Thank you so much for adopting a kitty with FIV, since a lot of people don’t give them a chance. Just so you know, the gauze is a great idea, but it’s not a substitute for dental cleanings, which should be done at least every other year (February is dental month, so that’s usually the best time to do it since a lot vets give discounts). Some cats tend to get resorptive lesions, which start under the gum line and there’s nothing you can do to prevent them, since it’s a genetic thing. They’re very painful and can only be seen by X-ray in the early stages, so it’s important to still keep on top of that. They also sell dental treats for kitties and water additives to help dissolve plaque and tartar. There’s also some great supplements for kitties with FIV to give them the best shot at staying healthy. I think it’s precious how much you care! I’m actually a cat behavior consultant and have done a lot of rescue and it makes me so happy to see people they treat their animals like family, because they are! ❤

A soft or hard food helps with the smell. Or you can spray a little water in the hard food. They have the greenies for cats too just like they do for dogs to help with breath and teeth.

I was taught all of this when a stray cat found me. I also recommend the Pretty kitty litter. It's pretty expensive though. Other than that I used this Pine litter that was really absorbent. Also, Cats like Big littler boxes not tiny ones. I also used heavy duty liners. That helped with the smell. Also Cats don't like their whiskers touching the bowels when they eat or drink, so make sure you have big bowls for that. And don't be surprised if your cat wants to drink from the faucet.
