I'm studying art rn and the instructors all want me to sketch before starting a piece. I work so much better and Have more successful work when I go straight in with no sketch and work in my head.
Well, that is the point of art school. I wouldnt have the patience, because I also dont have the skill to use rulers or enjoy copying things. But if I spend money on Art school then Id have to Trust the instructor. Learn the Rules, Master it, then you break them.
@@eduardochavacano it is lol i just struggle sketching for a 3d object in my 3d class its easier for me to just dive in. I'm at community College rn so luckily I'm not spending a ton of money for school and I know all of the instructors in the art department🤣🤣 I personally feel like I learn more outside of the classroom but that could just be me 😅😅
this totally annoyed me when I was a kid.. all the good-for-nothing adults and peers first question: "What are you drawing?"... when I merely even started! How the heck should I know?

That reminds me of a moto I saw printed on a class door a few years ago that franckly resumed my way of trying to learn "Aim for the moon, if you fail, you'll still reach the stars."
@@nkubkbkuj I think it was in a sense of if you miss what you were aiming for, you'll still reach something that is better than nothing. Plus scientically speaking, if you've gained enough speed to reach the moon, you have enough speed to reach anything as long as you don't meet any obstacles. Speed doesn't decrease in space like it does on Earth because of the friction forces with the air.
Despite how ‘loose’ it is, I’m totally engaged in this painting. I can feel the concentration of the chefs, the clutter of a busy kitchen, the heat of the bain marie and the freshness of the ingredients... it’s fascinating; such an arbitrary subject but absorbing nonetheless.
Yea I agree, it feels fast and chaotic (in a good way), though I would have maybe preferred a little bit more detail because I found myself looking at the objects on the counters and not knowing what they were supposed to be. I think that's on me tho for being used to well defined/rigid backgrounds, its very interesting to look at though.
This is not just a painting technique, it is a philosophy of life. I am rigorous and a methodist to do everything and in the end I become my worst enemy, people like me need to trust themselves more and get out of that comfort zone to create great things like this painting
Excellent lesson about life. I notice that people in my life seem to phone it home on many things they do. Like even doing the dishes. I like to think that everything I do should have my best deal of approval, even doing the dishes and how well they are stacked in the drying rack.

Noobs, oil painting medium is suppressing the previous color as he he is picking the other color and he is wiping his brush in a paper towel when he is done with one color,then he moves the other color. + I liked your comment ;)
@@anaygupta4406 Yes, yes I know all that and most likely he cleans his brush each time - so you are right. But still you could apply some paint on the tip of the brush and leave on canvas and apply another colour without cleaning. Obviously only to some limited degree and yes the new colour would get mixed every time a little bit with previus one. So much can be done with oils...obviously one knows what is doing ;-)
Very observant- that’s a great question! It’s a technique to create colour harmony. If you look closely, he doesn’t use a completely differently colour. Instead, he is constantly adjusting the current colour with a new colour. For example, he put a patch of pure blue on the canvas, then mixed a tiny touch of green in it to cool it down, and put that on the canvas. Then he added a bit of orange to make it more grey, etc. So each colour that goes down on the canvas is a mixture of the previous colour. Many artists deliberately paint with a ‘dirty’ brush, because paint straight from the tube looks artificial - most of the colours we see around us are altered by the the light and other objects reflecting on them.
1:56 "No matter how hard I try to let go, the line holds me" i can relate to this one so much cause if i sketch too much i tend to worry too much on my brush strokes to keep it as precise or 'clean' as possible, which prevents me to be more creative and give it more personality

I'm not a full time artist but I do paint once in a while and that brought me to your video. I'm really grateful for it. Firstly because this exercise is actually really good and I can't wait to try it myself. And secondly the idea that you talked about applies to anything and everything really and it does make sense that we stop thinking about our work and that's when we start to fail and our work doesn't seem so interesting and fun anymore. I'll try be more like beginner minded person so that I can enjoy what I do. Really appreciate your video.

Great painting. I've been thinking about this a lot recently. I'll share some of my thoughts in case anyone reads this and might find it interesting. When painting without outlines drawn first, you want to paint big shapes of color first so that you can easily get all the main proportions accurate. Then the smaller shapes and details can be painted on top and inside the bigger shapes. For example, if you're painting that chef you would probably want to mix up a light tonal value and just paint in one big flat shape for the jacket, torso, shoulders, etc. Then when that's accurate, you can paint in all the smaller details and shapes of color inside that one big shape. Another extremely important thing to remember is that you can paint a shape very simplified at first, and then change it to add in the details and intricacies of that shape and contour. Back to the example of painting the torso of the chef, when you paint in the one big flat shape all the curves and contours along the edge of that shape can be simplified at first, and then added to and changed later on to make it more accurate and complete. The same case with the smaller shapes inside the bigger shape, they can be simplified at first and then made more complex later. The main way to simplify the contour edge of a shape is by making it a straight line of an accurate angle or a simplified curve. Paying close attention to the angles of these simplified straight lines, and then add in all the little details and small curves and angles to it later. These two things, painting at first with really big shapes to get the main proportions and then painting the smaller shapes inside them, and also simplifying all the contours of the shapes into straight lines and simple curves and making them more complex later, have really helped me a lot.

I have been painting for years and I lost passion for it because I felt like my painting style was too rigid. And I wanted it to be a form of letting go and just flow but I could never figure out how to do that. This is an absolutely great inspiration on how to maybe start doing that. There is something so beautiful about an art piece that doesn't have rigid and sharp details. It looks so effortless and uninhibited. I love how this painting turned out... That was especially useful and inspiring because I've felt depressed for 4 years by my relationships with painting and drawing -- always complaining about "why I can't draw anything that I want to draw". Now I'm starting to understand everything about it.

Es un buen punto para artistas tradicionales y digitales. Yo hago mis dibujos digitalmente, y siempre hago un sketch. Pero pronto me dí cuenta que ese sketch siempre me estaba limitando, de una manera u otra. Sigo haciendo sketches, pero ahora me doy más oportunidad de hacerlo sin el boceto, y me parece que la calidad ha mejorado considerablemente. Ya tengo idea de cómo hacer la piel sin que se vea plana/sin vida :D

I love your painting. I think the biggest challenge for a lot of people is worrying that they will ruin their work if they loosen up. I think to produce a really living piece of work you have to be willing to risk ruining it, and you have to enjoy making a mess.
I never sketched before painting and saw all the artist doing it and started recently... this is so relieving.... but could you tell me what do I do to prevent from painting layers and layers... like I want to stop at some point but I keep correcting and adding
Yeah, that's something that a lot of artists struggle with-constantly touching their work until it is overworked. A good thing to remember is that a work may never seemed finished and also perfection isn't needed. Something that might help is documenting your process. What I mean by this is once you reach a point of concept visualized, take a professional picture (think a picture that could be used as a print). Do this with each touch up session and once you finally stop fiddling with it, look over all the pictures. Doing this with multiple pieces might be able to visually show you where in the process you should stop to feel satisfied with your work. Also, doing this could be a way of making you step back and take a short break, get your eyes focused on something else and the big picture. Another thing this is good for is helping you feel more confident in covering something up or adding something your not too sure about, if you struggle with that.
So how do you know that the painting will be proportional and come together or does that just come with practice?Also do you do abstract or realistic paintings?

Exelente explicación. El concepto de fondo es contundentemente aclarador. Tuve, entre mis propias y escasas habilidades natas, la de tener facilidad para dibujar, nunca exploté esa habilidad de alguna manera seria, la consideré un rasgo característico sin mayor importancia. Hoy, quizá por encontrar detalles que hagan mi existencia un poco menos monótona, me ha dado por pintar. Y aqui es donde entra el valor que saco de este video, el tema de, lo valioso de comprender ese lapso de tiempo requerido para adquirir la experiencia necesaria sin caer en la frustración. He deshecho y re comenzado mi pintura incontables veces durante dos años. Ante mi incapacidad aun de lograr un dominio considerablemente aceptable en lo referente al realismo, he decidido enfocarme en lograr un impacto mas en lo dramático de la impresión a la vista acerca del mensaje que enfocarme en la perfección tecnica en la ejecución de la pintura. Para empezar, sabía que debía programar mi mente para resistir los embates de la frustración, asi que opté por la broma, cuando me preguntaban una y otra vez; "que pasó con los barcos??.." Estoy pintando sobre la travesía de los galeones españoles hacia el nuevo mundo, asi que de eso se trata. Entonces se me ocurrian respuestas variadas como; es que no me daba cuenta y habia estado pintando sobre el triangulo de las bermudas y me estaba desapareciendo los barcos!🤣 O, es que me está quedando tan realista que los barcos se avanzan y salen de cuadro!... Pero finalmente concluí que, ese cuadro sería una especie de ejercicio de prueba y error y que duraría el tiempo que tuviese que durar. Lo que expones en este video me da la razón de tomarme las cosas a su propio paso y no al mio, es decir; no frustrarme, no apresurarme, todo acomoda en su debido ritmo. Gracias!

One reason is , any artist should be able to do that, cause its not the brush that paints, its the individual.

Creo que, uno de nuestros mayores miedos como humanos en general es la equivocación. Pero en realidad es un miedo paralizante por el que debemos atravesar con coraje.
Una vez leí la frase: Es mucho más vergonzoso no crear esa esa pintura, que crearla aunque te equivoques mucho al hacerla.

I'm not a full time artist but I do paint once in a while and that brought me to your video. I'm really grateful for it. Firstly because this exercise is actually really good and I can't wait to try it myself. And secondly the idea that you talked about applies to anything and everything really and it does make sense that we stop thinking about our work and that's when we start to fail and our work doesn't seem so interesting and fun anymore. I'll try be more like beginner minded person so that I can enjoy what I do. Really appreciate your video.

Great painting. I've been thinking about this a lot recently. I'll share some of my thoughts in case anyone reads this and might find it interesting.
When painting without outlines drawn first, you want to paint big shapes of color first so that you can easily get all the main proportions accurate. Then the smaller shapes and details can be painted on top and inside the bigger shapes.
For example, if you're painting that chef you would probably want to mix up a light tonal value and just paint in one big flat shape for the jacket, torso, shoulders, etc. Then when that's accurate, you can paint in all the smaller details and shapes of color inside that one big shape.
Another extremely important thing to remember is that you can paint a shape very simplified at first, and then change it to add in the details and intricacies of that shape and contour. Back to the example of painting the torso of the chef, when you paint in the one big flat shape all the curves and contours along the edge of that shape can be simplified at first, and then added to and changed later on to make it more accurate and complete.
The same case with the smaller shapes inside the bigger shape, they can be simplified at first and then made more complex later.
The main way to simplify the contour edge of a shape is by making it a straight line of an accurate angle or a simplified curve.
Paying close attention to the angles of these simplified straight lines, and then add in all the little details and small curves and angles to it later.
These two things, painting at first with really big shapes to get the main proportions and then painting the smaller shapes inside them, and also simplifying all the contours of the shapes into straight lines and simple curves and making them more complex later, have really helped me a lot.
I'm just abstract, colorful and geometric or charcoa painting, but I watched it with pleasure. Thanks my dear 🙂

I have been painting for years and I lost passion for it because I felt like my painting style was too rigid. And I wanted it to be a form of letting go and just flow but I could never figure out how to do that. This is an absolutely great inspiration on how to maybe start doing that. There is something so beautiful about an art piece that doesn't have rigid and sharp details. It looks so effortless and uninhibited. I love how this painting turned out... Me encanta como Cesar decidió no corregir su cuadro es una buena muestra de humildad, sobre todo en el mundo que se maneja y los tiempos que corren. Pienso que es una buena lección y que se debería impartir a todos los artistas. No solo se trata de ser mejores personas, la humildad te hace ser un mejor artista por el simple hecho de tener la capacidad de ver tus propios errores y asumirlos y aprender de ellos. Es un buen punto para artistas tradicionales y digitales. Yo hago mis dibujos digitalmente, y siempre hago un sketch. Pero pronto me dí cuenta que ese sketch siempre me estaba limitando, de una manera u otra. Sigo haciendo sketches, pero ahora me doy más oportunidad de hacerlo sin el boceto, y me parece que la calidad ha mejorado considerablemente. Ya tengo idea de cómo hacer la piel sin que se vea plana/sin vida :D

Me encanta tal y como quedó, la imagen que elegiste, la forma de pincelar, los colores, las luces y sombras, creo que es una muy buena creación la verdad, me encanta también lo que hablas en el video, tanto lo que dices y como lo dices.. me parece genial el video en su totalidad.. En mi caso, me gusta la pintura pero se me da mejor lo abstracto, algún día me animaré a pintar a mano alzada como en el video, porque por lo general, hago un dibujo previo para visualizar más menos la idea de lo que quiero.. y sabes, me parece bien q hayas dejado los errores (aunq supongo q solo tu los ves).. aprendí pintando que, finalmente lo imperfecto también es perfecto.. asi como en la vida misma 💛

I love your painting. I think the biggest challenge for a lot of people is worrying that they will ruin their work if they loosen up. I think to produce a really living piece of work you have to be willing to risk ruining it, and you have to enjoy making a mess.

I never sketched before painting and saw all the artist doing it and started recently... this is so relieving.... but could you tell me what do I do to prevent from painting layers and layers... like I want to stop at some point but I keep correcting and adding
Maybe when you think of correcting something, look away from your painting for a bit and then come back to it, it works for me ☺️
Try remembering how you visualised the painting in your mind at the beginning and see if it matches that.
Yeah, that's something that a lot of artists struggle with-constantly touching their work until it is overworked. A good thing to remember is that a work may never seemed finished and also perfection isn't needed. Something that might help is documenting your process. What I mean by this is once you reach a point of concept visualized, take a professional picture (think a picture that could be used as a print). Do this with each touch up session and once you finally stop fiddling with it, look over all the pictures. Doing this with multiple pieces might be able to visually show you where in the process you should stop to feel satisfied with your work. Also, doing this could be a way of making you step back and take a short break, get your eyes focused on something else and the big picture. Another thing this is good for is helping you feel more confident in covering something up or adding something your not too sure about, if you struggle with that.

@@hide8653 as from what i know, even if you wrong, you still can use other colours to change it to the right one. So, i think they wouldn't be scared to draw anything without sketching

El concepto de fondo es contundentemente aclarador.
Tuve, entre mis propias y escasas habilidades natas, la de tener facilidad para dibujar, nunca exploté esa habilidad de alguna manera seria, la consideré un rasgo característico sin mayor importancia.
Hoy, quizá por encontrar detalles que hagan mi existencia un poco menos monótona, me ha dado por pintar. Y aqui es donde entra el valor que saco de este video, el tema de, lo valioso de comprender ese lapso de tiempo requerido para adquirir la experiencia necesaria sin caer en la frustración.
He deshecho y re comenzado mi pintura incontables veces durante dos años. Ante mi incapacidad aun de lograr un dominio considerablemente aceptable en lo referente al realismo, he decidido enfocarme en lograr un impacto mas en lo dramático de la impresión a la vista acerca del mensaje que enfocarme en la perfección tecnica en la ejecución de la pintura.
Para empezar, sabía que debía programar mi mente para resistir los embates de la frustración, asi que opté por la broma, cuando me preguntaban una y otra vez; "que pasó con los barcos??.."
Estoy pintando sobre la travesía de los galeones españoles hacia el nuevo mundo, asi que de eso se trata.
Entonces se me ocurrian respuestas variadas como; es que no me daba cuenta y habia estado pintando sobre el triangulo de las bermudas y me estaba desapareciendo los barcos!🤣 O, es que me está quedando tan realista que los barcos se avanzan y salen de cuadro!...
Pero finalmente concluí que, ese cuadro sería una especie de ejercicio de prueba y error y que duraría el tiempo que tuviese que durar.
Lo que expones en este video me da la razón de tomarme las cosas a su propio paso y no al mio, es decir; no frustrarme, no apresurarme, todo acomoda en su debido ritmo.

Amo dibujar directamente al lienzo es algo que he venido practicando, lo disfruto muchísimo y aunque las medidas no queden proporcionalmente bien lo encuentro mágico aunque por supuesto siempre y cuando esas proporciones no sean tan evidentes. Muchas gracias 🙏🏼

According what you said about being focused on what you do... whis is why I love writing. You can't just paste another words and go on. Every single word must be chosen by you with care ♡ but your channel is so meaningful for me! I'm painting almost whole life, but it was for fun, like hobby. I liked that I can do something creative and someone can say "That's pretty! ". But now, I try to find way to more awareness in painting - I really wanna study conservation of art.
