GLG (Green Lime Green - Female) is incubating her egg now for the 6th day. Her partner RLK (Red Lime Black - male) is out at sea foraging for food. When he returns, he will take over incubation of the their egg & GLG will go out to sea to forage for food. They both share in equal parenting of the egg and in raising their chick. The video opens with GLG getting up to take a brief wing stretch & then she shimmies right back down on the egg. One of the fascinating facts of the albatross is the length of time they spend incubating the egg with very little breaks in between. The incubating parent will not eat or drink during their time on the nest - they will wait for their mate to return & then fly off to find food. The incubating parent can be on nest for days, a week or longer each time. That is amazing dedication! We have some beautiful closeups of GLG as she is sleeping tucked in. You may notice her eyelashes - they are actually called rictal bristles and they may aid in nocturnal navigation, foraging for food & burrow nesting. They also provide protection to the eyes food parts, debris & flying particles. Ranger Colin comes to the nest and he whistles beforehand so that GLG will wake up and he does not startle her (timestamp 05:11) He then gently puts his hand underneath her which causes her to rise up. Ranger Colin is checking the bands to see who is on the nest (GLG or RLK) and also does a quick egg check. The rangers keep meticulous notes on how many days each parent is on the nest incubating. They have in some cases, had to give fluids or feed the incubating parent when they have been there for two weeks. This prevents dehydration & nest abandonment by the parent while they wait for their partner to return. The rangers play a crucial role in the success of the colony and the fledging of the chicks each season. Timestamp: Ranger Colin nest check 05:11

The ❤Royal Albatross❤are such heartwarming birds!💕 The fact that they don't eat or drink for days, a week or longer while incubating, is impressive.😮😔 They are so unique!❤ God bless the oceans with plenty of squid! 🐙🙏🏽 Tysm for sharing and for the great description Lady Hawk! May you and all friends have a blessed weekend!🙏🏼🙌🏼🫂♥️
Thank you very much, Lady Hawk, for all your fascinating information about these birds. I have never viewed them until now. Amazing that they allow human interaction.
Those Beautiful closeups of Sleeping Beauty GLG💚With her Angelic face was just adorable 😇💞 The Dedication and Devotion of these Gergous Albatrosses are just Outstanding! Protecting her Precious egg 🥚 ❤..Ranger Colin is just so gentle and trusting , Great work by the Rangers Thankyou for their Dedication too💙 Dear Lady Hawk ❤, This was a Beautiful update along with the literature with great Appreciation Tysvm my friend ❤, Wishing you and all Friends a Wonderful blessed weekend 🌹🤗🥰🙏
Another wonderful opportunity to thank Ranger Colin and all the Rangers for everything they do for these magnificent birds.😊 During these times I always find myself thinking about the amazing fact that-while albies mate for life-this is the only time GLG and RLK will actually see each other. Once the post-guard stage begins, it will only be a coincidence that the two parents wind up at th same place at the same time…and so it will remain for almost two years, when they return to breed again. The season brings many such opportunities to contemplate the unique life-cycle of the albies. Many thanks for this, as always, Lady Hawk… wishing you and everyone here a wonderful weekend!😊
Thanks for this lovely video - right back to sleep shortly after Colin's egg check! I didn't see her budge after the gull left w/nesting grasses! ❤️ ->(Eric T.)
@ - Hiya👋 @girlboss - I found the Albies when Manaaki was a fledgling…they sure are fabulous❣️ I follow hummingbird YT channels and bald eagles too❣️ And the polar 🐻❄️ bears while our precious Katmai Brooks River bears 🐻 are down for their winter naps❣️ Fun to see you too❣️

❤ @ladyhawk thank you for this beautiful post and explanation on these amazing birds! Can you please let everyone know how long incubation time is? Also, you mention they have a fertile egg, and I would like to know how is that known? I understand they mated, but can't the egg not hatch just like the Eagles?
