    Hi Jesse,
    Your video produced 3 years ago helped me a lot today!!! I bought a Mac Mini M1 from Costco to host a ROON Core music management software tied in with a Bluesound Node streamer for my stereo gear. You demo and instructions were spot on so I say a BIG THANK YOU for helping me to set up a headless mac mini with our iMac. Best to you👍👍

    • @AppleNinja
      @AppleNinja  Рік тому

      Virgil thank you and your setup sounds awesome! Just note that if your Mac Mini reboots there is a chance that it will not get the same IP. So what I do usually is use my router software on my phone which list all my devices with IP addresses. If you do not have that capability then you can use terminal app and look at your IP of Mac you are on and just start pinging other addresses. So if yours is 192.168.1.2, then type: ping 192.168.1.3 and so on till you find the correct device. You can also install the command line utility called nmap which is great at gathering info from devices on your network.
      Cheers bud and have a great night and enjoy the sweet setup😁.

    This is perfect for my use case.
    I have a mac mini on a stage taking a multitrack recording from a digital mixer (StudioLive Series III 24R) via the USB, but the tech booth is about 100ft away. So this will allow me to create a LAN where I can control the mac on stage from the mac in the tech booth.
    I was stressing myself out looking into Extenders, repeaters etc, when I could just use another Mac to control it.

    • @AppleNinja
      @AppleNinja  4 роки тому

      Tom that is awesome! You need to setup the ability to access his network. In this video both computers are on the same computer network.
      You would need to have port forwarding capabilities on the internet router at your clients house or you can use one of the below pieces of software. Setting up port forwarding, you would need to login to your clients router and port forward any traffic coming in on port 5900 to the Mac you want to control, using either a Hostname (URL) or IP address.
      To get the IP address of the Mac: 1. Open Terminal Application (Command + Spacebar and type Terminal hit enter).
      2. Type ifconfig and hit enter.
      To get the HostName (URL) of the Mac: 1. Open Terminal Application (Command + Spacebar and type Terminal hit enter).
      2. Type hostname and hit enter.
      Here are a few options that would allow the ability when not on the same network without configuring Port Forwarding on your Router:

    1 - It is possible to connect a Mac Mini (without keyboard, mouse, and screen) to a Macbook Pro and use the screen sharing in the Macbook Pro so i can use the monitor, keyboard and mouse trackpad of the Macbook Pro for the Mac Mini?
    2 - It is possible to power up a Macbook Pro, make the screen sharing program automaticly engage when the O.S is starting and loading, and then connect automaticly to the Mac Mini?, so it could be use like the way i describe in the 1st question without doing it manual everytime.

  • @barryzeeberg3672
    @barryzeeberg3672 Рік тому +1

    Thanks for your outstanding videos! I hope you can help me with my question about screen sharing.
    So call computer 1 the one in which we set "screen sharing" and computer 2 the one in which we set "remote management".
    I currently have 2 screens that I use on computer 1. I guess I will need to temporarily disconnect one of the screens and use that screen to boot up and set "remote management" on computer 2.
    After I have done that, can I then disconnect the screen from computer 2, and reconnect the screen to computer 1, so now computer 1 has 2 screens as I normally do, and computer 2 has no screens? That is, computer 2 does not need its own screen as I can see computer 2 through the shared screen on computer 1?
    ____________
    Another question - Do both computers need to be physically connected to my modem/router using an ethernet cable, or is it possible for computer 2 to be part of the network some other way, like through wi-fi (my modem/router has limited number of ethernet ports).
    If I do connect through wi-fi, is that a lot slower data transfer than connecting through an ethernet cable?

    • @AppleNinja
      @AppleNinja  Рік тому

      Hey Barry,
      Yes you can disconnect the monitor and reconnect to your main Mac 1 which will be using the Screen Sharing app on. Just keep in mind that if the Mac restarts from an update the IP address might change, which if you have an app for your router then you should be able to find the new IP without reconnecting the monitor to Mac 2.
      This video here is my latest Remote Mac video and shows how to setup port forwarding to access the Mac from outside your home network. ua-cam.com/video/4rAD3DyBnKo/v-deo.html
      The difference between WiFi and Ethernet connected has a lot of factors, like router type, Ethernet cable type, distance of WiFi and surrounding walls. The best way to find out is to test both scenarios and see which works best for you with your current setup and configuration.
      Good luck and hope this helps! Cheers!

    hi nice, question, I have started using two macbook airs, to hold my zoom one on one meetings. I used anydesk. However, looking at this this maye be better. If I want to use a webcam on the 'other' mac, so I can place it a bit further away, and control the zoom meeting off the one closest to me, how would you set it up? I use a logitech webcam and usb logitech headphones. Which ones do I plug those into? lastly, i record the sessions for the clients, so which one am I recording off ? many thanks, this would help thanks

    • @AppleNinja

      I think I understand what you are trying to do. The main issue is going to be the audio, because no audio transfers over the screen sharing session. You could record the meeting on the remote Mac with QuickTime player Screen Recording, but you’d need to have your headset and webcam plugged in there as well. Let me know what you try and what works for ya. Have a great weekend!

    "For Mac to Mac Remote Desktop Connection
    Go to System Preferences in the Apple menu at top left.
    Click on Sharing in the Internet & Wireless group.
    If necessary, click the lock at bottom left and enter your password to make changes.
    Put a check mark next to Screen Sharing on the left.
    Click the Computer Settings
    Put a check mark next to “VNC viewers may control screen with password:” and set a password to use for screen sharing.
    Click OK.
    Below that make sure it’s set to “Allow access for: Only these users.” Click the plus button at the bottom of the list.
    Select your name (or the name of the user account you use) from the list and click the Select button. If you would like to enable file sharing as well, put a check mark next to File Sharing on the left.
    By default every Mac OS user account gets a Public folder. Confirm that your user account (or the user account you use) has Read & Write access to that folder.
    One thing you’ll need to take with you: write down the IP address of the computer. In Screen Sharing it will be preceded by “vnc:” and in File Sharing it will be preceded by “afp:“. You will need this to connect from the remote computer. If you’d like, click the lock at bottom left to prevent further changes.
    Other easy MAC to MAC remote desktop options are logmein, R-HUB remote support servers etc. "

    what is the story to assist a friend where they need to share their screen with you while sitting behind a typical households broadband modem/router firewall, i.e. the macos equivalent of windows "quick assist"?

    • @AppleNinja
      @AppleNinja  5 років тому

      myusrn olk There are Apps like Screens or Bomgar that you can use to remote control a Mac from afar. If the user has a router that does port forwarding, then they can forward port 5900 to the IP of the Mac to control. When you use screen sharing to the outside IP of the router it will forward your request to the Mac and allow a screen sharing session. The screen sharing session is not encrypted so it is advised to put that SS session into an SSH Tunnel. I hope this helps.

    Hey thank you for sharing these videos! I currently have an issue I'm trying to resolve. I have two macbook pros, one late 2018 and one 2015. During these times I want to continue my music classes by streaming my music production process with students in a live stream. The issue i'm having is that my new macbook doesn't connect to the internet when I have usbc hub plugged in. I've tried multiple hubs and I don't have 5g which the hub companies suggest to use with wifi problems. What I would like to do is work on my newer macbook without internet connection, and stream that screen to my older mac that doesn't have wifi issues. I would just work from my older mac but it has a ton of cpu problems compared to the newer one. Any ideas to help resolve this would be much appreciated. I would love to continue helping people become better at their passions during these times.

      Let’s get the Internet Connection fixed on the 2018. The screen sharing app will not transfer audio from the remote Mac, so I am thinking it will not work for what you need. Couple questions: Are you using Ethernet or attempting to connect to WiFi?
      When you say you have tried multiple hubs to connect. I am thinking you are plugging in the Ethernet from internet router to the USB-C hub connected to your Mac? Is this correct? If so you might need an Ethernet driver installed for the hub.
      How is the 2015 connected to the internet?

      @@AppleNinja Thanks for replying. I just share netgear wifi from a roomate at the moment. As far as the USBC hubs, I've purchased two brands and they both block the wifi on my 2018 when plugged in. I can only connect when the hub isn't plugged in and I've read threads with others having exact same issue. I only need the hub because a lot of things I need to work are regular usb which the newer macbook doesn't support. My 2015 doesn't need a hub so it's just connects to wifi regularly. Was just asking to see if I could do it without making a store run but you answered my questions. I think I may look into what Ethernet though, its probably my best option so I appreciate you taking the time to help.

      I was reading some tips to try, pasted below. I have never seen the drops or it not working completely and I use several usb c hubs and I use 2.4Ghz WiFi as well. Which models do you have or have you tried?
      Steps to try:
      Use high-quality cables. Cheap cables may lack the shielding required to prevent radio interference from leaking.
      Use high-quality USB 3/USB-C devices. Cheaper devices can cause more problems.
      If you are not using a USB 3 device, unplug it and turn it off.
      If your device has a long cable, move it further away from your computer.
      Try connecting the device to a different port (which may be further away from the Wi-Fi/Bluetooth antenna in your computer, and improve the connection).
      Shift your Wi-Fi installation to the 5GHz frequency instead of 2.4GHz (not all routers and device support this). This has no effect on Bluetooth, which always uses 2.4GHz.
      Reduce other 2.4GHz interference by moving away from devices such as microwave ovens, cordless phones, and baby monitors.
      If possible, move your router (or yourself) to a better spot to get a better signal.
      Let us know if any of these tips help.

      Unfortunately you cannot hear the audio from the other computer, which is a bummer.

      That's a great question. I assume he knew Maclady's password. Many people, understandably, won't want to give out their password.
