That's not exactly right, please change the title of the video... it works if you're on the same network.. but not from anywhere in the world. If you want to do so, you'll need to use NAT on your router and use your router's Internet facing IP (or to make it easier use a dynamic dns provider, like no-ip for example, so you won't have to worry about the IP changing)..
Thank you! Just set this up for a used Mac mini I plan to have running in the background at home as a home server of sorts with all of our media and to run home assistant with a z-wave adapter for home automation. Not having to have a screen hooked up or have to have a keyboard or mouse is going to be great. Controlling it 100% from my MacBook Pro!
Does the Mac mini needs to be logged in for it to be connected or it just needs to be turned on? If it is the first case , then I guess you still need a monitor and a keyboard to log in first ? Thanks in advance for answering .
Hi, Thanks for sharing this solution, its really helpful. I have a question. If your accessing your iMac from a MacBook remotely, not on same network, can you wake it up if the Imac at home is sleeping ?
This only applies to a local network so unless the coffee shop was within range of your home wifi, you won't be able to connect to your other computer there. The IP address you hid is just a standard LAN IP no need to hide it.
did all this and still doesn't connect (remotely from different location). The iMac is showing the internal router address as the ssh.... shouldn't this be an external IP address?
@@corymelious3872 you need to direct it, when your router receives the request it will need "instructions" for what device you want to connect to, let's say you have multiple Osx connect to your router, you must instruct your router which route to take
Thanks - just used your clear instructions on my 2014 and 2018 Mac Minis, both running Monterey. In particular, I did not know how to use Screen/File sharing away from home, but now I do.
not working for me for some reason...anyone know why? (trying to access my older macbook remotely which on OSX 10.13.6 via my newer Macbook which is on OSX 10.14.6)
can you use browser like safari and chrome on the connected imac or only files are possible? I am currently overseas and some times i need to access websites e.g. credit cards, bank accounts which i cannot access through my own computer. Can I connect my macbook pro to an imac that is sitting in my office in the US warehouse and do all the above through browser? Thanks in Advance!!
Thank you for this!!! Do you know why I can't seem to hear the sound on my MacBook when mirroring? I have tried unplugging my headphones from my iMac but still no sound on my MacBook
Tyler please guide me how I can login my iMac at home from my MacBook pro on different Network. According to the vedio it works on the same network. Please help me on this matter. Thank you.
Very cool!!! I was just looking into this. Thank you. Questions. 1- Does my iMac at home need to be on for this to work? 2- can I restart my iMac at home remotely? 3- would I be able to fully control Lightroom remotely including edits? 4- that special code... do I need that every single time I'm away? Thank you for this! Super helpful.
So I'm trying this and I can't get it to work outside of my network. I had it all set up... went to a coffee shop and it couldn't connect. Is there any other software you are running? Called Apple and they said that it should only work locally and never remotely using terminal.
0Nice video, good job. Don't think so, but can the MBP and the iMac be on different OSX? ie: Monterey on iMac and Big Sur on laptop? Think so, just checking
sorry, the video kind of blurred, i know that you open the remote login and saw its "ssh", but just copy the ssh?, no need to have any other command at the end of copy result ? thx in advance
Hi there thanks a lot for the great tip! Just one more thing, do you know how to be able to listen to the sound of the computer your are remotely controlling please?
connection from an outside network does not work for me. Don't you need to open a port (make it public) for you to access your machine from an outside network? When I do the ssh, I don't get prompted for my password unless i'm on my home network.
I tried myself as you suggested but it DID NOT work, even from my laptop I CAN NOT see my iMac in sidebar? Also with terminal, when I paste link and enter, after some time it say "Operation timed out" Do you have any further suggestion for me?
Great video and very helpful. I'm trying to set this up on an iMac I bought for my dad so I can log in and help him as needed. I set up the iMac as instructed, but from my Macbook Pro, I pull up the terminal, enter the SSH but when it asked for the password, the lock icon is gray and won't let me enter anything. Can you tell me what I need to do to unlock this? Thanks!!
Setup file sharing, remote login, and remote management as shown in the video. If you have an iCloud account go to System Preferences - iCloud - tick the checkbox for Back to My Mac (replaces the need to run the ssh command). Do this on all your Macs. Now you will see all your Macs in Finder on left nav under Shared. Click the Mac you want to connect to. This will give access to your files or click the Share Screen button to use screen sharing.
what if your imac pro is on the eternet and the macbook is on wifi how do we connect ? and vice a versa, I would like to copy directly from the macbook to the imac when I am sharing screen how can I do this? thank you for your help
There should be an icon at the top that switched between a hand and a cursor. You may just be in "view only" mode which just let's you see. Try clicking the cursor icon if that gives you access to control everything!
Is there a way to use native keyboard shortcuts and mouse commands (ie: Modern Logitech Mice gestures with gesture buttons)? One issue I have with this screen share remote control system is that some keys like command + delete to delete all text in a password field does not work over screenshare.
Can i also use the same terminal command to start screen sharing? Tried the SSH command for connect as, but nothing happens after cursor moves down, why?
My dad is not very tech savvy. He needs my help using iMovie so he can edit videos. He has an iMac and so do I. Is there a way I can log into his iMac from mine so that I can take control of his mouse. It will be much easier for me to do the work for him instead of telling him to click on this and that the entire time. That’s exhausting. We do not live in the same home. So I am on my network and he is on his own as well. Your thoughts?
1:14...ok is this the host computer (control) or the client (computer to be controlled) that you are setting up? Can you explain it as if I never did this since I never did this?
The Herrintons Much appreciates! I tried to access my Mac from another WiFi using ssh. It worked, but I could only access file in terminal. How can I control the Mac completely (as you did under the same WiFi through Finder)
will you only be able to access your mac away from home by doing the 'back to my mac' option? Because using the ssh command does not work for me when trying to connect remotely when away from home.
Sorry to hear that! Things might have changed since making this video with new versions of Mac OS. I'd suggest checking some Apple forums with your specific issue.

i think this is the Local network remote controlling. it only allows you to work within the local network.

it should be your external IP and you need to set up you router to redirect any ssh request to your ssh server, in his case the iMac.

If you are logging for the first time you will find it under the network section in Finder.

XiaoJoplin that lock means it’s hiding your password. Just type your password and hit enter or return.
From a coffee shop, wouldn't you need the IP address for your home? That looks like the local IP address on your local network.
Good question...for me once I've set it up once, I see my home iMac from pretty much every internet connection I'm on thereafter.
I was thinking about this as well, maybe it's an iCloud thing?
