📖📖Background of Liszt’s “Etudes d'exécution transcendante”, S.139 📖📖
Franz Liszt has written three versions of the Transcendental Etudes. His initial version, "Etudes en douze exercises, S.136," was completed in 1826, when Liszt was just 15 years old. The most renowned and frequently performed version is the final revision, "Etudes d'exécution transcendante, S.139," which was released in 1852 as a refinement of an earlier set from 1837. Liszt dedicated this work to his mentor, Carl Czerny.

Within these compositions, Liszt titles upon ten of the twelve etudes, encompassing Italian, French, and German designations. For instance, the etude "Feux Follets" portrays a spectral phenomenon known as a will-o'-the-wisp.
