A couple of additional details: 1. All those hostilities were going without any declaration of war between Japan and USSR. That had some impact on the minds of Soviet leaders and explains a lot in today's events. 2. Up to the end of the hostilities Britain and France preferred to use the information from only the Japanese side. And, of course, in this information Japanese were decisively winning the battle. Until the end came. This was (and is) the inherent Anglo-Saxon anti-russian bias: in any controversial event accept only information of enemies of Russia. This, too, had its own consequences. When there was the issue of fruitless tripartite talks on stopping Hitler in Moscow, various British war committees convinced each other with fervor that russian army is weak - even much weaker than the Polish army - and there was no sense in meaningful talks with Russians. Such attitude reigned then and it reigns now.

There is one more thing. Much is said and written about the guarantees which were made by Britain and France to Poland. In fact, they weren't guarantees, they were bullshit. The true guarantees were when Soviet foreign minister Molotov said in public in the Soviet parliament that "The border of Mongolian People's Republic we will defend as our own one". Period. And immediately in Mongolia Soviet leadership sent 57th Special Corps with this purpose. If Britain (instead of vague promises) clearly sent maybe one-two its regiments in Poland and Chamberlain/Halifax said similar words in the British Parliament, maybe Hitler wouldn't dare to attack Poland.

If during Operation Barbarossa the USSR had been engaged in the East by Japan, it would have lost.

On Khalkin Gol's Wikipedia page Soviet officials are quoted saying as much. If the IJA and Combined Fleet effort had merely served as a serious distraction to STAVKA, which they could not ignore... I believe the world would look far different today.
