This is the best art advice I've seen on UA-cam. I was impressed by the way you presented these stories. Unfortunately, we are grown up on a lot of videos with beautiful marshmallow sketchbooks, perfectionist "masterpieces", a reverent attitude to every small detail. And as a result, you forget that growth in creativity is impossible without "dirty" work, that in this process most of all you need ease and freedom. Thank you very much for this video!
i completely agree; i hate seeing “sketchbook tours” of any kind, because it then teaches people that sketchbooks aren’t a private space and are supposed to be filled with perfect works of art, rather than just *sketches*... it’s the same with my art teachers at art school; i’m constantly arguing with them about how stupid it is that i’m supposed to make my sketchbook aesthetically pleasing basically, to anyone that sees this comment: don’t be at all afraid of making a shit piece of work. get yourself a personal sketchbook that you never share with anyone, and draw or doodle or make notes in it however you like, because at the end of the day the only person that your work should matter to is *you*
@@arthurb8436 I couldn’t agree more, my sketchbooks in school were reflections of myself and my emotions. To this point, my teachers assigned us 25 sketchbook pages per school quarter (2 quarters per semester). It was the notion of training one’s mind, eye and hand to react, document and feel their life consistently that forged good work ethic.

Tú recuerdo me hizo recordar todas las veces en que me saboteado al no intentar un dibujo en un block profesional por miedo al error. Por consecuencia, me hizo reflexionar en las veces que no he intentado algo en mi vida, o que dejo a medias por miedo al fracaso: tareas, cursos, empleos etc. Este tipo de ejercicios que te impartió el maestro, más que una prueba de dibujo fue como una manera de conocerlos como personas y su reacción ante la vida. Que bueno que rompiste el dibujo aquel. Me conmovió mucho. Saludos.

That's what you can tell people when they are starting out, or if they're not very talented but don't want to become discouraged even so. But it's not true.
Sometimes it can be like that, but the paintings you make are still part of a learning process, I think keeping them or being proud of them is not a bad thing if you still know how to evolve, take risks and do new things
@@anapaulamenagarcia7523 I agree... But it's more complicated than that. Let's say you just made a masterpiece. And you hang it proudly on your wall. And you have to look at it every single day. And every single time you feel like a God. But... In the end of the day it's so overwhelming to know that you will never surpass that level of greatness. That way it's sooo easy to give up or block your creativity and imagination.
When I was a kid, my dad would remove my pencil eraser and each time I made a mistake he would have me ball up the paper and toss it. He was teaching me a valuable lesson that at the time I did not appreciate.
You NEVER fail. U learn from doing. You learn from making 'MISTAKES'. You don't try to make mistakes but we do. Learn from them. Don't repeat them. Set yourself up for success. Keep trying. Never give up. If you get feedback from people, is it feedback u can use? YES? Great listen to them. Is it positive, useful, thought provoking? If yes then use what u feel, from their feedback is useful. If it's abusive, a personal attack, negative, then u don't need that person or that thinking in your positive life! Go forward. By doing, like crawling, trying to stand, but falling, again & again get up & try again & again. If a direction, you have been taking isn't working then change direction, change something in you way of approach, thinking, tools etc. Grow. You did it as a baby... learning to walk...falling & getting back up again...well u can do it as an adult & learn to live & grow. Here endeth the lesson.
Ese es mi mayor temor fracasar, aun a mi mismo. Con la pandemia, lo unico que me queda de pinturas del 2015 son como dos colores y ninguna brocha, me cuesta hacer errores por la falta de materiales.
esto me hace sentir mucho mejor, había hecho una pintura de una chica que me quedó espectacular...quería hacer otra al lado de ella en la misma página pero esta no me quedó tan bien como esperaba y terminé "arruinando" lo que había hecho, pero viendo tantos buenos comentarios me ha animado a romper mi dibujo y hacerlo denuevo y mejor. está bien fallar, no? :")
This is an important lesson. We value our work so much it often holds us back. Who's never finished a pencil drawing and was so happy with it that they feared ruining it by finishing it with ink? When we learn to detach ourselves is when we truly start learning because we can feel comfortable doing new things.
That was the most influencing video for me. I mean, I've watched a lot of videos by you, Cesar. But this set my hands free. It reminds me of how did I get the skill of playing the guitar. First, you're always afraid of breaking strings, maybe, having a wider stroke when you are taking new chords. You're scared of hitting your fingers to blood. Scared of the result that may be painful, costs a lot to you. But the moment you realize that the wounds heal ( the guitar wounds, it more compares with scratches or bruises which are not serious) and the strings are not expensive to buy in most cases - you're starting to put all your inner self into what you do. You're not afraid of making strings dirty. You're not afraid of getting this temporary pain. You just do it and enjoy it all. That's the way I learn to paint now. And I'm adoring you for this, maybe, obvious advice. I've not seen that before you said it. Thank you really much.

Gran consejo. Tube un maestro que luego de muchas horas se trabajarle a una escultura , que sentía como la mejor obra se arte, nos hacia lanzarla con fuerza al piso. Y decía este fue sólo un ensayo y la siguiente saldra mejor de manera que no se perdió ni el tiempo por que hubo aprendizaje ni la arcilla por que ahí esta. Así que a volver a comenzar.
Thank you for this. It reminded me of something I read in "The War of Art" by Steven Pressfield. The amateur gets attached to his art while the professional works with absolute detachment from the results. I also fall to this amateurity many times. The need for perfection. It was also the reason I quit drawing for many of my younger years and I truly regret it. I will try my best to embed this mindset in the future. Art is not about the approval or others or of yourself. Instead, it should be about freedom, experimentation and peace of mind. It should be an escape for the soul, not another source of stress and guilt. We have already have plenty of that in our lives. I believe that anyone who has freed himself in his Art has already made it. Again, Thank you.
Ok, I tried this and I'm never going back to drawing without this technique. It added so much depth to my drawing that it became like painting in the end. It also taught me to relax and free myself up from perfection because I was "messing it up" anyway. The portrait I did last night had depth that I'd never seen in my work before. (I didn't tear it up though. LOL) Maybe next time. Thank you so much.

Sometimes I'm jealous with art students because they get a really good lesson one to one with the art teacher. And there's me need to find thoose things in Internet..
I understand what lesson tearing up old drawings supposed to teach, but I also think it's valuable to keep them, so in the future you can look back at them and realize how much you have grown. Recently, I felt like my art wasn't improving at all, but I looked at something I'd painted just a year before and thought to myself "holy shit, this is so bad." This proved to me that I was improving and gave me motivation.
it’s about letting go of attachment. when you create a work you’re happy with, there’s always more to improve. so you have to let go of the idea that its some masterpiece worth keeping.... it shows you know you can reproduce the same image again, that you can make it better, and that you aren’t afraid of failing or letting it go
Just scan it and let it go. I do that now because we live in age of technology, and also I would be moving from place to place I can't drag every single piece.
The first teacher was also testing the level of humility and willingness to learn by tearing a drawing the student viewed as perfect. The student should have seen that by erasing and going back over the drawing that his or her skills had already been challenged and improved. It no doubt hurt to tear it, but the act of doing so let the instructor know that this student was now ready to "let go" and really learn.

Me gusto tanto lo que conto! Lo hice rapidamente en un dibujo que sentia que no podia seguir, un paisaje, lo cubri con pintura transparente ...violeta y lo que paso me llenaron los ojos de lagrimas...eso es lo que transformo mi trabajo en una fantasia, en un lindisimo minuto de amor a la pintura. Yo empecé en clases de pintura cuando mi padre fue diagnosticado de Alzheimer. Me recomendaron una actividad que me distrajera, y me decidí por la pintura. En mi primera clase, elegí una cala para dibujar a lápiz, porque pensé que era lo más sencillo; aún así a mí, no me salía. Le dije a la profesora que lo dejaba, porque era algo frustrante. Ella me dijo: " Si te piensas que te van a salir los dibujos a la primera, estás muy equivocada" , así que volví y cuándo mi cala se parecía a la original, me sentí orgullosa. Seguí con carboncillo, luego pasteles y acabé haciendo pinturas al óleo. Tienes toda la razón, no importa las veces que te equivoques, la pintura no es un programa en directo en el que todo tiene que salir bien a la primera, de los errores tb. se aprende. Un saludo y enhorabuena por tu canal.
Te recomiendo evitar el uso de trementina.Según la Real Academia de Arte, produce pérdida de la memoria y la concentración,y psicosis.(Introducción al Óleo)

i had a painting teacher that told me to put an orange glaze on a painting...i liked how it came out.. it is really hard to get students to change, re-do, rework their art. they tend to really resist...often saying "i like it the way it is". that is the worst mentality to have if you want to get better...it is very rewarding to make something that is good even better. you have to want to get better and accept that everyone can do better...but i agree with other posts..its about the process and the enjoyment. it can be frustrating trying to get things right but maybe its more about learning process and technique than being a camera. thats why they have those things.

Me gusto mucho tu video. Me gusta el arte. De niño dibujaba mucho y pasaba horas entretenido. Ya de adulto me interese por la escultura pero de figuras en miniatura. No sabía nada del tema y en esa época no había Internet. Han pasado desde ese inicio 20 años y recien hoy después de todo ese tiempo pude alcanzar una calidad digamos "buena" en mis trabajos. La verdad es que en todos estos años aprendí a hacer y deshacer una y otra vez. Empezar de nuevo. Corregir técnicas, mejorar mi ojo y mi interpretación de las formas. Y lo valioso ha sido solo el disfrute que sentí en cada momento dedicado a este intento. Gracias por tu mensaje!

I've watched this three times now. Absolutely mind blowing at how they are conveying what an artist is. This is the mindset we need to simply LEARN how to make beautiful things. A dedication to do it well, the determination to repeat it a million times, willingness to follow the instruction of others no matter how harsh, all to perfect what an artist will love for themselves. This might also explain why real art is not cheap. Any artist reading this, never undersell yourself. Your training and diligence is worth gold, and that flows to your pieces as well.

Gran consejo. Tube un maestro que luego de muchas horas se trabajarle a una escultura , que sentía como la mejor obra se arte, nos hacia lanzarla con fuerza al piso. Y decía este fue sólo un ensayo y la siguiente saldra mejor de manera que no se perdió ni el tiempo por que hubo aprendizaje ni la arcilla por que ahí esta. Así que a volver a comenzar.

It reminded me of something I read in "The War of Art" by Steven Pressfield. The amateur gets attached to his art while the professional works with absolute detachment from the results.
I also fall to this amateurity many times. The need for perfection. It was also the reason I quit drawing for many of my younger years and I truly regret it. I will try my best to embed this mindset in the future. Art is not about the approval or others or of yourself. Instead, it should be about freedom, experimentation and peace of mind. It should be an escape for the soul, not another source of stress and guilt. We have already have plenty of that in our lives.
I believe that anyone who has freed himself in his Art has already made it. Again, Thank you.
Ok, I tried this and I'm never going back to drawing without this technique. It added so much depth to my drawing that it became like painting in the end. It also taught me to relax and free myself up from perfection because I was "messing it up" anyway. The portrait I did last night had depth that I'd never seen in my work before. (I didn't tear it up though. LOL) Maybe next time. Thank you so much.

I understand what lesson tearing up old drawings supposed to teach, but I also think it's valuable to keep them, so in the future you can look back at them and realize how much you have grown. Recently, I felt like my art wasn't improving at all, but I looked at something I'd painted just a year before and thought to myself "holy shit, this is so bad." This proved to me that I was improving and gave me motivation.
it’s about letting go of attachment. when you create a work you’re happy with, there’s always more to improve. so you have to let go of the idea that its some masterpiece worth keeping.... it shows you know you can reproduce the same image again, that you can make it better, and that you aren’t afraid of failing or letting it go
Just scan it and let it go. I do that now because we live in age of technology, and also I would be moving from place to place I can't drag every single piece.
the idea is freeing for me which is what the lesson is supposed to be I believe, fear is the mind killer
The first teacher was also testing the level of humility and willingness to learn by tearing a drawing the student viewed as perfect. The student should have seen that by erasing and going back over the drawing that his or her skills had already been challenged and improved. It no doubt hurt to tear it, but the act of doing so let the instructor know that this student was now ready to "let go" and really learn.

Me gusto tanto lo que conto! Lo hice rapidamente en un dibujo que sentia que no podia seguir, un paisaje, lo cubri con pintura transparente ...violeta y lo que paso me llenaron los ojos de lagrimas...eso es lo que transformo mi trabajo en una fantasia, en un lindisimo minuto de amor a la pintura. Yo empecé en clases de pintura cuando mi padre fue diagnosticado de Alzheimer. Me recomendaron una actividad que me distrajera, y me decidí por la pintura. En mi primera clase, elegí una cala para dibujar a lápiz, porque pensé que era lo más sencillo; aún así a mí, no me salía. Le dije a la profesora que lo dejaba, porque era algo frustrante. Ella me dijo: " Si te piensas que te van a salir los dibujos a la primera, estás muy equivocada" , así que volví y cuándo mi cala se parecía a la original, me sentí orgullosa. Seguí con carboncillo, luego pasteles y acabé haciendo pinturas al óleo. Tienes toda la razón, no importa las veces que te equivoques, la pintura no es un programa en directo en el que todo tiene que salir bien a la primera, de los errores tb. se aprende. Un saludo y enhorabuena por tu canal.
Te recomiendo evitar el uso de trementina.Según la Real Academia de Arte, produce pérdida de la memoria y la concentración,y psicosis.(Introducción al Óleo)

i had a painting teacher that told me to put an orange glaze on a painting...i liked how it came out..
it is really hard to get students to change, re-do, rework their art. they tend to really resist...often saying "i like it the way it is". that is the worst mentality to have if you want to get better...it is very rewarding to make something that is good even better. you have to want to get better and accept that everyone can do better...but i agree with other posts..its about the process and the enjoyment. it can be frustrating trying to get things right but maybe its more about learning process and technique than being a camera. thats why they have those things.

Me gusto mucho tu video. Me gusta el arte. De niño dibujaba mucho y pasaba horas entretenido. Ya de adulto me interese por la escultura pero de figuras en miniatura. No sabía nada del tema y en esa época no había Internet. Han pasado desde ese inicio 20 años y recien hoy después de todo ese tiempo pude alcanzar una calidad digamos "buena" en mis trabajos. La verdad es que en todos estos años aprendí a hacer y deshacer una y otra vez. Empezar de nuevo. Corregir técnicas, mejorar mi ojo y mi interpretación de las formas. Y lo valioso ha sido solo el disfrute que sentí en cada momento dedicado a este intento. Gracias por tu mensaje!

Creo que una enseñanza importante es el tener humildad de saber que no eres la gran cosa y tus dibujos no son la séptima maravilla, solo somos personas comúnes expresandonos a través de un papel
I've watched this three times now. Absolutely mind blowing at how they are conveying what an artist is. This is the mindset we need to simply LEARN how to make beautiful things. A dedication to do it well, the determination to repeat it a million times, willingness to follow the instruction of others no matter how harsh, all to perfect what an artist will love for themselves.
This might also explain why real art is not cheap. Any artist reading this, never undersell yourself. Your training and diligence is worth gold, and that flows to your pieces as well.

I finally found the answers I needed, and they did not come from the best psychologist or Phd professor, they had to come from an artist: I limited myself from what I fear to lose and never understood to look at what I will gain, that I could remake what I lost, I did it before and it will be better next time.
