" these are like my Mom's doughnuts, like really they taste like them"...THIS is what a good husband / spouse would say and do!! Even if they didn't taste exactly like his Mom's (maybe they did!!) He did exactly what a good kind spouse should do after your spouse put so much effort into making something you ate as a child. Trisha is an exemplary spouse for trying SO hard to learn all of her husbands traditions. This is a woman who had barely mastered making mac n cheese from a box a few short years ago ...to today she is a good confident cook making complicated dishes and even made a complete Thanksgiving meal with Turkey and all the fixings and it turned out amazing! Trisha the fact that you even attempted a VERY complicated baked goods like doughnuts which I haven't truly mastered and I bake a lot and I'm 54, speaks volumes to your willingness to learn new things and not be scared to just try. Baking, as many have said already, is not like cooking. Cooking you can "measure with your heart" as many chefs say, you season to your specific taste - you like lots of garlic you add lots of garlic, you don't care for garlic you leave it out completely. Baking, if you leave out an ingredient the entire thing could fail and be inedible. Hope this helps to show how different cooking and baking are. The fact that you made doughnuts you could actually eat, and they seemed to be tasty, is a HUGE accomplishment!!! As other also suggested, just keep making these on a regular basis, like try them once a month or so when you have some time. I'm sure your MIL would be happy to walk you through some of the stages and you will be perfecting these in no time. Again...the fact that you a) attempted something so difficult and b) they turned out so well ...is AH-MAZING!!!!! You are one amazing momma and wife! 💗

hi trish! remember, baking is a science, you have to be very precise unlike cooking where you just do it with your heart! it looks like you didn't let the yeast activate for a few mins in the warm milk and sugar mixture before you started the rest of the recipe which is probably why you were struggling with the dough. I'm glad you're trying to learn how to bake now, its difficult but very rewarding!

Tips for yeast donut recipe: when using active dry yeast it's best to take the 110° milk and it should be exactly 110° use a thermometer if it's too hot it will kill the yeast. Put the milk sugar and yeast together to make sure that the yeast is alive stir it let it sit for about 10 minutes if it does not foam up a little it's not active so the yeast may be dead always use freshly bought yeast don't use yeast that's been sitting around in your cupboard for a while it may not be active anymore. When you're mixing the dry and the wet ingredients together don't add the salt until the ingredients have already been stirred together somewhat because salt can kill the yeast as well. The eggs and the butter need to be room temperature don't use cold butter and eggs when you're doing this. Although Trisha did this by hand it would be much easier to use a stand electric mixer with the dough hook it will come together a lot easier. It appears that Tricia's doe is a little too wet before she turned it out onto the counter so I don't think she put enough flour in it originally. You have to coat your hands and flower so that the dough doesn't stick to them you have to put quite a bit of flour on the counter and then more flour on top of the dough when you touch it and you have to keep adding more flour on the counter on your hands to keep it from sticking. After flowering all sides of the dough and the counter and your hands fold the dough in half and then push your heel of your hand into it then Fold It Again turn it a quarter of a turn and then push your heel of your hand into the dough again and keep repeating that. The dough should be more of a Play-Doh consistency you should be able to cleanly fold the dough it shouldn't be sticky like hers. Her dough appears to not have risen at all so I think her yeast was not active her milk may have been either too cold or too hot her yeast may have been dead who knows but her dough did not rise.

Tips for this recipe: flour is definitely needed when you are making yeast dough, it shouldn't be sticky. It appears Trish's dough did not rise at all. When you cut out Donuts don't use a cup you need to use a cookie cutter a donut cutter or a biscuit cutter that has sharp edges and you cut by pressing straight down you don't twist like she did cuz that pretty much seals the edges and the dough won't puff when you fry it. Her dough should have been at least an inch thick when she cut the donuts out it's way too thin. It's there are no air bubbles in the bread so it didn't rise properly so these are not going to be very good Donuts. Making a yeast dough is very difficult and making donuts is a advanced baking skill so I commend Trisha for at least trying to do this. She might have better luck just taking a tube of Pillsbury biscuits and frying those ,they will turn out a little bit better. Or she could try to make cinnamon rolls which are a lot easier because you don't have to cut out donuts and fry it you just roll it out put cinnamon and sugar on it roll it up cut the cinnamon rolls let them rise and then cook them.

Tips for the Latka recipe: If you have a food processor with a grater attachment use that ,potatoes Brown very quickly when exposed to air when you're trying to grate them. You have to grate really fast. Squeeze as much liquid out of the onion and potato as you can before you make them. You could also grate up some zucchini and throw it in there. If you cracked eggs into a small bowl and mix them up in there before you pour into the potato mixture it will mix easier and faster. Be sure and season them thoroughly before frying. I've never heard of latka's being made with panko , I've only heard of just putting some flour in the mixture. Tricia said these were panko crimes but those appear to be regular bread crumbs to me. I also wouldn't try to press these as much as Tricia . the easiest way is to put a spoonful into the frying pan and then use the spoon to form the mound into a circular type of Patty. You're not really going to be able to form a patty that will stick together b4 putting into the oil. You don't want the latkes to be more than about a half inch thick. You're not going to be able to form these into a Patty like a hamburger. The mixture is not really going to stick together just scoop a large Spoonful into the frying pan of oil and then Pat it down into a Patty shape. A lot easier way to do this would be to use frozen hash browns instead of grating the potato just grate some onion and then throw it together. They'll be a lot less liquid in it and it'll be a lot easier to make. The way Tricia is pressing these together they're going to be very dense and you want them to be light like a tater tot. So you want the outside to be crispy and the inside to be soft but cooked through. I would just heat up the pan with the oil in it put the bowl of lot to mix next to it and use a large spoon to scoop up a mound put it in the oil and then flatten it down into a patty. Don't try to form a Patty like she's doing like a hamburger. I think her oil is a little too hot as well it should be on just above medium if you have a thermometer It should read about 350 to 375°, if it's more than that it's too hot. I also would only use about a half inch of oil in the bottom of a pan not as much as she was using ,these don't need to be deep fried they need to be sauteed.

And easier cheat way to make a filled donut is to use canned biscuits and just fry those. The frying oil should be 375°, not any hotter it will burn or brown the outside of the dough too much and the inside won't be cooked through. It would be easier to fill these donuts with a ziplock bag filled with the filling cut the corner off the bottom and pipe it in rather than using a knife. Trisha put a lot of work in but I don't think the yeast was active so even if she had done this the right way they probably wouldn't have risen anyway cuz the yEast was not active. Great and triumphant attempt. She stayed positive throughout and never had a meltdown.

You’re really blessed Trish like fish 💖
I love to bake. Normally you need to leave the milk sugar and yeast mixture for ten minutes I think until you see it bubbling/foaming. Yeast are live bacteria and they multiply by feeding the the sugar and produce carbon dioxide hence the bubbling. Then you add to dry ingredients.
Also need to use exact measuring cups for flour. I love science so baking is like a science experiment to me 😊
    You learn so quickly 👍☺

Girrrl.... Scuse me, Momma Trish! You need a hand mixer with dough hooks or a bougie one that sits on the table lol that mixes it for you, stainless heat resistant silicone spatulas, and measuring cups on a hook. These items makes a world of difference ❤

Because you added that extra egg white you should've added more flour so that it wouldn't be so sticky. Proud of you though, trying new things can be really scary so keep trying and they'll be better next year xxxx

Trisha you don’t know the definition of baking if you say you’ve never done it before. You’ve baked lasagna, chicken, ziti, and I’m sure a lot more. Baking is simply putting a food in the oven instead of cooking it on the stove top or a grill. I think what you’re trying to say is you’re not good at desserts or pastries.
When making pastries or desserts you have to be precise with your measurements because there’s a science aspect to it. That’s probably why you think you’re not good at it. The flour has to be leveled, and you have to follow the recipes exactly. Use measuring spoons, measuring cups, and make sure everything is level & precise.
When making a dough I wouldn’t use a whisk I would use a wooden spoon or a spatula. Otherwise everything inside the whisk isn’t getting mixed properly and you’ll lose a lot of the food because it’s stuck to the whisk. That food is easier to scrape off of a spoon or a spatula.
When kneading dough, make sure your surface is heavily floured as well as your hands. Flour on your hands will prevent it from sticking to them. Once the dough is sticking to your hands, you can’t just add flour you have to wash your hands and dry them and then start over. For what it’s worth I don’t think your dough had enough flour in it, that’s why it was so wet and soupy. If you had leveled your flour perfectly in the measuring cup that might not have happened.
You could’ve added more flour after the fact without having to start over. Just need to make sure it’s well incorporated. It would have eventually stopped sticking to you and the counter if you had just gradually added more flour.
