Browning BAR 30-06

- This is an old gun I received from my father many years ago. He never really got into deer hunting back when I was a kid so he let me use it a couple of times and as a stupid kid I scratched it all up. He ended up giving it to me when I was around 30. In this video, I talk a little bit about this rifle and then I take it to the range and shoot it

Superb presentation of your rifle with loving stories of your family. Nothing is more dear to a man than a firearm owned by his father or grandfather.
Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
I used to oogle over the Browning catalogs when I was a kid and never imagined that I’d ever be able to afford one. I have worked hard for it, but consider myself very fortunate to now own several Browning rifles and shotguns. Last year, I was finally able to find my BAR. It’s a Mark II in .300 Win and topped with a Leupold 4.5-14 VXIII. I’m a little embarrassed to say that I wasn’t able to make time to sight it in to use this season, so I’ll have to wait for 2024.
My father didn’t hunt, so I don’t have any handed down guns. I’m a little bit jealous of those of you who get to shoot and take game with your father or grandfathers rifle. I can only hope that when my collection gets passed on to my children, that they can enjoy successful hunts with them and hopefully look back fondly on the times they hunted with me.
As for your inconsistent accuracy, I have two things you might try. The first is that your rest has you in a bit of an awkward position. The rifle is quite low on your shoulder. You may get it dialed in at the range, but you may be off from what you’d expect when shooting game. Second, the recoil is causing that rest to move around quite a bit on you. Weighing it down some and/or adding something to the bottom that will give more friction against the bench should help improve consistency at the range. Hope that helps, and hope you have many more successful seasons with that rifle!
Thanks for the comment.
As a bar owner my self ...in 2506 and 338 win mag ...these rifles are very accurate with hand loads I’m able to produce 3/4” groups ...browning the best there is...cheers from Canada
I didn't know they were chambered for either of those loadings.
Can you legally own and use your Bar’s in Canada?
I would imagine you can biased upon his post. I think the bans are for high capacity but I could be wrong @@ckiefner715

Yes you can
En Europe 3 coups Max en semi-auto 😂
That is a great example of quality gunsmithing. Browning quality and well preserved! Great video, love the old family gun stories!
Thanks!
Genuine, a very high quality gun, equal or even better than a custom gun.
Bar owner here. First 2-3 shots will be accurate (where the gun truly is shooting), after that need to let the barrel cool or will start seeing the group open up. Kinda makes it a pain sighting in but for hunting purposes will never have that many shots anyway.
My grandpa was doing well in 1975, bought a brand new cadillac coupe deville, a new harley SX(T?)125 and a pair of matching 1969 Browning semi autos (BAR 308 and AUTO5 12 gauge).
He sold the vehicles but I got the guns!
They are so damn nice!
Nice !
I'm subbed to probably 200 channels, but this one is always in my top 5. Its a good day when we get a new upload from Fudd Life!
Thank you for the kind words! I'm truly blessed to have a great subscriber like you Joshua. Comments like that keep me making videos.
That was about $56 Canadian,That's why I plink with 22lr and 9mm. But would I ever love to have that rifle! Great video Fuddlife!
I bought the BAR MKll in the early 90s 30.06. I've shot many bucks with it on Tug Hill NY. It's very accurate and it has never Jammed on me. It's only negative is its heavy.
Its a bit heavy I agree but worth the weight I think.
Yup same here, toss up between my fathers Remington pump 30/06 or the Browning auto 30/06, i told my pop, no worries i will be happy with both some day. LOl i will use it as a back up.
The best 30-06 Browning BAR factory loads are Browning ammunitions...The 155 BXR and 180 BXC both shoot sub moa in mine, if they can be found where you live. Hand loads with Speer hot-Cor 165 and 180 grains are both sub moa as well. Same for TTSX with max loads from Barnes manual.
My rifle likes Hornady 168 gr. ELD match over 47.8 gr. IMR 4064 leaves one ragged hole at 100 yd.
Enjoyed the video. Just got a new Mark II Safari in 30-06. Great guns.
Glad you enjoyed it thanks for watching. You will for sure enjoy the BAR !!
I have hunting with a bar since I was 12 so 21 years I will never hunt with anything else I had the same year 30.06 for my first browning without the engravings. Now I use a bar safari have 6 in total now great guns
Wow six! I look for them every tome I go to a gun show but haven't made a deal yet.
Perfect timing. mounting my scope on my new bar safari mk ll chambered in .270 Winchester. Beautiful rifle and great video thanks for sharing
Thanks! I'm a 270 Win. fan too.
Great overall caliber, I've taken down over a dozen moose in Canada with the Safari model. Also, the gun has never jammed on me in thirty years.
I had one jam in one that my brother owned which was in 308 . I replaced the recoil spring and and buffer, that cured it.
Probably never gonna get that beautiful rifle sighted in with a blistering hot barrel. Owned 3 in my 60 years of shooting: 270, 30-06, and the 308. My best accuracy was with the 308. Wish I still had it.
I never heat a barrel too much now days. LOL I got a lot of SKS barrels smokin hot back in the day.
Hard to believe youve been hunting with it since youre 19, its looks literally brand new.
Its had a pretty easy life I hunt a few days a season and for several years it was covered with gun chaps and tape when I borrowed it from my dad.
My dad re finished the wood after I damaged it. Its not like I dragged it across Montana for sure.
I have 2 of your gun, love them
@littlesilver2205
I know there is 2 different kinds, one is made in Belgium and another in Utah and other Countrys, I know the price tag on the original was made in Belgium and Utah, and other Countrys. This gun is made for Deer hunting, never had a problem always recycled, excellent firearm, next to my fathers Remington 30/06 pump thats very accurate. lol
I understand i got a ass chewing from my dad was cutting across a field and a brangus bull charged me I ran through a barbwire fence when I looked at my dads 22mag it was scratch up bad but he sanded it down and refinishing it and told me to go buy one don't borrow or loan guns lessons learned from Dad
I use to have a 30 06 I have been hand loading for 40 +years and have a pet load 165 Hornady IL powder IMR4350 56.5 grains, if you hand load and have the reloading books you check on this load, I also would double check any load from an unknown input, sure wish I had that rifle still but I sold it years back and bought back a short mag BLR it is also a sweet shooter has a little more snap than the 06 but it sure isn't necessary 06 has plenty of power, anyway I found that load to be very good and those IL bullets are getting a bit easier to find, the powder and primers are still alittle tough to find, shoot small and have fun, hope the load shrinks your group,a light cleaning can keep you shooting straight, good hunting .
Thanks. I may have stumbled on a sweet load for it recently while loading for a different rifle. I'll probably do an update if the load pans out.
Mine dates back to 1959 according to the serial number
Got a 1967 vintage bought in 1980 30-06
Nice! grade 2 also?
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Great rifle.
Thanks
Sir I've acquired the same identical Rifle from my Dad. It was his Deer hunting rifle, and I'd like to know what can I use to wipe down the outer bluing part of the rifle and also the walnut stock. My house is in a controlled environment but I want to make sure I do the right thing to keep the rifle in best condition possible. Thank you so much for sharing that great video also 👍👍.
I use Ballistol but any high quality gun oil will preserve the metal parts. I use an otters gun cloth to wipe my guns down after use. The most important thing I do is use a dehumidifier where I store my guns. I try to keep the humidity around 50% relative humidity.
@@fuddlife Wow thank you so much I really appreciate that information im going to do that forsure. Sir if my home has an Ac unit would that be enough for the humidity or would I still need to use the dehumidifier?
@@Anth4044 It depends on where you live. I live in a humid area and I need to keep it dry or I will have rust problems.
You have a fine rifle. Southern Iowa has all kinds of deer waiting for you. Processing fees will eat the money in your pockets.
I process my own I do not trust any one else with the job.
beautiful rifle,
Thanks!
My bar l used remington 150 gr
We shoot a hornady 150 grain btsp, 52 grains of 4064. Great load for us. Crono at 2950 fps.
I have had great success with HDY ELD match 168 gr and 48 gr of IMR 4064. Its the best group I have had yet in this rifle. I found it by chance while loading for another rifle. I tried a few in the browning and whala 10 shot groups the size of a quarter
Wow that's too hot
2950 too hot
WOW, that's immaculate!
I had a bar in the early 90's in 30-06 and couldn't get it to group worth a flip so I sold it. Likely a huge mistake. Back then I was buying Remington core lock from Walmart for like 12 buck's I think. I didn't know about the barrel heating, so maybe I should have tried a bunch of different expensive ammo first.
I'm looking for one now.
I want a 308 but they're impossible to find.
You have to try different loadings to find one that the rifle likes. Most of the loads I have tried have been acceptable for hunting around the four or five MOA. I haven't found the Goldie lox load that's just right and I have been shooting the rifle for years. To be fair to the rifle I haven't really tried to zero in on a specific bullet or powder. My brother had the 308 version and he developed a great load for his so I know the rifle is capable of good accuracy. Good luck and thanks for watching!
That Hornady SST 165 gr ammo is about $2.80 a round Canadian- Yikes!
Yep . You have to roll your own to shoot the stuff.
Excellente pour la chasse
C’est le même prix en Europe, sinon il faut recharger mais depuis le covid, les guerres, les composants ont doublés et contingent.
A very good video,i appreciate. You have fouling in the bore and a cop, because i have one samething, with a 165 grains my grouping is .750 inch maximum,i,m very serious.Thank,s for your video
I see another lefty like myself lol
I have same in 30 .o6 it has a Redfield wide view
I have a Redfield wide field on a 270 Its a great scope.
Mine is a 2x-7x Widefield
Barrel hot?
Many of the new Brownings just dont have the fit and finish they used to.
agreed.
All my new ones match my old ones for fit and finish.
Les anciennes browning de la FN herstal n’ont jamais été surpassée
How do you clean the barrel?
I use a pull through bore snake until I completely disassemble then I use a cleaning rod. I usually disassemble every couple of years.
Io voglio vedere come si toglie il poggia mano

Why in the world do you pound on the scope after adjusting
LOL I would call it tapping not pounding its an old guy trick to set the springs that support the inner tube. Probably not necessary with todays scopes just an old habit.
@@fuddlifeI’ve done that for years as well.
@@jasoncampbell2559 Old guy thing I guess.
