I’m so sick of people saying he’s trying to sound like Robert Plant. You can’t “ try” to have a voice like that. You’re born with it. Also it’s different than Plant’s. Some people may like the sound of his voice, some may not. That’s a matter of taste. Personally I like his lower register better, and I like his “yodel” roll (Plant didn’t really do that). Josh is undeniable talented. Same with the rest of the band. Jake is great on the lead guitar, Sam is a talented bassist and also plays keyboards, and Danny is really growing on the drums. I’ve seen them live and I can promise you, their sound is not “studio” produced and the song writing are their own originals. I think quite a few of todays artists can’t say the same. So happy there is a young rock band that is filling decent sized venues. Saw them at the Greek Theater in L.A. where they sold out two nights in a row, and the fans were very enthusiastic and were from all age groups. Got introduced to them by a friend who happened to see them at Coachella a few years ago, and he said they were the talk of Coachella. I agree they look a little weird, I don’t like the costumes. But I guess people may have said the same about other rock people in the past (think Freddie Mercury, Elton in some of his get-ups). And no I’m not saying Greta is in the same league- but I’m just saying that makes me be able to look past the funny outfits and listen to the music. They are so young- looking forward to many more years of growth and good music from Greta.

Your analysis is amazing! Thank you so much for breaking it all down for us. This band keeps getting better and it's gratifying to hear a talent like yourself, praising them for what they do. So many tear them down, but you have such a great attitude about them and really understand all that goes into their playing and Josh's vocals. I've always enjoyed watching your vids and hope you bring more analysis of GVF tunes our way! 😊☮️

Whether you like them or not atleast they are actually singing and playing live. So many newer bands are playing alot of their studio mixes with their live performances making it seem cheap or fake. Today so much studio recording music in not just pop but in country music and rock music uses beat detective and autotune making the music IMO sound like more machine then humans in playing. Beat detective in Rick Beato's opinion takes the groove out of the music and also autotune takes the humanity out of music in his opinion as well. Hell some even autotune live. Beat detective and autotune are good if used just to correct minor mistakes but to use it entirely is over kill of this technology. Don't understand why people would want the drums to sound like a machine then actual real drums and don't understand why people go for this robotic pitch correction effect, autotune instead of using your real voice for an entire song which is often the case in pop music. Can't imagine Tom Petty autotuned for example because his natural voice is so unique and love hearing it raw and real even if some of these so called record producers will say that autotune can fix his flaws in the studio. I love the flaws because humans are naturally supposed to have these flaws. We aren't machines but apparently music is going in this direction with technology being overly used to correct these natural human flaws. I will take natural human flaws over this pitch correction robotic effect anytime in music.

Led Zeppelin is one of the hater's desert island bands. Meaning, that they have been on a desert island since they first heard Zeppelin. These are the same kind of people that trashed Derek Trucks when he took over for Dicky Betts in the Allman Brothers (even though he was clearly every bit as skilled, if not better). The haters are also the people who constantly say that there is no-one making good music anymore. I am 60 years old and have not been this excited about new bands in almost 30 years .Greta Van Fleet are just barely not kids anymore, and clearly only go from strength to strength on their way to greatness.

As their name implies they dress as maids and sing in Japanese. I know, I thought that they were all gimmick. There live performances are actually superior in most cases than their MVs. A good place to start is their live performances of Domination and their live instrumental Onset. Much of their music has a 70s hard rock vibe and their musicianship is outstanding.

I find it interesting how those who call GvF (or any other band, for that matter) a Led Zeppelin rip-off band, often seem to be the ones lamenting that "Music like that just isn't made anymore".
Personally, I find that there are a few places in Josh's lower register (if you can call it that 😀) where there's an uncanny likeness to Robert Plant. But I fail to see how being somewhat similar to someone else should bar you from performing. That's a very narrow-minded attitude. If that's how you feel, you are perfectly within your rights to not listen, but I fail to see the value of announcing it to the public. It's not like bands like Greta van Fleet will cause Led Zeppelin to fade into obscurity...

The Battle At Garden's Gate is a great album. What a shame that part of this analysis was blocked. Copyright can be a bit heavy handed and unwarranted at times. Love the little tips. It's great that the entire guitar can be seen in the video, not just a portion so it's clear what is being played. With my campfire grade acoustic playing, I'm nowhere near as good at the ear training to know what is being played by just listening. Unlike some insane people including Rick I-know-what-riff-they-will-use-before-the-song-even-properly-starts Beato. :-D That may be easy for many people, but certainly not for beginners.
Plus mentioning what gear is used is not always done in the analysis/tutorial videos. Very nice.
Interesting notion about "safe rasp" at the beginning of the video. It would be cool to see videos that aim at this topic. Some singers have problems after belting, growling, shrieking without a proper safe technique. Especially death metal and black metal singers should obviously know what they are doing. But it's not just more extreme metal. I have seen an interview with Sebastian Bach where he talked and sounded like a cartoon character. I have heard rumours about singers like Jonas Renkse and Magali Luyten having problems with their voices because of the unsafe use of those techniques, but I don't know how much truth is in those rumours. Jonas Renkse supposedly cannot growl anymore, but I have heard him use a great sounding growl in Ayreon 01011001 album, specifically in The Sixth Extinction song, so that rumour seems to be false? I don't know about Maggy Luyten. Supposedly, she cannot sing clean anymore? That would be shame, as much as I love her rasp that sounds like a child of Janis Joplin and R.J. Dio.She is one of my favourite female rock singers (Beautiful Sin, Nightmare, Virus IV). In the more recent live performance (Ayreon live), she didn't sound completely clean, but she could regulate just how much rasp she had in each song and she played a character originally sang by Russell Allen, so maybe it was just an artistic choice? The same may go for Jonas Renkse, Katatonia has a specific sound and he is supposed to blend in. IDK.

I was looking on ou Tube and came across a band that as trying to imitate Greta Van Fleet. They did a pretty good job, but it seems they use a lot of material that they don't give credit to the originals. Those guys should try to be more like GVF and really have their roots in classic rock and blues while sounding like themselves. And the guitar player sure could have worked on his little finger technnique. That's what impressed me about GVF and you Fil, is that you can use that little finger at will.
There is a neurological problem that can weaken the little finger, and a simple pressure on a bone in the wrist can help that. As I've said, if you want to do a video about maintaining hands and wrists in good shape for guitar players could be a good idea on your channel.
