Fun fact: When they were restoring Dominion of Canada, they found traces of its original paint from when it was freshly built, and even the fireman's newspaper under the seat in the cab.

I can only wonder what ever happened to the newspaper. If old, it could've been thrown away.
And at the same time they found a news paper and some paint they were busy selling off parts of the collection, planning a needless rebranding excersise and allowing many items needing work to simply rust.
I like an A4, but this was pure irrespibble waste

The Great Gathering was such a clever idea. I don’t know if they’ll do it again for Mallard’s 100th anniversary but it sure would be incredible if they did.
Most likely they would senses 100 anniversaries are more special.

I grew up going to the railroad museum in Wisconsin. When this was going on, I remember some residents being concerned about the UK just keeping the locomotive and never returning it. I know it sounds weird but when you consider the cost of shipping a locomotive overseas it starts to become somewhat believable.
well not just the costs but also the risks, seeing how one bad storm would leave the engine on the bottom of the alantic
I mean the flying Scotsman almost never went back to the UK for the reason if it being too expensive
If anything DDE could have stayed in the UK longer, as she could have got a more in-depth restoration.
As a boy scout from the area, the museum in green bay hosted one of our events during one summer. getting to climb arround the trains and see them inside and out is one of my favorite memories.
I mean after seeing the state that Dwight and Dominion of Canada were in could you blame us for not being keen to return our property?
Saw them at York for the Great Gathering and again later at Shildon for the Great Goodbye , York was a blistering day and between the temperature and the huge number of people in there the Great Hall became the Great Greenhouse. Still had a cracking day.
The staff at York and Shildon had a lot on their hands, Shildon in particular, I’m local to the area and those little roads where jammed with cars like it was a music festival.
Shildon is quite tiny.
Though the area is qutie significent with it being basically at the original Stockton & darlington railway that eventually became the Tees Valley line and laid the groundwork for the Stockton & hartlepool railway that eventually became the durham coast line.
Entire Area has been through alot and from what i have seen looking through a bit of history the end of steam pretty much started the decline of the entire area.

I was lucky enough to see the great gathering, it was one of the greatest things I’ve ever seen

I was fortunate to be able to attend The Gathering at York, and walking between these great machines was an experience I will never forget. They are huge, beautiful creations that just exude power even when at rest.
What makes the A4 reunion so nice is not so much the engines themselves, but more the fact that it's so rare to have so many examples of a class preserved. Especially from the LNER, no less.
I was at the Great Gathering with a friend. I had been really lucky a year or so earlier. I was down for the CTC Rally at The Knavesmire and had bought a purple Pedersen (by Kemper) and had lots of fun cycling it round York. By sheer and utter chance I cycled past the NRM while Tornado was collecting Mallard to haul her off to Shildon for cosmetic overhaul. I got some nice photos including a few with the bike next to them behind the railings.
On one of my few trips to England I went to York with no intention of going to the National Railway Museum. I ended up staying an extra day and going, and made a point of having a good look at Mallard.

We had a slight locomotive family Reunion in Carson City, Nevada just this weekend.
The Nevada State Railroad Museum brought together 6 of the 9 still existing steam Locomotives of the Virginia and Truckee Railroad, as well as a new build replica of the first locomotive. And in addition hosted a railfair with many visiting locomotives that weren't technically V&T owned but did serve the same area.
There were 35 built, but only 34 survived the war, one being destroyed in an air raid in which York's railway shed was damaged.
I heard that upon sending Dominion of Canada across the pond, they sent the bell in a box along with instructions of how to fit it back to the loco. But when it returned to the UK in 2012, the box was also returned, unopened.
I missed the Great Gathering at York in july 2013, but went to the Autumn Gathering at York in October 2013 (the same day as my ex and her family went, although that was before we knew each other, and they have no pics of me and vice versa), and the Great Goodbye at Shildon in February 2014.
Shame steam locomotives are much too hard work to fix quickly and easily as I would’ve loved to have seen them all in steam
Well; much too hard *now* , while when Steam was the main traction of choice, the economics of it was different.
From what I've seen mentioned online, Dominion of Canada required so many new parts it became a "ship of Theseus" problem. They would've ended up building a brand new A4 just to get it operational again.
@@taal223 Sounds a bit like Flying Scotman, which has had most of her parts replaced over her lifetime, but of course has her place in people's affection partially because of that; because she has seen so much post-retirement running.
I had the privilege of going to the Great Gathering in York. As a train nerd with a fascination for A4's, it made me a very happy chappy. Hopefully they can reunite again

I saw the dwight d isenhouer irl. Its at the national railway museum in greenbay, wisconsin. I visited it on vacation
I like that workers took 1 and hid it In the weeeds behind the building.
It was fantastic seeing all of these locomotives together.

Funny you posted this up, I just went and visited Eisenhower a week or 2 back. She's still in pretty good nick and the boys seem to have done fairly well on her cosmetics.

Another couple fun facts:
Dwight was the first locomotive to receive garter blue after the war, and the only to retain its pre-war number for a short period of time after repainting.
Both DoC and Dwight had offers to keep the locos in the UK, but both museums didn't budge.
When Dwight was repainted sometime at Green Bay, it gained lining on the firebox boiler band, something other A4's never received
Dwight's red nameplate was correct. It had its nameplate painted red for a short period of time in service (don't have my books in front of my for exacts)
DoC had its bell removed due to the double chimney being fitted and thus making it impossible for the cods mouth to open if the bell was moved anymore forward.
DoC was originally named Woodcock, but still had the number 4489. The name was later used on another locomotive, 4493.
DoC (Woodcock) ran for roughly 5 weeks in a lined works gray livery, with apple green wheels.
DoC also ran for a very short time without it iconic whistle and bell (in LNER days). I need to research more on this next part, but the whistle might not have been on 4489 when the bell first was attached, and whistle removed before the double chimney was fitted.
DoC you saw first arriving in the UK is still in the original BR green livery she was sent overseas with, just like how Lode Star is from Swindon (minus leaving the UK part ;) ).
DoC also has a slight variation with her tender. Her tender still has the bottom of her tender sides lowered for the stainless strips to be attached. Go look at her when she was still in BR green, you'll notice the bottom being slightly lower. (Bittern, when she masqueraded as Dominion of New Zealand, had the stainless strips, but was done differently)

I was at the great gathering at Shildon railway museum, once in a lifetime opportunity to witness this event. Such an amazing day in railway history
It is a shame that the A4 Commonwealth of Australia was not preserved.
It was offered to the major Australian railway preservation group through government channels but they were too stretched preserving Australian railway equipment so that the offer could not be taken up.
May have been a similar story for the Dominion of New Zealand named A4.
So the story goes. Less sure about the India named locomotive.
Many years later when talking to a senior British Railways official doing railway consulting work in Australia I raised my theory that each state in Australia should have asked for the Jubilee nameplate corresponding to each state. He said that would be no problem at scrapping time but went on to say that at the time each state could have got the whole Jubilee locomotive named after the state of they had asked
I remember this because we went on holiday so i could go, went the day before it started and saw them polishing a couple of them and then the day of, we'd been on a holiday a few years before and say the Sir Nigel Gresley on the Severn valley railway and it was at that point i discovered a love for the class. This video was really good.

I think you might like the attempt that Burlington Northern did when they tried to build their Bopper Cars.
I didn't get to see the gathering. There was a bit of a queue when I tried visiting the NRM in York at the time and Shildon is further away.
One problem: No Spencer! It's like he's so pompous that his siblings don't want anything to do with him!
I was at some of these events in York. I remember going in July of that year, just after the 75th anniversary, and the place was rammed. Usually you can just walk in, but there was a really long queue; it must have taken me at least 10-15 minutes to get in.
By the way, it's good to see an Englishman and an American collaborate on the same video, bonded by one common interest: trains!
I remember browsing the stunning photos of this event in The Railway Magazine. Didn't quite read about the paint mixup on Dwight though.

I remember going to the Great Gathering at York... I went on the cabs of both Eisenhower and Dominion of Canada (as they were the visitors from across the pond)... I also waited in the mammoth queue for the star of the show, Mallard... (if I'm not mistaken it might have been the first time people were being allowed into the icon's footplate, a tradition they still do it to this day)
I'm going to a reunion tomorrow and this video is awesome too and for that you get 👍🏾

Whenever I go yo the Canadian railway museum in St-Constant (Québec), I see the Dominion of Canada.
I wish museums for such functional works of art had the money and staff to keep all of their treasures in the proper state: Always ready to build a head of steam and get to work. It just feels wrong to me to let such machines decay and whither... They should be kept in the prime of their life, ready to do their duty. It feels like any loco that isn't ready to fire and steam isn't really a loco, just a collection of parts that looks like one. Am I the only one who feels like that?
Within regards to Mallard, the reason why it hasn't been restored to steam is because it is the NRM's most valuable asset; people flock to the museum to see Mallard and if it was in commission and still running, there would be times where it wouldn't be in the museum at all. Gresley currently functions as a working example of an A4 without having to steam a record breaker
@@JimmiCottam Oh, don't get me wrong, again, I understand why they don't do it. Money, staff, or just sheer fragility or pricelessness of the locos in particular, but I wish never the less.
Well that was awesome I'm glad you guys collaborated I have a suggestion for you though there's a guy in New Zealand that's trying to make a modern steam locomotive that burns wood so it's carbon neutral it's a water tube boiler design more of a heat exchanger really check out Maxwell locomotive works on UA-cam very interesting maybe you can raise awareness of his existence his boiler design made me revamp my boiler design if I ever build it I love your videos train of thought have a great day I hope you feel better soon sorry you're sick

I happen to live about 20 minutes from the NRM so I get to see Eisenhower whenever I like
my great grandfather drove the mallard but after it was famous for the speed record it was in the 1950's and i think it was just within the train yards shunting but i'm not sure my dad doesn't know for sure and his dad has dementia

Oh I wished I had the money to go to Britain and visit the A4 reunion but maybe when they reached 100 years old maybe..... Maybe not.

I agree as they have put it into storage, the state the Dominion was in when it arrived in the uk she was in very poor state, and could tell that she wasn't cared for out in Canada
Of course they like theirs! The state it was in when it arrived in the UK was more because it wasn't that well cared for in the UK before it was first sent over.
Agreed, it's definitely one of the highlights of the museum and very much loved here in Canada, especially nowadays after the restoration in 2012, according to some footnotes in the documentation when BR donated DoC, the restoration only meant that the museum would receive a complete locomotive and that BR would re-fit the missing chimney and cleaned from scrap condition and that the Canadian Railway museum requested that BR at least repaint it to make the look presentable. Even after the new coat of paint, it arrived in Canada only in slightly better than scrap condition. and as a side note, DoC is not stored and still on public display, it just moved to the section with with the rest of the museum's European and Japanese built locos
@@dashstig6556 yeah, it's disappointing that they took it out of the Angus Pavilion, but it is in with several other pieces of equipment that look none the worse for wear, and at least it's not outside!
@@jayo1212 I agree when she was withdrawn from service she didn't receive the bestvtreatment to be honest, so I've got to agree she wasn't in the best state when she first went too Canada, but least she's back to her forma glory and hopefully many happy years ahead

The Steam Engine Is Amazing I Like It
There's one slight mistake in your commendatory. Insomuch as there were 35 not 34 locos in the class. The last entered service in 1958, with the first withdrawal [of the first Sir Ralph Wedgewood]in around 1941-2 after the "bedecker Raid [so named after the pre war tourist guides when York was bombed. The raid included a few bombs dropping on the York North MPD, now the National Railway Museum.
