohol, knowing it is not good for their liver, head and whole body; still take drugs, although they could die of an overdose; still travel by plane and live on the expanse of following generations and the countries of the global south etc. ...
There is so much knowledge and wisdom but humans rather shut their eyes, ears, and hearts then stop doing something that they selfishly crave, want, enjoy.
If our world crumbles, every generation after us will ask how too many people could have been so stubborn, selfish, dumb to continue as usual. 🤯
That don't care about that. The fools they are.
That's the coolest place to die if I passed away my homies can visit me
There is already 300 of ones like this. It does not help.
Every climber should have to pay a flat fee to a fund to retrieve/remove their body if they die on the mountain. Average the number of climbers per year, average the number of deaths, and the costs associated with retrieval, and come up with a fee for everyone. Teams pay the fee for their sherpas.
Once there is a decent amount allocated, then use a certain percentage every year for cleanup of the garbage left on the mountain.
They know and accept the risk when they climb Everest. They also know they must walk back down on their own two legs, the same way they ascended the mountain, or else the mountain claims their bodies. Forever.
No public money should be spent to retrieve bodies.
The mount Everest come under Nepal territory and India is just retrieving the bodies of its citizens.

They volunteer because they NEED the money
Even if Rescuers volunteer making the summit is costly in materials and food and you must pay other sherpas and you must train extensively for high altitude climbs so I doubt many ppl are jumping to volunteer unless it is a family member or friend. It’s also dangers just to make the summit let alone a rescue mission. Besides many who climb find it an honor to die on the mountain doing what they love. Should be a reminder to those in pursuit that they may have made a bad decision
Having experienced Nepal, I think the bodies of the fallen should remain where they fell. Body recovery is achievable, however the risk of further loss of life is huge. I think that no amount of money is worth further loss of life.
Then if its that risky, stop the climbs. Those mountains were considered holy places and they let rich foreigners trash it. Sherpas should refuse to guide until companies remove all bodies and human waste first. I think honestly the people that die on it would probably want to stay there if they could so choose. It's hard to make it worth risking other people's lives to try and retrieve bodies. How many bodies do we leave though? Do we leave every single one? Would there be a point where there's just too many bodies on it? Lol
People don't understand that to retrieving a body near the summit of Everest is almost as complicated as going to the moon. Plus, the costs involved can be prohibiting. Also, by " rescuing" another climber, you are putting your life in jeopardy, and it is next to impossible if that climber is not able to walk.
One possible solution is that the climber not be allowed to attempt the summit unless they have body retrieval” insurance” in case of death or serious injury. Kind of like not being allowed to operate a car without insurance. That puts the burden on the climber. Just a thought.
There are plenty of bodies,( like green boots), that are visible to climbers and are used as landmarks. They do not dissuade people from climbing. Better to have a mandatory pre climb class to show the bodies, relay statistics and generally outline the risks of trekking to Everest so climbers can be completely informed.

It may be a humbling reminder to other climbers, but it feels important that the mountain holds those it claims.
They should remove the bodies and have them cremated then if the climber wanted, their ashes can be scattered on Everest. The mess left behind at the various camps by climbers is disgusting. The mountain isn’t a dumping ground, it is a magnificent emblem of beauty.
The companies that bring them should pay to remove them. They can charge these rich people an extra “removal fee” that will be used if they don’t make it.

In fact other’s deaths motivate these thrill seekers to do it more, thinking they can survive it. Makes them feel more “alive” seeing others perish 😡👹

Evil very evil...
Every word you said is spot on.
I think each climber should fill out a final requests form and a will incase they don’t make it back.
This way they can have their wishes met to either remain on the mountain or not, but more importantly, have their families / loved ones receive their estate, inheritances or whatever else the climbers wanted to leave for whomever.
If you’re going to climb Everest you should probably have your will in order
There are valid reasons to remove these deceased climbers. As global warming increases at an alarming rate, run off fluids from the corpses could contaminate the water consumed by the healthy climbers. The sanctity of the human body left in open mountainous areas is a real concern.According to family traditions, the deceased should receive a final blessing and proper burial and/or cremation. The retrieval and end of life final cost should be the responsibility of the surviving family members .If this is not possible, then the deceased climbers should have a grave site on the mountain, in a bed of stone, snow and ice. Keeping the mountain clean and clear of corpses and debris is the most respectful way to keep our planet safe for future generations.❤
So, people decide to go up. They should get down on their own.
No one but they decided to go where they could die No, the risk is too great to retrieve bodies. The people who go up should be smart enough to take care of themselves. Leave the bodies as a reminder of the perils. It may give some folks pause and lead them to a smart decision to go back down before it is too late. Big woop, for those who climbed a mountain. It's not like they brought peace to the world, stopped hunger, or abuse. Do something for others with your time, energy and money.

Families and friends have to understand that climbers have made their peace and know the risks involved. They know it’s a 50/50 shot of success or failure. If it was me, I would want to stay on the mountain. I wouldn’t want someone risking their lives just to recover my body. Just let me rest and know I died happy.
To all climbers, thank you for capturing the beautiful scenes of your expeditions. I can experience places like Everest, K2, Manaslu, Nanga Parbat through your eyes.
How incredible to be among those frozen peaks
They must of been petrified knowing they were going to die, quite disturbing!! God bless them all, and may they be at peace.🙏🕊😢
They don't think it's 50/50. That's really pushing it. I guarantee you every one of those climbers had a 95/5 mental standard. None of them actually think they're going to die.
@@oceanbreeze1897 Anyone that goes and takes the mountain for granted, usually doesn’t make it back.
I agree 100% I would NEVER want some one to RISK their life to recover my Dead body, leave me there and nature will take care of my remains.
Depends on what the family wants. The climber doesn't care.
and it mostly comes down to money but even then it depends on where he dies some people die in places that are extreamly hard to get to.
Those are the beauty of Everest, a part of history
If you can’t stand up and walk, then you will be "abandoned". No one is obligated to carry you down. It's nearly impossible and just too risky. Everyone is well aware of this risk before they attempt Everest.
A this stage it is next to impossible to remove most of the bodies from Everest, or probably even bury them.
Never underestimate the power of humans
Im surprised they havnt made Concrete/steel buildings at each camp as a warm/wellness center
Random avalanche and hard rock ground.
The guides did not abandon them. They aren’t paid to risk their lives to carry dead bodies down the mountain. There’s a reason why it costs so much to recover later because it is extremely risky to carry that body weight down.
They should remain there. It’s no secret that several people die on that mountain every year and recovery crews shouldn’t have to risk their lives retrieving the dead. People forget that those who try to retrieve the bodies, especially from the death zone, have to carry their own food and equipment which can be heavy so retrieving a dead body on Everest is one hell of a risky job.
Leave them there ,There's a price to Pay ,They all knew it
I think those who die in mountain should remain in mountain
That frozen corpse was very unsettling.
They should be placed in terrifying poses and forever serve as a warning to others...
They continue upward knowing that each step could be the last decision they ever make; in some ways analogous to what some people do with substance use (abuse). They know the risk, they willingly (albeit at times with certain levels of compulsion) take it, still determined even when it is truly ultimate. This is a fascinating if not disturbing glimpse into human nature, for better or worse.
Yes. You say human nature, but its more ego and selfishness. Not all humans are like that. Only the sort that want their egos stroked. Personally I can't think of anything worse, I'd rather take my chances with a great white shark! At least I'd be dead, quicker! But I won't be doing that in a hurry! I get that some people may want to do it to prove something to themselves, but I'm sure they could think of something a bit safer and a bit cheaper. It's a rich persons past time. Rich people, with more money, than sense. If some of best climbers die up there, that must prove its riskyness. Rich people would be better off giving their money to charity, what a waste! And then they lose their lives, what about their loved ones? Leave the mountain alone, take home their rubbish. If humans were supposed to go there, there would be a community living up there, there isn't, and that's for a reason!
@@rowannestripe2964 so true, well stated
Depends on the person. Most mountaineers will prefer to stay where they lay. They believe that’s their fait. I would. Mostly because they know how extremely dangerous a recovery is and would not want to endanger anyone else’s life for their remains.
They are dead they have no idea where they are
Who cares what a thrill seeker wanted? Not even their country and so they’re allowed to pollute it????
If it was a member of my family I would want them back ... people know the risks!
I think you’ll enjoy this video about bringing bodies home: Bring My Husband Home - Deliverance From 27,000 Feet #everest #mountains #podcast

I believe their bodies should stay forever on the mountain ,its the love of this sport that got them there in the first place....
Cover them with a flag of their Country. Let them rest in Peace.
Nope! They are dead. They don't care. A flag just adds more trash to the dump that people have created up there....
Yeah, bring up more shit and cover dead bodies with it. A flag will definitely stay on there for a long time, not like some of the strongest winds on earth up there or anything haha
They’re not at peace if they died in their sin; they’re all burning now and tormented & tortured by demons in Hell❗️
When I died those two times the last thing that was on m mind wasn’t which God or religious representation of him do I pray to, or how do I get things sorted and straightened out between us before I die. It was more about why are my body organs shutting down and what is this ice cold feeling creeping through my body, why has my spirit come out of my body⁉️
All these people know what will happen to them if they die, so no lives should be risked to remove them.
Imagine having to abandon a person
They should remain there with Green Boots!!! 😳
Do you need 300 reminders?
Let the departed souls n bodies be there only. Their love for mighty Everest will remain forever.
I have been climbing over corpses is part of the experience, and they’re literally landmarks. They shouldn’t be taken off the mountain
After watching a lot of videos and reading, my opinion is they should not risk other lives to bring bodies down of those who passed up there. It is hard to deal with, but those climbers know if they die their bodies will be left up there.
Yes, I'm generally of the same mind.... However, in the case of this story, the team made a ton of money going up there...so, it would be hard to keep them from doing it
@@EverestMystery The money was too good to pass up and I understand that.
The tour company they went up with should be responsible for taking all bodies and trash back down.
Nope, leave em up there.
Kick green boots for good luck!
It shouldn't be a government issue. It should be the loved ones who decide if the deceased would want to stay, or come home.
It’s the mountains way of saying ‘ Have FN respect for me and DO NOT CLIMB ME!!!’ I feel sorry for the locals of having to put up with so many tourists.
May all who lost their lives rest in peace and remain there in Mount Everest
Dude, they are frozen mountain garbage. They should pushed off into the crevices. Out of sight
They should stop anybody and everybody from climbing that mountain. They leave all their gear all their air tanks all their tents. And nobody cleans it up
Banning is not solution
The climbers are the only thing up there why should they be banned? You live in a house that makes trash should we ban that as well?
@@JoeZUGOOLA The difference is that the home owner doesn't just dump the faeces, urine, and trash out in their front yard or the street. They pay to have it dealt with: sewerage rates deal with faeces and urine, council rates deal with trash removal.
Take only pictures, leave only footprints.
@@JoeZUGOOLA If someone came to your home and dumped trash, poop pee, damaging your home knocking holes. You think that's ok? Mt. Everest is a gift from the Creator and look how it's been treated. Would you keep saying "hey everyone keep coming to my home and destroying it" if you die I will just shove your carcass to the side to make room for the next fool to break their families hearts to fulfill selfish wants. I don't understand it, any of it.
